Then show a video about the cholera to make students be familiar with this kind of disease. Lead-in Play a game with ss. There are two persons: king cholera and John Snow. Seeing so many deaths in London, John Snow wanted to destroy the cholera. But how can he start? Today we will help John Snow to defeat “king cholera”. Arouse students’ interest and make students have a basic understanding of cholera. 将科学家对抗疾病的过程转换成游戏的思路,学生可以在阅读和完成任务的过程中感受到玩家的体验感,并与科学家一起感受到打败疾病的成就感。 Let students have a prediction and read the text quickly to put the stages of scientific research in the correct order. Prediction Task 1: Put the stages of scientific research in the correct order. 1.Find a problem 2.ask a question 3.think of a method 4.collect data 5.analyze the results 6.find the supporting evidence 7.draw a conclusion Now John Snow is more clearly about how to conduct a scientific research. But as a Chinese saying goes, know the enemy and know yourself. Then let’s help John Snow to know more about him and his enemy. Help students get familiar with the 7 stages of scientific research. Students read para. 1 and find the information. Students read para.2 and choose the correct theory. Students read para. 3 and answer the following questions. Scanning Task 1: Read para. 1 and fill the blanks. John Snow: One of the most feared diseases… What cause it? Maybe we should get inspiration from other’s opinions. Task 2: Read para.2 and choose the correct theory. Two theories: Teacher helps ss to translate some important words: infection; subscribe to.. Task 3: John have got some clues from a map. Now read the map and answer following questions: 1.What does “—” mean? How about PH? 2.Which house numbers had more than four deaths in Broad Street? 3.Which house numbers had no deaths in Broad Street? 4.Why some households (20, 21, 8 and 9) had no death? 5.What’s the similarity among the houses in Broad Street that had multiple death? 6. What’s you deduction/assumption? Guide students to study the text, sort out the information and analyze the structure. Work in groups and find the sentences corresponding to the 7 stages of scientific research. Read para. 4 &5 and answer questions. Careful Reading Work in pairs. Read para. 2 &3, find the sentences corresponding to the 7 steps to complete the guidebook. Then, what’s the truth?
