2025-2026学年沪教版九年级英语上册期中重难点专项训练 专题03 阅读理解 (1) Famous writer and cartoonist Tsai Chih-chung may already be 73 this year, but he has no plans to slow down or live a more “normal” life. The artist goes to bed at 5 p.m. and wakes up at 1 a.m. He then works till around 2 p.m. “When you are truly focused, everything is silent, as if you are the only one in the world. Time seems to slow down,” says Tsai, who was in Shanghai last month for the launch of the English book of his works on ancient Chinese philosophy. “I can create a book in no more than five days,” he says. “We cartoonists don’t work like novelists who have to write one word after another. We create in our mind a complete picture in the blink of an eye.” Despite his age, Tsai says that he still works for hours. In fact, his goal now is to complete 500 new books in five years! “I just completed a new series on Buddhism (佛教) and made two animation (动画) films and I plan to start a new series about Eastern wisdom,” he says. Born in 1948 in Taiwan, Tsai has been creating comic books (漫画书) on Chinese classics that have won popularity around the world since 1984. (2) Louis Pasteur (1822–1895), a famous French scientist, made big discoveries in medicine, chemistry and industry. He was the first scientist to believe that life could come only from life. His research showed that tiny germs (细菌) spread diseases, and the spread of the germs could be controlled. With this knowledge, humans were able to save many lives. Pasteur discovered a way to make milk, wine and food safe. The method, known as pasteurization (巴氏杀菌), was named after him. One day, a winemaker had bad-tasting wine and asked Pasteur for help. Pasteur found that the bad-tasting wine had some unusual germs. If he killed these germs, maybe he could keep the wine from turning terrible. After trying different ways to kill the germs, he found heating the wine seemed to work best. Later, Pasteur found out that by heating these foods and freeing them from harmful germs, they could be better kept. The heat kills the germs that spread diseases. Pasteur also helped greatly in medicine. In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph was attacked by a sick dog with rabies (狂犬病). There was no medicine for rabies at that time. Luckily, Pasteur was studying about the germs that cause rabies. He believed that he had a medical method for rabies, but he never gave it to a person before. However, the doctor said the child was dying, so Pasteur gave Joseph daily medical help for ten days. Slowly, the child became better. This opened the way for the development of vaccinations (疫苗). Vaccinations keep humans from contracting certain illnesses and help them stay away from many diseases. During Pasteur’s life, he touched on many problems. A simple description of his achievement doesn’t show how excellent he was. What Pasteur achieved for the scientific world makes him one of the most important scientists of all time. 1.Why is heating needed in the method of pasteurization? I always remembered that day when I was so surprised by all the strange looks everyone was giving me. The question stayed with me for a long time. And I couldn’t believe I would lose the friendship of the person I trusted the most. Five years back, Sally was the new kid in my class. I didn’t know what it was, but something special about her drew me to her. She was the friendliest person in the class. We started as classmates, but after a few months, we were best friends. I was always troubled by my poor childhood, and never had the courage to tell anyone about it. However, I told Sally all my secrets. I couldn’t believe that she would hurt me in such a cruel way. She made the matter bigger than it was, adding her own spin (倾向性描述) and telling everyone about my poor experience at school. It was like someone had stabbed (戳) me in the back. After she gave away my secrets, everyone at school started laughing at me whenever I passed by. Because of the terrible situation, I had to move to another school. Sally called me many times, but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken. I tried hard to forget the scars (伤疤) she left in my heart. I started a new life. After a few years, my life went back to the way it was, with new friends. But one day, I met Anna at the market. She was my classmate from the 3rd grade. “Sally wasn’t the one who brought your secrets to light. Amy. Mary was. Mary was our school’s big mouth who always wanted to stick her nose into other people’s business,” she told me. I was all at sea (不知所措). I wished I could have asked Sally about this. (4) The oldest child syndrome (综合征), sometimes called the firstborn syndrome, is about how being the first child in a family can form a person’s character. Birth order has long been thought of as a main reason that influences (影响) how children grow and change. Being the first child can sometimes be hard. “The oldest child syndrome is when the first child feels they must do well and be a good example for other children in the family,” says Nicholette Leanza, a therapist (治疗专家). According to Brandy Smith, a psychologist, some common behaviors for the first child include: ●Having a strong sense of responsibility ● Feeling they must meet people’s expectations, mainly their parents’ expectations ● Often drawn to leadership-type roles ● Usually described as someone who follows rules and acts nicely ●Being a hard-working person