I lived in a small one-bedroom apartment as a writer. Boxes of books 16 me. Over the years, my collection 17 and filled every space. 18 by Stephen King’s advice to cut unnecessary content, I wondered if I could 19 this to my books.
At New Year, I tried giving books as 20 , but most people thought it was more about promoting myself than offering a thoughtful present. Homemade jam seemed to be more 21 .
One day, while walking home from my local community centre, I saw a 22 house by the sidewalk. It looked like a birdhouse but was filled with 23 . It was a Little Free Library. The sign read, “Take a book. Return a book.” It was a sweet little home for books, 24 stocked by the community. I thought, “Why don’t I 25 ?” At home, I selected a few books and walked back the next day. To my 26 , I found a novel by an author I’d wanted to read for years. I took the book and left one. As the months went by, Little Free Libraries showed up like flowers across the city. I carried books to 27 wherever I went. My collection of short story books got smaller, and I felt 28 knowing others read them. Books are meant to be read, not stored away. I felt a new sense of community and belonging.
Last summer, I 29 the owner of that first Little Free Library. She was on her porch, reading. I thanked her for creating such a wonderful 30 . We chatted about favorite books. To my 31 , she thanked me - not for contributing books, but for borrowing them. She was 32 that neighbors used it.
People who live in big cities, especially those in huge apartment buildings like me, often don’t feel a 33 sense of community. We think that’s only for small towns. But after donating books to Little Free Libraries, I felt 34 of something bigger. These little libraries helped me find the sense of community and 35 that I had been missing.

My brother, sister and cousins were my first group. 17 we got more and more fights at home, we never 18 that outside our house, if you messed with one of us, you got 19 of us.
From school to sports, I was 20 in a class project, club, team or group. From speech and debate to field hockey, when I was in a community, I felt 21 to try for things that seemed 22 . I grew because others pushed me. 23 didn’t seem so scary because we were taking risks together.
When a drunk driver killed my father, it was our community that 24 . It was our family friends, our community theater and our sports teams that stood 25 us. My father had been a high school history teacher, and his colleagues—now my teachers—began to keep a 26 eye on us because he 27 could.

As I sit here tonight with my team of five, I’m 33 of how much I love these moments – building 34 we believe in, that we’ll learn from and that we’ll do together.

Passage 4
(2024-2025 学年高三上・八校适应性考试・期末)
To Be Lucky, Be Prepared
I remember the exact moment I learned the principle of preparing for luck.
I was on the wrestling team. Now, if there’s one thing I can tell you about any sports, it is that wrestling is probably the sport that has the least 16 . There are only two people out on the mat, so you cannot blame it 17 your teammates or your coach. And guess what? There is no 18 because we do the whole thing indoors, so you can’t say, “It was raining.” or “It was snowing.” It makes 19 to say wresting is the sport with the least luck.
On our team were two world champions: one of them had been world champion five times. We 20 had five people who were national champions. One of them was a guy 21 the name of John. John had never been 22 in my high school wrestling competition that I could remember, 23 he was a national champion. There was nobody locally who could touch him.
One day, we 24 a match with our biggest opponent (对手). John went out on the mat, and about a minute and 30 seconds into the match he tried to make a particular 25 . He rolled over, and his opponent 26 him halfway through his roll. He was pinned 27 ! The match was over.
I remember on the bus on the way home, one of our teammates tried to 28 John by saying, “Oh, he just got lucky.” And John said, “That’s so stupid. The opportunity presented itself, 29 he grasped it.”
We used to have this big sign in our wrestling room that the coach had 30 there: “Luck is what happens when opportunity 31 preparation.”
John’s opponent was prepared to exploit this opportunity. The probability of 32 John was not strong, and he knew it. But he paid attention to the 33 opportunity to present itself, and he defeated and pinned a five-time national champion.
In other words, the real 34 is Be Prepared. It’s not just finding the opportunity; you have to be prepared to 35 it.

Passage 3
(2024-2025 学年高三上・红桥区・期末)
I learned something really early from my family: Even the biggest challenges are less 16 when you solve them as a community.
I don’t 28 a parent’s death as the way to learn about the 29 of small communities, but it did make me 30 that. If I looked for bigger challenges with the support of a group, I was going to 31 broader goals and build deeper relationships 32 the journey.
As I sit here tonight with my team of five, I’m 33 of how much I love these moments – building 34 we believe in, that we’ll learn from and that we’ll do together.
If you are going to do something that terrifies you, first find a 35 .
