VI. Guided Writing (25分)
Sample:
Dear Editor,
I’d like to help Alice with her problem. The main reason for her distress is the pressure from peer-based appearance standards. At school, there’s often an unconscious emphasis on physical appearance, and classmates’ thoughtless remarks like calling her“fatty” have made her feel self-conscious.
Also, the prevalence of images of “slim beauties” in the media might have further contributed to her envy and dissatisfaction with herself.
Here are some suggestions for Alice. Firstly, she should communicate her feelings to those classmates, making them aware that their words are hurtful. Secondly, she can focus on her inner qualities and talents rather than just appearance. For example, if she’s good at painting or singing, devoting more time to these activities can boost her self-esteem. Finally, she can lead a healthy lifestyle, not for the sake of conforming to others’ standards, but for her own well-being. By doing so, she can gradually build a more positive self-image.
Best regards,
Li Hua

We had this chat as I was just on my way home to surf in that myself. Well, IT was nice talking to you, and maybe i'll meet you in a chat room later tonight. Hi, bryan. How are you doing? The 17-year-old making films fun for deaf children
For eight-year-old Toby, who is deaf, watching films or TV can sometimes be a bit pointless, because so many of them don’t have sign language versions. “We have subtitles (字幕) but it goes too fast,” his dad Jarod Mills said. But now, Toby has some help thanks to an app 1 (develop) by a 17-year-old student, Mariella Satow, who created a signing app called SignUp.
She got the idea when she 2 (teach) herself American Sign Language (ASL) — one of hundreds of sign languages used across the world. Mariella wanted to watch TV shows to help her learn, and she was disappointed 3 (discover) how few had signed versions. It’s taken a year for Mariella to develop the technology, with lots of help from ASL teachers and the deaf community.
The app is available in the US as a browser extension — with an interpreter appearing in a box 4 the film starts playing. It only works on Disney Plus films at the moment, because that’s 5 Mariella thought she could help the most children. Jarod, 6 works at a school for deaf children, says it was “exciting” watching Toby use Mariella’s invention. He says, “Kids are getting information like any hearing child does.”
Deaf people in the UK face many of the same barriers when it comes to cinema and TV. “A hearing person 7 go to the cinema any time whereas deaf people have to make sure there’s a suitable viewing a time we’re free,” says 27-year-old Stacey Worboys from Cardiff. She has learned British Sign Language (BSL), and is comfortable using subtitles when watching TV shows and films. But she feels having an interpreter would make things 8 (easy), especially for someone who might struggle with subtitles.
Stacey and Toby aren’t the only people to be welcoming Mariella’s app. It’s now got thousands of users, and she’s working long days to balance it with her A-level studies. The time difference from New York to her school in Rugby, Warwickshire, means she sets her alarm for 5am.
She admits it’s “a bit tough” — but the silver lining is it gives her time to work on SignUp once lessons are over. The positive reaction from teachers and parents has kept Mariella 9 (motivate) to face the early starts. “The most meaningful comments are when it’s the first time a child 10 (have) full access to a movie. The numbers don’t really matter. Instead, it’s the messages.” she says.

G. initiative H. theoretically I. granted J. scale K. extremely
A growing number of smaller companies are adopting a four-day workweek. Now the results of a recent trial at Microsoft (MSFT) suggest it could work even for major corporations.
The company initiated a program this summer in Japan called the “Week Life Choice Challenge”, which shut down its offices every Friday in August and 11 all employees an additional day off each week. The results were striking: While the amount of time spent at work was cut substantially 12 measured by sales per employee went up by nearly 40% compared to the same period the previous year, the company stated in a release last week.
In addition to curtailing working hours, managers urged staff to cut down on the time they spent in meeting and responding to emails. They recommended that meetings should last to longer than 30 minutes. Employees were also encouraged to 13 down the number of meetings by using an online messaging app (Microsoft’s, of course). The effects were widespread. More than 90% of Microsoft’s 2,200 employees in Japan said they were 14 by the new measures, according to the company. A report reported the benefits of the new measures, according to the firm. By shutting down earlier stock, the company was also able to achieve significant savings in 15 costs such as electricity.
The initiative is timely. Japan has long struggled with a grim — and in some cases, fatal — culture of overwork. The problem is so severe that the country has even coined a term for it — kazouhi, meaning death by overwork resulting from 16 illnesses or severe depression.
The issue attracted international attention in 2015, when an employee at Japanese advertising giant Detsun committed suicide on Christmas Day. Tokyo authorities later concluded that she had been subjected to excessive overtime. Two years later, a journalist at a Japanese broadcasting network died after working 17 long hours. Her employer disclosed that she had 18 in 159 hours of overtime on month preceding her death.

