Imagine if we could turn items that would normally be thrown in the dustbin into warm, waterproof blankets — a young girl from Wales is doing just that!
Twelve-year-old Alyssa Faith has spent the past year collecting abandoned chip bags which she then transforms into foil(箔纸) warming blankets. She donates them, along with toiletries and other essentials, to organizations that support people who are unhoused throughout Wales and as far as Ukraine. So far, she’s turned over 10,000 chip bags into 200+ blankets!
Alyssa got the idea to make these innovative blankets from a Facebook story about Pen Huston of East Sussex, England. Pen started a Crisp Packet Project to make survival bags with foil blankets and gave them to those in need throughout the United Kingdom.
As a budding environmentalist, Alyssa thinks there’s an added bonus to using chip bags. “Crisp packets are really hard to recycle, so this is a new way to stop them going in the bin,” she said.
For each bag, she starts by opening the packet and washing it, which is her least favorite part, then she places four packets on a piece of parchment paper(羊皮纸) and irons them so they stick together. The last step is placing the packets between the clear plastic and ironing them to seal it all together. The result is a foil blanket similar to that used in emergencies. It takes Alyssa about an hour and a half to make each blanket, and her mom says the project keeps her out of trouble!
“She makes the blankets after school — it certainly keeps her away from her phone,” said Alyssa’s mom, Darlene Dean. “She’s passionate about the environment, and the homeless support organizations in North Wales have been very positive about the blankets.”
This young lady is really going places! We love that she’s channeling her skills towards helping others in such a huge, meaningful way. Keep up the great work, Alyssa!
4. What inspired Alyssa to make foil blankets?

A. The challenge of using chip bags.
B. The process of making foil blankets.
C. The efforts Alyssa and her mom made.
D. The materials used in making blankets.
7. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce Crisp Packet Project.
B. To appeal for love and care.
C. To call on people to save energy.
D. To sing the praises of Alyssa’s kindness.
C
The whole world knows them: actors, singers, models, athletes and TV personalities. If I use social media, I get too familiar.
I have nothing against the entertainment industry and celebrities. The problem is that by idolizing the entertainment industry so much, we sometimes completely forget about the things that are truly important and that are changing our world. You probably know who Leonardo DiCaprio is — a very talented American actor and film producer. But then you probably don’t know who Cori Bargmann is. Bargmann is a scientist who is uncovering the causes of Alzheimer’s and autism, which have been unknown for years.
What I think is wrong is that DiCaprio’s net worth is $260 million dollars, while Bargmann’s is less than $ l million dollars. DiCaprio is definitely talented and has worked hard to give us good films, but Bargmann is working for something that can save thousands of humans who are suffering. And just because our society prefers to idolize the entertainment industry instead of science, she gets paid much less than she deserves.
But if it would benefit the world to invest all of our time and attention toward scientists, why don’t we make scientists our new “celebrities”?
First of all, we like being entertained. We love pretty faces and easy-to-digest information. It’s easier to care about simple stuff rather than scientific, complicated things. Another reason is that most scientists don’t like being in the spotlight. They’re mostly reserved and like to have privacy. They’re busy people, which explains why they haven’t attracted the media the same way that performers have. Also, people have free will and the right to be interested in whatever they want to be.
However, studies have shown that young people are more interested in a scientific career as a result of COVID-19. The pandemic has also made known some scientists who have suddenly started appearing on TV and guiding us on how to get protected from this deadly virus. Maybe that is the start of the development of a different point of view which will be in favor of science for future generations.
8. Why does the author mention Leonardo DiCaprio and Cori Bargmann?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To give an example.
C. To offer a definition. D. To propose a solution.
9. Why are scientists less known than actors?
A. Scientists get paid much less than actors.
B. People are busy choosing what they like.
C. Scientists don’t feel like being paid attention to.
D. People prefer entertainment to complex science.
10. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Studies make scientists known and accepted by the masses.
B. Young people want to change their jobs because of the pandemic.
C. People are attracted to science and scientists during a special time.
D. Most scientists gradually become willing to show up in public light.
11. What’s the author’s attitude toward entertainment stars?
A. Objective. B. Favorable. C. Prejudiced. D. Indifferent.
D
We humans often navigate (导航) using road signs and GPS. But what about elephants? Connie Allen, a behavioural ecologist at the University of Exeter in the U.K., said “the elephants navigate over long distances using their unbelievable memories”, which makes others consider that an elephant will never forget. But it’s also been suggested here and there that maybe olfaction is extremely important for these long-distance movements.
Allen and her colleagues checked that idea by testing African elephants’ ability to identify a very special smell: the smell of pee (尿). You see, an elephant pees a lot — some 12 to 15 gallons a day — and that pee can contain a series of chemical signals.
But first, they needed some pee. So they headed for a spot along Botswana’s Boteti River and waited. They waited for elephants to pee and, within 20 minutes, went and collected these fresh pee samples. Then they set up cameras on seven paths which the elephants usually walked along. After observing the elephants’ natural behaviour on the paths, they noticed that the majority of the elephants checked smells along the paths — especially elephants travelling alone, which is an indication, the researchers said, that smells may serve as signposts along the paths.
Next, they placed those pee samples along the paths. And they found that for at least two days, passing elephants trained their trunks on the samples, especially samples from mature adults, which is another indication that smells might be an effective navigational signal. Their findings appeared in the journal Animal Behaviour.
Based on these results, they hope conservationists might be able to use elephant pee as a decoy (诱饵). If we can trick elephants into thinking other elephants are going this way, maybe we can redirect them away from where they are coming into conflict with humans at the moment.
12. What does the underlined word “olfaction” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. The roadside signpost. B. The sense of smell.
C. The long-term memory. D. The sense of direction.
13. How did researchers get their conclusions?
A. By doing field research. B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By making comparisons. D. By doing laboratory experiments.
14. What might be a potential benefit of the findings according to the text?
A. Helping elephants to find other companions.
B. Inspiring new research directions in elephants.
C. Raising public awareness of elephant protection.
D. Making elephants and humans coexist peacefully.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. African Elephants Show Personality-based Movements
B. Elephants Are Born With Excellent Ability to Navigate
C. African Elephants May Use Pee as a Road Sign
D. Elephants Have a Good Memory for Roads

