B When Bella Lin was 12 years old, she noticed that her guinea pigs (豚鼠) seemed unhappy in their small cage with “prison-like bars”, Lin told the CNBC Make It website. Focusing on finding an alternative to traditional cages for her pets, the now 17-year-old from Mountain View, US, began her designs. Lin experimented with multiple designs and used around $2,000 from her savings to start her side business, Guinea Loft, on Amazon in November 2022. It made a big difference and sold nearly 11,000 cages and brought in more than $410,000 in 2023, according to CNBC Make It. Initially Lin informed her father of her desire to develop an improved cage. Her father had relations with a family-owned factory in China through a previous client, and he reached out to them. Traditional guinea pig cages typically consist of bars, roofs, and either tarp (防水布) or plastic bottoms, making them hard to clean and often smell bad. Lin’s initial glass, open-floor cages offered more visibility and mobility, with a two-layered bottom. This design allows for the easy removal of soiled bedding by pushing it into a removable plastic tray (托盘). However, due to high shipping costs, the glass material was impractical, and the open floor caused problems for her smaller guinea pigs, as their feet would get stuck. Lin and her six-person team in China devoted late nights to researching and testing products. Her team handled the sourcing, manufacturing, packaging and photography of the products. In the end, they chose acrylic, instead of glass, and crafted replaceable bottoms, as Lin described it. The bottoms are easy to throw out, which is good for business: Once customers run out of the bottoms, they have to visit Lin’s Amazon store again to restock. “Witnessing the practical effects of Guinea Loft cages through customer reviews and emails is empowering,” Lin said. “As someone who once placed great emphasis on academic recognition, the success of my side business has boosted my confidence in exploring life beyond high school.” 4. What inspired Lin to design a new cage for guinea pigs? A. The huge profits in her business. B. Their bad living conditions. C. Her unpleasant experience at school. D. Her desire to replace old cages. 5. What is a major advantage of Lin’s new cage? A. It is waterproof. B. It lasts long. C. It is easy to clean. D. It smells nice. 6. How does Lin sound in the last paragraph? A. Humorous. B. Concerned. C. Encouraged. D. Curious. 7. What may be a suitable title for the text? A. Inventing for Our Pets B. Running a Side Business C. Bella Lin’s Academic Achievements D. The Application of Guinea Pig Cages C Elephants have long been known for their intelligence and memory. A recent German study on two female Asian elephants, Bibi and Panya, provides scientific evidence that they can recognize and remember people they’ve bonded with after many years of separation. Bibi and Panya once lived at the Berlin Zoo, forming close bonds with their human caregivers. Thirteen years ago, they were moved to Serengeti Park in Germany, which made them ideal subjects to test elephants’ ability to recall individuals. Researchers designed the study to check if Bibi and Panya could tell their former caregivers from strangers. They collected smell stimuli (刺激物) by having the former zookeepers wear T-shirts for eight hours and then presented these along with T-shirts worn by strangers to the elephants. Visual and auditory cues like photographs and voice recordings of the keepers and unfamiliar individuals were also included. The research team observed and recorded the elephants’ reactions, mainly measuring how often and how long they reached out their trunks toward the various stimuli. The sense of smell is crucial to elephants, so the team thought olfactory (嗅觉的) cues might be key to recognition. Both elephants showed a clear preference for the T-shirts worn by their former caregivers. They reached out their trunks more often and for longer periods toward the familiar smells than the shirts of unknown individuals. This indicates that the elephants recognized the odor of their past caregivers even after 13 years. However, the elephants didn’t react as strongly to the photographs or voice recordings. There was no significant difference in their responses to familiar and unfamiliar faces or voices. This suggests that smell plays a more important role in human recognition for elephants than sight or sound in this study. These findings are very important for zoos and wildlife shelters. They show the deep bond elephants can form with caregivers. Continuous care strengthens trust and familiarity, which seems to be deeply remembered by elephants. Thus, frequent changes — such as frequently switching caregivers — might disturb the elephant’s sense of security, leading to stress-related behaviors or health issues. Zoos and conservation programs should consider elephants’ emotional and cognitive (认知) needs for more moral practices. 8. What made Bibi and Panya ideal subjects to test elephants’ ability to recall individuals? A. Their close bonds. B. The long separation. C. Their strong memory. D. The frequent moves. 