The Time of Watering The best time to water plants is in the morning. This lets the water go deeply into the soil before the weather gets too hot. If you water later in the day, the water will just evaporate (蒸发) from the surface. If you water in the evening, the plants stay too wet overnight. The risk of mold, mildew and fungal diseases increases. The Ways of Watering If you water quickly every day, it does not help the roots, which can extend over 30 centimetres into the soil. Water the soil less often, but deeply. Be careful when watering very dry soil as the water will just run off without getting into the soil. Go slow and make sure the water is absorbing. Catch and Reuse Water One way to help keep costs low for watering is to use recycled water. Instead of pouring water out after boiling foods, keep it and reuse it to water plants. Just make sure the water does not have salt in it. Choose Native Plants Drought-resistant plants should not be overwatered when trying to keep thirstier plants watered. It is also best to use plants that are native to the area where you live. These plants tend to be resistant to drought. They just need regular watering their first two years. After that, they can live on just rainwater except for during times of extreme heat. Keep Moisture(水分) In Adding 5 to 8 centimetres of mulch (覆盖物) around the plants can reduce the evaporation of water and reduce weed growth. Make sure the soil is warm before adding the mulch. Create a 7-to-8-centimetre border away from the base of the plants. 1. Which suggestion best reflects the concept of water recycling? A. Keep Moisture In. B. The Time of Watering. C. Choose Native Plants. D. Catch and Reuse Water. 2. What is the biggest benefits of planting local plants? A. Reducing weed growth. B. Being watered freely. C. Tolerance to drought. D. Reducing fungal diseases. 3. Who is the most recommended reader for this article? A. Gardeners. B. Plant experts. C. Environmentalists. D. Landscape architects. 1. D 2. C 3. Instead of pouring water out after boiling foods, keep it and reuse it to water plants. Just make sure the water does not have salt in it.(降低灌溉成本的一种方法是使用循环水。 根据Choose Native Plants部分的“It is also best to use plants that are native to the area where you live. These plants tend to be resistant to drought.(最好使用你所居住地区的原生植物。 根据文章第一段“Let’s look at some cost-saving ways to keep your garden watered during the hot months of summer.(让我们来看看一些省钱的方法,让你的花园在炎热的夏天保持浇水。)” A。 B I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved to the neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to meet me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, scared of looking at each other. Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other, riding bikes to each other’s house and having sleepovers. In 7th grade she was going through family problems. However, every summer we would sit at each other’s house, watch movies on TV and talk about all the boys we liked. It was last year that I noticed the problem. She suffered from clinical depression (临床抑郁症), and had to go to a hospital during the day. I was very sorry for her at first. But with the late night calls and meeting each other halfway up the street at midnight, we still stayed in touch. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend left her, and I knew I still cared about her like a sister. Yesterday she came to me and said, “I never knew what a best friend was until you were the only person that would stop me from cutting myself and that ever made me feel better about myself and my problems. You didn’t know this but I was trying to kill myself that very night you called me and I was crying. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were helping me. ” We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never give up your friends. Even if they aren’t as cool as others, or people think they are crazy, they need someone there. If you leave them, you will only be very sorry. So if your friends need you, and you care about them, you should be always there for them. 4. Why did the two girls hide behind their family members when they first met? A. Because they were playing a game. B. Because they didn’t like each other. C. Because they quarreled before. D. Because they were both shy. 5. What’s the problem of my best friend? A. family problems B. having difficulty in studying C. clinical depression D. bad relationship with classmates 6. What would have happened to her friend if the author had not cared about her? A. She would have lost her new best friend. B. She would have killed herself that night. C. She would have run away from her family. D. She would have stayed in hospital for a long time. 7. What lesson can we learn from the story? A. Always care about your friends. B. Don’t care about others’ opinions. C. Never owe your friends too much. D. Try to be as cool as others. D 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第一段“I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved to the neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to meet me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, scared of looking at each other. 和第二段“Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other, riding bikes to each other’s house and having sleepovers. 