who always tries his best to succeed There are also some advantages of being the oldest child in the family. Studies have shown that firstborn children have an advantage when it comes to learning things around the age of four. Some studies show that firstborn children also have a small advantage when it comes to early reading and writing skills. “Being the oldest child can also influence how a child grows in feelings and their understanding of who they are,” Leanza says. “For example, they might grow up quicker because they have more jobs to do at home or they might act more like parents because they have to look after their younger brothers and sisters.” “These can make it hard for the oldest child to find their identity (身份) outside of their role in their family,” Leanza explains. “It’s important for kids to learn to be themselves. And they shouldn’t just see themselves as part of the family.” 1.What is the “oldest child syndrome” mainly about? A.How firstborn children are different from others. He was very wise and forward-thinking. He worked out several reform (改革) plans for the state, including focusing on arming and giving rewards (奖励) to soldiers who were successful during wars. But at the beginning, these reforms were not easily carried out. Only a few people in the state understood Shang’s talent and the advantages of his plans. Most people had little trust and confidence in him. To solve this problem, Shang came up with an idea. He ordered some soldiers to put a thin wooden pole at the south gate of the Qin state capital. This attracted many people. Then, in front of the crowd, he said loudly, “People of Qin, whoever takes this pole to the north gate will get a reward of 10 gold pieces.” It was a simple task and the reward was big. Some people passed and no one stepped forward. They all thought that Shang was joking. Hearing no answer, Shang stepped forward and said, “I will increase the reward to 50 gold pieces.” The words sounded even more unbelievable. Finally, a man from the crowd came forward to take the pole. He put the pole on his shoulders and walked to the north gate. True to his word, Shang paid the man 50 gold pieces. Soon, the people were saying that Shang was a man of his word. When he began promoting (推行) his reforms, they followed and did not question him. (6) Which part of the world has the most nearsighted students? Just like around you—it’s East Asia. Nine in ten school leavers in major East Asian cities are nearsighted, according to the BBC. Experts say books and video games are not to blame. East Asian students, they say, aren’t getting enough sunlight. People become nearsighted because their eyeballs grow out of shape and light entering their eyes cannot focus correctly. The body can produce a chemical dopamine(多巴胺) to stop eyeball from changing shape. And guess what scientist have just discovered? Sunlight can help our bodies produce more dopamine, reported AFP. According to the study, primary school students in Singapore spend only 30 minutes outdoors every day; in Australia, by contrast, kids spend about three hours a day outside. As a result, fewer children in Australia are nearsighted—only 10 percent, compared with 90 percent in Singapore. “Children in East Asia just go to school, go home and stay inside. They study and they watch television,” Lan Morgan of the Australian National University told AFP. But being a bookworm or a couch potato does not directly harm the eyes, added Morgan. “As long as they get outside, it doesn’t seem to matter how much study they do,” he explained. “There are some kids who study hard and get outside and play hard and they are generally fine. The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don’t get outside. As a result of massive educational pressures and the construction of a child’s day, the amount of time they spend outside in bright light is minimized.” Experts suggest children should stay outside for two to three hours every day. This can include time spent in the playground and walking to and from school. 1.What is the main reason for the large number of nearsighted students in East Asia? A.Too much reading or gaming. B.Being short of sunlight. C.Genetic (基因的) reasons. D.Being short of exercise. 2.How long do experts suggest children stay outside every week? A.Two to three hours. B.Fourteen to twenty one hours. C.Two or three days. D.Over twenty-one hours. 3.In the writer’s opinion, why can’t East Asian students get enough bright light? A.Because they don’t like sports. B.Because their parents don’t allow them to. C.Because they have great pressures from study. D.Because they spend more time watching TV. 4.