9. What did the researchers do in the study? A. They analyzed elephants’ smell. B. They explained a difficult concept. C. They changed elephants’ behaviour. D. They presented different T-shirts. 10. What does the underlined word “odor” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Smell. B. Voice. C. Figure. D. Face. 11 What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Elephants benefit a lot from wildlife shelters. B. Zoos should prioritize elephants’ physical needs. C. Continuous care is crucial for elephants’ well-being. D. Psychological health of elephants is often ignored. D Postmates, an American delivery company, has built a robot, called Serve, which was designed to make short-distance deliveries in cities. To know what’s going on, Serve has a laser radar (激光雷达) sensor on top, in which spinning lasers let it detect objects around it and know how far away they are. Also, behind each artificial eye is a camera, with six more imaging devices spread around the robot. Inside it is another sensor that allows Postmates to know if there is a package in there. “One of our key decisions early on was to rely heavily on the robot’s ability to see the environment,” says Ali Kashani, the vice president for robotics at Postmates. Since the sidewalk is “a very chaotic environment”, he points out, the robot needs to be able to take it all in and figure out what to do. This robot, and many like it, also must be able to signal their intentions to the pedestrians. For that, it has a number of approaches. One is using its eyes; another is a colorful light ring that goes around the top. “When it wants to make way for a pedestrian, it will use its eyes and look down,” he explains. It can also use the lights on the top as a turn signal, which is obvious, and also look left and right when it’s turning left and right. “Using eye movements and other silent signals is a good idea,” says Aaron Steinfeld, a professor of human-robot interaction. Serve is intended for sidewalks and Steinfeld says that environment is challenging. People usually walk fast while staring at a smartphone. For a robot, that’s a lot. “We have active research on robot moving socially around walking people,” he says. “And it’s really tricky to do this well.” Postmates plans to use Serve in Los Angeles at first, and that its intended task is to move small objects over short distances. The robot can travel 30 miles on one charge and is able to carry 50 pounds. 12. What is the specific function of the additional sensor that Serve has inside its body? A. To monitor package condition. B. To detect if a package is inside. C. To measure package weight. D. To detect movement around. 13. According to the text, how does Serve primarily detect and understand its environment? A. By heavily relying on its ability to see. B. Through its advanced hearing sensors. C. By following pre-programmed routes only. D. By communicating directly with pedestrians. 14 What’s the major challenge for robots on sidewalks mentioned by Professor Aaron Steinfeld? A. The weight of the packages they have to carry. B. The limited range of 30 miles on a single charge. C. The behavior of people walking fast while looking at their phones. D. The inability of sensors to work in rainy weather. 15. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To introduce Postmates’ robot Serve and its key features. B. To describe the challenges robots face when operating on urban sidewalks. C. To explain the technical specifications of Postmates’ delivery robot Serve. D. To discuss the importance of human-robot interaction in technology development. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Tree climbing is dead. What was once a part of childhood is now disappearing. We might want to blame it on the fact that childhood has headed indoors or on parents’ and teachers’ safety concerns. ____16____. One quarter of kids have never climbed a tree. Many schools ban the activity, fearful of the risk of injury to children. Many parks, gardens, zoos, communities and institutions will hand you a fine if you’re caught climbing a tree. Why should we care about tree climbing? Isn’t it, after all, a risky activity that will end up with a visit to the ER or worse? ____17____. In 2016, researchers from the University of Phoenix surveyed 1,600 parents who let their children climb trees. Of the participants that responded to the survey question, 94.84% reported that their child scraped (擦伤) a knee, elbow, or skin as a result of climbing a tree, and less than 2% reported a broken bone. ____18____, but he/she can just as easily fall off the playground monkey bars, a bunk bed, or a bike — all of which are statistically more dangerous to your child than a tree. And here’s the best news. ____19____. The same University of Phoenix researchers found that parents of tree-climbing kids felt that climbing trees encouraged adventure, creativity, and inspiration in their kids. These parents reported that tree climbing improved their child’s problem-solving skills and a sense of self-efficacy (自我效能) and risk negotiation. And they cited many physical benefits, such as increased strength, flexibility, and better spatial awareness. One survey respondent wrote that tree climbing teaches her son to trust and believe in his whole body’s