Organizations and societies rely on fines and rewards to control people’s self-interest in the service of the common good. The 21 of a ticket keeps drivers in line, and the promise of a bonus inspires high performance. But incentives (激励) can also 22 , discouraging the very behaviour they’re meant to encourage.
A generation ago, Richard Titmuss claimed that paying people to donate blood 23 the supply. Economists were skeptical, citing a lack of scientific evidence. But since then, new data and models have prompted a sea change in how economists think about incentives — showing, among other things, that Titmuss was right in so many cases that businesses should 24 .
Experimental economists have found that offering to pay women for donating blood decreases the number willing to donate by almost half, and that letting them contribute the payment to charity 25 the effect. Dozens of recent experiments show that rewarding self-interest with economic incentives can have the opposite result when they destroy what Adam Smith called “the moral sentiments (情绪).” Psychology here has escaped blackboard economists, but it will be no surprise to people in business: When we take a job or buy a car, we are not only trying to get stuff — we are also trying to be a certain kind of person. 26 , people desire to be respected by others as ethical and dignified. And they don’t want to be taken for losers. Rewarding blood donations may not serve the intended purpose because it suggests that the donor is less interested in being 27 than in making a dollar. Incentives also run into trouble when they signal that the employee 28 the employee or is greedy. Close supervision of workers coupled with 29 for performance is textbook economics, but it can lead to the depression of employees.
Perhaps most important, incentives affect what our actions signal, whether we’re being self- interested or civic-minded, manipulated or trusted, and they can imply — sometimes wrongly — what 30 us. Fines or public criticism that appeal to our moral sentiments by signaling social disapproval(think of littering) can be highly effective. But incentives go wrong when they 31 or brake our ethical sensibilities.
This does not mean it’s 32 to appeal to self- interested and ethical motivations at the same time — just that efforts to do so often fail. 33 , policies support socially valued ends not only by controlling self- interest but also by encouraging public-spiritedness. The small tax on plastic grocery bags passed by law in Ireland in 2002 that 34 their virtual elimination appears to have had such an effect. It caused offenders 35 while conveying a moral message. Carrying a plastic bag joined wearing a fur coat in the gallery of outdated and socially unacceptable practice.

