But it seems that there is a natural limit to the number of people we stay in touch with. A study found that when we make new friends, by starting a new job or going to university, we downgrade or even drop old ones. And while the friends may change, the number stays almost the same. Oxford University researcher Felix Reed-Tsochas asked 24 students in the final months of school to list all their friends and relatives and say how close to them they were. The pupils filled in the questionnaire(问卷) twice more after starting work or going to university. They were also given free mobile phones and agreed that researchers could use their bills to work out who they called, when and for how long. Putting the two pieces of information together showed, unsurprisingly, that most people have a small circle of close friends, who they spend most of their time talking to. This inner circle is surrounded by group after group of ever more distant friends. As the volunteers’ lives changed, this overall pattern, including the number of best friends, remained almost the same, meaning that some close friends from childhood were dropped or downgraded as new friendships were built. Dr Reed-Tsochas said: "Maybe my best friend is no longer the same person but the amount of time I allocate(分配) to my best friend is still the same." He added that this finding suggests that even with the coming of modem technology we are only capable of forming a limited number of true friendships. Chester University researcher Dr Sam Roberts said: "Our results are likely to reflect limitations in the ability of humans to keep emotionally close relationships both because of limited time and because the emotional capital(情绪资本) that individuals can allocate between family members and friends is limited. " 4. What is a popular belief about making friends? A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. We should treat friends as our family B. The more friends we make, the better. D. We've been around for 350 million years! So what's the secret of our success? Sure, we've had plenty of enemies. If you're small and full of protein(蛋白质), everything wants to eat you. So what did we do? We got quick, is what. We learned to hide, is what. We can squeeze so flat that we can fit through a gap no bigger than a coin. Really! I dare you, try it. And we never skip a meal! What do we eat? What have you got? Rotting leaves, garbage, glue paper, leather...and if you like to eat dead things, I tell you, the world is your refrigerator! But just don't offer me a cucumber or plastics! Once humans came along, we went everywhere humans went. In ships, on planes, in camel packs across the desert. Roach road trip! We even followed them to space! That's Uncle Anton. He hid on board the Apollo capsule --he was so mad when they just came right back to earth. You can't have too many roaches, I say. Now there are 4,000 species of us: Asian, American.German...I hope you get to meet them all someday Some of the family get pretty strange. That's Reginald, He thinks if he pretends to be a firefly, birds won't eat him. That's tough old Aunt Flo. She worked for some scientists trying to figure out ways to get rid of us... ha! Poison, radiation, heat, cold... whatever they throw at us, we just get tougher. Bring it on! Aw, look, that's me just after my 15 brothers and sisters and I hatched (孵化) out from our egg case. Yeah, I look pretty much the same. That’s another roach wonder ... we skip the larva stage (幼虫期). Our eggs hatch all ready to roll! Still pretty cute, though. Yep, that's how we got to be the most successful species on the planet! 8. What may contribute to a roach's success? 1 being flexible ② running like wind ③ being full of protein ④ raising many babies A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ 4. ①②④ 9. According to Paragraph5, who is Uncle Anton? A. A hero. B. A spaceman. C. A roach. D. A traveler. 10. What can we learn about roaches from the article? A. They can almost roll when they are brought to the word. B. Their number is coming down thanks to scientists’ efforts. C. Their home is usually equipped with a refrigerator full of foods. D. They are getting along quite well with other species on the planet 11. What is the tone of the passage? A. Pitiful. B. Anxious. C. Serious D. Humorous D True, people remember what you wear. After a social event, we all remember the woman in red, or the man with the top hat. On the red carpet, Hollywood hopefuls take advantage of this reality by wearing outfits designed to be discussed and displayed on the front pages of newspapers. But in terms of making a good impression, being memorable is not just about novelty or fashion, but attraction.both physical and emotional, often in opposite order of importance In a 2020 study, Andre Ndobo found people tended to remember the extremes: both attractive and unattractive faces. He acknowledged that one suggested explanation was that both are characterized by distinctive features that promote facial recognition when compared with faces of average attractiveness. But while distinctiveness is memorable, beauty is skin deep. Accordingly, the way you are remembered by others is often not about what you wear and how you look but about the way you make people feel. Professional interaction can create positive personal memories. Adrie A. Koehler, in a piece entitled “In the Eye of the Beholder” (2017), found that when asked to recall their best learning experience, many students discussed a memorable teacher. What made the teachers memorable? According to the students, memorable qualities included not only teaching styles, but also interpersonal skills and positive qualities such as a sense of humor. We can relate to the results of this study when recalling people who are memorable in our own lives. They are not always people who we believed to be the smartest or most believed, but often those who made us feel the most comfortable, and who were most interested in us. Sincere interest is uniquely attractive. Not only will you remember what someone said, but they will also remember you fondly. Regardless of what we wear or how we look, we are always naturally more appealing and approachable when we focus on others and when we are genuine rather than simply sociable. Remember that, and others will remember you. 12. The Hollywood hopefuls are mentioned to show _____________. A. the competition on the red carpet B. people's attempt to be remembered B. people's wrong belief about impression D. the importance of clothing in one's success 13. Why is an unattractive face remembered according to Andre Ndobo? A. It creates positive memories. B. There's something special with it. C. It makes people feel uncomfortable. D. People often try hard to avoid seeing it. 14. What can we infer from the text? A. Smart people are especially attractive. B. Teaching styles impress students most. C. The best learning experience is hard to`gain. D. Sincere attention is useful in communication. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. You Are What You Wear B.
