Strangest Festivals around the World
Through the years, people have found many ways to celebrate important occasions in their lives. If you’re looking for an interesting and off-the-beaten-path tourist site, here are some most wonderful and unusual festivals from around the world.
Battle of the Orange, Ivrea, Italy
Each year in February, a battle takes place in this Italian town among thousands of tourists who throw oranges at each other during a 30-minute fight. The aim is to try and knock down other people by attacking them with oranges so that they cannot stand any longer.
Underwater Music Festival, Florida, America
Rather than being held at a typical concert hall the Underwater Music Festival takes place on the seabed in July. Aiming to protect the sea lives, this unique custom features musicians playing music below water level. 100 feet deep in clear water, talented musicians wear diving equipment, performing free concerts for sea creatures and humans alike.
Rayne Frog (青蛙) Festival, Louisiana, America
The Rayne Frog Festival is held every fall in Rayne, Louisiana. The festival features all things frog: frog races, frog jumping, and the selection of the Frog Derby Queen. Besides music performance, it also holds a variety of frog-themed runs, fairs and other activities. If you are into frogs, there’s no other place you’d rather be in mid-November.
Night of the Radishes (萝卜), Oaxaca, Mexico
Night of the Radishes is a celebration that takes place every December 23rd in Oaxaca, Mexico. It features all kinds of radish sculptures (雕塑). The tradition began when local radish growers began carving their produce in order to attract customers. But radishes are just radishes after all, and the sculptures don’t last.

Harper Lee(1926 - 2016)was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird(published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of U. S. readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the U. S. schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she was working on another story.
In 2015,a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy(隐私)in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.

27. What can best describe Harper Lee?

If you’re planning to go on a diet, or if you’re suffering from serious conditions like diabetes (糖尿病), knowing exactly what and how much you’re eating is essential. In this day and age, we have calorie and nutrition calculators even on our smartphones, but they act only as guides, whereas a famous company’s revolutionary new device, CaloRieco, actually analyzes the food on your plate and provides accurate information in just a few seconds.
You’ve probably used calorie calculators before, and you know that they only offer general information. For example, a calculator will tell you the average number of calories in a hamburger, but it can’t tell you exactly how many calories are in the hamburger. The same goes for nutrients like protein or fat. And this is what makes the new CaloRieco so special.
Displayed at a recent tech show, CaloRieco is a high-tech device that uses light reflection technology to determine the nutritional value of almost any food and also provide accurate calorie estimates. All you have to do is put your plate in the box-shaped device and wait between 10 and 20 seconds for it to analyze all the food.
Once it finishes analyzing the various ingredients in your meal, CaloRieco will display the number of calories, as well as the nutritional content on an LED display. According to the company, the device is able to recognize the vast majority of foods, except soups and very dark dishes.
CaloRieco can also be connected to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your handheld device, so you can access it whenever you need.
The spokesman for the company said that its outstanding invention is aimed at dieters and diabetes sufferers, both of whom make up a fairly large market. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at the show is just a prototype (样品) which needs to be improved. It’s scheduled to hit the market sometime in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery.
28. What is the advantage of CaloRieco?
A. It uses light reflection technology.
B. It offers average figures of food.
C. It is a high-tech device working as a guide.
D. It can present the exact number of calories in food.
29. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The smartphone. B. The app. C. The data. D. The food.
30. According to the text, what can we know about CaloRieco?
A. It needs a long time to analyze the food.
B. It can display the food data on the smartphone directly.
C. It can count the calories of all kinds of foods on your plate.
D. It hasn’t been available for customers in the market.
31. What can we infer about CaloRieco?
A. It’s perfect. B. It’s promising. C. It’s costly. D. It’s portable.
D
Many people believe that working to the maximum is the secret to success, but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job.
In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all. High levels of knowledge can make people too attached to traditional ways of viewing problems across fields the arts, sciences, and politics. High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist.
How long we stay on the clock and how we spend that time are under careful examination in many workplaces. The young banker who eats lunch at his desk is probably seen as a go-getter, while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office. “People from cultures that value relationships more than ours does are shocked by the thought of eating alone in front of a computer”, says Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Social interaction has been shown to lift mood(情绪) and get people thinking in new directions and in ways that could help improve any post-lunch effort.
Markman also promotes off-task time. “Part of being a good thinker is experiencing things that are seemingly unrelated to what you are working on at the moment but give you fresh ideas about your work,” he says. “Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity. So, when people do things to increase their life satisfaction, they also make themselves more effective at work.”
32. What does Ellen Langer’s study show?
A. It is worthwhile to be a perfectionist B. Translation makes people knowledgeable.
C Simpler jobs require greater caution. D. Moderate effort produces the best result.
33. The underlined word “go-getter” in paragraph 3 refers to someone Who_______.
A. is good at handling pressure B. works hard to become successful
C. a has a natural talent for his job. D. gets on well with his co-workers
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. A good thinker is able to inspire other people.
B. Experience unrelated to your job is useless.
C. A cheerful mood helps make a creative mind.
D. Focusing on what you do raises productivity.
35. What does the text seem to advocate?
A. Middle-of-the-road work habits. B. Balance between work and family.
C. Long-standing cultural traditions. D. Harmony in the work environment.

