I live in a big city. Every day, the streets are noisy with the activity of millions of souls, each of them living in their own way. It seems that people from every corner of the planet live here. And every single person has their own unique story.
However, people here can often feel quite lonely. It’s a strange contradiction —you’re surrounded (围绕) by other people at every moment, but you still feel like you’re the only person on the planet. You can walk through a crowd and feel like you’re floating alone in space. Even the busiest shopping mall can feel like a foreign planet.
Have you ever felt like this? It’s not an unusual feeling. Living in crowded urban areas can often make people feel this way. There are many ways to deal with this feeling—but perhaps the best way is to rely on your friends.
When I’m feeling lonely or sad, the first thing I do is pick up my phone and text a friend. All of us are busy with work and personal matters, but my closest friends always take the time to reply. In a world where feelings of loneliness can come so easily, friends are the best antidote (解药) to these feelings. I’ve got through some of the hardest times in my life with the help of my friends. Take time to nurture (培养) your own friendships. You never know when you will need someone to lift you up.
1. What problem is discussed in the story?
A. Noise in big cities. B. Traffic in big cities.
C. The difficulty of making friends. D. The loneliness of living in cities.
2 The underlined word “contradiction” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ________.
A. reply B. mistake C. mismatch D. collection
3. According to the author, the best way to deal with loneliness is to ________.

4. What do we know from the story?
A. Loneliness harms our health. B. Friends cannot always help us.
C. Friendship is important. D. People in cities rarely feel lonely.
5. In which section of a newspaper might you find this story?
A. Health. B. Culture. C. Science. D. Story.

There are about 6,000 languages that are spoken around the world. But 43 percent of these languages are dying out, according to UNESCO. If no action is taken, some of these languages will be gone forever.
Languages become endangered for many reasons. One is that some communities of native speakers of the endangered languages disappear, HuffPost reported. These people sometimes leave their communities and move to cities or towns.
In addition, the languages of “dominant (占主导地位的)” cultures may drive other languages into extinction (灭绝). To get better education and jobs, young people have to focus their attention on learning dominant languages rather than their own languages. Dominant languages include English and French.
Once a language dies, it rarely comes back to life. Governments across the globe are taking action to stop this. The US state of Alaska would announce that the loss of indigenous languages (土著语言) is an “emergency (紧急事件)”.
In New Zealand, the government said it wanted more than 20 percent of the country’s population to be able to speak basic Maori by 2024. It provided Maori lessons in all New Zealand schools, The New York Times reported.
China is also trying to protect its languages. About 130 languages are spoken in China, even more than the number of ethnic groups in the country. In 2015, the government started a project to record all the languages spoken in China, Xinhua reported. Universities like Minzu University of China have created ethnic minority language majors (专业) for their students.
6. How many languages worldwide are in danger of dying out?
A. About 2,580 languages. B. About 3,420 languages.
C. About 4,300 languages. D. About 6,000 languages.
7. According to Paragraph 2, why might a language die out?
A. Speakers move away and stop using it. B. It is too difficult to learn.
C. It is used in closed communities. D. Schools don’t offer lessons for it.
8. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The emergency in Alaska. B. The extinction of languages.
C. Action taken to save endangered languages. D. The loss of dominant languages.
9. What step did New Zealand take to help save the Maori language?
A. Spread the language overseas. B. Offered Maori lessons in schools.
C. Recorded the language in books and media. D. Limited the use of other languages.
10. Which title is the best for the passage?
A. Losing Our Languages B. Protecting Ethnic Groups
C. Improving College Courses D. Building Native Communities

