Russ Miller was found to have a serious illness at 26. This condition affected his joints (关节), making it increasingly difficult for him to do everyday tasks.
“My hands are not shaped properly and I can’t manipulate them normally,” Miller wrote to the company where he worked. “I can no longer use normal computer keyboards and it’s hard for me to even hold a pen anymore.”
Miller’s condition quickly got worse, leading him to lose his job. Unable to afford the apartment, he had to live on the street. However, in 2018, he began to turn his life around.
“I was trying to ask for help and get out of my situation. I had a phone, but typing on regular (常规的) keyboards was difficult. So I looked for different smartphone keyboards. I found Typewise by accident,” Miller recalled.
He was very thankful for the Typewise smartphone keyboard, which he found much easier to use. It helped him “get his life back” by allowing him to communicate with people, get an apartment, and even a job.
“Since I could type on my phone again, I used social media to contact an organization that helps people with disabilities,” Miller said. “Now I have a part-time job taking care of dogs and cats. I can’t work full time due to my physical problems, but at least I have something to do and look forward to.”
4. What happened to Miller when he was 26?
A. He broke his hand joints. B. He learned to fix computers.
C. He suffered from a serious disease. D. He made a great mistake at work.
5. What does the underlined word “manipulate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Meet. B. Wash. C. Control. D. Picture.
6. Which helped Miller change his life in 2018?
A. A smartphone keyboard. B. The advice of a stranger.
C. A call from his company. D. The support from friends.
7. What does Miller say about his life now?
A. It makes him work full time. B. It is more difficult than before.
C. It is filled with uncertainties. D. It brings him a sense of purpose.

In today’s busy world, lots of people often miss meals. Sometimes they do this on purpose. However, a new study shows that not having three regular meals a day might have a serious downside.
This study surveyed 24,000 people. About three in ten of them usually ate two meals a day. The findings showed that younger people, and those with less education were more likely to miss meals. People who missed meals were also more likely to smoke more, drink more, eat less healthy food, snack more, and take in less energy overall.
Compared to those who ate three meals regularly a day, participants (参与者) who ate one meal daily had a 30% higher risk of all-cause death and an 83% higher risk of cardiovascular (心血管) disease (CVD) death. Those who ate two meals a day faced a 7% increased risk of all-cause death and a 10% higher risk of CVD death. Specifically, missing breakfast resulted in a 40% higher CVD death rate compared to those who didn’t. Missing lunch led to a 12% higher all-cause death risk, and not eating dinner brought a 16% higher risk.
Interestingly, even people who ate all three meals but had them too close together faced risks. Eating two meals within 4.5 hours was also connected with a higher risk of death from all causes. While some think that intermittent (间歇的) fasting is good for us, the researchers hold that regular meals are important for the body to work well and stay healthy.
8. What does the new study find about missing meals?
A. It is harmful to our health. B. It is a way to lose weight.
C. It hardly attracts students. D. It saves people much time.
9. Which is the percentage of the participants eating two meals a day?
A. 12%. B. About 30%. C. 40%. D. About 80%.
10. How does the author present the result of the study?
A. By following time order. B. By describing goals.
C. By explaining an idea. D. By listing numbers.
11. Which statement do the researchers probably agree with?
A. Intermittent fasting works for all. B. Having dinner late sounds practical.
C. Three well-timed meals matter to us. D. We can eat two meals close together.
D
Art and science may seem totally different. Some people believe that art is about creative ideas, while science means cold data (数据). However, they actually have a lot in common. A study even showed that art can help students better remember what they’ve learned in science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, found that students using art in class listened more carefully, asked more questions, and volunteered more ideas. To prove this, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment (实验), the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided both traditional and art-centered science lessons. In art-centered classes, students might sing the information instead of just reading it.
The team divided 350 students into two groups. One group started with traditional science classes, while the other began with art-centered ones. About three weeks later, the students switched (对调). This way, each student experienced both teaching methods. Every unit was taught in both ways to different groups. This helped researchers compare how students performed in each type of class.
The results showed that students who started off in traditional classes did better after moving to art-centered ones. Those who started with art-centered classes continued to do well even when they went back to traditional classes. These students seemed to use the art skills they’d learned. Teachers also reported that many students kept singing the songs they learned after finishing the unit. Hardiman said, “The more we hear something, the more we remember it. Art might help students find creative ways to learn on their own.”
12. What is a common belief about art and science?
A. They can lift our spirits. B. They share a lot in common.
C. They are like opposite things. D. They teach us to be reasonable.
13. What were the students asked to do in the experiment?
A. Lead group discussions. B. Attend two kinds of classes.
C. Give a speech in the lab. D. Pick their favourite teachers.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the experiment?
A. Its process. B. Its change. C. Its importance. D. Its advantage.
15. How do the students probably benefit from art according to Hardiman?
A. Learn about teamwork. B. Forget terrible memories.
C. Improve language skills. D. Develop creative learning.

