As children we are well-trained to find the right answer. We are rewarded for A's, the honor roll and acing the test. Our education trains us to follow the rules and deliver the expected answers. When we do, awards and congratulations follow. Yet when we grow up, it gets a little harder. Life and careers don’t have tests with an A if we get the “right” answer.
I recently had coffee with a college student who will graduate. She is struggling with what she wants for her career. She wants her parents to be proud of her and to continue the success she has had in school. She also talked about other students in her graduating class who are set to do "some big things," like working for impressive companies. Yet she wasn't sure of the right answer for using her degree. She said that deep down she was hoping that someone might give her the answer.
We both agreed that it comes down to not looking for the right answer, but her answer. The grown-up definition of the “right answer" is different than that in school. What would you do if you weren't afraid? It takes time to know these answers. And they can change over time and at any point in your career. My encouragement is to get valued advice and input, of course, but finally to look within yourself for the answers. It helps to come back to:
What do I want to be known for? What is my definition of success? What am I best at?
If I had no fears, what would I do?
What is one step I can take today to move me toward my goal (even if it's not perfectly clear)?
I find these types of questions are more helpful at getting to our unique answer rather than “right answer” questions, such as: What will my parents want? What degree or job will mark me as accomplished to the world? What is my best option based on where I work today?
4. What does the author mean to say in the first paragraph?
A. Life is harder for adults than children.
B. Academic excellence is not necessary.
C. It is not helpful to follow the rules in school.
D. Rules in life are different from those in school.
5. What is wrong with the college student?
A. She does badly in her studies.
B. Her parents are not proud of her.
C. She feels puzzled about her life career.
D. She is not sure whether to do" some big things".
6. When looking for the answer in life, you need to .
A. trust your parents
B. listen to your heart
C. follow valued advice
D. learn from your classmates
7. Which of the following questions might not help you to seek your answer?
A. What do I love to do?
B. What matters most to me in life?
C. What will make me look successful?
D. What will I regret not doing when I'm 80?
C
French fries are served hot, either soft or crispy, and are generally eaten as part of lunch or dinner or by themselves as a snack. They commonly appear on the menus of diners, fast food restaurants, pubs, and bars. They are usually salted and may be served with ketchup (番茄酱), vinegar, or other local specialties, depending on the country. French fries are a very common fast food dish in Europe.
But this year, a poor potato harvest in Europe this summer could mean French fries are up to three centimetres shorter than usual. The poor harvest is because of the very hot summer Europe had. There were record hot temperatures in many countries. The heatwave caused a lack of rain, which meant farmers produced a lot fewer potatoes than they normally do. Pierre Lebrun, a spokesman from a potato growers’ association in Belgium, said farmers grew 25 percent fewer potatoes than normal. The effect of this is that potato prices are up and the average size of potatoes is smaller.
Belgium is one country where the French fries are very popular. There are over 5,000 eateries which serve and specialise in fries in Belgium. Belgians go there and enjoy themselves at mealtime. They love fries so much that there is a campaign to rename them “Belgian fries” instead of “French fries” because Belgians say the fry was invented in their country. Belgium is one of the largest exporters of frozen fries in the world. It exports around 2.3 million tons of them every year. Mr Lebrun explained why fries would be shorter. He said, “Generally, to have long fries, we work with potatoes with a diameter of more than 50mm. Then you get fries of 8 to 9 cm. This time, as the potatoes are smaller, the fries will be shorter.”
8. From the first paragraph we can learn French fries _______.
A. can be served in different ways B. can be served only at dinner
C. can’t be ordered in a popular bar D. can’t be served as snacks in Europe
9. Why are the French fries shorter than usual?
A. The businessmen want to make more money.
B. The cold weather reduced the production of the potatoes.
C. People don’t like French fries any more for healthier life.
D. The high temperatures in this summer made the potatoes smaller.
10. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Parks. B. Restaurants. C. Supermarkets. D. Shopping malls.
11. According to the passage, the argument between Belgians and Frenchmen is _______.
A. which country is the largest exporter of French fries in the world
B. how they can grow bigger potatoes
C. who invented the fry
D. why they love French fries
D
Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less selfconscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12inch plate instead of a 10inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
12. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____________.
A. their home comforts B. their body shape
C. house buying D. healthy diets
13. A home environment in blue can help people ______________.
A. digest food better B. reduce food intake
C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites
14. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music.
C. Use smaller spoons. D. Turn down the lights.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Your House Making You Fat? B. Ways of Serving Dinner
C. Effects of SelfConsciousness D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. ”Man, that’s a big dog!" he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easily caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.
注意:1、续写词数应为150个左右;
2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The car abruptly stopped in front of him.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Mac jumped off his bicycle and rushed to the door of the car. But before Mac could open the door, the wolf had caught up and jumped to attack. Luckily, the magic spray saved Mac a third time. Seeing the wolf back off, Paul quickly unlocked the door, and the frightened man climbed into the car in no time, shutting the door behind him heavily. Becky looked out of the back window and saw the wolf standing over Mac’s bicycle as if it were a kill. Soon after, the animal ran off.
Paragraph 2:
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. Mac got out of the car and hugged his friends. “It was really a nightmare and I thought I was going to die,” said Mac in a shaky voice, tears gathering in his eyes. For him, life could never be more beautiful. After saying goodbye to Paul and Becky with gratitude, the three men continued their trip, agreeing never to separate again.