Before you read this article, let’s take a look at a sentence in Chinese: “研表究明,汉字序顺并不定一影阅响读。” Did you notice that some of the characters in this sentence are in the wrong order? You might not realize it, but your brain can read and understand most sentences, even when the words are in the wrong order.
This may have something to do with psychology, according to Chen Qingrong from Nanjing Normal University.
When we’re first learning how to read, we read word by word. But after we become more experienced, we read in full phrases and even sentences. People can read five to six words at one time, Chen told the Yangtse Evening Post. Also, as experienced readers, we take the things we’re familiar with for granted (把……当做理所当然). We don’t pay as much attention to small details, such as word order.
Therefore, when we read the sentence at the beginning of this article, the content was already familiar to us. So we read it the way we think it should be in our memory, with all the words in the right order. This is like when we see a person with long hair, we think the person is a girl without taking a closer look, according to Chen.
This can be also seen in many other languages, such as English. Read the following sentence: “This is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the word as a wlohe.”
It is believed that humans remember the meanings of words mostly by their shape and layout, rather than the order of the letters, Matt Davis of Cambridge University told The Independent.
However, we cannot read scrambled (乱的) sentences as quickly and efficiently as we read normal text, according to The Daily Telegraph.
11. If the words in a sentence are in the wrong order, we may ________.
A. still be able to read it B. have trouble understanding it
C. correct it immediately D. have to ask others for help
12. According to Chen Qingrong, why doesn’t word order affect experienced readers?
A. They read sentences word by word. B. They read in complete phrases or sentences.
C. They often pay special attention to small details. D. They are familiar with the wrong order of sentences.
13. The example sentence in Paragraph 5 shows that ________.
A. English is different from other languages
B. many languages are read in full phrases
C. English speakers pay more attention to word order
D. English sentences are easier to remember from their shape
14. Paragraph 6 is written to ________.
A. show that people care more about sentence shape
B. give suggestions on how to remember the meanings of words
C. explain why people can understand scrambled English sentences
D. stress that the order of the letters in a sentence is not important
15. What is the main idea of the article?
A. Words should always appear in the right order.
B. We can read and understand scrambled sentences.
C. We don’t always pay attention to small details.
D. We remember the meanings of words by the order of the letters.
D
Since Apple dropped its iPhone 17 on Sept 9, the “Cosmic Orange” color for the Pro model has turned heads. It is a move away from more common colors, such as white and black.
Colors are more than just visual effects (效果). According to the American Marketing Association, bright colors can make a product seem better, even if the color doesn’t actually change how the product works. This happens because the richness or purity of a color might make people more confident in the product.
Why is this? According to an article from the University of Leeds, when light comes into our eyes, special cells (细胞) at the back of our eyes react to different colors and send signals (信号) to the brain. Most signals go to the visual cortex (视觉皮层), where we see pictures. But some are sent to another part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑). This part controls things in our body, such as temperature and mood.
So, this means colors can change how our bodies feel. For example, blue light can make our blood flow and heartbeat slow down. It can also lower our blood pressure and help us relax, according to the University of Derby in the UK. Orange, on the other hand, wakes up our senses, making it great for catching attention.
However, no color has been shown to increase sales more than others, said researchers at the University of Southern California in the US. Still, successful brands often use colors to create their images. For example, Coca-Cola uses red because it increases heart rate (心率) and improves appetite (食欲).
16. Which color makes products seem better according to the story?
A. Brown. B. Black. C. Gray. D. Orange.
17. How do some colors improve how people feel about products?
A. They react to special cells in our eyes. B. They excite more parts of the brain.
C. They make the brain produce more signals. D. They go directly to the brain’s visual cortex.
18. What effect does blue light have on people?
A. It wakes up their senses. B. It increases heart rate.
C. It helps them relax. D. It makes them feel hungry.
19. Why does Coca-Cola use red as its brand color?
A. To make people feel thirsty. B. To build a brand image.
C. To show product quality. D. To control the whole market.
20. What is the story mainly about?
A. How the body reacts to different colors. B. How special colors become popular.
C. What new colors Apple used for its phones. D. Why bright colors are used for products.

“Let’s go! Wahoo!” Sept 13 marked the 40th anniversary of the game Super Mario Bros. With his red hat and famous mustache (小胡子), the Italian plumber (水管工) Mario first appeared in the game Donkey Kong (1981). Later in 1985, he became famous with Super Mario Bros.
In this game, the Mushroom Kingdom is taken over by King Koopa. With his helpers, he takes Princess Peach away. Mario and his brother Luigi, both plumbers, hear about what has happened and set off to help.

He is also a race car driver, an Olympic player and a doctor. On top of all this, he throws a lot of house parties. In real life, no one could do all of these things. That’s why Mario has won the hearts of millions of fans around the world.
Mario’s actions in the game can be easily understood by everyone. As Mario’s creator, Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, explained in an NPR interview in 2015, “Everyone is afraid of falling from a great height. If there is a gap (缺口) that you have to cross, everyone is going to try to run to jump across... that’s what really resonated with (引起共鸣) people.”
Thanks to these features, Mario has become an international symbol of gaming. Since the start of Super Mario Bros., he has appeared in more than 200 games. The Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner. I’m writing to invite you to celebrate this special day with my family. Since you are interested in Chinese culture, it would be a great chance for you to experience our traditional customs.
We will enjoy mooncakes and a big dinner together. After that, we plan to admire the full moon and share stories about the festival. You can learn how Chinese families express love and wishes during this time.
I believe you will find it meaningful because you can taste traditional food and understand the spirit of the festival. It will surely be an unforgettable experience for you.
Looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
