Flying like a batB2 is a robot made to understand bat flight. The strength of flying made by the bats’ wings comes from a strong piece of skin. Have you ever used Bazaar? No! Well, I think Bazaar is the best website on the Internet. It’s easy to use and it’s fast I buy everything here. There are a lot of cool phones, computers and video games. There are lots of great photos too, so you can see what you’re buying. First, you choose what you want, and then you go to the cheekout (结算) and pay with your credit card(信用卡). It is simple. If there’s a problem, you can contact the workers by phone, email or social media. But I have never had any problems!

记叙文5篇
This year I entered my teens. I told my parents I wanted to play the piano. Thinking the piano accordion (键盘式手风琴) a reasonable instrument, my parents asked me to attend lessons offered at weekends. After several weeks, my teacher told Mum that I had talent and could be a musician. As a result, for Christmas I received a small accordion as a gift.
Then, in 1983, I decided to return to full-time studies. Needing money to go on my education, I placed an advertisement and found a buyer for my accordion. Over the years, I felt sorry when I thought of my father. He once worked so hard to pay for the accordion. I always remembered how much happiness my practising and playing it brought to him.
By 2013, Dad was in a nursing home and could just stay in bed all day and all night. Doctors said I could bring something in to cheer him up. I began to think how I could bring that happiness to him when I visited. So I asked my son, Sam, to find me a small accordion to be taken to play for my dad. Weeks later, I took the bus to Thompson Pawnbrokers where Sam told me to check out the accordions he found.
When I knew that there were only two full-sized accordions, I explained that I wanted something smaller. As soon as the shopkeeper placed another instrument on the counter, I found it was the one I used to have!
Before Dad passed away the following month, I brought the instrument to the nursing home. When I asked, “Do you know what that is, Papa?” Although he had dementia (痴呆), he answered, “Of course, Lenny! It’s your accordion.”
1.The writer sold his accordion because ________.

C.To find his old accordion. D.To see his father’s smile.
3.Which accordion did the writer bring home finally?
A.An accordion that looks like his old one. B.One of the two full-sized accordions.
C.A smaller accordion that he wanted. D.The accordion that he used to have.
4.What happened when the writer showed his father the accordion?
A.His father was too excited to say a word. B.His father showed little attention.
C.His father still remembered it. D.His father asked for it as a gift.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.D 4.C

I am 13 years old and in the eighth grade. One day, when I was walking home from school, I saw some words on a fence of a house. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination (终点).” I had been having a bad day and just reading this made me a little happier.
I saw the quote every day while walking home from school. One day I decided to write one of my favourite quotes on the fence for someone else to see. When I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine. I added another, and we kept at this pattern for quite a while.
A few days later, I was writing another quote on the fence. And the old man, one of my neighbours, who owned the fence, saw me. He came out and I was afraid he would be angry with me for writing on his fence. He was not known to be a very friendly person. He looked at me angrily and then read the quotes on the fence. Without saying a word, he went back inside. I was terrified for a while, but when I went back to the fence. I noticed two words had been added: “Thank you”.
Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He called me over and told me that he was glad to see that young people still had values. We are now good friends. I still don’t know who wrote that very first quote, but I’d like to say thank you to that unknown hero.

Then Edison worked for five years as a telegraph operator, but he continued to spend much of his time in experimenting his first patent (专利) in 1868 for a vote recorder run by electricity.
Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, but he thought of his deafness as a blessing (祝福) in many ways. It kept conversations short, so that he could have more time for work. He always worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes his wife had to remind him to sleep and eat.

One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he threw the ball at his mother’s favourite vase on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together discreetly and put the vase back to its place.
The mother soon noticed what had happened. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It ran around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, because all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea. Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he decided to keep the lie no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one. The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” The son was surprised. But before he could say anything, the mother continued, “This chocolate is a reward for your ability to repair the vase. Well done!” The mother made no mention of her son’s mistake, giving only encouragement and praise for what he did.
After the incident, life at home was the same as before. The only change was that the boy never lied again. Whenever he thought of lying, the chocolates would flash before him at once.

