Before phones, people didn’t have a standard (标准的) way to start a conversation. They’d say things like “What is wanted?” or “Are you there?” Thomas Edison, the inventor, suggested “hello” in 1877 as a simple and friendly way to answer the phone. People liked it because it was easy to say and made the conversation more welcoming. Soon, “hello” became the standard way to greet someone on the phone. And it became a popular way to say hi in daily life. The word “OK” probably started in the United States during the 19th century. People liked using funny abbreviations (缩写) and spellings back then, and “OK” might have come from “all correct”, a humorous way of saying “all correct”. Another idea is that “OK” came from the Native American Choctaw word “okeh”, meaning “it is so” or “it is done”. No matter where it came from, “OK” is now one of the most popular words in English. We use it to show agreement, or just to tell others that you understand them. The word “nice” has changed a lot over time. It originally came from the Latin word “nescius”, which meant “not knowing”. In the past, if someone called you “nice”, they might have meant you weren’t very smart. But as time passed, the meaning of “nice” completely changed. It started to mean someone who paid attention to details or cared about things being just right. For example, people would say things like “a nice point” to agree with an idea. Later on, “nice” became more about being friendly, pleasant, or kind. 1. Why did the word “hello” become a popular greeting? A. It was a standard way to start a phone conversation. B. Thomas Edison invented it to greet people. C. It was very easy to greet others in daily life. D. People were tired of using other greetings. 2. What do we know according to the text? A. The word “hello” came from the Native American Choctaw. B. The word “OK” is now the most popular word in English. C. In the past, if someone called you “nice”, it meant smart. D. If people say “a nice point” now, it might mean they agree. 3. In which part of the magazine can we read the text? A. Culture Area. B. Sports News. C. Invention World. D. Travel Guide. A 2. D 3. 根据“Soon, ‘hello’ became the standard way to greet someone on the phone. She was born in 1981 and she became a Chinese teacher when she was 20. Now, the 44-year-old woman teaches Chinese, but she is very interested in computer technology. She has introduced coding (编程) to her students as an important information technology skill. Chen’s connection to coding began in November 2018. She became one of the first teachers in Cangyuan to take training courses on coding. The training was challenging for a beginner like Chen. She needed to learn how to tell a machine to perform actions and finished tasks through different orders. She worked very hard because she believed this skill would be helpful for her students. After the training, Chen started a new group in her school to teach the students coding, but some parents opposed her plan. They didn’t understand what coding was and thought Chen was wasting their children’s time to play video games on the computer. So, Chen could only teach students of her own class at first. For teens, coding does not include writing difficult coding languages. Then Chen taught them how to create interesting animations (动画片) and games. After only one term, every student was able to create something through coding. Learning coding also helped them become more creative and improved their problem-solving skills. Soon, coding classes became popular in schools all over Cangyuan. Some students even won prizes in a national competition last year. “I will work harder and hope these children in mountain areas will have a better future by learning information technology,” Chen said. 4. D 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲了乡村教师陈元春将编程引入云南沧源乡村小学课堂,助力山区孩子成长的事。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据文中“Chen Yuanchun was born in 1981…”以及“Chen’s connection to coding began in November 2018.”,2018-1981=37,所以她是37岁开始接触编程的。故选B。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“They didn’t understand what coding was and thought Chen was wasting their children’s time to play video games on the computer.”可知,家长不理解编程,认为陈老师是在浪费孩子时间,所以是“反对”她的计划。“opposed”与“Disagreed with(反对)”意思相近。故选A。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Then Chen taught them how to create interesting animations (动画片) and games.”可知,陈老师教学生如何创作有趣的动画片和游戏。故选C。 【7题详解】 最佳标题题。文章主要讲述了云南沧源乡村小学的陈老师将编程引入乡村课堂,让山区孩子学习信息技术的故事。选项D“Teacher Brings Coding to Rural Children(老师将编程带给乡村孩子)”最能概括文章主旨。故选D。 C ①The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted (烘烤) its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and soon there were more Starbucks stores in Seattle. ②Things began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who owned Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he wanted to know more about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired (雇佣) Schultz as the company’s head of marketing. ③In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special atmosphere (气氛) of the coffee bars caught his eye most. To Schultz, it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work, and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle. ④Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and relaxing, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores and that was only the beginning. In fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day. ⑤Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gets to understand customers in the city. This understanding helps Starbucks open stores in the right places for their customers. 8. What is the right order according to the text? a. Howard Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. b. Howard Schultz met the three owners of Starbucks. c. Howard Schultz got a new idea for Starbucks. d. Howard Schultz wanted to become part of Starbucks. A. badc B. bacd C. acbd D. abdc 9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. The coffee. B. The atmosphere. C. The experience. D. The shop. 10. What helps Starbucks succeed outside the United States? A. Opening as many big stores as possible. B. Only working with some big restaurants. C. Learning about customers in other countries. D. Making the shops more beautiful and expensive. 