范文:I turned and looked at my husband in disbelief. The grand lighthouse stood inaccessible behind the metal sign. My shoulders sank, the sting of disappointment sharp and cold in the damp air. Seeing my disappointment, he gave me a warm smile and said. “The big attractions are closed, but our adventure isn’t over.” His calm voice reminded me of my father’s advice: we can always choose our attitude. At that moment, I made a choice. I would not let a few locked doors ruin our family vacation. Taking a deep breath, I nodded toward the small path we had noticed earlier.
The path led to a silent beach. Instead of feeling disappointed by the gray weather, we took off our shoes and ran towards the waves. We had a simple walk on the beach. There we also found the colorful sea glass mentioned in the brochure. We spent the next hour like treasure hunters, laughing as we searched for the most beautiful pieces. We couldn’t change that our plans had failed, but we had changed our attitude. That simple choice gave us a more joyful and memorable day than any grand plan could have.

There're lots of articles in which writers like me leave social media and report on how
their lives have transformed.I swore I wouldn't add to it.But here I am,writing about it.And
I'm doing so because it didn't change my life in quite the way that I expected or many of these
essays promised it would.
I genuinely enjoyed Twitter. The problem was that I loved it a little too much.I'd find
myself checking it when I should be working, running late to my daughters'school events
because I tried to fit in a quick glance or staying up far too late surfing vast oceans of
information, tired and barely interested but unable to resist it.
In November,my friends encouraged me to drop my Twitter habit,at least for a little
while.My life was overfull,and this was something I could cut out.I followed,though
hesitantly and with a little bit of unwillingness, because I trust my friends and their wisdom.
I went from being on it nearly every day to being off it for two months now.Being offline
didn't make my life that joyful. But there is one way that leaving Twitter has benefited my life
and my mind. The times when I checked Twitter were often the transition points in my day:
when I waited in line or to pick up my kids from school.Freeing up those seemingly
inconsequential moments has been transformative. These moments are nothing I really
considered before and I even didn't notice their departure when I began going online.Leaving
them unfilled has changed how I walk through time.I may wave to a neighbor;I may feel
gratitude or delight.I may notice that I feel tired or lonely. But this, too,is part of the gifts of
these small moments.
Our days, which are so full of work and thinking,of disappointments and confusion, must
have moments when nothing much is happening, moments when we get no input,no videos,no
opinions.

Some talk of building settlements on the moon or mars to help make sure humanity
survives long into the future.Others have their sights set closer to home:on future cities under
the ocean.
"Technologically speaking,it is absolutely possible to colonize the bottom of the sea,"
says Fabien Cousteau,a well-known ocean explorer who once spent 31 days living in what is
now the world's only functioning undersea habitat,Aquarius. It's about the size of a school bus
and located 62 feet below the ocean surface off the Florida Keys.
Just as astronauts test what it would be like to live in space, aquanauts try out undersea
living with an eye on the future.Escaping from disasters such as climate change, wars,or
pandemics is one reason to live under the sea.Others include studying, exploring,or
appreciating the ocean. It's costly and expensive to constantly keep up an ocean habitat which
must pump in or make its own air, electricity, and fresh water.Inhabitants have to deal with
high pressure. And infections can develop rapidly due to high humidity.
Despite the challenges, several new ocean habitats and cities are under construction.A
series of space station-like undersea living quarters for aquanauts called Proteus are scheduled
to be completed by 2025 off Curacao,an island north of Venezuela in South America. An
undersea colony called Ven Base Alpha will be built near a hydrothermal vent, which would
supply it with energy.Meanwhile,an undersea city called Ocean Spiral in Japan would link its
surface to the deep sea, using the difference in pressure to generate energy and produce fresh
water. This sounds amazing, but it would be extremely expensive and remains just a design.
Not everyone agrees that building homes in the ocean is a good idea. This type of

development could place even more strain on ecosystems that are already struggling with
pollution and climate change. It's important to make sure that any construction is done
carefully, says Susanne Menden-Deuer,an oceanographer at the University of Rhode Island.
Wild undersea habitats should be treated as"the precious, irreplaceable resource that they are,"
she says.