根据第三段“It was last year that I noticed the problem. She suffered from clinical depression (临床抑郁症), and had to go to a hospital during the day. 根据第四段“Yesterday she came to me and said, “I never knew what a best friend was until you were the only person that would stop me from cutting myself and that ever made me feel better about myself and my problems. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were helping me. ” (昨天她对我说:“我从来不知道什么是最好的朋友,直到你成为唯一一个能阻止我割伤自己,让我对自己和自己的问题感觉更好的人。”你不知道,你打电话给我的那天晚上我想自杀,我哭了。我欠你太多了,而你甚至不知道你在帮助我。”)”可知如果作者不关心她的朋友,她的朋友那天可能会自杀,故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never give up your friends. Even if they aren’t as cool as others, or people think they are crazy, they need someone there. If you leave them, you will only be very sorry. So if your friends need you, and you care about them, you should be always there for them. A。 C It may come as a shock to owners, but dogs hate being hugged, a study has shown. Animal psychologists say dogs feel stressed and unhappy when they are hugged by their owners, because it stops them being able to run away. In a study which analyzed 25 pictures of dogs as they were being hugged, eight out of ten animals looked clearly uncomfortable. Experts at The Kennel Club, and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, also agreed that owners should not treat their dogs like children, because most pets did not like to be hugged. The new study was carried out by Dr Stanley Coren, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia. He analysed images of dogs being hugged by adults and children he found on the Internet, looking for signs of stress. At an extreme end, when a dog is especially anxious it shows its teeth or may bite, but Dr Coren said there are other signs that it may be uncomfortable but they are small and not obvious. Signs of stress include the dog folding its ears down, half- moon eyes or turning its head away to avoid eye contact. If the dog has its eyes closed, it could also be a sign of anxiety. Open its mouth or raising one paw is another warning sign. “The clear suggestion to come out of this research is to save your hugs for your two- footed family members and lovers.” It is clearly better from the dog’s point of view if you express your fondness for your pet with a pat, a kind word, rand maybe a treat. Some people think that giving their dog a hug is a nice thing to do, but the reality is that a family pet will often tolerate a hug but doesn’t like it. “On the whole dogs are sociable animals and love communicating with people, but any action that restricts a dog’s movement could make them uncomfortable and it is important for an owner to recognize the signs of stress or anxiety.” 8. According to the study, what might a dog not feel when it is being hugged? A. Stressed. B. Uncomfortable. C. Shocked. D. Unhappy. 9. Which of the following is not the sign of stress for dogs? A. Showing its teeth. B. Folding its ears down. C. Raising one paw. D. Keeping eye contact. 10. According to the passage, what are dog owners suggested to do? A. Hug their family members more. B. Stop touching their dogs. C. Stop treating their dogs as friends. D. Leave their dogs alone. 11. What’s the main idea of this passage? A. A study shows that dogs hate being treated like children. B. A study tells owners that dogs dislike being hugged. C. A study teaches owners how to treat a stressed dog. D. A study teaches owners how to recognize an uncomfortable dog. C 9. D 10. A 11. 由文章第二段“Animal psychologists say dogs feel stressed and unhappy when they are hugged by their owners, because it stops them being able to run away. 由文章第七段“Signs of stress include the dog folding its ears down, half- moon eyes or turning its head away to avoid eye contact. If the dog has its eyes closed, it could also be a sign of anxiety. Open its mouth or raising one paw is another warning sign. 由文章倒数第四段“The clear suggestion to come out of this research is to save your hugs for your two- footed family members and lovers. 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“It may come as a shock to owners, but dogs hate being hugged, a study has shown. B。 D Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you are at school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity(成熟) and sense of responsibility(责任). A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same. Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not really friends. They are superficial(表面的)only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the real or the “phoney”. True friends are most special. Sometimes they might not easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is eager to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. A true friend is someone you can talk to about any subject or problem. You and your true friend have good understanding of each other. True friends support you, take your side, and build up your confidence. 12. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph? A. How to make true friends. B. What is friendship based on. C. We should make friends in our childhood. D. Friends play a very important role in our life. 13. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. It is easy to have many true friends if you are rich. B. If you have no music in you, one of your friends will be a music lover. C. The friendship developing during your school days will be with you for a long time. D. What you value above anything is the friendship developing during childhood. 14. What does the underlined phrase “so-called ‘friends’” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Friends in need. B. Fair-weather friends. C. Those who can help you. D. Those who often gives you money. 15. What’s the author’s attitude towards “true friends” according to paragraph 3? A. True friends are too difficult to find. B. You can only share sadness with a true friend. C. You can simply share happiness with a true friend. D. True friends will stand by you whatever happens. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据文章第一段“Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life.(朋友在每个人的生活中扮演着非常重要的角色。)”以及“Friends influence your development, maturity(成熟) and sense of responsibility(责任).(朋友影响你的发展、成熟和责任感。)” 根据文章第一段“Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long.(那些你在学生时代交的朋友通常可以持续很长时间。)”以及“Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same.(友谊是以共同的兴趣为基础的。 根据文章第二段划线词之前“Superficial friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage.(肤浅的朋友只有在对他们有利的情况下才愿意和你做朋友。)”以及划线词之后“if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the real or the “phoney”.(如果你很富有,到这个时候,你应该能够认出你的朋友是真的还是“假的”。)” 根据文章第三段“True friends are most special. Why is Chinese a Good Language to Learn If there’s one language in the world that’s worth learning, it’s the Chinese language. No dog waits for me at the bus stop. No cat sits beside me while I read. I don’t even have a tiny, furry hamster (仓鼠) to hold in my hand. But I don’t feel sorry. Why? The rule about no pets at our house is not because I am too young to have pets, because I am 11 years old. Besides, I am very responsible. I always return library books on time and I do my homework every day, even when I would rather play in the grass. The rule about no pets is because of Kevin. He is my little brother and he is sensitive to pets, which make him sneeze (打喷嚏). He was diagnosed (诊断) with allergies (过敏) to cats and dogs. One day, when I was walking home from school, I heard a soft little sound from behind a garbage. I stopped and listened. There it was. I heard the sound again. I walked quietly up the driveway and looked behind the garbage. A tiny ball of gray fur looked up at me and said, “Meow.” Before I knew it, I was holding the cat. Before I knew it, I was walking toward home, holding the cat in my arms. She must be lost. “Finders keepers,” I thought. I took the cat upstairs to my room. We played with a ball, and she jumped high to catch the ball. I was excited that I made a comfortable little bed for her in a box with a small blanket and gave her milk to drink. Soon, my mother called me to dinner. Paragraph 1: Not long after I sat down at the table, Kevin started sneezing. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: To my surprise my mom didn’t get angry when she saw the cat. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Not long after I sat down at the table, Kevin started sneezing. At first, it was just a few light sneezes, but soon he was sneezing uncontrollably. Mom immediately asked, “Denise, did you bring a pet home?” I hesitated, knowing I had to tell the truth. I led them upstairs to my room, and there was the little gray cat, curled up in her box. Kevin’s sneezing got worse, and Mom quickly took him to the living room. I felt guilty and worried, realizing I had forgotten about Kevin’s allergies. To my surprise, my mom didn’t get angry when she saw the cat. She gently said, “Denise, I know you love animals, but we can’t keep her because of Kevin’s allergies.” Then she suggested, “Let’s put up some ‘Lost Cat’ posters around the neighborhood. Maybe her owner is looking for her.” I agreed, feeling a mix of sadness and relief. We made posters with a picture of the cat and our phone number. A few days later, the cat’s owner called. He was so grateful, and I felt happy knowing the cat was back home, even though I couldn’t keep her. I realized that sometimes, doing the right thing means letting go, and that’s okay. 1】I felt guilty and worried, realizing I had forgotten about Kevin’s allergies. B I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. C It may come as a shock to owners, but dogs hate being hugged, a study has shown. D Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. A Friends in need. B. Fair-weather friends. C Those who can help you. D. Those who often gives you money. 15. What’s the author’s attitude towards “true friends” according to paragraph 3? A. True friends are too difficult to find. B. You can only share sadness with a true friend. C. You can simply share happiness with a true friend. D. We played with a ball and she jumped high to catch the ball. I was excited that I made a comfortable little bed for her in a box with a small blanket and gave her milk to drink. Soon, my mother called me to dinner. Paragraph 1: Not long after I sat down at the table, Kevin started sneezing. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: To my surprise, my mom didn’t get angry when she saw the cat. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
