Have you ever run out of coffee or tea? Found no eggs in the fridge? No bread for the sandwich and the nearest shop is too far away? Well, all that can change in the future.
If all goes well, the intelligent future kitchen will soon help solve all your problems. In the future, all kitchen units will be connected to the Internet. The intelligent future kitchen will give wise advice on planning your menu for the day. Worried about your weight?-- It will tell you the right diet and what is good for your health. It will even keep in mind your likes and dislikes!
Designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this smart kitchen promises to pay attention to all your needs. The computer’s system will help keep an “eye” on the fridge. If the fridge is empty, the kitchen will automatically call and place an order at the local supermarket. So you don’t have to worry about it at all.
You get home late, and don’t know what to make from the collection of ingredients (原料) in your fridge. A while back you might have ordered a take-out but now, instead of worrying about eating a collection of this and that, you’re excited. You can pull out each vegetable, and pass each one in front of a web camera next to your fridge. A few moments later, a screen on your fridge would display a tasty recipe.
After dinner, you take your plates to a box next to the sink. You don't have to clean them, your machine does. It produces new plates every time you need to eat. Later in the evening, you phone your other half, who is on a business trip half-way around the world. As you drink your cup of hot coffee, it makes your other half’s cup change color on the other side of the world, another special way to keep in touch.
4. The problem mentioned in the first paragraph will be solved ______.
A. by the intelligent kitchen itself
B. by finding a good housekeeper
C. after you call the supermarket
D. after you buy great amounts of food
5. The kitchen of the future may help you ______.

One day, when Albert Einstein was a small boy, his father bought him a composs(指南针). It was a small toy to entertain him. Einstein was very pleased as he looked at the “magic,” thing turning towards north. For him, the compass was not a toy but a new world.
He was a curious child and would often daydream. His father was annoyed with him for the bad reports from his teachers. They told him that the boy was not interested in his studies. He was blamed by his father for being lost in his foolish dreams.
On leaving school, his father wanted him to study electrical engineering. But he disliked becoming an engineer. He entered the Zurich Polytechnic Academy to prepare himself for a teaching position in mathematics and physics. Though he finished his studies, he was unable to get a job.
Finally, he got a job in an office. In his spare time, he filled his notepaper with difficult mathematical formulas (公式). Some of these later led to great scientific discoveries. When they were published, he became a famous scientist. He could not take his daily walk without being surrounded by reporters. He would only smile at them, and went on with his work in his quiet way.
In 1921, Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize. The Queen of Belgium invited him to pay her a visit. He got off the train and walked to the palace. He wasn’t willing to take the car sent to pick him up. When the Queen asked him, he looked at her with a smile and answered, “It was a very pleasant walk.” Einstein disliked wealth. Peace, he said, was what the world needed, and that could not be bought with money.
8. Why did Einstein’s father buy him a compass?
A. To satisfy his curiosity. B. To let him play with it.
C. To develop his interest in science. D. To help him create a dream world.
9. What does the underlined word “annoyed” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Familiar. B. Strict. C. Angry. D. Content.
10. What can we learn about Einstein from Paragraph 4?
A. He cared little for fame. B. He was not good at talking.
C. He was praised by the Queen. D. He didn’t work as an officer for long.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce a new theory. B. To contribute to world peace.
C. To remember a great scientist. D. To share some incidents about Einstein.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D
【解析】

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“He could not take his daily walk without being surrounded by reporters. He would only smile at them, and went on with his work in his quiet way.(他每天散步都被记者团团围住。他只对他们微微一笑,静静地继续他的工作)”可知,爱因斯坦不关心名声。故选A。
【11题详解】

