Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022.
Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding (编码) tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text.
Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the Al system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent.
Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions. The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven algorithm (算法) to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers-led by Alphabet’s AI company DeepMind-said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written. The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.

More than 20 years ago, Yung-Chi Cheng, a Yale professor in drug development for cancer, had a pioneering idea: what if he could unlock the potential of ancient Chinese medicines for treating cancer? What if he could design botanical drugs that would make traditional cancer treatments work better? No one had done it before. Fellow researchers and experts advised him to change course, because developing botanical drugs was too complicated and too risky. But Cheng didn’t let the idea go.
Now, in a landmark moment in cancer research, Cheng and research partners are launching the first international clinical trial for a botanical drug, YIV-906. Shwu-Hucy Liu, a postdoctoral researcher in Cheng’s Yale lab, spent hours leafing through ancient Chinese texts at Yale’s library seeking the properties of Chinese herbs. She returned with Huang Qin Tang, a 1,800-year-old treatment for stomach illnesses, based on which the team developed a drug and tested it on one thousand mice.
What followed were years of additional testing of the drug’s effectiveness for a range of cancers in multiple human studies involving over 200 patients. The positive effects displayed again and again, YIV-906 not only reduced the side effects of radiation treatment, but also led to faster recovery and longer survival rates.
All they need now are larger data sets. When the results of the international trial are available about three years from now, YIV-906 may find itself next in a long line of breakthrough drugs developed from natural products, which includes a malaria (疟疾) treatment developed from the Chinese herb qinghao, the discovery of which led to a Nobel Prize for chemist Tu Youyou.
It has been a long journey, but if Cheng and his team are successful, it could create a new approach to treating cancer. They called the new approach “WE” medicine, a combination of Western medicine and Eastern medicine. “It’s a totally new model. I’ve met with a lot of doubt, but think the results will speak for themselves,” Cheng said.
4. What did fellow researchers initially think of Cheng’s research?
A. Creative. B. Comprehensive. C. Conventional. D. Challenging.
5. Why did Liu refer to ancient Chinese texts?
A. She wanted to question ancient treatment methods.
B. She desired to find inspiration for treating diseases.
C. She tried to document the history of Chinese herbs.
D. She determined to find a cure for stomach illnesses.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Steps of the drug testing. B. The application of YIV-906.
C. Effects of the clinical trial. D. The effectiveness of YIV-906.
7. Why does the author mention Chinese herb qinghao?
A. To illustrate the value of botanical drugs.
B. To advocate the adoption of “WE” medicine.
C. To praise Tu’s contributions to drug development.
D. To highlight its success in medicine development.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. D 7. A

