New way of detecting oxygen on exoplanets could help find life The search for oxygen on other planets outside of our solar system, called exoplanets, is thought to be an aid in the search for life outside of Earth. Now, astronomers 1 (develop) a new method for detecting oxygen on exoplanets, according to a new study published Monday. The scientists believe their new method could speed up the search for life by making 2 easier to tell if individual exoplanets could host life on their surfaces by looking at their atmospheres. For example, if an alien species was searching for life outside of their planet, one of the ways they 3 tell Earth hosted life is because of the presence of biosignatures, such as oxygen. Individual organisms like plants on Earth produce oxygen 4 photosynthesis. The new method will rely on detecting the strong signal 5 (create) when oxygen molecules collide in the atmospheres of exoplanets. The method will be used by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, 6 will be able to peer into the atmospheres of exoplanets and search for this signal. The telescope will launch later and take a closer look at mysterious exoplanet targets already identified by previous planet-hunting missions such as NASA’s Kepler and TESS. This unique signal produced by oxygen molecule collisions could actually help astronomers decide 7 the planet hosts life or not. Once this determination 8 (make), they can quickly move on in the search. “Before our work, oxygen at similar levels as on Earth was thought 9 (be) undetectable with Webb,” said Thomas Fauchez, lead study author at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “This oxygen signal is known since the early 1980s from Earth’s atmospheric studies but has never been studied for exoplanet research.” The collision of the oxygen molecules is key 10 they block infrared (红外线的) light from the telescope, creating patterns in the spectrum (光谱) that help determine the composition of the atmosphere. To create their method, the researchers calculated the amount of light expected to be blocked out by the collisions. Section B Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. More than a third of translators have lost work due to generative AI, a recent survey has found. More than four in ten translators said that their income has decreased because of the 11 technology. More than three quarters believe that it will negatively affect their future income. The survey was run by the Society of Authors (SoA), the U.K.’s largest trade union (工会) for writers, illustrators, and translators. It found that 37 percent of translators had used generative AI to support their work. Eight percent were asked to use it by their publisher or commissioning organization. Thomas Bunstead, whose translations from Spanish include The Book of All Loves by Agustín Fernández Mallo, said that it is important to distinguish between literary translators and commercial translators. “Though a third of translators think that they’ve lost work to AI already, literary translation 12 in the hands of humans,” he said. “The work that has been handed over to AI will be the kind of 13 stuff which doesn’t require so much nuance (细微差别), such as instruction 14 .” Nichola Smalley, whose translations from Swedish and Norwegian include A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding by Amanda Svensson, agrees with this. “But perhaps the people translating crime and romance novels who are currently getting less work due to AI will all start getting into the 15 stuff,” she said. “We’ll all be fighting for space in that job. I hope not.” Ian Giles, co-chair of the Translators Association, said that his income from commercial translation work has 16 fallen since the beginning of last year. The loss of non-literary 17 of income for literary translators will mean “the raising of the 18 to entry into the industry, with only those with wealth will be able to translate literature for publication”. He also said that cost-cutting is not restricted to non-literary translation. A publisher specializing in e-books and audio books, for which Giles previously translated, has switched to a process known as post-editing, where an AI translator has a first go at translating a text before a human editor checks it and makes changes. Nuanxed is a company that facilitates translation via post-editing. It said that while human translators are “essential in maintaining high quality literature in translation,” their “methodologies will need to evolve alongside technological advancements.” However, Smalley is concerned that post-editing can create “a lot more work” for translators. They must carefully compare texts to catch 19 and “poor or unidiomatic (不地道的)” style. “Colleagues who have done post-editing work say that it requires a far higher degree of attention because the AI-generated text often reads so 20 ,” she said. “I’m certain that the act of creative and literary translation will live on in one shape or another,” said Giles. “For many, there’s a deep-seated desire to translate and I also believe that there’s an audience that desires human-translated content.” III.Reading Comprehension (共45分。 41-45每题1分;56-70每题2分) Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context For the past five years, I’ve been studying reading on-screen and in print. What I’ve found out is that while digital devices may be fine for reading that we don’t intend to 21 or reread, text that requires what’s been called “deep reading” is nearly always better done in print. Readers themselves have a sharp sense of what kind of reading is best suited for which 22 . My survey research with university students in the United States, Germany, and Japan shows that if cost were the same, about 90 percent would 23 hard copy for schoolwork and long texts. But for light reading and 24 texts, 50 percent would choose to read on-screen. Digital reading also 25 distraction and invites multitasking. Among American and Japanese subjects, 92 percent reported it was easiest to concentrate when reading in hard copy. In Germany, 26 percent indicated they were 26 to multitask while reading in print, compared with 85 percent when reading on-screen. Imagine 27 with a Shakespearean play on-screen while at the same time logging into your social media site and booking a vacation flight. You get the point. Several open-ended questions on my survey were particularly 28 . Common 29 to “What do you like most about reading in print?” included “I can write on the pages and remember the material easier” and “it’s easier to focus.” when asked what they liked least about reading 30 , a number Japanese students reported that it wasn’t “real reading,” while respondents from all three countries complained that they “get distracted” or “don’t absorb as much.” My all-time favorite reply to the question “What is the one thing you 31 about reading in print?” came from an American: “It takes me longer because I read more carefully.” But isn’t careful reading what schools are supposed to promote? All this brings us to the humanities (人文学科), which are based on long-form reading. Readings in the humanities tend to be lengthy, intellectually (智力地) weighty, or both. The 32 of digital reading for the humanities is that screens — particularly those on devices with Internet connections affect our encounters with stimulating texts. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty forces will come to your aid. Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again. Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize. Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet — and stopped him cold.” Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds. So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed. 36.Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past? A.He faced huge risks. B.He lacked mighty forces. C.Fear prevented him from trying. D.Failure blocked his way to success. 37.What is the implied meaning of the underlined part? A.Swallow more than you can digest. B.Act slightly above your abilities. C.Develop more mysterious powers. D.Learn to make creative decisions. 38.What can be learned from Paragraph 5? A.Confidence grows more rapidly in adults. B.Trying without success is meaningless. C.Repeated failure creates a better life. D.Boldness can be gained little by little. 39.