A. temptation诱惑;B. threat威胁;C. value价值;D. equivalent对等的人;当量。根据上文“Organizations and societies rely on fines and rewards to control people’s self-interest in the service of the common good.(组织和社会通过罚款和奖励的方式来引导人们的个人利益,以服务于公共利益)”可知,各类组织和团体依靠罚款和奖金来控制人们在公益服务中的自私自利。
A. overflow溢出;B. backfire适得其反;C. survive幸存;D. work工作。根据下文“discouraging the very behaviour they’re meant to encourage.”
A. reduced减少;B. affected影响;C. afforded给予;提供;D. balanced保持稳定。根据上文“But incentives (激励) can also ____2____, discouraging the very behaviour they’re meant to encourage.” 故选A。
A. cut back削减;B. stand by支持;袖手旁观;C. take note注意,记笔记;D. hold on等一下;继续。根据上文“Titmuss was right in so many cases”可推断,蒂姆穆斯在很多情况下都是正确,因此企业应该注意。故选C。
A. cause导致;B. reverse撤销;颠倒;C. take拿;取;D. detect发现;觉察。根据第一段的“But incentives can also ___2___, discouraging the very behavior they're meant to encourage.”及本句前文的对比关系“offering to pay women for donating blood decreases the number willing to donate by almost half, and that letting them contribute the payment to charity”可推断,激励会产生适得其反的结果,因此推断给献血的女性报酬会导致没有更多的人献血,但是让她们把献血所得给福利事业就扭转了局面。故选B。
A. In other words换句话说;B. On the contrary恰恰相反;C. By contrast相比之下;D. In addition此外。根据上文“Dozens of recent experiments show that rewarding self-interest with economic incentives can have the opposite result when they destroy what Adam Smith called “the moral sentiments.””
根据上文“letting them contribute the payment to charity”可知,此处说的是无私奉献与挣钱进行对比。故选A。
A. requirement要求;B. criticism批评;C. implication暗示;D. reward奖赏。
A. supports支持;B. threatens威胁;C. motivates激励;D. change改变。由破折号后对前文“whether we’re being self- interested or civic-minded, manipulated or trusted(我们是自私自利还是热心公益,被操控还是被信任)”解释说明可知,此处说的是是什么激励了我们。故选C。
A. refine改善;B. offend冒犯;C. control控制;D. arouse引起。由But可推断,上下文是转折关系,根据上文“Fines or public criticism that appeal to our moral sentiments by signaling social disapproval (think of littering) can be highly effective.(通过展示社会的不满情绪(比如乱扔垃圾这种行为)来引发我们的道德情感从而实施罚款或公开谴责,这种做法往往非常有效)”可推断,触犯或者破坏道德情感会让激励出问题。故选B。
根据下文“policies support socially valued ends not only by controlling self- interest but also by encouraging public-spiritedness(政策不但要通过治理自私,而且要通过鼓励公共道德来拥护社会上受重视的目标)”可知,这并不意味着同时启发自私自利且合乎道德的动机是不可能的。故选A。

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
I encountered the classics in university. I was 19, in love with literature and pursuing an undergraduate degree in English Literature. But with a lack of life experience, exams and focusing on grades, I couldn’t truly appreciate them. Middlemarch, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Pride and Prejudice, Madame Bovary: I loved these books, but I didn’t really get them.
Some 40 years later, as an editor and author, it’s my job to understand what makes a book tick. When a colleague suggested we deconstruct (解构) classics, I was excited. I had no idea what I was in for. Many were rereads of novels I loved. I wondered if they would still resonate (引起共鸣) and if my technology-damaged attention span could handle them.
Reading Middlemarch when you’re 19 is very different from when you’re 60 and have been through, well, life. Much of what Eliot was doing with marriage, relationships and expectations went over my young head. The characters and dialogue are masterful.
However, rereading Middlemarch was a scary idea. It’s a brick of a book with tiny print. So I tried the audiobook instead. I was swept away: I didn’t want to do anything except listen. I told a friend to read it again, amazed by how good, how relevant it is, even though it was published in 1871.
Maybe life hasn’t changed as much as we think. Madame Bovary gives big social media vibes. Everyone else is having a better time than Bovary. Everyone’s grass is greener. Nothing lives up to her expectations. The Picture of Dorian Gray shows that our obsessions with youth and beauty are nothing new. Oscar Wilde would have a lot to say about today’s selfies and social media personas (表面形象), which can be far from the truth.
We gave these books the attention they deserved-attention I couldn’t give at age 19. That’s why I recommend rereading. These authors understood something about humanity that still resonates, still makes us question our life choices.
Reading the classics is a way to reclaim (重拾) something in danger of being lost: the enjoyment of mastery in language, of characters so alive they could walk into our living room. Good fiction teaches something that we will always need: the ability to stand in another’s shoes and feel what they feel, and maybe come away with a new understanding.
36.What does the phrase “get them” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Memorize the plots. B.Appreciate the value deeply.
C.Finish reading quickly. D.Understand the authors’ background.
37.Why did the author try the audiobook when rereading Middlemarch?
A.To make the reading easier as the book is very thick with small print.
B.To follow the latest trend of reading audiobooks.
C.To share the reading experience with friends conveniently.
D.To improve her listening skills.
38.Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?
A.The author thinks classic books should only be read by adults.
B.Madame Bovary’s themes are unrelated to modern social media phenomena.
C.Rereading classics in different life stages can bring new insights.
D.Oscar Wilde’s works are outdated and not worth reading now.
39.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To criticize people’s lack of attention to classics.
B.To explain why she disliked classics in her youth.
C.To advocate for rereading classics and exploring their timeless value.
D.To compare the reading habits of teenagers and adults.

