In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else. Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.
“I am going to telephone seniors,” said my mother. “Every night? But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said, “What’s important is that I listen.”
I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath.” I said.
My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening, she settled on the sofa and dialed. When she finished the call, I said, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert? ” My mother grasped one of my hands and said in a proud tune, “I’m the only person she talked to today.”
It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is near eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.

B. The author realized the value of her mother’s efforts.
C The author’s mother preferred to live alone.
D The author’s mother remained connected to the world.
7. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Seniors’ comfort B. Mother’s evenings
C. Aging: my concern D. Nightly calls, lifeline calls

One of the most traditional British holidays is the “seaside holiday”. Typically, families get on a train or into a car and travel to British seaside towns. They sunbathe on the beach, buy ice creams, eat fish and chips, build sandcastles and so on.
In the early 1970s, air travel became affordable for the average family in the UK, and more and more British people started travelling abroad for their summer holidays. After all, the British weather isn't very good, even in summer, so a lot leave the UK for a vacation. Particularly popular with families on a budget is the “package holiday", where the cost of flights and accommodation are offered at a discounted price by travel agents.
In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became more wealthy, or at least had more disposable income. As a result, young people started to go abroad in groups, to places such as Spain and Greece. Once at their destination, they socialized with other groups of young people and had one long party.
British holidaying habits have begun to change, however. Climate change means that the UK now has a warmer climate than before, so people don't always feel they need to go overseas to find good weather. Also, the world seems a less certain place as interconnected economics rise and fall, which means that the cost of foreign holidays is less predictable than it used to be. As a result, more and more Britons are choosing to spend their summer holidays in the UK.
In the UK, the domestic (国内的) tourism industry---when people go on holiday in their own country---is healthier than it has been in decades. There is now an increased appreciation among Britons for the diversity of the UK. It is not just the geography and the diversity of climate-based activities on offer. It is also the diversity of the cultures in the UK that is beginning to be of interest to domestic tourists
The UK has always been famous for its international explorers, but now it is starting to discover itself.
8. What mainly caused Britons to travel abroad for holidays in the early 1970s?
A. The lower cost of flights.
B. The bad weather in the UK.
C. The trend of going overseas.
D. The rise of tourism industry.
9. What does the underlined word “disposable” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Easy to handle.
B. Steady in amount.
C. Flexible to change.
D. Available for use.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Steady interconnected economics encourage more Britons to holiday in the UK.
B. Climate change has an impact on the change of British holidaying habits.
C. Package holiday was particularly popular with rich families in the early 1970s.
D. Both domestic and international tourists are interested in the diversity of the UK.
11. What's the author's attitude towards UK's domestic tourism industry?
A. Uncertain.
B. Optimistic.
C. Pessimistic
D. Critical.

根据上文“Teenage years are one of the most exciting yet confusing stages in a person’s life. You are no longer a child, yet not quite an adult.(青少年时期是人一生中最激动人心但又最令人困惑的阶段之一。你已不再是孩子,但也不完全是成年人)”以及后文“One of them is your pastime.(其中之一就是你的消遣)”可知,上文提到了青少年是最令人困惑的阶段之一,且后文提到了消遣,故本句旨在说明这一阶段的特点:一个探索的时期,试图找出自己的喜好。故C选项“你处在一个探索的时期,试图找出自己的喜好”符合语境,故选C。
【13题详解】
根据上文“Some pastimes have no moral implications. For example, shall we play basketball or soccer?(有些消遣是没有道德含义。例如,我们打篮球还是踢足球?)”以及后文“Some examples include attending a party where there will be alcohol and drugs freely given out, lying to your parents or even skipping school to watch a movie with some friends.(一些例子包括参加一个派对,那里会免费提供酒精和毒品,对你的父母撒谎,甚至逃学和一些朋友看电影)”可知,上文提到了不涉及道德判断的消遣,后文的例子则是关于道德判断的,故F选项“然而,还有其他的选择需要根据你的人生价值观来做出”符合语境,故选F。
根据上文“Wanting to feel part of a group may force you to do things against your better judgement. However, it is okay to say no to anything that is illegal, or potentially causes harm or is hurtful to you or others.(想要融入群体可能会迫使你做一些违背自己正确判断的事情。然而,对任何非法的、可能造成伤害或对你或他人造成伤害的事情说“不”是可以的)”以及后文“But you do not let that stop you from standing up to peer pressure and being true to yourself. If your friends are true friends, they will respect your decision and not force you to join them.(但你不会让这阻止你顶住同伴的压力,做真实的自己。如果你的朋友是真正的朋友,他们会尊重你的决定,不会强迫你加入他们)”可知,上文提到想要融入群体可能会迫使你做一些违背自己正确判断的事情,可推测本句旨在说明因为害怕失去朋友,而不敢对朋友说“不”,拒绝对方。故E选项“你可能因为害怕失去朋友或被嘲笑而不敢拒绝”符合语境,故选E。
【15题详解】
根据上文“There are some steps you may take to keep away from negative peer pressure. Firstly, stay away from friends who force you to do things that you know are wrong. Instead, spend more time with friends who share the same value as you.(你可以采取一些措施来远离消极的同辈压力。首先,远离那些强迫你做你明知是错的事情的朋友。相反,花更多的时间和与你有相同价值观的朋友在一起)”以及后文“And if a situation gets out of hand, do not hesitate to approach an adult you trust for help.(如果情况失控,不要犹豫,向你信任的成年人寻求帮助)”可知,上文提到的是第一点措施,故本句是在说明第二点远离消极同辈压力的措施。
根据上文“It may not always be easy to resist peer pressure, but do know that you will feel good about yourself later. And even without you realizing it, you may have been a catalyst in your group to bring about a positive change.(抵制来自同辈的压力可能并不容易,但要知道,你以后会自我感觉良好的。甚至在你没有意识到的情况下,你可能已经成为团队中的催化剂,带来了积极的改变)”可知,上文提到“你可能已经成为团队中的催化剂,带来了积极的改变”,说明你在带领这个团队,让其他人跟随你的积极领导。故G选项“你组里的其他人可能会跟随你的领导,获得勇气去做正确的事情”符合语境,故选G。