abilities. ____20____, such as building confidence, helping each other, and freedom, sharing, peace, empowering, social activity and self-awareness, etc. A. Your child could suffer a physical injury B. Actually, the statistics tell a different story C. Parents also allow tree climbing for emotional benefits D. The truth is that kids just don’t climb trees anymore E. They can make informed decisions about the risks that they take F. Climbing trees and falling out of them are both part of growing up G. Climbing trees is great for your child physically and emotionally 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15 小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 My daughter Anna has always been called “Number 23.” Every time the school ____21____ exam results, Anna always ends up in 23rd position among 50 pupils. My classmates called me“Mr. Champion(冠军)”. One day, there was a sports meeting at my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in all the races: the 400m, 200m, and 100m. A large number of people gathered to watch. The crowd was eager to see the running races because they were the most exciting events. When the 400m race started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first and received a big round of applause(掌声). Although it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of the world. In the 200m race, I ran at full speed and finished first once again. The crowd gave me thunderous applause. I jumped all over the place and even didn’t think it was necessary to shake hands with other racers. Then came the 100m race. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys gave up except one: a boy named Matt, who looked a little clumsy(笨拙的) but was a determined racer. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking if he would like to give up too. Wild with joy, I thought I would win the championship without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt decided to finish the race. I sniffed(嗤之以鼻), “It’s a waste of time. I’m sure he doesn’t even know where the finish line is.” The race between the two of us began. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran toward the finish line. Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before reaching the finish line, I was expecting to receive applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm(抽筋). 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I fell hard to the ground. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With his help, I slowly stood up. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 濮阳外国语学校2023级高三上学期第二次质量检测英语试题 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分)(略) 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A 【1~3题答案】 【答案】1. I can’t wait to share with you my amazing experience with my family during the National Day holiday, where AI brought so much convenience to travel. For example, when buying tickets for scenic spots, I used mobile payment directly, which saved me from the trouble of carrying cash or waiting in long lines. Also, face recognition technology allowed us to enter attractions quickly, saving us a lot of time and trouble. It was super efficient! These AI applications made my trip much smoother and more enjoyable. I really felt how technology is changing our lives for the better, making travel easier and more fun. I sincerely invite you to come to China and experience this convenient travel with AI by yourself. I’m sure you’ll love it! Looking forward to your reply.(135) Yours, Li Hua Dear Peter, How are you doing? Just as planned my family went on a week-long tour during the National Day holiday. Here I’d like to share with you what we experienced. When traveling, we were amazed at the changes and convenience brought by AI. First of all, wherever and whenever we went, we could use the mobile payment, including buying admission tickets. More interestingly, we no longer had to get into tourist attractions with the ID card. We could do it through a face recognition app now, which really saved time so that we didn’t have to wait in a queue. What an amazing experience I do hope you can come to China and experience all of this when you have spare time. Looking forward to your arrival.(123) Yours, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 I fell hard to the ground. I tried to stand up, but there was a sharp pain in my leg. My dream of winning for the third time was over. The crowd’s cheers changed into shocked gasps. I felt my face burn with shame and frustration. Just moments ago, I was about to win; now I was lying helpless on the track, unable to move. To my surprise, Matt didn’t rush past. Instead, he stopped beside me with concern. “Are you okay? Let me help you.” He said as he reached out his hand. With his help, I slowly stood up. Leaning on his shoulder, I hopped painfully toward the finish line. My heart was filled with a mixture of gratitude and regret. The audience began to clap—not for a winner, but for two boys who supported each other and crossed the finish line together. That day, I realized that the heart of a true champion doesn’t lie in winning, but in kindness and sportsmanship. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
