National/state/provincial parks/dog parks/botanical gardens/adventure parks/amusement parks/marine parks/baseball parks…… Do you know the parks in Qianjiang ? 1.The Streamside Park ; 2. Step 2.Look and discuss 2. Would you like to go there ?Why ? Yes ,I would like to go there ,because the scenery is very amazing. 3. Should a place like this be developed ? If so ,how? I don’t think so .I think we should protect such places and preserve their natural state. The photo is of the Grand Prismatic Spring(大棱镜温泉) in Yellowstone National Park , in the US. The Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world . The spring is about 100metres in diameter (直径)and around 50 meters deep ,and has a temperature of around 70°C. The spring was given the name because the colors are like that of light being passed through a prism(棱镜).However ,the colors actually have to do with microbes along the edges of the spring .The microbes have different colors depending upon the temperature of the water or ground. The water in the center of the spring is much too hot for any microbiotic life ,so its color is the natural color of the water. There is a wooden walkway which visitors can use to see the spring 。 A national park is not a playground. It’s a sanctuary for nature and for humans who will accept nature on nature’s own terms. —Michael Frome Step 3.How do we understand the quote ? What does “playground” mean ? “Playground” means a place you can play / go for recreation freely. What does “a sanctuary” mean ? “A sanctuary”means a place where something or someone is protected and can find refuge(shelter/cover), and a place that is holy and sacred, and which should not be defiled(玷污;亵渎) “Accept nature on nature’s own terms”means that you do not try to change it or make it adapt to your wishes or needs , but that you adapt yourself to it instead. What does “accept nature on nature’s own terms ” mean ? The quote means a national park is not a place for recreation(entertainment/amusement/relaxation/pastime/escape消遣) ,but is a place where nature is supposed to be protected. Further, the quote imply that the only people who should go to a national park are those looking for a place of refuge , and who will not do anything which harms or changes the park in any way from its natural state. So what does the quote mean? Step 1.Pre-reading 1. Where would you most likely read this passage? 2. What do you think will be talked about in the text? In a travel journal. How has life changed for the Sami? Why might so few Sami want to live in Sarek? They no longer herd reindeer---- they live modern lives in cities . They might not want to live in Sarek because life there is quite hard. 4. Why does the writer think the sweat and hard work is worth it ?
