In 2025, 71-year-old Hungarian (匈牙利) writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai won the Nobel Prize in Literature. He got this great honor for his “powerful and creative works that show the strength of art even in hard times full of disaster and fear.” His life has been an amazing journey closely tied to literature and a love for different cultures.
Krasznahorkai was born in 1954 in Gyula, Hungary. His early life was full of different experiences — he played jazz piano as a teenager and later studied law at college. But literature soon became his real passion. When he was 13, he read the famous book Moby-Dick. He felt a strong connection with Captain Ahab, the main character. This moment played a big part in shaping his imagination for writing.
A special trip in 1991 changed his focus to Chinese culture. At that time, he worked as a journalist and visited China. He was deeply surprised by how rich and colorful Chinese culture was, calling it “the world’s last living museum of human culture.” This trip started a long-lasting fascination; he began using chopsticks at home, listened to Peking Opera often, and became very interested in Li Bai, his favorite Chinese poet. In 1998, he made his dream come true — he traveled across China to follow the places Li Bai once visited.
Though his works, such as Satantango, are known for their complex and long sentences, they have won praise from readers around the world. Susan Sontag, a famous writer, once compared him to Gogol, another great writer, and said he was a “master of modern Hungarian writing about serious and dark times”.
4. According to the passage, what inspired Laszlo Krasznahorkai to be a writer?
A. Winning the Nobel Prize. B. Working as a journalist.
C. Reading Moby-Dick at 13. D. Studying literature at university.
5. What does the underlined word “fascination” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. A strong interest. B. A challenging task.
C. A sudden outcome. D. A confusing problem.
6. What is Laszlo Krasznahorkai like according to the passage?
A. Simple and traditional. B. Creative and passionate.
C. Humorous and light-hearted. D. Practical and cautious.
7. What can we infer from the passage?
A. His works are difficult due to complex sentences.
B. He lost all interest in Western culture after his China trip.
C. He became a writer right after finishing university.
D. His creative works are highly recognized internationally.
C
Body Language: The Unspoken Dialogue is a fascinating book, exploring the silent language we all speak — the gestures, postures and expressions represented in over two hundred artworks from galleries worldwide. This work is designed to make human behavior comprehensible to everyday readers through artistic depictions of body language across cultures. In these artistic representations of non-verbal communication, we recognize universal human experiences that cross cultural and historical boundaries.
In this “visual guide to body language”, artworks are carefully selected and arranged to highlight connections across different periods and societies. We observe scenes of people interacting in various social situations — from formal handshakes in business settings to intimate embraces between loved ones. Individuals are portrayed in numerous positions — leaning forward in interest, crossing arms in defense, or nodding in agreement. Though these artworks might have been created centuries apart, they capture moments of human interaction that remain familiar to us all.
Body language in artworks often serves to reveal the inner world of the subjects — their confidence, anxiety, or social status. Before the scientific study of non-verbal communication, artists intuitively (凭直觉地) understood and captured these subtle signals in their works. In contemporary art, as our understanding of body language has deepened, artists have become more intentional in using gestures and postures as primary elements in their creations — making body language itself the subject matter of their works.
Some might assume that in our digital age of video calls and virtual meetings, the study of physical body language has become less relevant. From a modern perspective, while technology has changed how we communicate, non-verbal communication remains as significant as any emoji or digital reaction. To fully understand human interaction, we must observe the physical dimension: the eye contact, the posture, and the gestures employed during conversation. And compared to our increasingly digital communications where expressions can be hidden, in-person interaction still provides the richest, most immediate understanding of unspoken feelings.
8. How does the author start the passage?
A. By quoting an expert’s opinion. B. By giving examples.
C. By introducing a book. D. By representing research data.
9. What can we learn about the artworks in the text?
A The use of colors in paintings.
B. Face expressions and body gestures.
C. Family life in different countries.
D. How technology changes communication.
10. Why does the author mention digital communication?
A. To prove that body language is still important today.
B. To explain why video calls are better than meeting in person.
C. To show that body language is no longer useful.
D. To complain about how people don’t talk face to face anymore.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The History of Digital Communication.
B. Famous Artists and Their Masterpieces.
C. How to Improve Your Body Language.
D. Understanding People Through Art.