Top Scientists Take Sides
Famous Inducers
(Experiment> )
Gregor Mendel(1822-1884)
Mendel spent years recording variations in the appearance of peas and other living things. By analysing this data, he identified mathematical laws that govern genetics.
Alexander Fleming(1881-1955)
While studying bacteria, Fleming observed that bread mold (霉) could kill bacteria harmful to human health. This led him to discover penicillin, the first effective antibiotic.
Ernest Rutherford(1871-1937)
During an experiment, Rutherford noted that energetic particles could pass easily through thin metal foil (箔). From this evidence he formulated a scientific law: the atom is mostly empty space.
Famous Deducers
(Theory> Experiment)
Isaac Newton(1643-1727)
Inspired by the motion of falling objects(but probably not an apple!) Newton proposed that all objects attract each other. Only later did he perform calculations to prove that his idea, “universal gravitation,” was true.
Democritus(c. 460-370 B.C. )
Based on philosophical principles, Democritus argued that a material cannot be divided into smaller pieces forever; he called its smallest possible unit an “atom.” Democritus had no means to test his theory. But later experimenters proved atoms are real.
Alfred Wegener(1880-1930)
Noticing the interlockable shapes of the continents, Wegener made the bold proposal that Earth’s land masses began as a single, giant continent. Over many years, many disciplines including geology and fossilology would finally prove that his theory of “continental drift” is accurate.
40.Which of the following best define “Inducers” and “Deducers” according to the poster?
A.Inducers are those who arrive at a conclusion based on theories.
B.Inducers prefer to make experiments to prove some relative theories.
C.Deducers usually do more experiments than develop theories.
D.Deducers tend to arrive at a conclusion by reasoning or inference.
41.Which of the following is True according to the poster?
A.Mendel recognised mathematical laws governing genetics by farming.
B.Newton proposed the idea “universal gravitation” by observing the falling of apples.
C.It was Fleming who made the discovery of the first effective antibiotic.
D.Alfred Wegener created the theory of “continental drift” after he found rich evidence.
42.Where can this poster most probably be seen?

Frank Holmes, the chair of the Cardiff Capital Region’s Economic Growth Partnership, is figuring out how Wales, which has abundant renewable energy sources, can attract global investment ranging from AI to advanced engineering.
If Wales wants to find its place in the green revolution, it can learn something from Costa Rica. This Central American country has announced that 99% of its energy will come from renewables. As digitization is very energy-intensive, businesses are facing great pressure to become more sustainable. The prospect of clean energy gives Costa Rica a unique competitive advantage and forms the basis of its strategy to become a global semiconductor hub with US support.
So, if Costa Rica can do it, why not Wales? The Cardiff Capital Region (CCR), which covers the 10 local authorities in southeast Wales, is already home to a major area of compound semiconductors in Europe, fueling its extensive local supply chain.
But why not think bigger? AI can have a profitable future. The complexity of generating human-like answers means that AI uses about ten times as much power as normal. Google search and studies suggest that AI could consume as much energy as the Netherlands by 2027. Before AI, data centers had to be close to users to minimize delay time. But with AI, this is no longer the case.
If Wales can transition quickly enough, it can attract these industries with cheap and clean energy and support strong clusters that are crucial to economic growth. This will create high-value jobs, attract and retain graduates, which in turn will attract more businesses and so on.
This virtuous cycle, which economists call agglomeration, is responsible for nearly every piece of innovation in the modern economy, from the Covid-19 vaccine to the technology in our smartphones.
The energy transition must not be seen only as a virtuous pursuit or a fiscal burden, but as a golden opportunity to attract the industries of the future. Wales must learn from the commercial incentives of its neighbors but go a step further, embracing quality, depth, endurance, and the duality of “doing well and doing good”. The facts are simple.
These technologies need a lot of green power, and Wales has the natural assets to create it. We must use them, seize the first-mover advantage, and act while the opportunity is hot.
43.What was special about Costa Rica?
A.It has a lot of competitions. B.It has a clean road.
C.It is a global semiconductor hub D.It has a unique name.
44.From the text, what does the “case” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.AI could consume as much energy as the Netherlands by 2027.
B.AI can have a profitable future.
C.Data centers should be closed without AI.?
D.Data centers had to be near to users to reduce delay.
45.What is the author’s attitude toward Wales?
A.positive B.doubtful C.neutral D.negative
46.Which one is the best title of the passage?
A.What Wales can learn from Costa Rica?
B.Energy and environment
C.Can a semiconductor hub be created?
D.The green power and the technology

