After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art
25 March — 13 August 2023
Rooms 1 to 8
Explore a period of great change when artists broke with established tradition and laid the foundations for the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The decades between 1880 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 were a complex, energetic period of artistic questioning, searching, risk-taking and innovation.
The exhibition celebrates the achievements of three giants of the period: Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and follows the influences they had on younger generations of French artists and on wider circles of artists across Europe.
With over a hundred works by artists ranging from Picasso to Mondrian and a selection of sculptures by artists including Rodin and Camille Claudel, the exhibition follows the creation of a new, modern art, free of convention, taking in Expressionism and Abstraction. The exhibition includes some of the most famous works of art created during these decades. Important loans come to the exhibition from institutions and private collections worldwide.

A kid moved away from his friends and the familiarity of New Jersey to California, and then immediately solved a local problem with a brilliant invention.
Along with potentially winning himself a career in television advertisement, Arul Mathur, an 11th-grade San Francisco student, has invented a fire-activated extinguisher (灭火器) to protect the property of those he loves.
A single device is capable of protecting fire risk areas in one’s house, while multiple can form a defensive area around one’s entire property against fires. “Over the past three years, there have been almost 7,500,000 acres of wildfire in California alone, destroying nearly 50,000 structures,” describes Mathur, inventor of the Fire-Activated-Canister-Extinguisher, or F.A.C.E.
When a sensor on the device heats up to a certain temperature, a chemical burst within, releasing an eco-friendly fire-retardant (阻燃剂) spray of 5—6 feet in all directions. The retardant can be refilled quite easily, and the only human-controlled aspect is the initial introduction of air pressure into the canister (有盖容器).
Mathur planned to introduce the device via Kickstarter, which saw his goal of $10,000 reached in less than a day, and came with an offer of $99 for F.A.C.E, which will be sold for $120 when production begins.
The only existing market alternative for F.A.C.E is a manual extinguisher, or an automatic sprinkler system, which unless it can be fixed during the construction of the house, will normally cost between $1 to $3 per square foot, amounting to many thousands for a family home. Mathur wrote in his Kickstarter that every penny of profit will go to help fire risk areas.
Indeed 5—6 feet of spray isn’t enough to stop large fires, but if enough devices are placed in strategic areas, neighborhoods or rural communities can work together to prevent brush fires from becoming wildfires, or living room fires from becoming house fires.
4. What can we know about Mathur?
A. He lives with his friends. B. He is engaged in scientific research.
C. He lives in San Francisco now. D. He refuses to help local people.
5. What’s the feature of the device?
A. It’s costly. B. It’s affordable.
C. It’s hard to produce. D. It’s difficult to operate.
6. Which of the following can best describe Mathur?
A. Intelligent and generous. B. Shy and kind.
C. Brave and strong. D. Patient and careful.
7. What does the author want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The safety of the device. B. The significance of the device.
C. The limitations of the device. D. The development of the device.

