Lead in the learning topic of this period and introduce the learning objectives. Step 2 Writing guidance Activity 2 Learning about the structure and language features of the two texts Learn about the structure and language features of the two texts by answering the following questions. 1. What is the function of each paragraph in the passages? The Father Of China’s Aerospace (Qian Xuesen) Para 1: Introduction Paras 2-5: His personal history and accomplishments Para 6: His personality Para 7: His death and people’s appreciation of him A World of Pure Thought (Stephen Hawking) Para 1: Introduction Para 2: His claim to fame Para 3: Characteristics that made him great The basic structure of such kind of writing: Part 1 Introduction—General information, name, title, field, main achievement, and so on. Part 2 Main body—Personal history, events, accomplishments and personality. Part 3 Conclusion/Ending—Comments on the person’s achievements, personality or contributions. 2. Underline the linking words and phrases in the passages, and describe their function. However, after the Songhu Battle broke out in 1932, … At that time, China was poor and its rocket science was undeveloped. Nevertheless, Qian did not let that discourage him … Because much of the technology behind the Shenzhou rockets … However, what might have made him such an outstanding … In general, there were two main theories … Besides being brilliant, he was brave, … Furthermore, he was quite determined. Above all, Hawking was willing to admit his faults. The function of linking words: 衔接词语(linking words)是语篇衔接的纽带,表达的逻辑意义包括时间关系、空间关系、列举和顺序、例证、递进、对比和转折、等同和替换、过渡和总结、结果和推论等,其中多数是衔接性状语。 3. Find words that describe the personalities of the scientists. Qian Xuesen: a man with “great scientific thought and scientific spirit” who was patriotic and served his homeland with effort, achievement, and devotion; a pioneer; did not let that discourage him; determined; an outstanding and creative scientist; deep appreciation for art Stephen Hawking: brilliant; brave, sometimes careless in what he said or did; willing to say what others were afraid to say; dream of what others were afraid to dream about; quite determined; willing to admit his faults 4. How do the stories about the scientists help illustrate these personalities? In the case of Qian Xuesen, we see his determination illustrated by his struggles and how he overcame challenges. His story also shows he was patriotic and devoted to his career. In the case of Stephen Hawking, we also see his determination in the face of difficulty through the stories told about him. We also see his audacity (胆大). Activity 3 Writing guidance—Learning to write about what makes a great scientist Learn about how to write an essay about what makes a great scientist. Write about the scientific spirit. 1. In groups, discuss some stories about great scientists such as Tu Youyou, Yuan Longping and Qianxuesen. The other alternatives: The story of Newton and the apple, Watson dreaming of the structure of the DNA, Fleming’s accidental discovery of penicillin, etc. 2. Using these stories as a basis, discuss the following questions: 1) Apart from being clever, what are the most important personal qualities a scientist must have to be successful? Suggested answer: A scientist must be lucky, to an extent, but a part of that luck is noticing what others might gloss over (搪塞). For example, Fleming noticed that something was odd about a sample in a petri dish, and he did not throw it away. The intuitive and creative power of a great scientist also needs to be taken into account, as illustrated by Watson’s dream which showed him the structure of the DNA. 2) How do these stories illustrate the scientific spirit? 3. Now work by yourself to write an essay about the scientific spirit. Task 1: Write an essay to introduce a scientist. Task 2 Write an essay about what makes a great scientist. 1) Structure for introducing a scientist: Part 1 Brief introduction—General information, name, title, field, main achievement, and so on. Part 2 Main body—Personal history, events, accomplishments and personality. Education, research, struggle, experience, achievements, rewards, and so on. (In the order of time) Part 3 Conclusion/Ending—Comments on the person’s achievements, personality or contributions. Or significance of the scientific spirit and inspiration you get from it. Structure for what makes a great scientist: Part 1 Brief introduction—Good qualities of a scientist or major aspects of scientific spirit. Part 2 Main body—Detailed explanation. Good qualities + Story, example, illustration or explanation. Part 3 Conclusion/Ending—Conclude the good qualities of a scientist or major aspects of scientific spirit. The significance of good qualities of a scientist or the scientific spirit and inspiration you get from it. 2) Useful expression and linking words and phrases. Useful expressions linking words and phrases scientific spirits have a vivid imagination have a strong intuition statistical analysis data collection be curiosity and creativity start out as a scientist well-respected man make a decision be interested in be willing to be curious about pay attention be necessary for be extremely knowledgeable an outstanding and creative scientist be familiar with dream of however, at that time, nevertheless, because, in general, besides furthermore, above all, all in all, in conclusion, in a word, in short, in brief, to sum up, to conclude 3) Read the sample writing for reference. Sample writing: What Makes A Great Scientist As far as I am concerned, scientific spirits include some noble qualities, such as devotion, persistence, never giving-up and creativity and so on. It is thanks to the scientific spirits that the great scientists have made many outstanding achievements. For instance, if it had not been for Qian Xuesen’s devoted work on missiles and rockets, China wouldn’t have become such a powerful country/so powerful a country in the world in a short time. It is the same with Yuan Longping developing the hybrid rice, which has decreased the number of the hungry people around the world. Their contributions can’t be ignored. So we should show respect for the great scientists and learn the scientific spirits from them. Besides, as students, if we can apply the scientific spirits to our study,we will certainly achieve what we want. In our daily life, we should also learn the scientific spirits from the great scientists to handle the difficulties and problems we meet with. Activity 4 Writing practice 1. Choose a task and practice writing the first draft by following the writing sample and the text you have learned, using the check list as criteria. Task 1: Write an essay to introduce a scientist. Task 2 Write an essay about what makes a great scientist. 2. (If time permits,) Exchange drafts with a partner. Use the checklist to help you revise the draft. Step 4 Summary and evaluation Activity 5 Summary 1. Summarize the main contents of this period briefly by emphasizing how to write an essay to express your views on chemical farming or organic farming. 2. (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 2. What will you do to improve your writing after class? 3. What good qualities would you like to learn from some great scientists? Homework: 1.
