Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighborhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions. Create wildlife-friendly areas in your backyard When trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter for the native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution. Besides, bird or bat houses in your yard or garden can attract and shelter more species. Avoid harming the natural ecosystem in your backyard Some plants from other places can kill or harm the native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife. Have a greener lifestyle By using less water and fewer fuels, you will do good to help protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway if you can, turn off the electric devices when you’re not using them, take showers for a shorter time, and keep the temperature in your room at or below 68 Fahrenheit degrees in winter. Buy products that are friendly to wildlife Don’t buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps, or hunters who are eager to earn money with them. Donate money to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife in your neighborhood thus promoting their work. 1. What’s the purpose of this passage? A. To show the threats wildlife faces. B. To raise awareness of wildlife protection. C. To explain the importance of wildlife conservation. D. To introduce different ways to protect wildlife. 2. What is suggested in the passage to create wildlife-friendly areas? A. Building a bird or bat house. B. Using less water and fewer fuels. C. Donating money to organizations. D. Buying products made from endangered animals. 3. Which of the following actions is NOT recommended for a greener lifestyle? A. Providing food and shelter for wildlife. B. Taking showers for a shorter time. C. Keeping the room temperature low in winter. D. Turning off electric devices when not in use. B A Neste fuel station in Finland is currently the only place in the world where you can have your car refueled by a robot. It’s the pilot site chosen by Autofuel, a Danish startup, to test its futuristic refueling system — a robotic arm that can locate a car’s fuel tank door, select the right type of fuel, and operate the pump (加油泵). “Our technology intends to provide the customers with maximum comfort and safety at gas stations,” Jonas Thor Olsen, CEO of Autofuel, said. “The robotic arm doesn’t need human involvement. It allows them to go to the shop for a coffee or take a short break while the car is refueled.” Autofuel’s solution consists of a robotic arm housed within the fuel pump, and a series of sensors and cameras designed to keep things running smoothly. Cameras detect the vehicle’s registration number, so the system is able to detect what kind of fuel it requires. Another camera directs the car to stop in a certain area so that the arm can easily reach the fuel tank door. The arm itself then starts to move, opening the door, selecting the right fuel and finally refueling the car. The whole thing looks great in promotional videos, but after one of them recently became popular online, people brought up a few concerns. First of all, in order for the entire process to work, one needs to have their vehicle registered with Autofuel. That’s information many people have no inclination to share for something as small as refueling. Also, the speed at which the robotic arm operates worries a lot of people as it appears to move much slower than a human. With robots and Al becoming such a big part of our lives lately, it’s easy to imagine solutions like Autofuel becoming mainstream in the near future. But any new innovation has to be tested and improved over and over again. 4. What is a robotic arm’s promotional advantage concerning car refueling? A It moves faster than a human. B. It doesn’t need car registration. C. It can park cars automatically. D. It requires no human assistance. 5. What does the underlined word “inclination” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Opportunity. B. Permission. C. Willingness. D. Ability. 6. How does the author find the robotic arm? A. It is well accepted. B. It is far from perfect. C. Its structure is strange. D. Its function is meaningless. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. This Robotic Arm Will Refuel Your Car B An Innovation Has Been Improved Greatly C. Some Negative Views on a Refueling Solution D. A More Efficient Assistant at the Gas Station C How do you beat the summer heat? If you’re like most people, you turn the air conditioning on during the hottest time of the day. But what if you could use off-peak (非高峰) electricity to store cold energy for use the next day? This idea has become a reality for a New York City high-rise that's being cooled by ice. Eleven Madison, a skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan, uses cool, frozen ice overnight to cool the building, according to CBS News. Four stories below ground, an ice battery system freezes (结冰) water at night, when electricity usage is low and electricity costs less, and uses that ice to cool the building during the day. “There’s about 500,000 pounds of ice created every night,” said Holly Paeper, president