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A.Dopamine is a chemical that causes eyeballs to grow out of shape. B.Dopamine can stop light entering the eyes from focusing correctly. C.Spending time in the sun can make the loss of dopamine in the body. D.The more dopamine a person has in their body, the better eyesight he or she has. (7) Marco Polo was one of the world’s most famous explorers (探险家). He was born in Venice, Italy in 1254. When he was 17 years old, he went on a trip to Asia that lasted 24 years. Marco Polo’s travel later influenced many people. In 1271, Marco Polo left Venice with his father and uncle and set out for Asia. The purpose of their trip was to meet with Kublai Khan who ruled a large part of Asia. On their way to meet the king at his palace in China, they traveled through much of the Middle East and Central Asia. In 1275, they finally arrived at the palace of Kublai Khan. Kublai Khan liked Marco Polo so much that he wanted Marco Polo to work for him. So, the king sent Marco Polo to different places in China, India and Burma. Marco Polo stayed in China with Kublai Khan for 17 years. He observed and recorded everything in detail during his journeys. Over that time, he collected many jewels and lots of gold. Marco saw paper made by the Chinese. People in China had also discovered how to paint on paper. They had many books and even used paper money! Marco Polo returned to Venice with his father and uncle in 1295. People often went to Marco Polo’s home to hear stories about his travels. He became a great storyteller. He asked the boy what happened. The poor boy told Bao Zheng that he sold fried snacks for a living. Today, he made 100 coins from hard work and was going to buy his sick mother some medicine with the money on his way. As he worked for the whole morning, he felt tired and fell asleep beside a rock. Unfortunately, he found that all his coins in the basket disappeared when he woke up. After hearing this, Bao Zheng thought for a moment and said, “I see. Surely, it was this rock that stole your money. I’ll question it and help you get your money back.” Everyone around them thought this was very strange and watched excitedly. Bao Zheng said to the rock, “Rock, rock, was it you that stole the child’s coins?” The rock didn’t reply, of course. Bao Zheng got mad and shouted angrily, “Rock, rock, tell the truth, or I’ll beat you!” The people around laughed and talked secretly, “How can a rock steal money?” “How can a rock speak?” “Everyone says that Bao Zheng is smart, but he looks like a fool to me!” Bao Zheng heard all these and felt very annoyed, so he shouted at these people, “How dare you say bad things behind me! Now I’m going to ask for coins from each of you!” Bao Zheng ordered his men to bring him a pot of water, and asked these people to throw their coins into it. Suddenly, when one man put his coin into the pot, Bao Zheng ordered his men to catch him. “You are the thief!” Bao Zheng continued to explain calmly, “Look, when this man dropped a coin into the pot, some oil floated on the water. (9) Being compared to great people like Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein is not something that happens to a common person. At the age of just 23, Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski has already achieved many more goals than most of us ever will in our lifetime. When she was only 14 years old, the Chicago girl made her own single-engine airplane by herself. Then at 16, she flew it across Lake Michigan, becoming the youngest person to ever fly her own plane. She recorded this two-year experience and put it on YouTube. Completing her study in Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) in 2010, she entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At first, she had to wait to be accepted into the school but once Professors Allen Haggerty and Earll Murman watched her video, they had no doubt. After just three years at MIT, she has already achieved the highest possible grade point—an average (平均) of 5.0. She is now studying further at Harvard University, with full academic freedom (学术自由). Once again she is only 23 years old. What’s even more amazing is that she is no longer interested in building planes but has turned her attention to physics, namely black holes and how gravity has an effect on space and time—that is why she is being compared to Einstein and Hawking. And she records all of her work on her website Physicsgirl. During an interview earlier this year she said, “Look on the bright side about what you believe you can do. When you’re little, you say a lot of things about what you’ll do or be when you’re older—I think it’s important not to forget those dreams. You must hold on to your dreams and have a strong will. Often, when he had an interesting idea, he would become completely absorbed in his thoughts, forgetting everything else around him. One morning, Newton’s housekeeper prepared his usual breakfast—a boiled egg and a cup of tea—and left it on the dining table before going to market. Newton was working in his study on his important book about light and color when the idea for an experiment suddenly occurred to him. Hurrying to his laboratory (实验室), he completely forgot about his waiting breakfast. Several hours later, the housekeeper returned to find Newton still in his laboratory, but something strange had happened to the breakfast. The scientist had taken the uncooked egg from the kitchen and placed it in the boiling water of his laboratory thermometer (温度计), mistaking it for his breakfast egg! When the housekeeper entered, Newton was watching his pocket watch carefully, timing the egg’s boiling process. “Sir,” she asked gently, “what are you doing with that egg?” Without looking up, Newton replied, “I’m testing the boiling point of water at different pressures. The egg should be perfectly cooked in three minutes.” “But sir,” the housekeeper said, trying to hide her smile, “that’s your laboratory thermometer, not a cooking pot. And you’ve put the egg in the mercury (水银)!” Newton suddenly stopped focusing. He looked at the thermometer, then at his watch, and finally at the housekeeper. A slow smile spread across his face as he realized his mistake. “Well then,” he said cheerfully, “it appears I’ve invented a new way to ruin both breakfast and scientific instruments!” This story shows how Newton could focus so deeply on his work that he would forget about normal daily things. 