Development in technology now ties us closer than before. We can call our friends from a thousand kilometers away. We can text. We can talk to each other at the push of a button on WeChat or other social media.
There are, of course, advantages to these modern ways of communicating. However, do we ever think about what we are losing? As someone who likes writing and receiving letters, I often feel sad that so few people now give letter writing a fair chance.
While you might call letter writing old-fashioned, I believe we should all write and send letters more often.
To begin with, there’s lots of love in a handwritten letter. This is why texting or calling doesn’t feel as special as letter writing—it is more hurried. These days, we hope to finish everything as quickly as possible. To save time, we often use short sentences.
Handwritten letters, however, deliver much more warmth because we take the time. Writing letters allows us to express to someone how much we care about him or her in a detailed way. So when we receive a letter, we feel we are loved, remembered and missed. Besides, writing a letter can make us feel happy, too. When we sit down and focus on what we are writing, we make ourselves take a break from the stress (压力) of our lives. Moreover, letters can be kept forever. We can always go back and read them again. By keeping a letter, we keep a part of that person and his relationship with us.
Pick up your pen now! Write to your cousins about your school. Let your friends know how much you miss them. Let’s bring back the art of letter writing!

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (Don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other programs on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes”, but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, depending on features. The U. S. is the first target market.
Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace (更换) the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

B.Because he wanted to make sure his children could brush teeth well.
C.Because he wanted to replace the brush on the handle with a new one.
D.Because he wanted to invent an electric toothbrush for the market.
3.What can we know from the passage?
A.Only parents care about children’s teeth health.
B.The Kolibree toothbrush has a fixed price.
C.The toothbrush with a camera is already on the market.

Public toilets around the world have a bad name for being dark, dirty and dangerous. Some public restrooms in Tokyo’s train stations don’t have hand soap inside. A kindergarten in Southern Japan stops taking children to a city park because they are afraid of the flies in the restrooms. People have long called for a change.
Tokyo recently introduced new restrooms in two public parks. For one thing, they are brightly lit and look colorful. For another, they are transparent (透明的), people who need to go to the toilet can check out the cleanness and safety of the restrooms without walking inside or touching anything.
The new restrooms, designed by Shigeru Ban, are made out of “smart glass” that has already been used in different buildings to provide privacy when needed.
When used and locked properly, the colorful glass toilet will become opaque. When the door is unlocked, it will become transparent again.
The toilets are considered as a futuristic example of the country’s technological achievements.
However, people hold different opinions about these new public toilets.
“It will take time to get used to the idea,” said Ming Cheng, whose job is designing buildings. But he would like to give it a try. Sarah Copper white, said that although she always avoided public toilets, she was glad to use the new ones because they looked bright and clean. “I trust science,” she said in a phone interview.
“I don’t want to put my privacy at risk,” Sachiko Ishikawa, a 32-year-old writer and translator, said.
Ms Ishikawa worried that some small mistakes might make restroom users accidentally expose (暴露) themselves. Talia Harris, a writer who has lived in Tokyo for seven years, “I think this will make people feel more uncomfortable, especially for women.” Ms Harris, said.

Have you ever wondered why so many apps are free to use? After all, they cost money to run. Well, instead of paying with money, you’re paying by sharing your personal data (数据). Then businesses buy and use the data so that they can show you targeted ads (定向广告).
What happened to personal information online?
Many free apps get paid by businesses who want to know about the users of the apps. What a business wants is the exact information about customers. Data brokers collect your data—everything from your name, location and education level to the topics you search for, the websites you visit and the people you follow. And then, sell them to businesses.
________?
The data is valuable. Businesses can use the information from data brokers to target their ads. It means they will show their ads to the people who are most likely to be interested in their products or services.
What can we do about it?
Many countries have made laws to protect personal information. For example, a law in the United States says businesses must get parents’ permission (许可) to collect personal data from kids under 13. China’s law on personal information protection came into effect (生效) on November 1st, 2021. At the same time, we should try to protect our data. If an app asks for something like your location, consider saying “No” first. In short, information about you is very valuable. Try to protect it.