In contrast to the brightly coloured species of birds, most of mammals are browns and grays, but with a small number of exceptions, of which the most famous is the giant panda. We’ve had some initial assumption about why they had their markings, but we need to confirm the reason for its mysterious pattern.
Viewed up close in a zoo, the giant panda is a strikingly notable mix of a white bear with black shoulders and legs, and an extraordinary face with black fur around the eyes and ears. By comparing with other carnivores (食肉动物), we learned that carnivores with white backs are found in snowy environments, and those with dark legs and shoulders are found in shady habitats. This suggested that the fur was an adaptation to be self-protective in different environments.
Nowadays, giant pandas are kept inside in forests in western China, where they live on their own and there are relatively few predators (捕食者). We are to confirm that the sort of self-protection is effective against giant pandas’ former predators from the days when they ranged right across China into Vietnam.
By comparing the amount of light reflected from the giant panda’s fur with natural objects in the background, it’s clear that their black fur patches (斑纹) match dark shades and tree trunks, whereas their white patches match bright leaves and snow. Also, pale brown, or muddy fur matches the color of the ground. This provides a medium color which bridges the gap between the very dark and very light visual elements in the natural habitat. Besides, a second form of self-protection lies in something termed disorderly colors and patterns-in which highly visible patches break up its outline by mixing with patches in the background.
Giant pandas show this form of defensive outline, especially at longer viewing distances of at least 60 meters away. At these distances, the giant panda becomes hardly identifiable as the black fur patches go with the background, dark rocks and tree trunks.
Although giant pandas in zoos are highly notable to us, it is because we see them up close and surrounded by artificial backgrounds. But when in the wild and at a distance, our research shows that they are beautifully protective to avoid detection.
12. How are giant pandas different from most mammals?
A. They have exceptional colors and patterns
B. They are more brightly colored.
C. They are marked with browns and grays.
D. Their dark legs match snowy environments.
13. What is the purpose of paragraph 4?
A. To explain the reason for pandas living in the wild.
B. To compare the differences of pandas’ body parts in color.
C. To confirm pandas’ color connection to the habitat.
D. To conclude the relationship between light and pandas’ colors.
14. What can we infer about giant pandas from the last two paragraphs?
A. They look darker in the artificial background.
B. Their patterns are determined by their backgrounds.
C. The effectiveness of defensive colors is related to distance.
D. They are more beautifully-colored in the wild than in the zoo.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the research on giant pandas’ fur patterns?
A. Favourable. B. Objective.
C. Confused. D. Skeptical.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

At that time he worked as a journalist and visited China.
C 5. A 6. B 7. D

A. The use of colors in paintings.
C 9. B 10. A 11. D

D
In contrast to the brightly coloured species of birds most of mammals are browns and grays, but with a small number of exceptions, of which the most famous is the giant panda.
A. Favourable. B. Objective.
C. Confused. D. Skeptical.
A 13. C 14. C 15. B

根据第一段“In contrast to the brightly coloured species of birds, most of mammals are browns and grays, but with a small number of exceptions, of which the most famous is the giant panda. We’ve had some initial assumption about why they had their markings, but we need to confirm the reason for its mysterious pattern. (与色彩鲜艳的鸟类相比,大多数哺乳动物都是棕色和灰色的,但也有少数例外,其中最著名的是大熊猫。我们对它们为什么有这些标记有一些初步的假设,但我们需要确认其神秘图案的原因。)”可知,与大多数哺乳动物不同,大熊猫有着独特的颜色和图案。故选A。
根据第四段“By comparing the amount of light reflected from the giant panda’s fur with natural objects in the background, it’s clear that their black fur patches (斑纹) match dark shades and tree trunks, whereas their white patches match bright leaves and snow. Also, pale brown, or muddy fur matches the color of the ground. This provides a medium color which bridges the gap between the very dark and very light visual elements in the natural habitat. Besides, a second form of self-protection lies in something termed misorderly colors and patterns-in which highly visible patches break up its outline by mixing with patches in the background.
根据倒数第二段“Giant pandas show this form of defensive outline, especially at longer viewing distances of at least 60 meters away. At these distances, the giant panda becomes hardly identifiable as the black fur patches go with the background, dark rocks and tree trunks. (大熊猫表现出这种形式的防御外形,特别是在至少60米以外的较远距离观看时,在这样的距离上,大熊猫的黑色皮毛与背景、深色岩石和树干相得益彰,几乎无法辨认。)”和最后一段“But when in the wild and at a distance, our research shows that they are beautifully protective to avoid detection. (但当在野外和远处时,我们的研究表明,它们会很好地保护自己,避免被发现。)”可知,在远处观看大熊猫,它们的颜色会起到很好的保护效果,可见大熊猫的这种防御颜色的保护效果与距离有关。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“We’ve had some initial assumption about why they had their markings, but we need to confirm the reason for its mysterious pattern. (我们对它们为什么有这些标记有一些初步的假设,但我们需要确认其神秘图案的原因。)”可知,提到“初始假设需要确认”,第二段“Viewed up close in a zoo, the giant panda is a strikingly notable mix of a white bear with black shoulders and legs, and an extraordinary face with black fur around the eyes and ears. By comparing with other carnivores (食肉动物), we learned that carnivores with white backs are found in snowy environments, and those with dark legs and shoulders are found in shady habitats. This suggested that the fur was an adaptation to be self-protective in different environments.

注意:

Paragraph 2:
Finally came the big moment.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do? Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.
