【原文】My mom’s a wonderful woman. She was born in Texas in 1968 and worked as a Spanish teacher until 2005. Then two years later, with my father’s help, she built a home for children in Honduras. She devoted herself to caring for the poor, both physically and emotionally. However, from 2020, everything was different. My mom was found with Alzheimer’s disease. But luckily, she doesn’t have Parkinson’s disease or any blood pressure disorders, which are common diseases for the elderly. Right now, my mom lives in a special care center that meets the needs of residents who suffer from such medical conditions. Several times a week, a woman comes to bathe her. They often offer activities at the center, and these include singing, exercise, and even short trips to the local area. Although my mom isn’t able to participate in these as she did in the past, she still enjoys the simple things: holding hands, watching TV shows and taking short walks outside. I used to talk about everything with my mom. But now, my conversations with my mom are always short, like last week ...
第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Four Inventions from Women
Though it wasn’t always easy to get patents or the credit, women are responsible for many items we use today. Below are some of them.
A Solar House
In 1947, Mária Telkes, together with Eleanor Raymond, invented the world’s first modern residence heated with solar energy. The house was called Dover Sun House, built in Dover, Massachusetts, in 1948. She also invented other devices capable of storing energy captured from sunlight, and her remarkable achievements made a difference to current solar industry.
A Computer Term
Grace Hopper programmed for the earliest computer machines. Interestingly, Hopper’s first major invention in the field of software design was the creation of a famous computer term, “bug”. In 1947, she found a small moth in the Mark II computer, and it was this little bug that was “jamming (卡住)” the machine, Hopper jokingly referred to “failing to work” as a “bug”, a strange term that has since developed into a computer industry term.
Dish Washing Machine
Along with another engineer, Josephine Cochrane invented the first hand-powered dish-washer. Patented in 1886, the first dish washing machine combined high water pressure, a wheel, a boiler, and a wire framework like the ones still used for dish drying. As its inventor, Josephine Cochrane never used dishwasher herself, but it made others’ life easier.
Home Security System
You might be surprised to discover that the first home security system was actually invented by Marie Van Brittan Brown in 1966. Alongside her husband, she created a system containing a sliding camera, a two-way microphone, TV monitors. There was also an emergency button with which the police could be contacted in case of emergencies, and a remote control used to unlock doors.
21. Which of the following was created by a woman alone?
A. The solar house. B. The computer term.
C. The home security system. D. The dish washing machine.
22. What powered Josephine Cochrane’s dish washing machine?
A. Solar energy. B. Electricity.
C. Air pressure. D. Manpower.
23. How can we call the police when using the first home security system?
A. By turning to a remote control.
B. By using a new two-way microphone.
C. By pressing on the emergency button.
D. By calling for help into sliding camera.

Online food deliveries have seen a major boom in recent years. One company that has benefited from online deliveries is London-based Deliveroo, which is now the biggest food delivery company in the United Kingdom.
Deliveroo was launched in 2013 by William Shu and Greg Orlowski and has found great success in less than 10 years of being in the industry. The company employs powerful technology which cuts delivery time by 20% and has also partnered with thousands of restaurants in its multiple locations. KFC, PizzaExpress and Five Guys are just some of the 140,000 Deliveroo partner restaurants around the world.
The company regularly improves its services to better serve the needs of both customers and restaurants. In 2017, it launched “Deliveroo Editions” which is a feature that uses technology to easily connect users with new restaurants as well as popular food chains. The company also sells gift cards through its restaurant partners with each card valuing between £20 and £100. By expanding to other markets, Deliveroo has seen income increase every year.
The future is bright for online food delivery companies even after the world moves on from the COVID-19 pandemic. Convenience and accessibility have always been the main reasons why these delivery companies have achieved massive success. Deliveroo also learned to adapt, constantly incorporating new features such as digital payment options, and grocery services in the hope of achieving long-term development.
Deliveroo operates in 15 other locations in the world including Los Angeles, Paris and Singapore. Despite Deliveroo’s massive success, the Deliveroo CEO has acknowledged that there’s still “a lot more work to be done” and also added that the company has plans to “attract a whole new set of customers”.
24. What can we learn about Deliveroo?

In July 2021, astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) planted pepper seeds as part of an experiment to test which plants could be successfully grown in space. The peppers were harvested four months later, and the team celebrated with a party and taste test.
For astronauts living mostly off prepackaged foods for months at a time on the ISS, fresh and flavourful produce is welcomed. With long missions to the Moon and Mars in focus, NASA is working to find sustainable ways for astronauts to enjoy fresh foods, which will add key nutrients to their diets and improve their state of mind.
Astronauts have grown radishes, zinnias and a variety of lettuces on board the ISS before, but this is the first time they grew peppers, which posed a new challenge, reports Elizabeth Howell for Space. com.
Biologists at the Kennedy Space Centre spent two years picking the perfect pepper. They wanted to try peppers because they’re a great source of vitamins and nutrients, and they can be eaten raw or cooked. Plus, peppers are fairly low maintenance to grow.
In June, a carrier delivered supplies to the ISS along with a package of 48 pepper seeds. Astronauts on board planted the seeds in a microwave oven-sized growing container. The conditions in it—such as lighting, watering and air circulation—were controlled by a crew based at the Kennedy Space Centre. On board, the astronauts collected data and offered feedback on the flavour of the peppers.
“This is important because the food astronauts eat needs to be as good as the rest of their equipment,” LaShelle Spencer, a plant scientist at NASA, said over the summer. “To successfully send people to Mars and bring them back to Earth, we will not only require the most nutritious foods, but the best tasting ones as well.”
28. Why did astronauts attempt to plant pepper in space?
A. There were no enough food for astronauts.
B. Only pepper can grow in space.
C. Pepper can grow better than other plants.
D. Humans wanted to test which plants can grow in space.
29. What special benefits does pepper have relative to other plants?
A. It needn’t too much later care. B. Its nutrients are the highest.
C. The vitamins in it are the most. D. It improves their state of mind most.
30. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 5?
A. Package. B. Container. C. Seed D. Microwave.
31. What can we infer from the text?
A. The idea that pepper is grown in space is silly.
B. Astronaut need special nutrition to keep the best state of mind.
C. Pepper can’t be eaten cooked in space but it can be eaten raw.
D. It is the carrier that is in charge of sending feedback on the peppers.

The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. ”
“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.”
“It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.”
32. What is the purpose of the project?
A. To ensure harmony in care homes. B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.
C. To raise money for medical research. D. To promote the elderly people’s welfare.
33. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier?
A. She has learned new life skills. B. She has gained a sense of achievement.
C. She has recovered her memory. D. She has developed a strong personality.
34. What do the underlined words “embark on” mean in paragraph 7?
A. Improve. B. Oppose. C. Begin. D. Evaluate.

A By turning to a remote control.
B. By using a new two-way microphone.
C. By pressing on the emergency button.
D By calling for help into sliding camera.

A Package. B. Container. C. Seed D. Microwave.
31. What can we infer from the text?
A. The idea that pepper is grown in space is silly.
B. Astronaut need special nutrition to keep the best state of mind.
C Pepper can’t be eaten cooked in space but it can be eaten raw.
D. It is the carrier that is in charge of sending feedback on the peppers.
D
A. Improve. B. Oppose. C. Begin. D. Evaluate.
35. What can we learn about the project from the last two paragraphs?
A. It is well received. B. It needs to be more creative.