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A.To encourage people to be courageous. B.To advise people to build up physical power. C.To tell people the ways to guarantee success. D.To recommend people to develop more abilities. A.Oct.21 B.Nov.11 C.Nov.16 D.Nov.20 (C) Rain is just airborne bacteria’s way of getting down to the ground. That’s the conclusion of an analysis of snow samples from around the world, which reveal that rain-making bacteria does exist in the atmosphere. The idea that bacterial cells could lead to rain is not new, but until now no one had appreciated the extent to which biological particles (颗粒) apparently contributed to rainfall. “They are everywhere in the atmosphere,” says Brent Christner of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. “It’s hard to believe they couldn’t have some impact on rainfall.” The particles that Christner is referring to come from bacteria with “ice-nucleating” proteins, which facilitate the formation of ice, on their cell surface. For example, the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae has a protein which binds water molecules together in a pattern that allows ice to form at warmer temperatures. When the bacterial ice fall from the clouds, they produce snow, or if they melt, rain. Christner and his colleagues collected snow soon after it had fallen from 19 locations in France, the US and Antarctica, and found evidence of ice-nucleating proteins at all the sites. This means that rain-making bacteria are present in the atmosphere. “There’s no reason they couldn’t be in clouds too,” says Christner. If ice-nucleating proteins are found in clouds, this would raise the possibility that the proteins evolved as part of the bacterial life cycle. Many bacteria get swept up into the atmosphere, and although there are nutrients and water present in clouds, they might not wish to stay long. “The really interesting thing is that the majority of ice nucleators in their samples are biological,” says Tim Lenton of the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. Since bacteria make their living at ground level, rain may be a way to get themselves out of the clouds, he adds. It should be possible to turn this ability to our advantage, says Christner. “In places that suffer drought you could plant crops that harbour bacteria to increase precipitation.” P. syringae grows on the leaves of plants and is well-known as a pathogen that causes frost damage. So farmers could only use rain-making bacteria in places where it doesn’t get cold enough for ground frost to form. 43.According to the passage, what did Brent Christner’s team discover in their analysis of snow samples? A.They discovered bacteria that contribute to rainfall. B.They found no evidence of bacteria in the atmosphere. C.They determined that biological particles do not affect rainfall. D.They found that ice-nucleating proteins are rare in snow samples. 44.What can be inferred about the role of ice-nucleating proteins in clouds based on the passage? A.They are unrelated to bacterial life cycles. B.They only form in very cold temperatures. C.They prevent the formation of snow and rain. D.They may help bacteria drop from the atmosphere. 45.Why does the author mention the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae in the passage? A.To explain why bacteria prefer to stay in clouds. B.To illustrate how bacteria facilitate ice formation. C.To show that most bacteria have ice-nucleating proteins. D.To give an example of how bacteria can survive extreme cold. 46.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A.Bacteria make rain to get back home. B.Bacteria protect against too much rain. C.Bacteria are found in most areas on Earth. D.Bacteria turn climate change to their advantage. Section C Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need. Life would be a lot sweeter if you were a memory athlete. Most of us however, are not wired that way. But don’t be discouraged: thanks to neuroplasticity, anyone can transcend their fallible memory. 47 . There are a few relatively simple things a person can do to help improve their memory function. First up, the basics: the foundation of good memory is good health. Eating and sleeping right will lead to optimal brain function, the flow-on effect of which is a better memory. 