Last December, I was looking for a beautiful mountain resort (度假胜地) for my holiday. A friend suggested Zermat. The name alone was enough to interest me at once, so I did some research, bought a ticket, and soon found myself on a plane to Switzerland.
Located in the south of the country, Zermat is known for its mountainous scenery. The town sits at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most famous mountains in the Alps. As my train moved towards Zermat, I couldn’t wait to see with my own eyes the shape of the great Matterhorn.
I come from the busy city of Bangkok, and it was fascinating to find myself in a small town with fewer than 6,000 people. Throughout the year, Zermatt’s population increases very much with tourists. The town, which is famous for its outdoor activities, invites people to come to ski, hike, climb…anything, as long as they don’t bring their car.
Before I got there, I found out that I wouldn’t be able to rent (租) a car. In fact, cars that use traditional oil are not allowed inside the town. That’s because the people of Zermatt are so proud of their view of the great Matterhorn that they don’t want it blocked by air pollution from cars. So visitors like me usually arrive in Zermat by train.
I quite enjoyed being “car-free” and exploring the place on foot. I used one of the town’s electric taxis when I wanted to travel a bit further. I also took an electric bus once. But nothing was more fun than exploring the area in an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage (四轮马车). I was happy to exchange the polluted skies of downtown Bangkok for the clean, clear mountain air. And until I experienced the peace and quiet in Zermatt, I didn’t realise how much traffic noise I hear every day. The town’s electric cars were practically silent.
4. Where is Zermatt located?
A. In France. B. In Switzerland. C. In Italy. D. In Austria.
5. What is Zermatt famous for?
A. Its beaches. B. Its nightlife. C. Its traditional food. D. Its activities in the open air.
6. Which transport can’t be used in Zermatt?
A. Electric taxis. B. Cars running on oil. C. Electric bus. D. Horse-drawn carriage.
7. What did the writer notice about Zermat compared to Bangkok?
A. It is quieter. B. It has more traffic. C. It is more polluted. D. It has less clean air.

Mrs. Thompson was a primary school teacher. As she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told her students that she loved them all the same.
But that was impossible, because Teddy Stoddard sat in the front row. Mrs. Thompson saw the little boy at school the year before. She noticed that he didn’t play well with other children. His clothes were always messy and he needed a bath. Teddy could be unpleasant.

Do you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if your grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So, when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying word lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don’t have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. For example, each time you learn a new word, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (释义). You should write the word, the definition in English, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”, first, write in your vocabulary notebook: generous, then write the definition—giving or willing to give freely. Next, write two examples. Example One, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner, you’re very generous. Example Two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal hospital on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps—writing the word and using it at once—help you remember and use new words.
12. Who is the text mainly written for?
A. English teachers. B. Book lovers.
C. Language learners. D. Worried parents.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The problem. B. The new word. C. The conversation. D. The dictionary.
14. According to the text, which of the following is the correct order of taking vocabulary notes?
a. Make your own example sentence.
b. Write the word and its English definition.
c. Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
d. Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A. b-c-a-d B. d-c-b-a C. a-d-b-c D. c-b-a-d
15. The writer thinks the best examples are those ________.
A. from the dictionary B. from people’s lives

Do you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if your grammar is not completely perfect.
However one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them.