In China, poetry is an important part of the curriculum and, with recent changes announced by the Ministry of Education, the number of poems students will have to memorise and recite is being increased from fourteen to seventy-two. Now, before you gasp in horror, let’s think about the reasons why studying so many poems, especially ancient poems, is important. First of all, poetry is an essential part of traditional Chinese culture. ____36____ It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and emotions that are common to everyone but which we may be unable to express — the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger. ____37____
____38____ In a few short lines, even something commonplace can become beautiful. Here is a poem called “Fog” by Carl Sandburg: The fog comes/on little cat feet...on silent haunches/and then moves on. Yes, fog does move smoothly, silently and mysteriously like a cat, and Sandburg captures that feeling and image, and makes it beautiful.
____39____ After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poetry, especially Western poetry, was actually spoken before it was written. Take Homer’s Iliad for example. The story was apparently told for hundreds of years in palaces and on street corners before Homer wrote it down. The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” And poems are very concise — there is not a wasted word. ____40____
A. Poetry is difficult to recite.
B. Poems can also express beauty.
C. Few people read it for pleasure.
D. Of course, to really appreciate poetry, it has to be read aloud.
E. You are lucky that you now have seventy-two poems to learn!
F. It is a pathway to understanding your history and your society.
G. A good poem can put those emotions into words and bring us self-understanding.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
I'm an English self-learner. English is not my first language. Today I’m an English teacher. I like to voice that failures are not disasters. Have faith, keep moving on and never give up. You will see your hard work pay off.
I was a slow learner when I was little. Before five, I couldn't even speak in full sentences like most other children. I seldom interacted with others. I neither cried nor went, nor got angry. My extreme quietness made my parents wonder if I was mentally slow. But they were not sure. Actually, I have to admit that my memories of my early childhood are quite uncertain.
When I was in elementary school, I learned very slowly and was as quiet as a doll. While my teacher was teaching, my mind often would wander outside of the classroom to the playground. The learning problems and inactive personality remained with me until I was in Grade 5. As a fifth grader, I finally started interacting with my classmates. That was the first time in my memory that I had some friends. Most amazingly, from that time on, I became talkative, laughing and playing like any normal child.
After heading full speed for my junior education, my learning situation got stuck in the mud again. In my country, students were arranged into different levels of classes based on their IQ test scores. For example, students with higher IQ scores were placed in the “outstanding class”; average ones joined the “intermediate class”, and slower students were destined for the “bottom class”. I was placed in the “bottom class” as a result of my below average IQ score. Most of my teachers taught us using easy and slow methods because they considered us unable to learn much. Despite that, I never lost faith that I might one day succeed. As if to prove that when God closes a door, he will definitely open up a big window, a miracle occurred. That's when I discovered a strong passion for English.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答,
Paragraph 1: At the age of 13, I found myself deeply interested in English.

Paragraph 2: That way, I could further expand my vocabulary.

You can't miss the huge bright blue screen machine. When IT comes into the car park, IT takes an hour to change IT into a comfortable air condition. A, D, C. Cinema, it's amazing. I really admire the screen machines driver. Of course, he shows the movies, and there is always another person selling tickets. The salt in the sea air isn't good for the trucks, motors, so they also need a mechanic. We can now also book in advance on the screen machine website, which makes IT even more convenient, and that's the way most people choose. No, it's an amazing service.
Rather than being held at a typical concert hall, the Underwater Music Festival takes place on the seabed in July.

The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.

【答案】28. D 29. C 30. D 31. B
【解析】

The same goes for nutrients like protein or fat. And this is what makes the new CaloRieco so special.(例如,计算器会告诉你一个汉堡包的平均卡路里数,但它不能告诉你汉堡包到底有多少卡路里。蛋白质或脂肪等营养物质也是如此。这就是新CaloRieco的特别之处。)”可知,该公司这款设备的优势是能给出食物热量的准确数值。故选D。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“CaloRieco can also be connected to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your handheld device(CaloRieco也可以通过一个应用程序连接到你的智能手机上,并将所有关于分析食物的数据发送到你的手持设备上)”和“whenever you need(每当你需要的时候)”可知,it指代的是前面的数据,故选C。

C. Simpler jobs require greater caution.
B Experience unrelated to your job is useless.
C. A cheerful mood helps make a creative mind.
D. Focusing on what you do raises productivity.
35. What does the text seem to advocate?
A. Middle-of-the-road work habits. B. Balance between work and family.
C. Long-standing cultural traditions. D. Harmony in the work environment.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. A

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Dear Mr Principal,
Our class has studied some knowledge about first aid. We are all interested in it and feel that being able to give first aid when needed can make a difference before proper medical treatment is given.
Therefore, we suggest that courses on first aid should be offered in our school. Posters about the treatment for different injuries can be put up in every corner of our campus. What’s more, our school can organize rescue drills to provide a stage for students to practice and gain experience in first aid.
I believe having knowledge of first aid is of vital importance. I would appreciate it if you could take our suggestions into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答,
Paragraph 1: At the age of 13, I found myself deeply interested in English.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: That way, I could further expand my vocabulary.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
At the age of 13, I found myself deeply interested in English. It was the movie called Roman Holiday that attracted my attention. From then on, I watched English movies from time to time. While watching, I followed the pronunciation, stress and intonation of speakers, which was my great pleasure. I also tried to communicate with my teachers and classmates in English. Even if they would make fun of me, I didn’t mind. To my surprise, I was transferred from the bottom class to the top due to my progress, which was a miracle. To enlarge my vocabulary, I read as many stories and articles as possible.
That way, I could further expand my vocabulary. I continued to self-learn English step by step. I even tried to write English diaries and rewrite some famous stories, one of which was published in our school newspaper. With these achievements, I had more faith in myself. Therefore, English was given priority when I chose my major at university. Wandering in the ocean of English, appreciating different cultures, I couldn’t be happier more. After graduating from college, I was determined to be an English teacher to share my experience in learning English to help more students. My story proves that everyone has the ability to learn English. Success has less to do with IQ, but more to do with hard work and strong passion.
