If someone said they’d pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for 6 years, could you do it? Could you? An American mom challenged her son to do just that, and he succeeded.
Sivert Klefsaas is the youngest of Lorna Gold-strand Klefsaas’ four children and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. It was influencing their feelings, as well as their friendships. So, Lorna thought, “If I could, I’d be willing to do whatever to keep Sivert off social media as long as I could, whatever that looks like.” And that’s where the idea for this challenge came from.
It all started when Lorna heard about a similar “16 for 16 challenge” on the radio, where a mother called Amanda Green gave her daughter Teresa $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media. So, Lorna decided to create her own “18 for 18 challenge”. Not only did Sivert finally complete this challenge, but he would do it again, too.
“It wasn’t too difficult to live without social media, and I didn’t think about it much during the 6 years,” Sivert said. “As time went on, it was more of a proud thing.”
He had his friends keep him update on the latest information. Sivert added, “I got to avoid all the unnecessary things that were on there. It also meant I had more time to focus on my grades and sports instead.”
Now that he’s done with the challenge, Sivert has joined Instagram (an app), but has no plans to let social media define (定义) him.
“Social media is great. We certainly need to use it,” Sivert said. “But also make sure you spend time in other areas of your life, especially those personal relationships.”
Still, Lorna is proud of her son’s success. “We are certainly not against social media, but it’s the healthy use of it,” Lorna told CNN.
6. Who does the underlined word “she” refer to?
A. Teresa Green. B. Amanda Green. C. Lorna Klefsaas. D. Sivert Klefsaas.
7. How did Sivert get the latest information?
A. By surfing on the Internet. B. Through the radio.
C. By talking with his friends. D. Through social media.
8. What does Sivert think of social media now?
A. Social media is a way to define people.
B. It’s important to use social media healthily.
C. It is too difficult to live without social media.
D. Social media is great and he needs it all the time.
9. Which words can best describe Sivert?
A. Outgoing and friendly. B. Patient and caring.
C. Funny and brave. D. Strong-willed and proud.
10. What can we learn about Lorna from the passage?
A. She is a mother of a 16-year-old teenager.
B. She helped her son successfully stay off the social media.
C. She doesn’t really agree with the “16 for 16 challenge” on the radio.
D. She is not against social media because her son succeeded in using it.
C
The modern world runs on energy. However, in the past human society used very little energy like wind, water and fire could provide. There are many different ways to create energy, but some ways are harmful to the environment.
Fossil fuels (化石燃料) are the most common kind of energy. They include coal, oil, and natural gas. First, people have to dig them from the ground. This can sometimes harm the environment. However, scientists are creating cleaner and better ways to do that these days. So the environment is not harmed as much as before. But when people bur these fossil fuels, they can give off a lot of harmful gases, which is considered to be one of the greatest causes of global warming. This might harm the environment.
Tidal (潮汐) energy is another way to make electricity. It uses the ocean tides to make electricity. But some kinds of tidal energy can kill many fishes and other sea animals. Also, dams can create lakes and lots of clean energy, but they change the way that rivers run. So they can do great harm to the balance of nature around the lakes and along the rivers.
Nuclear energy is a very powerful form of energy. It is cheap and very clean. However, many people are afraid of it because there have been some very serious accidents in the past which caused great harm both to humans and nature. But the technology is much better these days. Many countries are starting to use nuclear energy more.
We live in an age when it is possible to use different kinds of energy. Whatever kind of energy we use, it should be good for people and environment.

A. They are dug from the ground. B. They are considered expensive.
C. They hardly harm the environment. D. They are not widely used in the world.
12. What problem can tidal energy make?
A. It can cause serious accidents. B. It can change the way that rivers run.
C. It can give off a lot of harmful gases. D. It can kill many living things in the river.
13. Why do many countries start to use nuclear energy more?
A. It’s a common kind of energy. B. People are not afraid of it now.
C. It’s cheap, clean and safer than before. D. People can’t live without nuclear energy.
14. What is the structure of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2…)
A. ①//②③④//⑤ B. ①②//③④//⑤ C. ①②③④//⑤ D. ①//②③④⑤
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Serious Accidents in the Past B. Balance of Nature and People
C. Different Ways to Create Energy D. Cleaner and Better Environment