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Housekeeping can be an effective stress reliever in our busy life if we know how to enjoy it. We can benefit a lot from doing housework.
Activities like cleaning the house could give us a sense of belonging to our environment. 16 In the limited space, one can create the best atmosphere that can show the positive energy and care for the members of the house, including ourselves.
Cleaning offers the state of mindfulness, releasing the endorphins(内啡肽), which can improve our mood. Cleaning activities, such as sweeping the floor, provide the same benefits as exercising. We keep the body active and make it a part of the exercise, which is especially good for someone who finds it a struggle to maintain a workout schedule. So we’re supposed to start the day with early morning cleaning. 17
Cleaning provides a sense of control over our environment. Anxiety, the early stage of mental breakdown, could come from insecurity towards uncertainty. 18 Cleaning gives us something to have power over — even if it’s something as small as organising our books by colour. “When we seek out ways to reduce feelings of helplessness, cleaning is one of the best ways to do that,” said Jaime Zuckerman, an American clinical psychologist.
19 Accomplishing a clean-up project could create a “good feeling” of confidence that lasts throughout day. Greater confidence encourages people to face other challenges in life that may have seemed too far a reach in the past. It’s healthy to use cleaning to clear your mind, gain perspective, and take a break from your worries. 20 So we have to make sure it’s enjoyable instead of overtiring.
A. Cleaning is a great way to show love.
B. The post-cleanup feelings can inspire confidence.
C. People enjoy the domestic task of housekeeping.
D. People need something that they have control over.
E. We can’t depend on tidying practice to relieve internal discomfort.
F. However, going overboard with the cleaning activities can cause stress.
G. That can encourage our subconscious to be an active person during the day.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There’s a small, brown brick house, almost hidden by evergreens in front that I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special to me, but rather the person who lives inside. After I parked my car, I knocked on the door and heard a singsong voice inviting me in.
“It’s me, Miss C,” I said as I took off my coat.
“Put your boots under the heater, lovey,” she said as she slowly appeared in the hallway with her walker.
We gave each other a long, tight hug.
I met Miss C about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. My parents reassured me I could start school when I was 4. However, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September.
My classmates and I knew our teacher deeply cared about us. For me, that is the mark of an extraordinary educator — one who instills(灌输) both the love for learning within their students and the excitement of going to school.
Miss C created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment: a painter, a construction worker, a dancer, a writer. One spring morning, we were overjoyed by the arrival of baby chick eggs. We named them and cared for them for a few weeks. After they hatched, we became keen scientists carefully documenting their development through pictures and words in our egg journals. We also made handicrafts with empty yogurt containers, which Miss C collected or we brought from home.
I loved her and I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher just like her. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss C to my classroom. For years, Miss C volunteered in my classroom. I felt fortunate to learn about teaching from her. I looked forward to our conversations as colleagues and friends.
Next month she will move to Cuba and the time to sell her house is near. I came here to pack up things for her.

My Opinion on Labor Education
Currently, labor education has been increasingly attached great importance to, but some students just bury themselves in books, thinking that it is just a waste of time.
Actually, time spent laboring will be rewarding. It can promote students to develop practical skills, strong will, unity and cooperation of good quality. Meanwhile, they are also given the chances to contribute their shares and often rewarded with a spiritual fulfillment.
I have frequently been encouraged to actively engage in some housework at home since my early age. Therefore I have grown more skilful. It turns out that pushing ourselves on labor is very beneficial and essential.
第二节 (满分25分)
【参考范文】
I brought up boxes from her basement and placed them at her feet. Then I sat on the floor and opened each box for her. One by one we went through every painting a student had given her; every thank-you note a parent had written. Before I left, she handed me a bag of “garbage” as she called it, which consists of many of her teaching aids and the empty containers she saved for me. She knows these are treasures only to kindergarten teachers. I happily accepted them and gave her a hug goodbye.
With the bag of “garbage”, I left her house. I got into my car and backed out of her driveway. While driving home, I couldn’t help thinking of my 45-year friendship with my kindergarten teacher. It was under her influence that I became a teacher and it was her friendship that made me a good teacher. Teaching is a profession that is devoted to the development of young individuals. The lucky teachers get to see what their students have done with their lives. The exceptional ones never leave their students’ hearts.
