“I first saw the Great Wall on a map in 1967 when I was only 11 years old. I spent a long time trying to work out how long the Great Wall was, but I failed. I thought I would surely go there one day,” said William Lindesay, a Great Wall researcher from the UK.
The Englishman did what he said. He came to China in 1986 with a plan to run the whole length of the Great Wall. But that year his goal was not achieved. William came back a year later and realized his dream. In 1990, he decided to live in China. Then he bought a farmhouse near the Great Wall.
“Many people wonder why I’m obsessed greatly by the Great Wall. The first reason is that it’s beautiful, and the second thing is that it’s outdoors. There’s history in the outdoors. You need to move to discover it. And the third point is it’s fun. The Great Wall is in my mind every day,” said William.
William’s younger son Thomas said, “I often describe my childhood as ‘wild’, staying at the foot of the Great Wall almost every weekend. It’s amazing because not many people get to see such world heritage all the time, and I got to see it all year around.” His elder son James said, “Living here has a lot of effect on how I see the Great Wall. It’s almost like my backyard, so I should protect it.”
William has published 11 books about the Great Wall in 30 years. He has also completed several photo projects on the Great Wall. “It made me so happy when our film was shown on the BBC. For the first time we got an hour and a half to open the eyes of the British , and show them what the Great Wall is. We received lots of emails from people saying that they really enjoyed it and didn’t know that China was so beautiful. I became a ‘Great Wall ambassador (大使)’,” said William.
24. What do we know about William Lindesay?
A. He runs a farm near the Great Wall. B. He measured the length of Great Wall in 1986.
C. His father was an expert on the Great Wall. D. He didn’t climb the Great Wall in his teens.
25. What does the underlined word “obsessed” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Reminded. B. Attracted. C. Struck. D. Buried.
26. Why Thomas and James are mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To introduce their home’s location.
B. To encourage people to protect the Great Wall.
C. To describe the childhood of William’s children.
D. To show the Great Wall’s impact on William’s children.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. William’s sons will work in the film industry.
B. William has become a famous director for his film.
C. William has promoted the spread of Chinese culture abroad.
D. William will work for the Chinese government in the future.
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. D 27. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了来自英国的William Lindesay对长城的喜爱。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“I first saw the Great Wall on a map in 1967 when I was only 11 years old. I spent a long time trying to work out how long the Great Wall was, but I failed. I thought I would surely go there one day(我第一次在地图上看到长城是在1967年,当时我只有11岁。我花了很长时间试图算出长城有多长,但我失败了。我想总有一天我一定会去那里)”和第二段“The Englishman did what he said. He came to China in 1986 with a plan to run the whole length of the Great Wall.(这个英国人说到做到。1986年,他带着跑完长城的计划来到中国)”可知,William Lindesay十几岁时没爬过长城。故选D。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“The first reason is that it’s beautiful, and the second thing is that it’s outdoors. There’s history in the outdoors. You need to move to discover it. And the third point is it’s fun. The Great Wall is in my mind every day(第一个原因是它很美,第二个原因是它在户外。户外也有历史。你需要行动起来去发现它。第三点是它很有趣。长城每天都在我的脑海里)”可知,William给出了喜欢长城的三个原因。由此推知,划线句讲的是他被长城吸引的原因,故划线词为“吸引,着迷”的意思。故选B。
【26题详解】

The concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gained increasing attention in recent years. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and use emotions effectively.
People with high EI are better at understanding their own emotions. They are aware of what they are feeling and why, which allows them to make more rational decisions. For example, if someone with high EI is feeling angry, they can recognize this emotion and take steps to calm themselves down before reacting impulsively.
High-EI individuals are also skilled at understanding the emotions of others. They can empathize with people, which helps them build better relationships. In a team-work environment, for instance, they can sense when a team member is feeling stressed or discouraged and offer support and encouragement.
Managing emotions is another key aspect of EI. People with high EI can regulate their emotions in different situations. They don’t let their emotions get the better of them. For example, in a difficult business negotiation, they can remain calm and composed, even when faced with pressure.
Using emotions effectively means being able to harness emotions to achieve goals. For example, a person with high EI can use their enthusiasm and passion to motivate themselves to work hard towards a challenging project.
Research has shown that people with high EI tend to be more successful in their personal and professional lives. They have better mental health, stronger relationships, and are more likely to reach their career goals.

A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.
Norrina Allen, an associate professor at Northwestern University said that, in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol (胆固醇) in a person’s daily food. People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart disease later in life. However, Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy. “I’m not saying that people should take them completely out of their food,” she said. “I’m just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount.”
Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease. “Cholesterol’s role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years,” said Dennis Bruemmer, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point,” he added.
Bruemmer said, “Eggs in moderation (适度) are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint.” “Moderation,” he added, “is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread.”
Holly Andersen, a doctor at the New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has “real shortcomings”. One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat. “If you’re taking a lot of processed meat, it doesn’t matter how many eggs you’re eating,” Andersen said.
Also, Andersen said, “The study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon.”
32. What does Norrina Allen agree with?
A. Eggs are completely unhealthy.
B. Eggs contain the most cholesterol.
C. Eggs should be eaten in a right amount.
D. Eggs have no connection with heart disease.
33. What is Bruemmer’s attitude towards the study?
A. Interested. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Hopeful.
34. What can we learn from Holly Andersen’s words?
A. Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together.
B. Processed meat may cause heart disease.
C. Processed meat should be avoided.
D. The study is supported by evidence.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Do Eggs Cause Heart Disease?
B. Are Eggs the Top Source of Cholesterol?
C. What’s the Proper Amount of Eggs Eaten?
D. Is the Cholesterol to Blame for Heart Disease?
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. A

【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第5段“Holly Andersen, a doctor at the New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has “real shortcomings”. One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat.If you’re taking a lot of processed meat, it doesn’t matter how many eggs you’re eating,(纽约长老会/威尔·康奈尔医学中心的医生霍莉·安德森(Holly Andersen)同意这项研究具有“真正的缺点”。
故选A。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn’t understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh, dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show. Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really wanted to try. While he was hesitating, a group of British students interested in cultural performances invited him to join them. Li Ming agreed.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Para 1:
During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu. They kept cheering loudly as he performed punches, kicks and graceful stances. They asked him to teach them basic moves, and Li Ming patiently demonstrated step by step, using simple English to explain each action’s meaning. When he struggled to express himself clearly, his new friends listened carefully and helped him find the right words. For the first time, Li Ming forgot his shyness and accent, feeling proud to share his culture. Practice became a joyful time where they learned from each other.
Para 2:
After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening. Many classmates came up to him, praising his wonderful performance and asking about Chinese kung fu. Some even invited him to join their conversations and hang out after school. During group work, he dared to speak up confidently, and his ideas were well-received. He no longer felt left out; instead, he found a sense of belonging. Li Ming realized that his unique culture was a bridge to connect with others, and courage and sharing could help him fit in easily.

28. What is emotional intelligence?
A. The ability to control others’ emotions.
B. The ability to express emotions freely.
C. The ability to understand and manage emotions.
D. The ability to ignore negative emotions.
29. How can people with high EI make rational decisions?
A. By suppressing their emotions.
B. By being aware of their emotions.
C. By following their instincts.
D. By avoiding emotional situations.
30. What is an advantage of understanding others’ emotions?
A. It helps in winning arguments.
B. It allows for better self-reflection.
C. It improves relationship building.
D. It makes people more competitive.
31. Why are people with high EI more successful?
A. They are more intelligent in traditional senses.
B. They have better control over their emotions.
C. They are more aggressive in pursuing goals.
D. They can easily change others’ emotions.