48 . A mnemonic device is a trick designed to make remembering things easier. So instead of remembering to buy eggs, rice, apples and dog food, it might be easier to think of READ, which stands for rice, eggs, apples, and dog food. This is the acrostic method. Another more complicated mnemonic technique is called a mind palace. Let’s use the same shopping list as an example. Instead of focusing on the word “rice,” this technique works by focusing on the image of rice thrown on the ground in a yard. For eggs, picture a hen pecking at the rice, followed by a nearby tree of apple blossoms, the petals falling around the hen, falling on a sleeping dog. 49 . This technique, where you base a memory around visual images, is more formally called ‘method of loci’. A recent study published in Neuron has unearthed some interesting insights about the brains of competitive memorizers. The researchers invited 23 of the world’s top 50 memory athletes to have their brains scanned in rest states, and while performing memory tests, and matched each champion to a control participant. Anatomically (解剖学上), the scans showed there was no difference in brain structure or region size between the groups. 50 And what’s more, after they gave the “naïve” control group training in the method of loci, their neural connectivity began to look more like that of the pros. A.What you’re born with isn’t what you’re stuck with. B.Where the difference was observed was in connectivity. C.Once the interconnected scene is created it’s a simple visual to ease your way around the halls of the grocery store with no list needed. D.Training in method of loci can physically change the way a person remembers. E.Then there are more deliberate approaches like practicing mnemonics F.The improved memory observed after mnemonic training persists for as long as 4 months after training concludes. IV.Summary Writing 51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. C. The truck disappeared from the parking lot. D. The truck was covered with silver material. 【答案】11. A 12. D 13. A 【解析】 【原文】The police released first video emergency yesterday of the two men who were believed to be involved in robbing a jewelry shop in the city seven days ago. But the video pictures taken a week ago were not very clear. The camera which filmed the men was about 200 meters away from a parked truck which the robbers later used as a running away vehicle. The men were also filmed wearing helmets as they ran towards the truck after the robbery. The pictures are timed at 9:05 a.m. last Saturday, just half an hour before the robbery occurred. Witnesses have confirmed that some time during this half an hour, they saw the two men without helmets leave the truck separately. Despite the quality of the video, the police believe the robbers are not difficult to recognize. The first suspect who got at the drive side of the truck was about 5 feet and 6 inches tall and fat. He was wearing a grey jacket and dark trousers. The passenger was thinner and slightly taller, about 5 feet and 8 inches. He was wearing light blue jeans and white jacket. According to the police, the truck stored in the parking lot of the city mall last month has been repainted from white to silver, with a false registration plate. Questions: 11. What did the two men rob? 12. What did the witnesses see the two men do? 13. Which of the following is true about the truck? Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. 14. A. In order to protect the weak and old ones. B. In order to show beautiful shape of them. C. In order to maintain physical strength. D. In order to keep teamwork spirit. 15. A. How the birds decide the order of the group. B. How the birds decide the route of the group. C. How the birds decide the time of flying of the group. D. How the birds decide who takes charge of the group. 16. A. Birds’ ability to keep order. B. Birds’ flying pattern as a team. C. Birds’ intention to migrate. D. Birds’ skills to tell directions. 【答案】14. C 15. D 16. B 【解析】 【原文】Scientists have long been interested in why birds fly in a shape which looks like the letter V. Using modern technology, they observed and came to the conclusion that birds fly that way to save energy. British scientists attached small GPS navigation devices to the back of a bird called Bald Ibises to track wing movements. The recordings showed that the birds were able to use the upward airstream created by the wing tips of the bird just in front of it. Scientists had predicted that birds could take advantage of this by flying in a V-shape, but actually no one understood how the upward air could be captured. With the help of the microlight aircraft, the British scientists followed the birds on their migration to Italy. The GPS devices were so precise that they recorded in real time the position and speed of each bird within the group of the birds. Scientists say they were impressed at how each bird was able to respond to the movement of the one just in front. In the following research, scientists plan to study how the birds decide who should be responsible for the group on their annual migrations across Europe. Questions: 14. What’s the reason of birds flying in V-shape? 