I was walking to our local pharmacy (药房) when I suddenly remembered I needed to buy a special type of cat food from the vet (兽医) for my daughter’s cat. She couldn’t afford to pay for the expensive food so I had to pay for it. To be honest, paying $300 a month for the cat food made me feel stressed.
When I entered the vet hospital, the vet helper was helping another customer. She knew what kind of cat food I needed to buy and asked if I wanted a partial case (半箱) or a full case. Thinking I was always busy, I decided to buy a full one.
Just then another new customer hurried in and rushed to the front of the vet helper. The vet helper asked him to wait after me. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I told the helper to serve the gentleman first. I could go to the pharmacy and give them time to do the paperwork while I was gone.
The helper said “Thanks, that would be great!”
The gentleman said sorry for his cutting in the line just now because of something important to do, and said, “You should go first— you were here before me.”
“No worries, you go right ahead. My pleasure,” I said.
He jokingly replied, “Wow, how can I thank you?”

Compared to those who ate three meals regularly a day, participants (参与者) who ate one meal daily had a 30% higher risk of all-cause death and an 83% higher risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease (CVD) death.

10. How does the author present the result of the study?
A. By following time order. B. By describing goals.
C. By explaining an idea. D. By listing numbers.
11. Which statement do the researchers probably agree with?

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D

【答案】
Dear Paul,
I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to you because I’m having a hard time communicating with my parents.
We seem to be in different worlds. They are constantly worried about my academic performance and future, while I have my own dreams and interests. Every time I try to talk about them, they either dismiss them or force me to focus on what they think is important. This has led to many arguments and made the atmosphere at home very tense. I’m really confused and don’t know how to make them understand me. I hope you can offer some practical advice to help me improve this situation.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The helper said, “Thanks, that would be great!”
The gentleman said sorry for his cutting in the line just now because of something important to do, and said, “You should go first— you were here before me.”
“No worries, you go right ahead. My pleasure,” I said.
He jokingly replied, “Wow, how can I thank you?”
Not really thinking, I blurted out (脱口而出), “You could buy me a bag of cat food. Haha.” I laughed and left.

【答案】参考范文:
I went back to the vet’s after about ten minutes. I walked up to the vet helper, and she was waiting with a huge grin. “You don’t have to pay! That gentleman bought all your cat food for you!” “What the? !” I was so surprised. “Did he know how much it cost before he decided to buy it?” “Yes! He asked first. I thanked him many times for you! I also asked him why he bought the food for you. He said your kindness just now helped him a lot and you asked him to do so, too. He wanted to pass on your kindness.”
Holding the cat food paid by the gentleman I felt good inside. The gentleman’s action not only made it easier for me to pay for the cat food but also made me believe in the kindness of people. On my way home, I couldn’t stop smiling, thinking about how being polite had led to such a nice surprise. I decided that I would keep looking for opportunities to help others, no matter how small, to keep the cycle of kindness going.