Definitions of adult learning vary, but it is usually defined as all forms of learning undertaken by adults after having left initial education and training, however far this process may have gone.
Education and training are important factors in achieving the strategy objectives of raising economic growth, competitiveness and social inclusion. However, with some exceptions, the process of implementing education and training remains weak. Most education and training systems are still largely focused on the education and training of young people and limited progress has been made in changing systems to mirror the need for learning throughout the lifespan.
An additional 4 million adults would need to participate in lifelong learning. Recent research confirms the importance of investing in adult learning. The research on adults indicates that those who engage in learning are healthier, with a consequent reduction in healthcare costs.
The big economic challenge in Europe is to raise its growth and employment performance while preserving social cohesion(凝聚力). The rapid progress in other regions of the world shows the importance of creative, advanced and quality education and training as key factors of economic competitiveness. General levels of competence must increase, both to meet the needs of the labour market and to allow citizens to function well in today’s society.
Europe is facing big demographic (人口的) changes that will have a major impact on society and on the economy and consequently on education and training provision and needs. Over the next 30 years, the number of younger Europeans will fall by 15%. One in three Europeans will be over 60 years old, and about one in ten will be over 80.
Given the challenges identified above, raising the overall level of skills of the adult population by offering more and better learning opportunities throughout adult life is important for both efficiency and fairness reasons. Not only does lifelong learning help make adults more efficient workers and more active citizens, it also contributes to their personal well-being.
8. Which can replace the underlined word “implementing” in paragraph 2?
A. Carrying out. B. Taking in.
C. Knowing about. D. Looking over.
9. What can we learn from the research?
A. Adults have reduced healthcare costs.
B. Learning is good for adults’ health.
C. Few adults need to receive learning.
D. More research will focus on learning.
10. What problem does Europe face according to the text?
A. Europeans are not healthy.
B. Many old Europeans have died.
C. The European population is aging.
D. Young Europeans are out of work.
11. What does the author probably agree with?
A. Lifelong learning is essential.
B. Raising adult population is significant.
C. We should help more efficient workers.
D. Work contributes to personal well-being.
D
Some birds are inside decorators, placing big, showy feathers in their nests. But rather than beautifying their homes, these birds may be trying to scare nest-stealing neighbors.
Birds sometimes weave feathers into their nests to provide insulation(隔绝). But behavioral ecologists Karen Wiebe and Tore Slagsvold also saw birds placing large feathers on the surfaces of nests. Those feathers wouldn’t help with warmth. The researchers wondered whether the birds might be using the decorations to send a message.
For birds that nest in holes, competition for nests can be really fierce. Birds scream and fight, sometimes killing an opponent. But these holes can also hide danger. Eagles or other predators(食肉动物)may be hiding inside. If a nest contains feathers or other remains, it might be evidence that a predator has been there. Those holes might not be desirable.
During spring, when nest competition is the fiercest, the researchers set up pairs of nest boxes. One box contained white feathers. The other either contained no feathers or black feathers. Inside the boxes, black feathers were more difficult to see than white ones. Using video cameras, the researchers spied on how tree swallows, blue tits, and pied flycatchers reacted to the boxes. They watched how long birds waited to explore a nest box. When birds took longer to enter, that suggested the birds were scared.
Birds of all three species hesitated to enter boxes with white feathers. But when feathers were in front of a nest, birds jumped right up and grabbed them. That suggested that birds weren’t afraid of the feathers themselves.
“It was really interesting to discover that birds were using a trick to help them keep their nests,” Wiebe says. “When a bird leaves its nest to search for food, it opens the door for a nest stealer. But if it can buy a little time by scaring away intruders (不速之客) with these feathers, then it has a better chance of coming back in time to defend its nest site.”
12. Why do birds cover the surfaces of their nests with big feathers?
A. To keep warm. B. To attract mates.
C. To scare off intruders. D. To hide from predators.
13. What did the researchers find?
A. Feathers alone fail to frighten birds.
B. Holes with black feathers scare birds most.
C. Most birds are hesitant to get into white boxes.
D. Birds like feathers similar to those of their own.
14. What can we infer about birds from Wiebe’s words?
A. They are poor at using tricks. B. They use feathers to play catch.
C. They seek food near their nests. D. They may be aware of nest stealers.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Birds protect their food from predators cleverly
B. Birds attach importance to decorating their nests
C. Birds decorate nests to scare off stealers
D. Birds identify danger by feather colors

With the start of new school, freshmen of Hendersonville High School in Nashville were excited to meet new classmates and teachers. Among them, however, 15-year-old Sergio Peralta was feeling very nervous because his right hand had never fully formed since he was born. Going to a new school and being “different” is always scary. Sergio was particularly concerned with what his classmates would think of him.
Sergio’s parents had trained him to use his left hand from an early age. As he grew up, he was used to not using his right hand. He could write with his left one and do some things with special tricks or techniques. Despite this, in the first days of new school, Sergio always felt like hiding his underdeveloped right hand in his sleeve as if nobody would ever find out if he did so.
It didn’t take long for someone to learn Sergio’s secret. Jeff Wilkins, the teacher of Sergio’s engineering class, figured out that Sergio was missing part of his hand and decided to do something for the new student. Jeff had been leading a robotics project in the school and expert in 3D printing technology. Besides, he hoped to take advantage of this hands-on chance to help his robotics students learn more about engineering and how building a robotic hand worked.
So in his class, Jeff announced with great enthusiasm, “You’re supposed to be engineering, coming up with new ideas and solving issues. Now Sergio needs a new hand, so we’ll work together to build Sergio a robotic hand.” His words fueled everyone’s curiosity and creativity.
For the next four weeks, Jeff and his class including Sergio worked on the project. After some precise measurements and research, the class put forward a design draft. Jeff made a few adjustments and gave them some practical suggestions. With access to online models and a 3D printer, they eventually created a robotic hand, which was intended to look good and work well, like catching something.

第二节 (满分25分)
【参考范文】
Then came the final testing day. The whole class gathered in the science classroom, watching breathlessly as Jeff carefully loaded their self-made robotic hand onto Sergio’s right arm. It fitted quite well! So excited was Sergio that his arm trembled slightly. Having put a baseball on the desk, Jeff signed to Sergio to pick it up. Slowly, Sergio extended his right hand and reached for the ball. Successfully he caught hold of it and everyone present broke into cheers! Holding the ball, Sergio couldn’t contain his tears. Never in his life did he expect to catch something with his right hand!
The life-changing gift for Sergio drew huge attention. Jeff and his students became an instant hit and various media competed to cover the news. When interviewed about the intention of the project, Jeff said, “I intended Sergio’s robotic hand to show our support for him. Meanwhile, I hope to foster students’ scientific spirit through this hands-on operation.” His students stated that Jeff challenged them to transform abstract concepts into reality, from which they benefited greatly. Soon voluntary donations poured in, which would go to the school’s scientific research and help students develop better.