根据第四段中的“Before AI, data centers had to be close to users to minimize delay time. But with AI, this is no longer the case. (在人工智能出现之前,数据中心必须靠近用户,以最大限度地减少延迟时间。但有了人工智能,情况就不再是这样了。)”可知,“this”指代前文“数据中心必须靠近用户以减少延迟时间”这一情况,因此“case”在此处意为“数据中心必须靠近用户以减少延迟时间”。故选D项。
45.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“These technologies need a lot of green power, and Wales has the natural assets to create it. We must use them, seize the first-mover advantage, and act while the opportunity is hot. (这些技术需要大量绿色能源,而威尔士拥有生产绿色能源的自然资源。我们必须利用这些资源,抓住先发优势,趁热打铁。)”可知,作者认为威尔士具备发展相关产业的条件,鼓励其抓住机遇,态度是积极的。故选A项。
故选A项。
Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
What specifically can you do to increase learning when faced with stress at work?
Start internally. 47 When stress emerges, change the message you tell yourself from “this is a stressful work assignment/situation” to “this is a challenging but rewarding opportunity to learn.” Reframing stressful tasks as learning possibilities shifts your mindset and better prepares you to approach the task with an orientation toward growth and longer-term gains.
Work and learn with others. Instead of struggling with a stressful challenge solely in your own head, try to get input from others. Getting out and discussing a stressor with your peers and colleagues might reveal hidden insights, either from their experience or from the questions and perspectives they raise.
48 Alongside purely relaxing breaks — either short ones like meditating or longer ones like taking days off, consider recasting learning itself as a break from your routine tasks at work. This might seem like a mere mental rebranding, but if a learning activity allows you to divert from the type of effort you use in regular work activities (e.g., numeric thinking, interacting with clients), and if the activity also fits your real interests, it can refill you psychologically. 49 However, approaching it as a form of pause can make it more appealing and more likely to create positive, enjoyable experiences.
Embracing learning can be a more active way to cushion yourself from negative effects of stress at work. 50 Even without pressing problems, engaging in learning as a central feature of your work life will help you build personal resources and equip you to be resilient and prepared in navigating future stress at work.
A.Viewing learning as “more work” will make it less attractive in an already stressful situation.
B.Simply practice “buckle down and power through” to focus on getting the stressful work done.
C.Temporarily disconnect from work and get “work breaks” from the stressful environment.
D.At the same time, there is no need to wait for stress to arise before seeking learning opportunities.
E.Craft learning activities as a new form of “work break.”
F.Practice reframing stressful work challenges in your mind. This fear is beneficial, because it keeps you alive to breed another day.
【答案】47.F 48.E 49.A 50.D
47.根据本段小标题“Start internally.(从内在出发)”,以及空后“When stress emerges, change the message you tell yourself from “this is a stressful work assignment/situation” to “this is a challenging but rewarding opportunity to learn.” Reframing stressful tasks as learning possibilities...(当压力出现时,把你对自己说的话从“这是一项有压力的工作任务/情况”改成“这是一个有挑战性但值得的学习机会”。将有压力的任务重新定义为学习机会……)”可知,此空需点明“内在出发”的具体做法。F选项“Practice reframing stressful work challenges in your mind.(练习在脑海中重构有压力的工作挑战)”符合语境。故选F项。
根据下文“Alongside purely relaxing breaks — either short ones like meditating or longer ones like taking days off, consider recasting learning itself as a break from your routine tasks at work.(除了纯粹的放松休息——比如短暂的冥想,或是像休几天假这样稍长的休息——不妨考虑将学习本身重新定位为从日常工作任务中抽离的一种休息方式)”可知,本段围绕“把学习当作工作休息的新形式”展开。E选项“Craft learning activities as a new form of “work break.”(将学习活动打造成‘工作休息’的新形式)”为祈使句,适合作小标题。故选E项。
49.根据空前“if the activity also fits your real interests, it can refill you psychologically.(如果这项活动也符合你的真实兴趣,它就能在心理上为你补充能量)”以及空后“However, approaching it as a form of pause can make it more appealing...(然而,将其视为一种休息形式会让它更有吸引力……)” A选项“Viewing learning as “more work” will make it less attractive in an already stressful situation.(在本已充满压力的情况下,将学习视为“额外的工作”会让它变得不那么有吸引力)”符合语境。故选A项。
50.根据空前“Embracing learning can be a more active way to cushion yourself from negative effects of stress at work.(拥抱学习是缓解工作压力负面影响的更积极方式)”以及空后“Even without pressing problems, engaging in learning as a central feature of your work life will help you...(即使没有紧迫的问题,将学习作为工作生活的核心部分也会帮助你……)” D选项“At the same time, there is no need to wait for stress to arise before seeking learning opportunities.(同时,不必等到压力出现才去寻求学习机会)”中“At the same time”承接前文“压力下的学习”,“no need to wait for stress”则引出后文“无压力时的学习”,形成“压力时学+无压力时也学”的完整逻辑,符合语境。故选D项。
IV.Summary Writing
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Fiction Reading
For many people, nothing is more enjoyable than spending a whole afternoon reading a good novel. But are novels simply a pleasant way to pass the time, or could it be true that reading fiction actually benefits our lives?
One of the joys of fiction is that it can take us to places that our lives won’t. It can transport us to 17th-century France, or to war-torn Germany. It can take us to a future world in which artificial intelligence takes over and books are banned, or a fantasy world where people bail it out for food. Fiction can also introduce us to a whole range of people that we haven’t yet met. And this, according to Carrie Oates, a novelist and academic, is perhaps the real benefit of stories.
In one of Oates’ studies, participants were asked to read either a short story by Chekhov or a version of the story in documentary form. Those who were given the fictionalized version were found to be more likely to sympathize with the characters, thus going through greater changes in personality.
In another study, she showed participants photos of the eyes of people who were feeling and thinking different things. The people who read fiction were better able to interpret those thoughts and feelings than those who didn’t. Oates explains that when we read fiction, we enter into the minds of the characters. We think about why they behave in a certain way, and what they are likely to do next. Just as we might become more knowledgeable about psychology and astronomy if we read about psychology and astronomy, we get better at this kind of social thinking if we read fiction. This improves our understanding of the thoughts and feelings of those around us in real life.