1.The word “absorbed” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ________. She had to get the house a good wash before the most important festival of the year. So firstly, she cleaned the kitchen, every shelf, every bottle, and then every other corner in the house. The spring cleaning was done every year, but it was especially important this year because Della’s family was going to have guests during the festival. And yet, she felt little of the joy that the festival and family should have brought. Surely it wasn’t that she couldn’t feel happy. In fact, she was looking forward to meeting the guests. But she simply couldn’t shake off how tired she was. Every night for the three whole weeks, she got on her bed with tiredness. She even forgot to buy a new dress for the big day. Soon the day arrived and the guests came and had a great time. While the family members enjoyed themselves, Della started thinking, “Was the house looking good? Was her work showing, at least to someone?” By the end of the week, from the laughter and the enjoyable faces of the guests, Della knew she had done a good job. However, her hard work, which came from her time and energy, hadn’t been mentioned by any of the guests even once. A few days later, her son rushed towards her from the school bus. Della smiled at her little boy. “Mum, see what I got you, a star sticker!” Della stared at the tiny golden sticker in surprise. She knew little stickers of stars were given to students in her kid’s school when they did something well. Della let him stick it on her arm. “But why am I getting a star?” she asked. “You did a good job, Mum. You cleaned the whole house and everyone had a good time! So, I asked my teacher to give you a star,” he said, very seriously. For the first time in weeks. Della gave out a big laugh. She knew her work had finally been appreciated, and with such child-like honesty. Della suddenly felt light and happy from her heart. “Let’s go home and celebrate my sticker by eating some sweets, little one!” she laughed. 1.Which of the following best describes Della?. (12) Though being a parent has always been difficult, the Internet hasn’t made the job any easier. In today’s digital age, parents face the challenge of monitoring their children’s online behavior. A study from the Digital Future Project shows that 70% of parents watch over their kids on social media like Facebook. In contrast, 30% of parents don’t step in kids’ online life because they trust their kids, don’t know how to use media sites or have no time to do so. Such a great difference is due to the fact that parents bring up children in totally different styles across generations. Many parents take action to oversee their teens’ online activities. Nearly six-in-ten parents say they often or sometimes check which websites their teen visits. 46% have a password to their children’s social media accounts. In order to combat unsafe website surfing, some parents even download software such as Spectorsoft, which blocks, records and warns parents by monitoring kids’ Internet use. However, Gwenn Schurgin O’Keffe, a parenting expert, warns against using such tools unless it’s really necessary. “You do things because you love your kids and you want to protect them,” she says, “But kids aren’t these evil creatures. Not trusting the online world should not be your only choice.” Global efforts are underway to make the Internet safe for youngsters. The US government updated COPPA (the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) to better protect children’s private information. Europe has given people the right to erase their surfing history on the Internet. Only with permission, should companies there have the right to access personal data. Although there are these measures, the number of new websites keeps popping up, making it harder for rules and laws to keep up with. Therefore, parents must keep an eye on their children’s media lives, balancing trust with oversight. 1.What does the study from the Digital Future Project find? A.It is hard to control children’s online behavior. B.Parents differ in how they monitor their kids’ Internet use. C.There is a large generation gap between parents and kids. ADHD can make it hard for them to keep their mind on things or control their energy. It can cause problems at school, with friends, or at home. In recent years, more teens in North America have been found to have ADHD.From 2009 to 2017, the number grew from 8% to 9%. ADHD can be caused by genes (基因) or the environment. Studies show that too much screen time can harm attention, memory, and reaction (反应) control. But how do different types of social media affect (影响) the development of ADHD symptoms (症状)? Do ADHD symptoms change over time because of screen time? Scientists studied nearly 4,000 teens’ habits for five years. The teens also took tests on thinking skills like planning and remembering. Scientists found that the more time a teen spent on screens, the more ADHD symptoms they reported in that same year and the next. These symptoms included having trouble paying attention and acting without thinking. High screen time also led to lower test scores. This shows that spending too much time on screens might affect how the brain works with information. Scientists found that social media seemed to have the biggest effect on ADHD symptoms. This is because they can mess with an important brain skill called “stopping behavior”. This skill helps us pause before acting, like when we need to stop ourselves from saying something or wait for our turn. Social media can make it hard to learn this skill. Although more research is needed to know how social media affects teens’ brain growth, there are still things teens can do to help themselves. For example, set limits (限制) on screen time, get enough sleep, try outdoor activities or develop hobbies. By making smart choices, teens can keep their brains healthy and still enjoy media in small amounts. 