6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“What followed were years of additional testing of the drug’s effectiveness for a range of cancers in multiple human studies involving over 200 patients. The positive effects displayed again and again, YIV-906 not only reduced the side effects of radiation treatment, but also led to faster recovery and longer survival rates.( 接下来的几年里,科学家们在涉及200多名患者的多项人体研究中,对这种药物对一系列癌症的有效性进行了额外的测试。YIV-906不仅减少了放射治疗的副作用,而且恢复得更快,生存率更长,积极的效果一次又一次地显示出来)”可知,第三段主要讲了YIV-906的有效性。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“When the results of the international trial are available about three years from now, YIV-906 may find itself next in a long line of breakthrough drugs developed from natural products, which includes a malaria (疟疾) treatment developed from the Chinese herb ginghao, the discovery of which led to a Nobel Prize for chemist Tu Youyou.( 大约三年后,当国际试验的结果公布时,YIV-906可能会成为从天然产物中开发的一长串突破性药物中的下一个,其中包括从中药青蒿中开发的一种治疗疟疾的药物,该药物的发现使化学家屠呦呦获得了诺贝尔奖)”可推知,作者提到中药青蒿是为了说明植物性药物的价值。故选A项。
C
Just being smart doesn’t mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less smart doesn’t mean that person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth.
She works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Like many other researchers, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality (品质) independent of smarts. They had what she now calls grit (毅力). Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it.
In one study of people 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that grit increases with education. People who had finished college scored higher in the grit test than people who quit before graduation did. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how smarts and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone’s score in the grit test. Students with higher grades seem to have more grit. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.
But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Credé, a teacher at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently showed the results of 88 studies on grit. Together, nearly 67,000 people took part in these studies. And grit did not predict success, Credé found.
However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting. It’s a basic personality quality, Credé notes — not something that can be changed.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Credé says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”
8. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. Grit decides how smart one might be.
B. Grit is a quality dependent (依赖的) on smarts.
C. Success has nothing to do with smarts.
D. Smart people may not succeed.
9. What might influence a person’s grit according to Angela Duckworth’s findings?
A. Lifestyles. B. Family tradition. C. Education. D. Personality types.
10. What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Doubt. B. Reply. C. Accept. D. Warn.
11. What is Credé’s opinion about grit?
A. It is strongly related to test anxiety.
B. It can hardly be taught in school.
C. It should be paid no attention to in teaching.
D. It can’t influence students’ school grades.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B
根据第一段中“Just being smart doesn’t mean someone will be successful. (聪明并不意味着一定会成功)”可知,聪明的人未必会成功。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“She also found that grit increases with education. People who had finished college scored higher in the grit test than people who quit before graduation did. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher. (她还发现,毅力随着教育程度的提高而增加。在毅力测试中,大学毕业的人比毕业前辍学的人得分更高。大学毕业后去读研的人得分更高)”可知,Angela Duckworth发现,教育程度可以影响一个人的毅力,后者随着前者的提高而增加。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词的上一段中“So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone’s score in the grit test. Students with higher grades seem to have more grit. (因此,她将测试智商的大学入学考试的分数与学校成绩和某人在毅力测试中的分数进行了比较。成绩越高的学生似乎更有毅力)”可知,Angela Duckworth的研究发现毅力和成功有很大关系,再结合划线词前的But可知,此处有转折。由此推知,一些人反对毅力意味着成功这个观点,counter意思应该是“反对,质疑”,与doubt意思相近。故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中““We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.” (“我们可以教学生如何好好学习。我们可以帮助他们缓解考试焦虑,”他补充道。“我不确定我们能否把毅力教给他们。”)”可知,在Credé看来,毅力这种品质无法在学校中教授。故选B项。
D
On October 12, 2021, China officially announced its first five national parks, which are homes to endangered species ranging from the Siberian tigers on the Russian border to the world’s last 30 Hainan black crested gibbons (黑冠长臂猿) in southern China’s tropical rainforest.
By uniting hundreds of protected areas managed by various provinces, the new national park system’s goal is to strengthen conservation under the central authority of the new National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA).
These five parks cover an area two-third the size of the US national park system. The largest, Sanjiangyuan National Park in Qinghai Province, is almost the size of Mississippi.
With such an ambitious plan, there are bound to be challenges. For one the government has to balance the need for the livelihoods of the locals with wildlife conservation. It has not announced a plan to create a permitting system that would regulate how people enjoy nature. What’s more, ecotourism-which is defined as tourism that benefits both locals and their environment-only exists in a fifth of China’s nature reserves.
But there’s hope that the existing ecotourism projects in such nature reserves as Sanjiangyuan National Park and Wolong Nature Reserve will inspire efforts elsewhere in the new park system. Since 2018, Sanjiangyuan National Park has run a community-led tourism program that benefits both locals and snow leopards (豹), the park’s main tourist draw. For $43 a day, visitors can stay with local families, who act as guides to spot these rare “cats” in the wild.
“The community has made all the major decisions, and 100 percent of the income stays in the community. It’s been incredibly successful,” says Marc Brody, who has worked in China since 1994.
NFGA agrees that well-designed ecotourism can improve local ecosystems. It says that a core mission (核心使命) of China’s national parks is to promote eco-civilization mission that can be advanced by involving visitors. Written into China’s constitution (宪法) in 2012, eco-civilization means scientifically balancing the economic development and the environmental protection.
12. Which park is home to the thirty endangered gibbons?
A. Hainan National Park. B. Wolong Nature Reserve.
C. Northeast National Park. D. Sanjiangyuan National Park.
13. What can be learned about Sanjiangyuan National Park?
A. It is bigger than Mississippi. B. It sits on the Russian border.
C. It is a pioneer in ecotourism. D. It has a mature permitting system.
14 What is the main purpose of China’s national parks?
A. To protect the endangered animals.
B. To help the local people out of poverty.
C. To give equal importance to the economy and the environment.
D. To set a better development example for the world.
15. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. New Chapter in China’s First National Parks: Eco-Civilization.
B. National Parks Under Construction: Hope or Challenge?
C. How to Balance Economic Development and Environmental Protection?
D. Sanjingyuan National Park - China’s Hidden Natural Treasure
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. A