(lie)
The beauty of traditional lanterns lies in the interaction between/combination of/mixture of/integration of candlelight and paper-cutting.
“传统灯笼之美”是the beauty of traditional lanterns,“在于”是lie in,句子描述客观事实,时态用一般现在时,主语the beauty of traditional lanterns是不可数名词,“……和……的交融”是the interaction between/combination of/mixture of/integration of,“烛光”是candlelight,“和”是and,“剪纸”是paper-cutting,故答案为The beauty of traditional lanterns lies in the interaction between/combination of/mixture of/integration of candlelight and paper-cutting.
I have just clicked (on) “Submit Application” by accident/mistake, and is it possible to withdraw it?
I have just clicked (on) “Submit Application” by accident/mistake;后半句表示“还有可能撤回吗?”,用“is it possible to do sth?”结构,根据提示词,“撤回”为withdraw,“它”(指代“申请”)为it作withdraw的宾语,故后半句译为is it possible to withdraw it?,其后两句之间为并列关系,用and连接两个分句。 I have just clicked (on) “Submit Application” by accident/mistake, and is it possible to withdraw it?
(match)
The two finalists matched each other in either endurance or speed. /The two players in the final were evenly matched in either endurance or speed. /Both of the finalists were evenly matched in terms of durability and speed.
根据汉语提示,句子表述过去事实,故使用一般过去时;表示“两名决赛选手”用the two finalists/the two players in the final/both of the finalists;表示“旗鼓相当”用match each other/be evenly matched;表示“无论在耐力上还是速度上”用in either endurance or speed/ in terms of durability and speed。 The two finalists matched each other in either endurance or speed./The two players in the final were evenly matched in either endurance or speed. /Both of the finalists are evenly matched in terms of durability and speed.