11. Which is the best structure of the text? A. B. C. D. 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲述了星巴克是如何由一家小公司发展成现在的规模的。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Things began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who owned Starbucks.”可知,Howard Schultz先遇到了星巴克的三个老板,即b;根据“Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did”可知,接着Howard Schultz去了西雅图看看星巴克在做什么,即a;根据“He wanted to become part of the company.”可知,Howard Schultz想成为星巴克的一部分,即d;根据“In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special atmosphere (气氛) of the coffee bars caught his eye most...His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.”可知,Howard Schultz在意大利的经历给了他为西雅图的星巴克带来新想法的灵感,即c。所以正确的顺序是badc。故选A。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据“Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and relaxing, and customers everywhere seemed to like it.”可知,舒尔茨为星巴克咖啡店创造了一种舒适放松的氛围,各地的顾客似乎都喜欢这种氛围,所以it指代的是“这种氛围”。故选B。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据“One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gets to understand customers in the city.” A。 D Have you ever shouted loudly at someone all of a sudden? Do you often get angry over small things? Actually, being angry can seriously affect our bodies. A new study has suggested that the key to lowering feelings of anger is not venting (发泄) but doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation (冥想). The study was published in March by Sophie Kasparvik and Brad Bushman from Ohio State University in the US. They wanted to explore the popular theory (理论) that venting anger is a good way of getting rid of it. Examples of venting anger include shouting or dropping something, so that you release (释放) the feeling and therefore don’t feel it any more. The pair looked at 154 other studies on anger. These included 10,189 people with different kinds of ages and backgrounds. In their study, Kasparvik and Bushman explain anger as “an emotional response (情绪反应) to a real or imagined threat”. They used a theory of emotion that says emotions are partly felt in your body and partly in your mind. The scientists looked at the other studies to see how different activities affected anger. They found that activities such as running or boxing—which are often thought to be good for dealing with anger—weren’t very good at reducing it. In fact, some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry. For example, they make people’s hearts beat faster. However, activities that dropped physical responses in the body did help to lower feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Bushman says activities that increase physical responses may be good for heart health but are “not the best way to lower anger”. The team found jogging was most likely to increase anger. However, some heart-rate increasing activities—like ball games and team sports—could lower anger. They think this shows that fun or playful activities help to make bad feelings less. 12. How did the writer start the topic? A. By listing numbers. B. By asking questions. C. By telling stories. D. By comparing facts. 13. According to the study, which of the following are good ways to deal with anger? ①Doing yoga quietly ②Taking a slow walk ③Shouting loudly ④Doing meditation. A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①③④ 14. Why do running and boxing sometimes make anger worse? A. Because they make people feel tired after exercise. B. Because they make the anger-linked response stronger. C Because they take too much time to do some preparations. D. Because they are often thought to be bad for heart health. 15. What can we learn from the passage? A. Raising physical responses is the best way to lower anger. B. Venting anger is always a good way to deal with fear. C. All heart-rate increasing activities make anger stronger. D. Fun or playful activities can help to cut down bad feelings. 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要探讨了应对愤怒情绪的有效方式,指出降低愤怒感的关键不是发泄,而是进行如瑜伽、冥想等能让人平静的活动。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章开头“Have you ever shouted loudly at someone all of a sudden? Do you often get angry over small things?”可知,作者通过提问的方式引出话题。故选B。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“activities that dropped physical responses in the body did help to lower feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga.”以及第一段“doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation”可知,瑜伽、慢走(属于能减缓心率的平静活动)和冥想都有助于降低愤怒,而大声喊叫属于发泄,并非有效方式。所以①②④正确。故选C。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry.”可知,跑步和拳击等运动会增强与愤怒相关的身体反应,从而使愤怒加剧。故选B。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“some heart-rate increasing activities–like ball games and team sports–could lower anger. They think this shows that fun or playful activities help to make bad feelings less.”可知,有趣或好玩的活动有助于减少不良情绪。故选D。 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下面材料,从所给的五个选项中选择正确的选项 (其中一项是多余选项),将其序号填入第1~4小题,并回答第5小题。 Four habits to make you a happier person Do you know what makes you happy? B Chen Yuanchun is a teacher at a rural (乡村的) primary school in Cangyuan, Yunnan Province. After only one term every student was able to create something through coding. 4. When did Chen Yuanchun begin to connect to coding? A. At the age of 20. B. At the age of 37. C. At the age of 40. D. At the age of 44. 5. What does the underlined word “opposed” in Paragraph 3 mean? Teacher Brings Coding to Rural Children C ①The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. 8. Only working with some big restaurants. C. Learning about customers in other countries. D. Making the shops more beautiful and expensive. 11. Which is the best structure of the text? A. B. C. D. D Have you ever shouted loudly at someone all of a sudden? C. Because they take too much time to do some preparations. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下面材料,从所给的五个选项中选择正确的选项 (其中一项是多余选项),将其序号填入第1~4小题,并回答第5小题。 Four habits to make you a happier person Do you know what makes you happy?
