12-year-old Suborno Isaac Bari is graduating from Malverne High School, New York. It’s been a “long” journey for him, even though the high school senior skipped (跳过) 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 11th grades - completing his 4th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades while passing the New York State Regents examinations to graduate.
Rebecca Gottesman has been in education for the last 25 years and called Suborno, whom she first met as a then fourth grader, “a genius (天才)”. The school district and the Bari family let Suborno take higher-level classes but still fit in with his peers (同龄人) and develop socially and emotionally.
“We allow him to take high-school-level courses but take them at our middle school. So he would come into our middle school as an eighth-grader and take classes and then after he took his morning classes, he would take a bus to our elementary school where he would join his fifth-grade peers and attend fifth-grade electives (选修课程) and extra-curricular activities,” Gottesman explained.
Even though Suborno moved through grades faster and divided his time between two schools, teachers and fellow students embraced him and gave him space to pursue his interests. He appreciated his Malverne High School experience and said teachers there treated him like any other high school student.
“He’s been constantly seeking to learn,” Gottesman said. The 12-year-old has already got his ambitious sights set on beginning a doctoral program and become a professor. Suborno is heading to New York University on a scholarship to study for a bachelor’s degree in math and physics. “Many people are doing it only because their parents said so or to make the most profit, not because they actually love what they’re doing. So I hope to fix that and help other people understand math and science and love it in all its beauty,” Suborno said.
24.Why does the author call Suborno’s high school graduation a “long” journey?
A.To suggest Suborno is gifted. B.To prove Suborno is hardworking.
C.To stress the courses are challenging. D.To explain education system in New York.
25.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Suborno skipped one grade every year. B.Gottesman knew Suborno in high school.
C.Suborno is the youngest in college. D.Suborno got all-round development.
26.What was Suborno’s experience at Malverne High School?
A.Skipping two grades. B.Studying its curriculum.
C.Getting special attention of the teachers. D.Taking part in extra-curricular activities.
27.What contributes to Suborno’s achievement?
A.Strong self-care ability. B.A wide range of interests.
C.His thirst for knowledge. D.His connection with peers.

Earthquakes are one of the most terrifying natural disasters. They destroy cities and create other disasters such as fires, landslides and tsunamis. Climate change is causing increases in other natural disasters, like wildfires and hurricanes. So could it make earthquakes more common, too?
The biggest and most dangerous type of earthquake is the movements of the plates. Heat coming from deep within the planet causes these plates to move an average of 1.5 centimeters per year, making them rub up against each other. The pressure (压力) in those areas builds until it reaches a breaking point where the plates will move suddenly, releasing energy that causes earthquakes.
Unlike other disasters, it’s difficult to predict when earthquakes will happen, making planned evacuations impossible. Unluckily, climate change could make quakes happen more often. With global warming, glaciers are melting at an increased rate. When melted glacier (融化的冰川) water flows off land and into the sea, the land that used to sit underneath it rises, said John Cassidy, an earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of Canada.
It’s the same principle as when a child pushes a pool noodle (泳池浮棒) below the surface and then let it go: The noodle stays down as long as there’s pressure from above, but as soon as that pressure is released, it rises back up. When this happens, pressure differences can cause earthquakes.
More concerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are those that could be caused by an increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater on the seafloor also goes up. However, Cassidy is uncertain whether sea level rise would make these big quakes happen faster. He stressed that when they do happen, climate change will make them more dangerous. Tsunamis caused by earthquakes will reach farther inland. Warmer oceans will lead to increased rainfall, which will raise the danger of landslides. There’s still a lot they have to know.
“It’s an important topic that we’ll see a lot of information coming out in the coming years,” Cassidy said. “But no matter what we’ve discovered, it’s not good news.”
28.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The danger of the heat. B.Why the plates move.
C.The problem of the pressure. D.How the earthquake happens.
29.What does the underlined word “predict” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Take great control of. B.Focus your attention on.