1.What may happen if a student has ADHD? A.They may have trouble paying attention in class. B.They must take medicine every day to feel better. C.They could feel very tired and sleep during lessons. D.They may often forget to bring their books to school. 2.How can social media affect a teen’s brain? A.By causing headaches. B.By reducing their creativity. C.By making it harder to learn self-control. D.By harming their problem-solving skills. 56.What does the passage suggest about the future of ADHD research? A.It will study how genes help teens with ADHD. B.It may study how to stop ADHD before it starts. C.It will look into how social media affect brain health. D.It may explore ways to replace social media with sports. 4.What can we know from the passage? A.Screen time affects genes related to ADHD. B.Social media is the main cause of ADHD in teens. C.Outdoor activities help improve thinking skills greatly. D.Longer screen time leads to ADHD symptoms over time. (14) Einstein said, “The biggest challenge between people is how they spend their spare time. Control your spare time, and you control your life!” In order to learn about how students spend their spare time after school, No. 12 Junior High School did a survey (调查) among 1,200 students and here is the result. After getting the result, the school teacher and some parents get much more worried about the teenagers’ study, because most students waste their spare time on computer games. Also, there are only about 130 students choosing to kill time by reading. That really shocks the headmaster. He is always thinking about helping the students develop reading habits, so he plans to put “reading” into their daily schedule (日程安排). As for playing sports, about 20% of students prefer to exercise outside rather than stay at home or go to after-school classes. According to the survey, the ones who go to after-school classes actually don’t top the list. Instead, those who enjoy reading and doing sports normally get much better grades. The percentage of helping with the housework reminds the school to call on the parents not to do much for their kids. Being responsible for the family is a great way to shape their character (品质). 1.How many students are there choosing to play computer games in their spare time? A.240 B.336 C.396 D.960 2.What will the headmaster do to help the students develop reading habits? A.He will buy lots of books for students. B.He will ask teachers to read with students. C.He will set up a daily reading class for students. D.He will ask the students to go to the library often. 3.What can we know from the survey? A.Playing sports is the most popular after-school activity. B.Parents think playing computer games is a good way to kill time. C.Being responsible for the family is a good way for the students to study well. D.The students who enjoy reading and playing sports can get much better grades. (15) Just like any relationship, best friendships depend on trust, promise, respect and interests. When any of these elements is missing, the friendship will be hard to go on. If the trust is totally broken, you may not be able to forgive him or her. Sometimes a friendship ends because either you or your friend gets tired of putting the heart into it. This can happen when one of you finds a new friend or even a new hobby that takes up much time. Or, perhaps you find the relationship is always going in an unhealthy way and you want some distance. Other times, you simply change and want to leave each other. Sure, it seems sad at the time, but it’s completely normal. Not all friendships are meant to last forever. So, what should you do if something like this happens to you? Read on for some friendly advice. Whatever the reason you’re breaking up with your best friend, always remember that he or she was once super important to you. Take the time to sit down privately and tell him/her what’s going on and why. Don’t send him or her an unpleasant e-mail or just start ignoring (不理睬) him or her. In fact, maybe he or she has known there’s a problem and would be willing to have a heart-to-heart chat. If you’re not sure about wanting an end forever, you could suggest you two take a break from each other. If, after a while, you realize why you became the best friends in the beginning, you can try getting back to your former behaviors. Whatever you do, be honest about your feelings while having respect for his or hers. And if you both agree the BFF thing is over, make sure not to be enemies. 1.Which is not the basic elements of friendship? A.Promising to do anything. B.Showing respect. C.Believing in friends.