Some of these later led to great scientific discoveries.(最后,他在办公室找到了一份工作。

Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney’s entertainment parks in California, Florida and Japan each year. What makes these places an almost universal attraction? What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks? Well, one reason is the way they’re treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their “guests”, as they prefer to call them, and to see that they enjoy themselves.
All new employees, from vice presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions Ⅰ”. Here, they learn the company’s history, how it is managed, and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how important their part is in making the park a success.
After passing “Traditions Ⅰ”, the employees go on to do more specialized training for their specific (具体的) jobs. No detail (细节) is missed. A simple job like taking tickets requires four eight-hour days of training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple, ordinary job, he replied, “What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take to get back to the campground?...We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy the party.”
Even Disney’s managers get involved in the daily management of the park. Every year, the managers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail, and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week helps them to see the company’s goals more clearly.
All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous. Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or the world. As a long-time business observer once said, “How Disney treats people, communicates with them, rewards them, is in my view the very reason for its fifty years of success...I have watched, very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis successfully. They are what Disney does best.”

13. The main objective of the Disney employees is to .
A. learn all parts of the business B. see that their guests enjoy themselves
C. be able to answer all kinds of questions D. keep their important guests happy

A. Tourists learn the history of Disney in its entertainment parks.

Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school, so he had no friends yet. One day, he wanted to buy something to eat, only to find that he forgot his money at home.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench (板凳) in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant (傲慢的) boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar (乞丐)?” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet (钱包). He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, because he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】示范一
At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. His hands trembled as he held the wallet, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. “Fahad was so cruel to me. He deserves to learn a lesson,” he thought. But then, his conscience pricked him. “What if this were my wallet? How would I feel?” he mused. After a long, hard battle within himself, he took a deep breath and walked towards Fahad. “Fahad, I found your wallet,” he said, his voice a bit shaky but determined.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving back?” Asad looked straight into his eyes and replied, “Because it’s the right thing to do. I believe in honesty, even when it’s tough.” Fahad was stunned. He had never expected this. A wave of shame washed over him. “I’m really sorry for how I treated you,” he said sincerely. From that moment on, Fahad made a conscious effort to change. He started being kind to everyone, and he and Asad became inseparable friends, all thanks to Asad’s unwavering honesty.
示范二
At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. He stared at the wallet, a mix of anger and temptation in his heart. “This could teach him a lesson about being arrogant,” he muttered. But as he thought about it more, he remembered his parents’ teachings about honesty. “I can’t stoop to his level,” he decided. With a resolute look, he walked up to Fahad. “Here’s your wallet,” he said firmly.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving back?” Asad answered, “Honesty is more important than revenge. I know you might not respect me, but I respect myself enough to do the right thing.” Fahad was taken aback. For the first time, he saw the error of his ways. “I was wrong. I’m sorry,” he said sheepishly. From then on, Fahad’s attitude transformed completely. He and Asad became good friends, and Asad’s honesty had not only won him a friend but also a new-found respect in the class.

A. To satisfy his curiosity. B. To let him play with it.
C. To develop his interest in science. D. To help him create a dream world.

11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce a new theory. B. To contribute to world peace.
C. To remember a great scientist. D. To share some incidents about Einstein.

All new employees from vice presidents to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disney University and taking “Traditions Ⅰ”. Here, they learn the company’s history, how it is managed, and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how important their part is in making the park a success.
After passing “Traditions Ⅰ”, the employees go on to do more specialized training for their specific (具体) jobs.

A. begin by receiving on-the-job training B. must learn several jobs

13. The main objective of the Disney employees is to .

____17____ In Mediterranean countries, if you don’t touch someone’s arm when talking to him or if you don’t greet him with kisses or a warm hug, you’ll be considered cold. However, if you backslap (拍背) someone who isn’t a family member or a good friend in Korea, you’ll make him uncomfortable.

In some countries, like China, Japan and some African nations, food is important, so don’t start chatting about your day’s adventures while everyone else is digging into dinner. ____18____ It’s not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtimes are for eating, not talking.
●Removing Your Shoes or Not
Take off your shoes when arriving at the door of a London dinner party and the hostess will find you rude, but fail to remove your shoes before entering a home in Asia, Hawaii, or the Pacific Islands and you’ll be considered disrespectful. So, if you see a row of shoes at the door, start undoing your shoelaces. ____19____.