A.By sharing their personal data. B.By buying and using the data.

3.推理判断题。根据“It means they will show their ads to the people who are most likely to be interested in their products or services.”可知,此段落主要讲述了企业为什么需要这些数据,选项C“企业为何需要这些数据”符合语境。故选C。
Have you ever wondered how numbers first came about? And why are there 10 of them?
Early humans in the Old Stone Age likely counted animals and other objects by carving tally marks on walls, bones or stone. Tally marks were grouped by 5. Each tally mark stood for 1 and each fifth mark was scored through to help keep track. This system was fine for small numbers, but it didn’t really work with large numbers.
As society developed, people came up with different ways of writing down numbers. Many of these systems, though appearing in different countries, were mainly based on tally marks. They created new symbols for each larger number. But even with these systems, it was still cumbersome to write large numbers.
By the 7th century, Indians had perfected the decimal positional (十进位) system, which could describe any number with only ten unique symbols. A key breakthrough of this system was the number 0. Older systems, which didn’t have 0, would leave a blank in its place, making it hard to distinguish between 63 and 603 or 12 and 120. Having and using 0 helped make writing down numbers clearer and easier for everyone to understand.
But why were the numbers known as “Arabic” since they were born in India? Here’s an interesting story behind it. Sometime in the year 771, Arab businessmen took some Indian scholars to Baghdad to help teach them the new set of numbers. After learning the numbers, the Arabs translated the new numbers into their own script that is Arabic. Sometime later, the Arab traders carried a book of these numerals to Europe, where the numbers were translated into Latin. As the world got these numbers from Arabia, these came to be known as Arabic numerals.
1.What do we know about the early counting systems?
A.They were created in India.
B.They all worked with large numbers.
C.All the systems followed old symbols.
D.Many of them were based on the same system.
2.What does the underlined word “cumbersome” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Hard. B.Useless. C.Convenient. D.Practical.
3.Which number became clearer to understand after Indians perfected the decimal positional system?
A.82. B.8002. C.182. D.821.
4.The new set of numbers is called Arabic numerals because ________.
A.the Arabs invented them B.the Arabs spread them
C.the Arabs lied to the world D.the Arabs kept them to themselves
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.B 4.B
【导语】本文介绍了数字的起源、早期计数系统的局限,以及印度在 7 世纪完善的十进制位值制,还解释了源于印度的数字为何被称为“阿拉伯数字”。
1.细节理解题。根据“As the society developed, people came up with different ways of writing down numbers. Many of these systems, though appearing in different countries, were mainly based on tally marks.”可知,早期的许多计数系统虽然出现在不同国家,但主要都基于计数符号,即许多系统基于相同的体系。故选D。
2.词句猜测题。根据“This system was fine for small numbers, but it didn’t really work with large numbers.”以及“But even with these systems, it was still cumbersome to write large numbers.”可知,早期计数系统不适用于大数,后来的系统即便有改进,书写大数依旧存在困难,所以cumbersome与Hard同义,故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据“Older systems, which didn’t have 0, would leave a blank in its place, making it hard to distinguish between 63 and 603 or 12 and 120. Having and using 0 helped make writing down numbers clearer and easier for everyone to understand.”
根据“Sometime in the year 771, Arab businessmen took some Indian scholars to Baghdad to help teach them the new set of numbers... Sometime later, the Arab traders carried a book of these numerals to Europe... As the world got these numbers from Arabia, these came to be known as Arabic numerals.”可知,这套数字并非阿拉伯人发明,而是他们学习后将其翻译、传播到欧洲,世界从阿拉伯接触到这些数字,故被称为阿拉伯数字。故选B。