In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People,Dale Carnegie wrote:"I have
come to the conclusion that there is only one way to get the best of an argument-and that is
to avoid it."This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of
arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives-and in many ways misses
the point of arguing in the first place.
Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them.
Like physical fights, verbal fights can leave both sides bloodied.Even when you win,you end
up no better off.You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions
-like,say,tennis tournaments.Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until one winner
comes out from all who entered.Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so
many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position,
formulate an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is
高二英语第6页共12页
any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for
their view and spell out their argument fully.Assess its strength and weakness.Raise objections
and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you
better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument-not in the unhelpful sense of beating your
opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they
disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them.If we readjust our view of
arguments-from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all
gain understanding from each other-then we change the very nature of what it means towin"
an argument.
32.What is the author's attitude toward Carnegie's understanding of argument?
A.Tolerant.
B.Approving.C.Critical.
D.Indifferent.
33.Why do many people try to avoid arguments?
A.They lack debating skills.
B.They may feel upset even though they win.
C.They fear being neglected.
D.They don't have faith in themselves.
34.What does the underlined phrase"spell out"'in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Explain.
B.Defend.
C.Conclude.
D.Fuel
35.What is the key to"winning"an argument according to the author?
A.Strengthening sense of logic.
B.Gathering solid supporting evidence.
C.Seeing things from both sides'perspectives.
D.Practicing proper manners.

Have you ever walked away from a conversation with the sinking feeling that you said too
much? Not because you were impolite or inconsiderate-but because you tried to explain
yourself to someone who didn't really want to understand?36
Over-explaining happens often in our daily life. This behavior originated in early survival
strategies. For those raised in emotionally unpredictable households, clarity may be a form of
self-protection.Anticipating others'reactions,smoothing things over,or presenting a
"bulletproof'reason may prevent punishment or emotional fallout.37People who have
ever undergone trauma (tend to explain a lot to avoid conflict or rejection.
Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same:We spend unnecessary energy trying to
justify our right to take up space,to say no or to make choices others might not like.38
高二英语第7页共12页
Clear language like“T've made my decision..”and“Let's shift the conversation.”can actually
do the trick. These direct statements prioritize emotional honesty without over-disclosure.And
they don't leave space for negotiation where none is guaranteed.
39 You spend less of it in practicing, defending,or recovering, and you needn't
always react to others'discomfort. You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is
based not on performance or submission, but on mutual respect.40 You begin healing the
part of you that believed love had to be earned through explanation. The version of you who
felt unsafe being misunderstood learns a new truth:Your worth was never conditional or
dependent on being agreeable or persuasive.
A.If so,you are not alone.
B.But maybe the biggest shift is internal.
C.Like any behavioral change, this takes practice.
D.But it's not impossible to rid ourselves of the trouble.
E.When you stop over-explaining,you reclaim emotional energy.
F.Have you ever explained to show your politeness and consideration?
G.Over-explaining can also come from the way your brain is wired by past experiences.

For years,my family hadn't had a proper vacation, our lives consumed by busy schedules
This year,I was determined to plan a perfect getaway. My research led me to The Manor,a
grand,historic hotel.As I studied a local tourist brochure,I saw it listed the hotel's main
attractions -an award-winning restaurant and a grand lighthouse.Simple activities like
walking coastal paths and searching for unique sea glass were also mentioned. For this special
vacation,I focused only on what I considered the best experiences.A simple walk on the beach?
We could do that anywhere.I wanted the lighthouse climb and the luxury of a fancy dinner.
Just before we left,my father gave me a hug."Remember,"he said softly,"we can't
control the circumstances, but we can always choose our attitude."I thought of how he always
managed to turn rainy days into opportunities for simple games, finding joy no matter what.I
smiled, but confident in my mind that our trip would be so perfect that we would never need
his wisdom