of Trane Technologies, the company that installed (安装) the system. Air conditioning accounts for nearly 20% of energy consumption in homes and businesses globally. However, on extremely hot days, that figure can jump to 70%. Installations like the one at Eleven Madison help reduce that. According to Paeper, the company has installed this technology in about 4,000 sites worldwide. The system in the basement of Eleven Madison uses 100 tanks each about the size of a parking spot. Since freezing water consumes a lot of energy, a more efficient method had to be developed. “We take water and add certain elements to it,” explained Dr. Patrick Shamberger, an associate professor at Texas A & M University. “This allows us to take control of the temperature within a range of about 0 to 20℃.” While ice batteries aren’t used to refrigerate food or power electrical devices, they are being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other forms of renewable energy storage can help the power grid (电网) deal with hot weather and also lower electricity costs. It’s a win-win for everyone. 8. Why does the system in Eleven Madison make ice at night? A. The temperature is lower at night. B. Air conditioning is not needed at night. C. Water freezes more quickly underground. D. Electricity is cheaper during off-peak hours. 9. What is the purpose of adding some elements to water? A. To keep food fresh in the ice. B. To use smaller storage tanks. C. To control how cold the ice gets. D. To make the ice freeze faster. 10. What is the advantage of using ice batteries? A. They can be used for cooling food. B. They may replace renewable energy. C. They are a cost-effective way to save energy. D. They need less space than traditional systems. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The benefits of using off-peak electricity. B. An innovative method of cooling buildings. C. The development of ice battery technology. D. A company's plan to make home-use ice batteries. D Luggage-free travel, boarding queues and self-flying planes will be common for travelers in 20 years' time. You'll even be able to go on a holiday without leaving your sofa. The bold predictions have been made by futurologist and author Ray Hammond, who is based in the UK. According to Hammond’s predictions published in the Future Travel Report by Allianz Insurance, it's likely that tourists will be flying to and from the moon regularly by 2040. What's more, passports could disappear, as airports move more and more into the land of facial pattern recognition systems at check-in gates. Computer systems that can scan your face and check you into your flight will be standard in 20 years, the report notes. When you board your flight, after checking in with your smiling dial, don’t expect to be greeted by the pilot. Hammond bets that planes will be flying themselves in 2040. No pilots and no supervision. It'll play well for the special routes of plane travel-extra-long flights, which have raised concerns about the aircraft staffs tiredness. Are you nervous at the thought of a plane under its own control? You'll be calmer by the time you step aboard Hammond says. Well already be used to self-driving cars. When you do arrive at your destination and check into your hotel, there won’t be a porter carrying your heavy suitcase to your room. By 2040, we'll have the ability to send our clothing measurements to our hotel ahead of our arrival, where they'll have a 3D printer ready to print out our clothing. And when we check out, our clothes will be shipping off for recycling. Virtual reality will be so advanced within 20 years that it'll allow us to experience other countries and destinations without stepping foot outside our door. The report says, “Multi-sensory virtual reality technology will allow armchair travel planners to ‘step into’ virtual hotel rooms, explore museums or walk into restaurants.” However, it won’t kill the real-life tourism industry-instead, it's expected to give it an even bigger improvement. 12. What did Ray Hammond say about traveling by self-flying plane? A. It is boring. B. It is challenging. C. It is relaxing. D. It is frightening. 13. How will the advanced 3D technology affect tourism? A. Make it easier for tourists to book tickets. B. Make clothes easily available to tourists. C. Make recycling more common in tourism. D. Make it possible to travel without passports. 14. What is possible by 2040 according to Ray Hammond? A. Flying to the moon and back regularly. B. Having no need to book trips. C. Enjoying virtual reality only in museums. D. Traveling with anyone as you please. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Predictions on Travel by 2040 B. Possible Changes About Life in 2040 C. Changes of the Means of traveling D. I am one of the volunteers from Shanghai Disneyland and please follow me to keep in mind something about the park and how to behave well. Shanghai Disneyland is made up of six theme parks. It is a wonderful world for children like you. You can join in different kinds of activities such as enjoying wonderful musicals or plays, watching fireworks or buying nice presents in the shopping area.