15. What do the scientists plan to study next? 16. What is the passage mainly about? Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation. 17. A. Beautiful scenery in the countryside. B. Cross-country skiing. C. Dangers of winter sports. D. Pain and pleasure in sports. 18. A. He can’t find good examples to illustrate his point. B. He can’t find a peaceful place to do the assignment. C. He can’t decide whether to include the effort part of skiing. D. He doesn’t know how to describe the beautiful country scenery. 19. A. New ideas come up as you write. B. Much time is spent on collecting data. C. It’s hard to find a proper topic. D. The writer’s point of view often changes. 20. A. How to revise a paper in an academic manner. B. How to polish your arguments in a paper. C. How to tell the main ideas in a paper effectively. D. How to decide on relevant content for a paper. 【答案】17. B 18. C 19. A 20. D 【解析】 【原文】M: Hello, Professor Jones. W: Hello, Tony. So what shall we work on today? M: Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn’t coming out right. What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me—one I take part in. W: What sport did you choose? M: I decided to write about cross-country skiing. W: What are you going to say about skiing? M: That’s the problem. I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country. W: So why is that a problem? M: As I start describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods, I keep mentioning how much effort it takes to keep going. Cross-country skiing isn’t as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy. But that’s not part of my paper, so I guess I should leave it out. But now I don’t know how to explain that feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for it. It all fits together. It’s not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds rolling by. That’s different. W: Then you’ll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross-country skiing is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out? Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That’s common, right? M: Yeah, I guess so ... Questions 17. What is the topic of the man’s writing assignment? 18. What problem does the man have while working on his paper? 19. What does the woman say is common in writing papers? 20. What is the conversation mainly about? For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. 【答案】 1.have developed/are developing 2.it 3.could 4.through 5.created 6.which 7.whether 8.is made 9.to be 10.because/as/since 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故填have developed或are developing。 2.考查it作形式宾语。句意:科学家们认为,他们的新方法可以通过观察系外行星的大气层,更容易地判断个别系外行星的表面是否可能存在生命,从而加快寻找生命的步伐。此处用it作形式宾语,后面的不定式to tell if individual exoplanets could host life on their surfaces by looking at their atmospheres作真正的宾语。故填it。 3.考查情态动词。句意:例如,如果一个外星物种正在他们的星球之外寻找生命,他们能判断地球上有生命存在的方式之一就是因为存在生物特征,比如氧气。根据was searching和tell Earth hosted life可知,此处表示“过去的能力”,用情态动词could。故填could。 4.考查介词。句意:像地球上的植物这样的个体生物通过光合作用产生氧气。此处表示“通过”,用介词through。故填through。 5. 故填which。 7.考查宾语从句。句意:氧分子碰撞产生的这种独特信号实际上可以帮助天文学家决定这个星球上是否有生命存在。空格处引导宾语从句,表示“是否”,用whether引导该从句。故填whether。 8.考查时态和语态。句意:一旦做出了这个判断,他们就可以迅速继续进行搜索。Once引导的时间状语从句描述现在的情况,时态用一般现在时,make与主语determination之间是被动关系,用一般现在时的被动语态,主语determination是第三人称单数,be动词用is。故填is made。 9.考查非谓语动词。句意:“在我们的研究之前,人们认为用韦伯望远镜无法探测到与地球上相似水平的氧气,”美国宇航局戈达德太空飞行中心的首席研究作者Thomas Fauchez说。be thought to do...是固定短语,意为“被认为……”,本空用be的不定式,作主语补足语。故填to be。 10.考查状语从句。句意:氧分子的碰撞是关键,因为它们阻挡了射向望远镜的红外光,在光谱中形成了有助于确定大气成分的模式。前后句是因果关系,后句解释原因,用because/as/since引导原因状语从句。故填because/as/since。 Section B Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. “For many, there’s a deep-seated desire to translate and I also believe that there’s an audience that desires human-translated content.” 【答案】 11.I 12.G 13.E 14.B 15.K 16.H 17.J 18.C 19.A 20.F 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是生成式人工智能(AI)对译员工作及收入的影响。 11.考查形容词。句意:超过四成的翻译人员表示,由于这种新兴技术,他们的收入减少了。由上文“generative AI”可知,句子表示“由于这种新兴技术,他们的收入减少了”,空格处意为“新兴的”,是emerging,形容词作定语。故选I。 12. 由下文“doesn’t require so much nuance”可知,空格处意为“日常的,基本的”,修饰stuff,是bread-and-butter,形容词作定语。故选E。 14.考查名词。句意:那些交给人工智能处理的工作将是那些不需要太多细微差别的日常事务,比如使用说明书之类的。