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever felt the need to be alone for a while? I don’t mean situations when you should be alone, but occasions where you are with a group of people at a party or a restaurant. You get tired of jumping from conversation to conversation, and your mind starts to wander towards that interesting book you left halfway done, or that movie you have been meaning to watch. ___16___ Now before you rush to defense, please understand that being an introvert (内向的人)is completely normal.
A common misunderstanding about introverts is that they are loners or anti-social. ___17___ They have friends, probably not as many as extroverts (外向的人), but enough to suit their needs for human interaction. Scientifically, all humans fall somewhere between being an introvert and being an extrovert, and at least 25 percent of us are introverts.
___18___ Therefore, the ability to network is extremely valuable. Of course, sometimes introverts might be as capable of talking with people as extroverts, but sometimes they have to force themselves to engage with others in order to “fit in”. While extroverts feel comfortable shaking hands and making jokes, introverts get increasingly exhausted. ___19___ For the introverted, to continue in this awkward situation could really end up bringing them harm, with individuals reporting to suffer from loss of sleep, panic attacks and depression.
___20___ They form deep thoughts, conduct themselves carefully, and pay significant attention to detail. So, for the best results in a project involving group work, both introverts and extroverts are needed.
A. Society appears to favor extroverts.
B. Most introverts, however, are just regular people.
C. These are feelings usually typical of an introvert.
D. Introverts tend to recover by spending time alone.
E. You might have ignored that “strange” thought you had before.
F. Introverts, just like extroverts, have their own set of advantages.
G. Even if standing alone for a while, they get asked “Why are you all by yourself?”
【答案】16. C 17. B 18. A 19. G 20. F
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要对内向的人进行了相关解读和介绍。
【16题详解】
根据空处上句“You get tired of jumping from conversation to conversation, and your mind starts to wander towards that interesting book you left halfway done, or that movie you have been meaning to watch.(你厌倦了从一个话题跳到另一个话题,你的思想开始徘徊在那本有趣的书上,或者你一直想看的电影上。)”可知,这里是在介绍内向者的某些典型特征,而C项“These are feelings usually typical of an introvert.(这些都是典型的内向者的感觉。)”是对上句的总结和承接。故选C项。
【17题详解】
根据空处上句“A common misunderstanding about introverts is that they are loners or anti-social.(对内向者的一个常见误解是,他们是孤独者或反社会者。)”可知,B选项“Most introverts, however, are just regular people.(然而,大多数内向的人只是普通人。)”和上句均是对内向者的一种解读,且互为转折关系。故选B项。
【18题详解】
根据空处后两句“Therefore, the ability to network is extremely valuable. Of course, sometimes introverts might be as capable of talking with people as extroverts, but sometimes they have to force themselves to engage with others in order to “fit in”. (因此,交际能力是极其宝贵的。当然,有时内向的人可能和外向的人一样有能力与人交谈,但有时他们不得不强迫自己与他人交流以“融入”。)”可知,这里和A选项“Society appears to favor extroverts.(社会似乎偏爱外向的人。)”一样,都是在介绍内向的人和外向的人的交际能力的差异,且空处与下句形成因果关系,指的是以对内向的人来说,拥有交际能力在社会上显得尤为重要。故选A项。
【19题详解】
根据空处下句中的“For the introverted, to continue in this awkward situation could really end up bringing them harm(对于内向的人来说,继续处于这种尴尬的境地可能最终会给他们带来伤害)”可知,G选项“Even if standing alone for a while, they get asked “Why are you all by yourself?”(即使是一个人站一会儿,他们也会被问到:“你为什么总是一个人?”)”是对下文中“this awkward situation(这种尴尬的境地)”一种具体举例。故选G项。
【20题详解】
根据空处下句“They form deep thoughts, conduct themselves carefully, and pay significant attention to detail.(他们思想深邃,行事谨慎,注重细节。)”可知,这里是对F选项“Introverts, just like extroverts, have their own set of advantages.(内向的人,就像外向的人一样,有他们自己的优势。)”的进一步解释,说明内向的人的具体优势。故选F项。

