Huang Xuhua, a famous Chinese submarine (潜艇) designer, is known for his hard work, creativity and love for his country. His journey from a young boy in a small village to a top scientist in China is truly inspiring.
Huang Xuhua was born in a small village in Guangdong Province. When he was very young, China was going through many changes. Huang was always curious about the ocean and how things worked. He loved reading books and trying small experiments. Huang was especially good at math and physics. The two subjects helped him build a strong foundation for his future career. When he grew older, he wanted to learn medicine at first under the influence of his parents who were both doctors in his hometown. However, to save China, Huang got into one of China’s best universities to study Naval Architecture. His university life was not easy, but Huang never gave up. He graduated with excellent grades in the end.
After graduation, Huang joined a research institute (机构) and focused on submarine design. There he faced many challenges, but he always kept strong-willed and put his shoulder to the wheel with other workmates. His efforts paid off in the end. China’s first nuclear-powered submarine was independently developed and built without any help of other countries. This project was not only a big step in technology but also the key to guarding China’s safety. Huang and his team worked day and night, even when things seemed impossible. His dream and love for our country kept him going on.
Huang’s work has earned him many awards, including the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, one of China’s highest honors. Although Huang achieved success, he remains humble (谦虚的). He often tells young people to stay curious, work hard, and never give up.

C
Do you often compare yourself with other people? Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read, it’s easy to compare yourself with someone else. It’s a natural behaviour that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more. However, it’s not always helpful and you can find yourself falling into a comparison trap (对比陷阱).
Comparison can make us feel good and bad about ourselves. “Comparing up” means seeing someone is better than you and using that to encourage yourself to aim higher and try harder. However, sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and undermine your confidence. “Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you. This might make you feel you’re doing well, but it can also stop you wanting to improve.
How do you escape (逃离) comparison trap? Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths (优势) rather than compare themselves to you. Find ones that make you laugh or show you lovely places instead. Finally, pay attention to your own achievements and how you can improve. The best person you can compete with is yourself.
Let’s make positive comparisons. This means you value your own achievements and not someone else’s. Celebrate progress instead of the final result. It doesn’t matter if someone is better or faster than you; it’s important how hard you try. Set some goals and pay attention to your progress. Instead of saying “I can’t do it”, say “I can’t do it yet”.
8. What is the purpose of comparing yourself with others according to the text?
A. To knock your confidence. B. To learn from each other and achieve more.
C. To make others feel bad about themselves. D. To show off your achievements to others.
9. Which word is close to the underlined word “undermine” in meaning?
A. Add. B. Build. C. Weaken. D. Protect
10. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. Competing with yourself is not necessary.
B. Your feelings always depend on other people.
C. We can follow the ways to escape comparison trap.
D. We should always compare ourselves with others.
11. What is the key to making positive comparisons?
A. Celebrating your progress. B. Valuing others’ achievements.
C. Trying to be better than others. D. Ignoring your own efforts.
D
Eating habits can tell us a lot about who we are. Let’s look at some popular eating styles and what they reveal about our personalities.
The Slow Eater
Eating slowly may be one of the most annoying (烦人的) things if you’re the person that has already finished eating and is waiting for someone else. However, it seems that they don’t want to eat up their food quickly and they would like to enjoy every moment in their lives. They also follow this style when they are working.
The Fast Eater
Those of you who finish your food in 5 minutes must be really good at doing a few things at the same time. Fast eaters always finish their work on time and usually make it a day or two before it ends. They are also very competitive, which means that they will miss some very important moments in their own lives. They can be so busy that they forget to take care of themselves.
The Adventurer
If every time you go to a restaurant and try to find the most special dish then you fall into this kind of eater. People who do this usually like to take risks (冒险) and are not afraid they will not be successful. They will even say “yes” to the craziest idea, wanting to try new things. Nobody ever thinks they are dull. However, they should be careful not to pressure (施加压力) others to be as adventurous as they are, since not everyone is fit for taking risks.
The Picky Eater
It’s not usual for a picky eater to order at a restaurant without asking any questions. These people are very safe in their comfort zone (舒适区) and are very afraid to take one more step to do something that they don’t know. They only take jobs that they know well. However, they are very good learners and are not afraid to ask questions and learn things they don’t know.
12. No matter how busy Kate is, she will take some time to have a nice meal. She may be a(n) ________.
A. slow eater B. fast eater C. adventurer D. picky eater
13. Which of the following is TRUE about the adventurers?
A. They would like to order the most delicious dish at a restaurant.
B. They are interesting, brave but careless.
C. They are afraid that they will not be successful.
D. They want to get out of their comfort zone.
14. From the passage, we learn that ________.
A. slower eaters are patient but annoying
B. fast eaters usually work with high efficiency (效率)
C. picky eaters are good at learning and trying something new
D. the adventurer is the best among the four kinds of eaters

Instead of saying “I can’t do it”, say “I can’t do it yet”.

If every time you go to a restaurant and try to find the most special dish, then you fall into this kind of eater.
However they are very good learners and are not afraid to ask questions and learn things they don’t know.
