Cecily Eklund has always loved her baby dolls. When she was six, she needed them more than ever. She had to go through a brain cancer operation, so her baby doll could stay with her during the long imaging appointments. Besides the materials it was made with, the doll was unique in that it had no facial features. “So it can have any emotion,” says Cecily, who was inspired to create these dolls, called “Blessing Babies”, for other sick kids.
She and her mom began making more, donating some to children's hospitals and selling others to fundraisers. Due to the high demand, they invited other doll makers to work alongside them. Soon, doll makers worldwide also began contributing, sending boxes of their handmade dolls to support the cause.
Cecily's charitable career grew. She began selling handmade dolls and inspirational clothing patches(缀饰), in addition to running fundraisers for various charities. So far, Cecily has raised over $200,000.
Cecily's generosity caught the attention of Evander Kane, the Oilers' power forward, who met her in the press box at a game in December 2022. They've had a special friendship ever since. “Cecily is battling brain cancer, and if you met her, you wouldn't know,” Kane said in an interview with Sportsnet last autumn. “She's just such an amazing human being because while she's going through all these things, she does so much and uses up so much of her own time to give back.”
Today Cecily calls herself a brain cancer survivor and “childhood cancer awareness warrior(勇士)” but she is still followed closely by her team at the children's hospital. While West Africa's Benin approaches its rainy season, occasional showers and sticky hot weather have done little to lessen the enthusiasm(热情) of local villagers who gathered to watch the first Benin Village Super League. Soccer teams from two villages in Parakou, a central city in Benin, competed on a soccer field near the base of the Chinese support mission for cotton production in Benin, in Belle Cite Village.
For the past decade, the China-assisted cotton technology project has been active in Parakou, a major cotton-producing region in Benin. The long-term technical assistance has built strong relationships with villagers. When the project team learned that the former soccer field had been expropriated(征用), they decided to build a new one using agricultural machinery and recycled materials.
Last summer, videos of some soccer matches in Rongjiang County, Southwest China's Guizhou Province, went popular and attracted worldwide tourists. Inspired by this, the Village Super League in Parakou includes cultural performances during halftime, featuring Chinese martial arts and Beninese dance. “Locals love soccer and I wanted to bring this model here and set up a similar league,” said Shou Xiaoyong, head of the Chinese technical team.
Named the Friendship Football Field, the new facility was opened in March last year. It quickly became the preferred place for soccer among villagers in Belle Cite and nearby areas, hosting regular matches, especially during agricultural downtime.
As the tournament progressed, its popularity rose. Villagers from surrounding areas traveled on motorcycles with their children to watch the matches. Yves Koba, the head of Belle Cite Village, praised the Village Super League for promoting communication and friendship among villages. “The league has made us more united. I hope it continues and that our villagers achieve even better results next year.”