C.Know things ahead of time. D.Make a big difference.
30.How does the author explain that climate change causes earthquakes?
A.By using what an expert said. B.By comparing it with other things.
C.By giving an interesting example. D.By telling it from pool noodle.
31.What will scientists have to do in the future?
A.They have to face global warming. B.They will prevent sea level rising.
C.They should further study earthquakes. D.They need take action to stop disasters.
D
For better eyesight (视力), doctors advise limiting (限制) the hours of screen time and encourage having enough eye resting time.
However, another study shows that sitting in front of computer or TV screens for long hours is not the only reason for myopia (近视). An Australian research team studied young children in Sydney and Singapore to find the reasons for myopia. The research team found that there were less children who had myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore, even though they spent more time in front of computer and TV screens. The major finding is that children in Sydney spend longer hours on outdoor sports than those in Singapore.
Indoor and outdoor sports both make the eyes pay attention to more distant (远处的) objects, which stops the eyes from changing original shape. But outdoor sports may be better than indoor sports for myopia. Because natural light is good for eye growth and vitamin (维他命) D from the sunlight might be useful to it. Many doctors suggest that every child get its first eye test when he/she is about two and half years old, and even if his/her sight seems good enough. It is necessary for myopic(近视的) children to wear glasses to stop headaches, trouble reading and so on. It is also important that schools invite doctors to test their students’ eyes.
If that is not possible, school teachers should at least encourage parents and children to have regular eye examination and wear glasses. And parents should remember not only to limit the total screen time for their children, but also to encourage them to spend time outdoors.
32.What did the Australian research team study for?
A.To find the reasons for myopia.
B.To find the ways to treat myopia.
C.To learn to choose right glasses.
D.To improve children’s eyesight.
33.Why are there fewer children with myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore?
A.Because the children in Sydney watch TV less.
B.Because the children in Sydney have more eye resting time.
C.Because the children in Sydney use computer less.
D.Because the children in Sydney do more outdoor sports.
34.What conclusion can we draw from the passage?
A.Sydney children don’t study hard.
B.Singapore children do few exercise.
C.Room light does harm to children’s eyes.
D.Outdoors activities do more good to eyes.
35.Which of the following is true?
A.Children should have eye tests as soon as they reach school age.
B.Looking more at distant objects can help the eyes keep their original shape.
C.Doing outdoor sports with no glasses is good for myopic children.
D.Children should limit their time in the sun to protect their eyes.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With each book you read, your mind expands, your vocabulary grows, and your imagination gets a good exercise. But many people find themselves reading fewer books than they want. 36
Keep a book on you.
One of the best ways to make sure you’re reading as much as possible is to have a book on you at most (or all!) times. 37 Maybe it’s while you wait in line to get a coffee. Or while you wait for your bus. Basically, any time you would pull your phone out and scroll, you can pull your book out and read it.
38
How much you should read a day is up to you, but giving yourself a small daily goal will help you keep your reading habit, especially during busier days. I suggest a sweet-spot of 20minutes per day. Sure, if you are able to read more during a day, just go for it.
Don’t be afraid to quit.
It happens to most of us. We pick up a book with the intention of finishing it in no time, but the story is just not for us. The main character may be unlikable. 39 Whatever the reason, we just don’t want to keep reading it. And that’s okay. When you just aren’t into a book, you should 100% quit reading it.
Find a reading community.
40 They allow you a space to dive deeper into what you’re reading about. Finding a reading community is easier than you think. Aside from the countless reading groups on the internet, many local bookstores and libraries host book clubs of their own. It’s really nice to meet people who enjoy the same hobbies as you.
A.Set a daily goal.
B.Read as much as possible.
C.It’s of great importance to choose a good book.
D.Here are a few tips to help you read more books.
E.Or the language may be too difficult to understand.
F.There are many occasions when you have the opportunity to read.
G.Things like book clubs are a great way to encourage you to keep reading.
