Riding a horse at a high speed on grassland covered with snow while dressed in a red cloak(披风) and a white fur hat isn’t something people would normally see a Chinese government official do. So it’s not surprising that He Jiaolong, a female official from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, almost instantly became an online celebrity after she posted such a video.
She came up with the idea to make the video when she was thinking about new ways to let more people know about the famous horse breed(品种) of Zhaosu County, Ili, known as “heavenly horses”.
“I never expected the video to be such a hit. At first, I really didn’t like to be called an online celebrity, because I never wanted to be one. But now I’m gradually getting used to using my influence to boost local development, ” she said.
Besides posting short videos, she has also been promoting local agricultural products and tourist resources via livestreaming(直播). With more followers, she can now help to sell local products worth more than 2 million yuan during a livestream while sales were only about 5,000 yuan each time when she first started to livestream on social media.
While she continues to draw the public’s attention to Ili, she also has to keep dealing with the stress brought by criticism, especially often being questioned if being a social media celebrity may affect her work as an official. She said that she had even thought of giving up appearing on social media several times.
“I am, above all, a government official. I will never let what I do on social media affect my job,” she said. “I want to see the locals appreciate my efforts in serving them, which is my duty. I hope people can feel the warmth and positive energy of Xinjiang officials via my videos. I am simply one of them.”
4. Why did He Jiaolong first make her videos?
A. To introduce her job. B. To gain personal fame.

Scientists in Australia have discovered that they can use the world’s smelliest fruits to make devices that could power electric cars. A durian is a fruit that looks like a pineapple. It is a delicacy in some Asian countries, but its smell is so unpleasant that some of those countries have banned it from public places. Its smell has been compared to rotting eggs and even smelly old gym socks.
Vincent Gomes and his colleagues at the University of Sydney, in Australia, used a durian and a jackfruit — another fruit known for its terrible smell — to make energy storing devices called supercapacitors.
Supercapacitors are an alternative to batteries. They can’t store as much energy as a normal battery does, but they are much quicker to recharge. Durians and jackfruits contain some of the chemicals used in supercapacitors, which gave Gomes the idea. To make the fruit-based devices, the team heated and then freeze-dried the uneatable cores of the durian and jackfruit to make a special kind of material called an aerogel.
Aerogels are one of the world’s lightest solid materials. Often called “frozen smoke”, they are made by removing the liquid from a gel and replacing it with air. They have many scientific uses, but one of their special properties is the ability to conduct electric currents, which makes them an important part of supercapacitors. The aerogels made from the durian and jackfruit both worked well when placed inside a supercapacitor, although the durian aerogel was found to be the better of the two.
The discovery is important because the materials currently used to make supercapacitors are expensive. Using natural foods like durians and jackfruits, Gomes says, could reduce environmental pollution, as well as costs.
8. What makes some countries have different attitudes toward the durian?
A. Its smell. B. Its appearance.
C. Its value. D. Its popularity.
9. Which paragraph mentions Gomes’s inspiration of innovation?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2.
C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
10. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Aerogels. B. Scientific uses.
C. Properties. D. Electric currents.
11. What can we learn about fruit-based supercapacitors?
A. They are devices for producing electricity.
B. They are chemicals from durians.
C. They are green and economical.
D. They are light and liquid.
D
Emerging economies struggled to grow through the 2010s and pessimism clouds them now. People wonder how they will pay debts piling up during the pandemic and how they can grow rapidly. The freshest answer to this problem is the fast-spreading digital revolution. The world’s largest emerging market has already demonstrated the enormous effects of digital technology. As China’s old industries have slowed sharply over the past decade, the booming technology industry has kept the economy growing steadily.
Now China’s emerging market peers are getting a push from the same digital engines. Since 2014, more than 10,000 tech firms have been launched in emerging markets — nearly half of them outside China. From Bangladesh to Egypt, it is easy to find entrepreneurs who worked for Facebook or other US giants before coming home to start their own companies.
How can it be that the emerging market countries are adopting common digital technologies faster than the richer countries? One explanation is habit and its absence. In societies filled with stores and services, customers are often comfortable with the providers they have and slow to abandon them. In countries where people have difficulty even finding public facilities, a bank or a hospital, they will jump at the first digital option that comes along. Though only 5% of the Kenyans carry credit cards, more than 70% have access to digital banking.
The digital impact on productivity is visible on the ground. Many governments are moving services online to make them more transparent and less vulnerable to corruption, perhaps the most feared obstacle to doing business in the emerging world. Since 2010, the cost of starting a business has been steady in developed countries while falling sharply in emerging market countries, from 66% to just 27% of the average annual income. Entrepreneurs can now launch businesses affordably, organizing much of what they need on a smartphone.
The era of rapid digitization has only just begun. This offers many developing economies a revolutionary new path to catching up with the living standards of the developed world.
12. Which is a result of digital technology for China?
A. Stabilizing its economy. B. Accumulating its debts.
C. Keeping its old industries booming. D. Letting its new industries slow sharply.
13. Why does the author mention Kenyans in Paragraph 3?
A. To present emerging markets’ digital technologies.
B. To show rich nations abandon what they own unwillingly.
C. To present emerging markets accept digital options warmly.
D. To show poor nations have difficulty building public facilities.
14. What plays a key role in the boom of digital businesses in emerging markets?
A. The steady annual income.
B. The low cost of launching businesses.
C. The simplified procedure of setting up a business.
D. The thorough removal of the most feared obstacle.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Emerging Economies Are Seeking Their Fortune
B. The Digital Impact Is Huge on Global Productivity
C. The Era of Rapid Digitization Is Around the Corner
D. Digital Technology Will Save Slow Emerging Markets

From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming in the sky. By the time she took a break at 2:30, the wind was picking up and the sky was darkening. The pool manager announced over the loudspeaker that the pool was closing immediately, due to a weather warning. He asked everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.
All of the swimmers had left by 3: 30 except for Jessica’s neighbor, eight-year-old Zack Hill. Zack’s mother had dropped him off at the pool while she went to work. She had planned to pick him up later, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided that she would drop Zack off on her way home. She taped a note for Mrs. Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.
The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. The wind was very strong, the storm clouds were dark, and the sky had turned a terrible green. The rain hit just as Jessica turned onto her street, Jessica said, “Jack, I’m going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine.”
She pressed the garage-door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way out of the car and into the house. Jessica held Zack’s hand firmly. The door was heavy with the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica’s hand and it hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces. Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.

第二节(满分25分)
【参考范文】
Remembering everything she could learn from her emergency training, Jessica took Zack to the basement. It was completely dark inside due to lack of electricity. They felt their way in the darkness. Suddenly, Jessica bumped into an armchair and she placed Zack in it. “We’ll be safe here,” she said, trying to sound calm. At times, they could hear the sound of glass breaking and the furniture being thrown against the walls by the howling wind. Jessica could feel Zack trembling hard in terror.
After a final crash, the sound of the storm grew distant. Jessica breathed a sigh of relief. When they were back into the house, they saw the room in a total mess. Glass pieces and broken furniture were everywhere. It was not long before Mrs. Hill arrived. Needless to say, she was very thankful for what Jessica did. Without Jessica, she could hardly imagine what would have happened to Zack. After giving each other a big hug, Jessica and Zack waved goodbye. What a story they would have to tell!