Best regards,
Li Hua

1. M: Excuse me, can you give me the balance on my account?
W: Sure. Tell me your account number.
Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place? (B)
2. M: Please take a seat, Miss Simmons. Now you are applying for a job as a medical lab technician. What’s your experience in this kind of work?
W: Well, I’ve been working as a receptionist in a doctor’s clinic for the past three years.
Q: What’s the probable relationship between the two speakers?(A)

Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one conversation. You will be asked three questions on each of the passages and four questions for the conversation. The passages and conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
On this graduation ceremony I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to you all. Well done, everyone. I’ve got three tips to share with you, hoping to make a direction for the future life after your graduation from college.
Tip one: There are few things that get you over your own crop more than working hard. Do you want to know how to work hard? It’s not difficult. All you have to do is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you. Learn how the project you are working on fits into the big picture. Learn how you fit in. When you truly understand how the big picture works, you start being able to expect changes and change your behavior.
Tip two: Be kind to everyone. I can’t stress this enough, but it remains true. Kindness will pay back invaluable rewards. Don’t you believe me? I’m sure that at some point you’ll have the opportunity to work for someone who used to be your assistant, or hire someone who used to be your boss.
Tip three: Stay interested. Is there anything you can’t stop thinking about? Keep doing it. Interest is the better part of success. You will be great at the things that you are willing to do.
Remember that you have time to figure out what you want to do. You have time to try again. Just have courage to do it so long as you’re willing to work hard.
Questions:
11. Whom is the speech aimed at? (B)
12. Why does the speaker give the speech? (C)
13. Which of the following is NOT a tip the speaker share? (C)
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot … you can travel fast or slow. The movement of your feet gets you where you need to go. But it also gets you so much more! Walking is a basic, simple exercise that’s suitable for almost everyone.
Walking helps you in many ways. First it makes you heart stronger. Studies show regular walking reduces your chance of heart disease. Walking quickly for 30 minutes a day also helps control high blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of developing some cancers, too.
Want to lose weight? You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat. Walking is the easiest way. As people age, their brains don’t work as well. One in 14 people over 65 suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape.
Walking helps your mental health, too. Putting one foot in front of the other isn’t difficult. You don’t have to think about it, so you can concentrate on other things.
You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking near your house, park a distance away and walk. Instead of taking the elevator, walk. Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel.
Questions:
14. What’s the topic of the passage? (A)
15. Why is walking good for people’s mental health? (D)
16. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about walking in the passage? (D)
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
W: Hi, Bryan. How are you doing? You look tired.
M: Oh, I’m a little burned out. I’ve been surfing the Net for the last few hours.
W: Were you doing schoolwork, or was it just for pleasure.
M: Well, I wanted to get some information on South America for a project I have, but I found a really interesting chat site with people from there and started chatting.
W: Well, did you get the information you needed?
M: Yes, but then we spent lots of time chatting about other interests.
W: I see. The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I have finished, I have lot of more than I started off looking for.
M: I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless.
W: Yes, there is that, and also, I often find the same site over and over again in a search. That definitely wastes lots of my time.
M: And of course, there are sites that offer little to no relative information on the topic you are searching for. In my search today, I found quite a few sites that were nothing more than old event calendars.
W: Well, I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone.
M: I agree. With all the time I spend on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read though what I got on the Internet and start working on my subjects.
W: Okay. Good luck. It’s funny we had this chat, as I was just on my way home to surf the Net myself.
M: Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight.
Questions:
17. Why does the man look tired? (C)
18. Why did the man surf the Internet? (D)
19. What’s the woman’s opinion about surfing the Internet? (C)
20. What does the man NOT like about the Internet? (B)

Section A
Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once.

That has prompted businesses to seek solutions. Some companies have begun offering employees greater 19 in the government has launched a campaign titled “Premium Friday,” which advocates for early departure every last Friday of the month.
Microsoft, for its part, has announced its intention to execute another large-scale collaboration in Japan late this year to tackle employees with devising innovative strategies to enhance work-life balance and operational efficiency. Furthermore, it also hopes other enterprises can join the 20 .

Section B

A.In a university lecture. B.In a physics textbook.
C.In a science magazine. D.In an advertisement.