Flying like a batB2 is a robot made to understand bat flight. The strength of flying made by the bats’ wings comes from a strong piece of skin. If you want to make a flying robot, said Science Focus, don’t copy bats. But B2 has very thin “skin” made of silicone (硅酮). It flaps its wings and does sharp drops and turns, just like a real bat!
Walking with Cockroaches’ sticky feetIt has four legs instead of six, but this 4.5-centimeter-long cockroach (蟑螂) robot can walk and climb walls just like real cockroaches which have sticky (有粘性的) feet. The robot uses electricity to stick to walls. The tiny robot can look around inside engines because humans can’t go there.
_________
German scientists used magnets (磁铁) to move a 3D-printed guppy (孔雀鱼) around. The magnetic robot rolled around under the fish tank. It copied the speed and direction of a fish partner, who thought the printed guppy was real. The team now use the robotic fish to better understand group actions in guppies.

A group of dancers danced the traditional Chinese Puning Yingge folk (民间的) dance in London on Saturday. They celebrated the Chinese New Year and gave the people there a wonderful cultural show. With painted faces, each dancer held a pair of short sticks. They jumped and swung the sticks while walking and dancing. The 16 dancers came from Chaoshan in Guangdong, China. They traveled to England to give their wishes of good luck in the Year of the Loong to people in the UK.
The Puning Yingge dance is a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. It has a long history. People think it is the dance of warriors (勇士) because it has something to do with the famous book named Water Margin.
“We usually dance the Puning Yingge dance during traditional Chinese festivals and we think it is a symbol of good over evil and bringing happiness,” Chen Laifa said. He is the leader of the team of dancers.
“We would like to bring these meanings to English people and, at the same time, make the dance become more popular in the world,” Chen said.

Recently, the first application (应用) of concrete 3D printing technology in building construction (建筑) in Hubei province, the new countryside housing project in Daye, was officially delivered.
Built by the First Company of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau (中建三局一公司), the Daye countryside housing project is a provincial-level pilot project in Huangshi city, covering an area of 20 hectares. The project’s community design combines countryside houses, countryside parks, high-standard farmland and landscaping to create a picturesque neighborhood.
The project manager, Yuan Hu, explained that 90 percent of each structure is prefabricated, allowing the main structure to be completed in 4 to 5 days. The house walls, inside and outside decorations are made from high-performance green and environmentally friendly materials, which provide enough thermal and sound insulation, waterproofing, and a comfortable living environment year-round.

Happiness is important to everyone. Most people want to be happy but few know how to find happiness. Money and success don’t bring lasting happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness. Some people believe that if they are wealthy, they will be able to buy anything they want, which means happiness. On the other hand, some people believe that holding a high position (地位), you have both money and many other things which can’t be bought by money. However, other people believe that having lots of money is not happiness, or their intelligence, or their health. They think these can make them happy.
Here are a few ways to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Sometimes we spend too much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job (现状). You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, or spending time with close friends. People who have close friends usually enjoy happier and healthier lives.
The second secret of happiness is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to do many meaningful things for other people. If you want to feel happier, go shopping to get food for an old neighbor, or simply help around the house.

Do you know the numbers 0-9 well? They are numbers in Arabic numerals (阿拉伯数字). People use them to mark numbers now. But it’s not the only number system that people use.
About 2, 500 years ago, people in Rome used their hands to count. In Roman numerals, one finger means 1, two fingers mean 2, three fingers mean 3, four fingers means 4. If you want to say five, you can keep your four fingers close on one side and your thumb on the other side. Make both of your hands be five, then you’ll have ten. So in Rome, I, II, III, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X. Also, “L”means fifty, “C” means one hundred, “D” means five hundred and “M” means one thousand. But there is no zero in Rome numerals. Today, few people use them because they are difficult to write and count. But we can still see them on some watches and clocks.
Today, most people use the Arabic numerals. They are easy to remember and write. They help people to count things every day. In fact, Indians first created and used the Arabic numerals.

1.According to the passage, how can people use some apps for free?
A.By sharing their personal data. B.By buying and using the data.