由上文“instruction”和“which doesn’t require so much nuance”可知,空格处意为“使用手册,说明书”,是manual,要用复数。故选B。 15. 由下文“entry into the industry, with only those with wealth will be able to translate literature for publication”可知,进入这个行业的门槛提高了,空格处意为“门槛”,是bar,由to entry into the industry可知,此处用单数,作介词宾语。故选C。 19.考查名词。句意:他们必须仔细比较文本,以发现误读和“拙劣或不地道”的风格。由下文“and “poor or unidiomatic (不地道的)” style”可知,他们必须仔细比较文本才能发现误读和“拙劣或不地道”的风格”,空格处意为“误读”,是misreading,是不可数名词,作宾语。故选A。 20.考查副词。句意:她说:“做过后期编辑工作的同事说,这需要更高程度的关注,因为人工智能生成的文本读起来非常可信。”由上文“it requires a far higher degree of attention”可知,人工智能生成的文本读起来非常可信,空格处意为“可信地”,是plausibly,副词作状语。故选F。 III.Reading Comprehension (共45分。 41-45每题1分;56-70每题2分) Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. These 33 weren’t designed for focused concentration, reading slowly, pausing to argue virtually with the author, or rereading. 34 , they are information and communication machines, best used for searching and fast reading. Teachers and scholars need to think more carefully about students’ increasing rejection of long-form reading, now 35 by digital technologies that further complicate our efforts to engage students in serious text-based knowledge seeking. 21.A.make for B.skip over C.search for D.chew over 22.A.level B.medium C.student D.assignment 23.A.prefer B.abandon C.share D.exchange 24.A.cheaper B.more literary C.shorter D.more important 25.A.replaces B.encourages C.discloses D.minimizes 26.A.likely B.unable C.surprised D.reluctant 27.A.competing B.associating C.struggling D.comparing 28.A.distracting B.complicated C.confusing D.revealing 29.A.responses B.links C.attachments D.introductions 30.A.widely B.casually C.digitally D.academically 31.A.evaluate B.dislike C.enjoy D.neglect 32.A.method B.pleasure C.highlight D.challenge 33.A.texts B.encounters C.devices D.connections 34.A.Otherwise B.Rather C.Fortunately D.Additionally 35.A.guided B.restored C.polarized D.intensified 【答案】 21.D 22.B 23.A 24.C 25.B 26.A 27.C 28.D 29.A 30.C 31.C 32.D 33.C 34.B 35.D 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了作者通过研究发现,对于需要“深度阅读”的文本,纸质阅读比电子阅读更有优势,同时也指出了数字阅读存在的一些问题以及对人文学科阅读的挑战。 21.考查动词短语辨析。句意:我发现,虽然数字设备可能适合阅读我们不打算仔细研读或重读的内容,但需要所谓“深度阅读”的文本几乎总是纸质阅读更好。A. make for走向;有助于;B. skip over跳过;C. search for寻找;D. chew over仔细考虑;仔细研读。根据下文“text that requires what’s been called “deep reading” is nearly always better done in print”可知这里是说需要深度阅读(仔细研读)的内容,纸质阅读更好,故选D项。 22.考查名词词义辨析。句意:读者自己对哪种阅读最适合哪种媒介有敏锐的认识。A. level水平;B. medium媒介;C. student学生;D. assignment任务。根据下文“My survey research with university students in the United States, Germany, and Japan shows that if cost were the same, about 90 percent would prefer hard copy for schoolwork and long texts. 【答案】36.C 37.B 38.D 39.A 【导语】这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者联系自己的经历说明要勇敢地尝试自己没有把握的事情,即使失败也比未尝试过好很多。 36.细节理解题。根据第二段中“It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all(通常是因为我害怕失败,这阻止了我去尝试)”可知,作者以前不能实现自己的目标是因为害怕阻止了他去尝试。故选C。 37.词句猜测题。根据划线部分下文“They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.(它们是我们拥有的潜在力量:能量、技能、合理的判断力、创造性的想法——甚至比我们大多数人意识到的还要强大。)”可知我们都有比自己意识到的更大的潜在力量,由此可知,我们要充分挖掘自己的潜力,要做稍微超出自己能力的事情,结合划线部分可知,画线部分表面意为“咬掉比你吃得要更多”,但实际是指要做稍微超出自己能力的事情。故选B。 38.细节理解题。根据第五段“Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. (大胆——愿意把自己发挥到极致——不是一夜之间就能获得的。但我们可以教给孩子,并在成年人身上扩展。建立信心。)”可知,自信不是一夜之间就能获得的,而是一点一点积累起来的。故选D。 39.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是倒数第二段中的“Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.(当然,生活中会有挫折和失望,勇气本身并不能保证成功。但是尝试做某事并失败的人,比那些什么都不做却成功的人要好得多。)”可知,作者联系自己的经历说明要勇敢地尝试自己没有把握的事情,即使失败也比未尝试过好很多。由此可知,作者的写作意图是鼓励人们要勇敢。故选A。 (B) How to place an Order of Custom JeansSelect the Fabric & Styles →Fabric (布料)—Select the Fabric from our large collection of Denim Fabric Samples. →Special Wash—Select your favorite special wash treatment to make your jeans look stylish. →Thread Color—Select the thread color you want. A.Oct.21 B.Nov.11 C.Nov.16 D.Nov.20 【答案】40.B 41.C 42.D 【分析】本文是一篇应用文,主要讲的是如何订购定制牛仔裤. 40.细节理解题。根据Select the Fabric & Styles部分的Fabric (布料)—Select the Fabric from our large collection of Denim Fabric Samples(面料-从我们大量的牛仔面料样品中选择面料);Fly Style - Select the fly style you want, the Zip Fly or the Button Fly(飞行风格-选择你想要的飞行风格,Zip飞行或按钮飞行);Pocket Style - Select the front pocket & back pocket style. If you want your own styled front & back pocket, select my own design & send us the photo of the pocket style you want. If you are going with our default (默认) pocket style, we will make your jeans with basic 5-pocket pattern(口袋风格-选择前口袋和后口袋风格。