After immigrating to the United States from the West Indies in 1901, 19-year-old Bob Douglas found a job as a doorman in New York City. One day, a co-worker took him to visit an upstairs basketball court, and he was stunned by the athletic skills on display. Inspired by that moment, Douglas was determined to create a basketball team — the New York Renaissance — which was the first Black-owned, all-Black professional basketball team at that time.
Needing a practice spot for his team, Douglas sought casino (赌场) owner William Roach’s permission to use the dance floor before late-night dancing, offering to cover team costs and bear all financial risk. Besides, the team had to travel the country playing any opponent that would agree to schedule them to go through two financial failures. They repeatedly encountered discrimination and racial violence, such as fistfights with white players and fans. The players were often banned from hotels and restaurants on the road. A basketball historian, Dick Engleberg said. “A lot of times they stayed in jails because that was the safest place they could stay.”
No matter the obstacle, the Rens just kept winning. In 1925, the Rens shocked the world by defeating the Original Celtics, the most dominant all-white team of their day. During the 1932-33 season, the Renaissance won 88 straight games, a professional basketball record that remains unbroken.
The Rens began to decline as its players got older and the tens of thousands of miles of traveling took its toll, but in time, they were recognized for the important role they played in advancing black athletes in basketball. Douglas, who had owned and coached the Rens for their entire 25-year run, has been today known as the “Father of Black Professional Basketball,” which ensures that although the Rens isn’t a household name, their legacy will never be forgotten.
24. What motivates Douglas to establish the team?
A. The financial support he received.
B. The impressive athletic skills he saw.
C. His concern with the jobs for Black people.
D. His desire to become a famous basketball coach.
25. What can we know from Engleberg’s words?
A. The team chose jails to save money.
B. Jails can provide basketball training facilities.
C. The players were arrested for fighting with fans.
D. The team could only find accommodation in jails.
26. What does the underlined phrase mean in the last paragraph?
A. Gained more fans. B. Caused great losses.
C. Discouraged the players. D. Boosted team performance.
27. What can best describe Douglas?
A. Careful and humble. B. Strict and disciplined.
C. Tolerant and dynamic. D. Determined and responsible.

The arm bones of women who lived 7,000 years ago show a surprising level of strength — even higher than today’s professional athletes. That’s according to a first-ever study comparing prehistoric bones to those of living people. The finding suggests a revision of history — the everyday lives of prehistoric women were filled with hard labor, rather than just sitting at home doing lighter tasks while the men struggled and fought for life.
Before the study, there are no clear records describing how our ancient ancestors lived. “It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the difficulties we put our bodies through,” said lead author Alison Macintosh. “Physical force and muscle activity both put pressure on the bone. The bone reacts by changing in shape, thickness and other aspects over time.”
“Previous studies only compared female bones to contemporary male bones,” the researchers said, “And that’s a problem, because the response of male bones to stress and change is much bigger than that of women. For instance, as humans moved from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle constantly on the move to a more settled agrarian (农耕的)one, changes can be observed in the structure of the shinbone (胫骨), and these changes were much more evident in men.”
However, a comparison of the bones of prehistoric women to the bones of living female athletes can help us work out a more accurate picture of what those prehistoric women were doing. “By analyzing the bones of living people and comparing them to the ancient bones, we can start to explain the kinds of labor our ancestors were reforming,” Macintosh said. What they found was that women’s leg strength hasn’t changed a great deal, but their arms used to be very powerful. Prehistoric women, the researchers found, had arm strength 11-16 percent stronger than those of modern rowers, and 30 percent stronger than those of non-athletes.
28. What can we know about prehistoric women?
A. They did tough tasks as men. B. They were stronger than men.
C. They had lighter bones than men. D. They spent most time staying at home.
29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly talking about concerning the study?
A. Its methods. B. Its procedures.
C. Its potential impact. D. Its theoretical foundation.
30. What problem did previous studies on prehistoric bones have?
A. Insufficient sample comparison. B. Mistakes in sample analysis.
C. Too much emphasis on shinbones. D. Improper methods of sampling.
31. Why are modern rowers mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To show their marvellous arm strength.
B. To stress labor intensity of prehistorical women.
C. To compare their strength with prehistorical women’s.
D. To illustrate their advantages over non-athletes in strength.
D
Bathing in the sun has been considered a health hazard for at least four decades. It mainly comes from ultraviolet (UV) light, which the Sun emits alongside visible radiation. The risks UV poses are real, but a new research suggests it may be time to consider the benefits. According to a study published recently in Health and Place, increased UV exposure appears to make people significantly less likely to die of cardiovascular (心血管) disease as well as cancer.
To conduct their analysis, the researchers from the University of Edinburgh used data from over 360,000 people in the UK Biobank, a database. They identified two groups more likely to have high UV exposure: those who claimed to use sunbeds or sunlamps; and those living in sunnier locations. To check that their assumptions about the subjects’ UV exposure were correct, the scientists also looked at vitamin D levels in a subset of blood samples. As vitamin D is synthesised in the skin in the presence of certain forms of UV radiation, it is a reliable indicator of solar exposure.
Their analysis showed that sunbed-users were 23% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease, and 14% less likely to die of cancer, than non-users. Similar trends held depending on where people lived. Sunbed-users, in other words, lived an average of 48 days longer than non-users over the 15 years during which they were studied.
The exact mechanism whereby UV light might lengthen lives is unknown. The authors believe part of the explanation may lie in vitamin D’s competence in boosting the immune system and improving bone health. They also point to nitric oxide (NO,一氧化氮), a powerful blood-vessel widener capable of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. A prior research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that NO is released in skin cells that have moderate exposure to some UV radiation, and sunlight helps move it into the circulatory systems. But for now, experts agree the study is not a licence to stop wearing sun cream.
32. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By defining a concept.
C. By providing a long-held opinion. D. By making comparison.
33. What is employed to measure UV exposure?
A. The locations of living. B. The length of sunbathing.
C. The frequency of sunbathing. D. The level of vitamin D in blood.
34. Which mechanism is a possible way UV exposure lengthens life?
A. Reducing bone density. B. Moving the circulatory system.
C. Restricting the immune system. D. Releasing NO to widen blood vessels.
35. Which of the following is the best title for this article?
A. Sunbathing: Risking Our Skin. B. UV Exposure: Benefits or Not?
C. Sun Cream: A cure for UV Exposure. D. Vitamin D: A Way to Lengthen Lifespan?

67. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
December 25 was unusually quiet except for the nurses complaining about holiday shifts (轮值). I was a triage (分类) nurse that day and had just been out to the waiting room to clean up. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I came back to the nurses’ station for hot drinks. Just then an admitting clerk came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I complained, “Five, how did I get five; I was just out there and no one was there.”
“Well, there are five signed in. “So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my triage desk, a pale woman and four small children in somewhat rumpled clothing.
“Are you all sick?” I asked suspiciously.
“Yes,” she said weakly, and lowered her head.
“Okay,” I replied, unconvinced, “who’s first?” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual basic questions. When it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little vague.
Two of the children had headaches but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient, so I admitted them in and explained the wait because ambulances had brought in several more critical patients. The mother responded, “Take your time; it’s warm here.” She turned and guided her children into the waiting room.
An instinct sent me to the chart — no address: the family, a mother with her four children aged 4-10, was homeless. They came for warmth, not medicine.
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Back to the nurses’ station, I mentioned the family in the waiting room.

Class 1, Senior 3
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】例文①
Back to the nurses’ station, I mentioned the family in the waiting room. Complaints turned to compassion. The team went into action, much as we do when there’s a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency. Hot drinks, fruits, candy, and teddy-bear buttons were laid on the table of the waiting room, which was turned into a banquet within minutes, candles flickering beside the plastic Christmas tree. The mother’s eyes filled with tears; the children stared, stunned by the sudden magic. We took turns accompanying them, singing and laughing.
Then it was my turn to join the “party” in the waiting room. I knelt beside the four-year-old girl clutching a stuffed nurse-bear. “I want to be like you,” she whispered. I told her to keep her dream. We colored reindeer, shared chocolate, and laughed when cocoa spilled. When the shelter van finally arrived, the little girl hugged my neck. “Thanks for being our angel,” she breathed. The door closed on waving hands and one last “Merry Christmas” I walked back to the triage desk, heart glowing brighter than the hospital lights — reminded that sometimes the best medicine is simply human kindness.
例文②
Back to the nurses’ station, I mentioned the family in the waiting room. The grumbling stopped instantly. Christmas shifts turned into Christmas mission. Someone grabbed the free cafeteria vouchers; another robbed the gift-closet for teddy bears and crayons. We filled a laundry basket with oranges, sandwiches, and cocoa packets, then wrapped it all in leftover gold ribbon. Within minutes the waiting-room table was a miniature banquet, candles flickering beside the plastic Christmas tree. Warm cider steamed as carols played from a phone. The mother’s eyes filled with tears; the children stared, stunned by the sudden magic.
Then it was my turn to join the “party” in the waiting room. The four-year-old girl hugged me and whispered, “Thanks for being our angels today.” The “party” lasted most of the shift before we located a shelter for them. The departure time was due. They left unseen by doctors but fully treated. That day, as seriously as we met physical needs of the patients that came to us, our team worked to meet the needs, and exceed the expectations, of a family who sought warmth on Christmas Day. None of us will forget that Christmas shift when the waiting room was turned into a glowing party.