【答案】范文:
Dear classmates,
It is my great honor to be here to share my views on AI teachers. Recently we have had a heated discussion about whether human teachers will be replaced by AI teachers.
Generally speaking, it’s widely believed that AI teachers have several positive aspects. Not only can we easily have access to them wherever we are, but also we can get personalized learning plans based on our own needs.
Nevertheless, shortcomings are obvious. Failing to adjust teaching methods according to students’ performance, AI teachers can’t understand their subtle feelings.
As far as I am concerned, there is no denying that human teachers play an irreplaceable role in education. Most importantly, we should learn how to make full use of AI’s advantages while avoiding its disadvantages. I firmly believe that they will work together to create a better learning environment.
Thank you.

第四节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was nominated (提名) for our school’s debate team. I jumped at the chance. When I got home that day, I began to fill out the application form, trying hard to prove how I met all the team’s criteria: strong communication skills, teamwork, and a good understanding of current events.
The next day, I handed in my application and waited with eagerness. I was on tenterhooks (如坐针毡) , anticipation building up with each tick of the clock.
Two weeks went by, and I received a letter from the school about the debate team, which began with “I’m sorry to…”. As soon as the school bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house. My mother was typing at the computer.
“Mom,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, “I didn’t make the debate team.”
She looked up, a smile playing on her lips, thinking I was joking, and playfully reached out to high-five me. But the tears in my eyes told a different story.
“No, really, I wasn’t picked,” I told her, handing her the letter.
Her smile faded, replaced by a look of genuine concern. “Oh, sweetheart, I’m sorry,” she said, surprised. “There must be some mistake.” She called the debate team advisor, but he confirmed there were no mistakes and the decision was final. Hearing that, I broke down and burst out crying.
The rejection stung (刺痛) me, especially when I saw friends celebrating their acceptance. I felt cheated, questioning the fairness of the process. In my view, some selected didn’t deserve it as much as I did. Bitterness crept (潜入) into my words as I complained.
“I’m the best fit for the team,” I protested.
“See, Jenny, complaining won’t get you on the team.” Mom gave me a serious look.

【答案】参考范文:
I stared at Mom and listened eagerly. She shared her own stories of failure and disappointment and how she turned them into opportunities for growth. “Every rejection is a lesson,” she said. With her guidance, I spent the next three months improving my skills. I practiced debates, read extensively to stay updated on current events, and sought feedback from teachers and peers. I even started a debate club after school to gain more experience.
I did make it when a second chance came 3 months later. When the team needed an extra member for an upcoming tournament, they considered my dedication and improvement. This time, I was ready. My performance in the tryouts was confident and well-prepared. Joining the team was a sweet victory, but the real win was in the resilience I had built and the lessons I had learned along the way. My mother’s wisdom had steered me through a tough time, and I was grateful for the journey that had made me a better debater and a stronger person.

The positive effects displayed again and again YIV-906 not only reduced the side effects of radiation treatment, but also led to faster recovery and longer survival rates.
C Effects of the clinical trial.
Written into China’s constitution (宪法) in 2012 eco-civilization means scientifically balancing the economic development and the environmental protection.
12. Which park is home to the thirty endangered gibbons?
A. Hainan National Park. B. Wolong Nature Reserve.
C. Northeast National Park. D. Sanjiangyuan National Park.
13. What can be learned about Sanjiangyuan National Park?
A. It is bigger than Mississippi. B. It sits on the Russian border.
C. It is a pioneer in ecotourism. D. It has a mature permitting system.
14. What is the main purpose of China’s national parks?