如果你想要你自己风格的前和后口袋,选择我自己的设计和发送你想要的我们的照片口袋风格。如果你使用我们默认的口袋样式,我们会为你制作基本的5口袋样式的牛仔裤);Thread Color—Select the thread color you want. You can select secondary thread color also, which can be used at certain stitches. Also, you can specify where you want to use the secondary thread under special not at the end of measurements(线的颜色选择你想要的线的颜色。你也可以选择次要的线色,可以用于某些针脚。此外,你还可以在特殊情况下(不是在测量结束时)指定要使用辅助线程的位置)可知,飞行风格的选择最少,只有两种可选。故选B。 41.细节理解题。根据Confirm Your Order部分的“On this page, you will see all the details you selected during order, you can again modify order by clicking edit tab. After confirming your order, press PROCEED tab.”(在此页面上,您将看到您在订单期间选择的所有详细信息,您可以通过单击编辑选项卡再次修改订单)可知,在付款之前,您可以检查您的订单的细节,并自由地进行多次修改。故选C。 42.细节理解题。根据Delivery部分的“we will deliver your jeans within 30 days. After dispatching from here, it will take 3-5 days to deliver in India and 6-9 days to deliver out of India”(将在30天内交货。从这里发货,到印度需要3-5天,从印度需要6-9天)可知,如果你在10月12日下海外订单,那么将在30天之内发货,从印度寄出海外需6-9天,因此收货时长为36-39天,即最晚不超过11月20日可以收货。故选D。 (C) Rain is just airborne bacteria’s way of getting down to the ground. 【答案】43.A 44.D 45.B 46.A 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项科学研究,通过对全球多地雪样的分析,证实大气中存在能促成降雨的细菌,探讨了这类细菌的作用机制、分布情况,并提及利用其特性缓解干旱的可能性。 43.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Christner and his colleagues collected snow soon after it had fallen from 19 locations in France, the US and Antarctica, and found evidence of ice-nucleating proteins at all the sites. This means that rain-making bacteria are present in the atmosphere.(克里斯纳及其同事在法国、美国和南极洲的19个地点收集了刚降下的雪,并在所有地点都发现了冰核蛋白的证据。这意味着大气中存在能促成降雨的细菌)”可知,克里斯纳团队在雪样分析中发现了促成降雨的细菌。故选A。 44.推理判断题。根据第六段“If ice-nucleating proteins are found in clouds, this would raise the possibility that the proteins evolved as part of the bacterial life cycle. Many bacteria get swept up into the atmosphere, and although there are nutrients and water present in clouds, they might not wish to stay long.(如果在云层中发现冰核蛋白,这将提高这种蛋白作为细菌生命周期的一部分进化的可能性。许多细菌被卷到大气中,尽管云层中有营养物质和水,但它们可能不希望停留太久)” 和第七段中“Since bacteria make their living at ground level, rain may be a way to get themselves out of the clouds, he adds.(他补充说,由于细菌在地面上生存,降雨可能是一种让细菌脱离云层的方法)”可推断,冰核蛋白可能帮助细菌从大气中降落。故选D。 45.推理判断题。根据第四段中“The particles that Christner is referring to come from bacteria with ‘ice-nucleating’ proteins, which facilitate the formation of ice, on their cell surface. For example, the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae has a protein which binds water molecules together in a pattern that allows ice to form at warmer temperatures.(克里斯纳所指的颗粒来自细胞表面带有‘冰核蛋白’的细菌,这种蛋白有助于冰的形成。 A。 Section C Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. 【答案】47.A 48.E 49.C 50.B 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一些改善记忆力的方法与技巧。 47.根据上文“But don’t be discouraged: thanks to neuroplasticity, anyone can transcend their fallible memory.(但请不要气馁:多亏了神经可塑性,任何人都能够超越自身易出错的记忆能力)”可知,人们的神经有可塑性,所以人们的记忆力可以改变。A项“你与生俱来的并不是无法摆脱的”符合文意。故选A。 48.根据后文“A mnemonic device is a trick designed to make remembering things easier. So instead of remembering to buy eggs, rice, apples and dog food, it might be easier to think of READ, which stands for rice, eggs, apples, and dog food. This is the acrostic method.(记忆技巧是一种旨在让记忆过程变得更轻松的策略。因此,人们不必记住要购买鸡蛋、大米、苹果和狗粮,而是可以将这些物品简称为“READ”,其中R代表大米,E代表鸡蛋,A代表苹果,D代表狗粮。这就是首字母法)”可知,后文介绍了一种记忆技巧,推测本句引出后文,E选项中mnemonics对应后文mnemonic device。故E项“接下来还有更为有针对性的方法,比如练习记忆技巧”符合文意。故选E。 49.根据上文“Another more complicated mnemonic technique is called a mind palace. Let’s use the same shopping list as an example. Instead of focusing on the word “rice,” this technique works by focusing on the image of rice thrown on the ground in a yard. For eggs, picture a hen pecking at the rice, followed by a nearby tree of apple blossoms, the petals falling around the hen, falling on a sleeping dog.(另一种更为复杂的记忆技巧被称为“记忆宫殿”。 50.根据上文“Anatomically (解剖学上), the scans showed there was no difference in brain structure or region size between the groups.(从解剖学角度来看,扫描结果显示各组之间的大脑结构和区域大小并无差异)”及下文“And what’s more, after they gave the “naïve” control group training in the method of loci, their neural connectivity began to look more like that of the pros.(而且更重要的是,在对“初学者”对照组进行位置记忆法的训练之后,他们的神经连接方式开始变得与专业人士的更为相似了)”可知,前文提到“扫描显示两组(记忆高手与普通人)的大脑结构或区域大小无差异”,后文转折“更重要的是,对照组经位置记忆法训练后,神经连接开始更像专业人士”,说明差异在于“神经连接”,故B项“发现差异的地方在于相互联系性方面”符合文意。故选B。 IV.Summary Writing 51.Directions: Read the following passage.
