Pushing Yourself Further
My school went on a camp in the north of the city last Friday. We did simple things like cooking food in the bush (灌木) and sleeping in tents (帐篷). Among all of them, I enjoyed the two exciting activities most.
One of the activities was called Flying Fox. When you are taking part in the activity, you are connected to a wire (金属线) that begins from the top of a mountain to the ground. Then you jump off the mountain. There are very strong ropes so you are very safe.
Before I went on the Flying Fox, I was a bit afraid. My classmates kept on encouraging me. So I closed my eyes and jumped. I felt my whole body was flying! It was so wonderful!
Some students in my class were also afraid of doing it at first. We just cheered them up and encouraged them. In the end, everyone in my class enjoyed it.
The other activity was called High Ropes. You need to walk on a wire in midair. To make yourself safe, you should hold the ropes hanging in the tree. Every time you walk on and take hold of the next rope, the space between the ropes becomes longer.
I once missed a rope and fell from the wire. My heart was in my mouth! Thanks to the protection equipment (设备), I didn’t fall to the ground. I pulled myself up and kept going. When I arrived at the final place, I felt so pleased. I thought it was like life: you just have to keep going no matter what happens. This camp was really enjoyable. I hope I can go to more camps in the future.

A spacesuit is much more than a set of clothes astronauts wear on spacewalks. A full spacesuit is really a one-person spacecraft. The spacesuit protects the astronaut from the dangers of being outside in space.
Spacesuits help astronauts in several ways. Spacewalking astronauts face different temperatures. Around the earth, conditions in space can be as cold as around -156℃. In the sunlight, they can be as hot as 121℃. A spacesuit protects astronauts from those extreme temperatures.
Spacesuits also provide astronauts with O2 to breathe while they are in space. They contain water to drink during spacewalks. They protect astronauts from being hit by a small object in space. It may not sound very dangerous, but when even the small object is moving many times faster than a bullet, it can be very harmful to astronauts. Spacesuits also protect astronauts from radiation (辐射) in space. The suits even have parts to protect astronauts’ eyes from the bright sunlight.
The spacesuit includes several parts. The body equipment covers the astronaut’s body. The arm equipment covers the arms and connects to the gloves. The helmet (头盔) and another equipment are used to protect the astronaut’s head while still allowing him or her to see as much as possible. The lower equipment covers the astronaut’s legs and feet. These parts have different functions. They can do many different things, from keeping O2 within the spacesuit to protecting from being hit.
Under the spacesuit, astronauts wear a set of cooling equipment. Tubes (管子) are put into this tight-fitting piece of clothing that covers the whole body except for the head, hands and feet. Water moves through these tubes to keep the astronaut cool during the spacewalk.
On the back of the spacesuit is a backpack. This backpack provides the O2 that astronauts breathe during a spacewalk. It also takes CO2 away. The backpack also provides electricity for the suit. A fan moves the O2 through the spacesuit and life support systems, and a water tank holds the cooling water that moves through the cooling device.
Another device called the Simplified Aid for Extravehicular Activity Rescue, or SAFER is necessary. If an astronaut became separated from the space station, he or she could use SAFER to fly back.
29. What does the backpack on the spacesuit provide according to the passage?
A. CO2. B. Food. C. Radiation. D. Electricity.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. A small object hurts a little to astronauts in space.
B. SAFER helps astronauts return to the space station.
C. A spacesuit is just a kind of clothes to wear in space.
D. An astronaut needs to wear the spacesuit all the time.
31. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2&3?
A. What the parts of a spacesuit are. B. What astronauts wear in space.
C. Why temperatures change a lot. D. Why astronauts need spacesuits.

Parents and children regularly face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting the pocket money, learning to save, and deciding on expensive purchases. The goal of most parents is to teach their kids how to manage money wisely. The goal of most kids is getting money to spend. How can families balance these goals?
“All parents hope they’ll raise a money-savvy kid, who’ll grow up to be a financially secure adult and can use their money wisely.” says financial planner Peg Eddy. The trick, say Eddy and most experts, is letting kids learn by having a little money of their own. They will also find it empowering.
The Tidler family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids earn some. Their son, Ryan, 17, has been helping with their garden since he was 8. Now he owns his own equipment. He has been able to save $7,800. In addition, Ryan bought a dirt bike and an impressive sound system. Ryan doesn’t resent having to make his own money when other kids are given cash by their parents. “Some kids have a lot of stuff,” he says. “Some kids don’t have much.”
Talking About It
Contrary to what some parents think, many kids want to learn how to handle their money. They know they are being hit by constant (non-stop) consumer messages. They are also aware of the high cost of a college education.
Parents sometimes make the mistake when talking about money of discussing it only in terms of what kids shouldn’t do. Instead, experts say, knowing how to handle money is the best way for kids to get what they really want. That means long-term planning and saving for big expenses like college or a car or even the annual holiday gifts. It also means thinking of others by making donations to charity.
Giselle Lopez, 17, of New York City, learned the hard way. She racked up $2,000 in debt on her first credit card. Her parents refused to pay, so Giselle got a job. Then she paid the debt off slowly herself. “Now every time I use it, I know that it comes from my own pocket,” Giselle says. “That gives me a sense of responsibility for my actions.”
Different kids will have different styles when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use money doesn’t have to mean setting rigid rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their own money to consider, they can learn to set those rules themselves.
Learn Now, Save Later
Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady manages a mutual fund geared toward children and young adults. “Today we have debates about Social Security and pension plans dying out,” he says. “These young people will have much more responsibility for their financial future than past generations.”
Brady does caution kids. “They shouldn’t be consumed with money,” he says. However, they should understand basic rules for earning, saving and investing.
That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past decade, the average credit card debt of Americans ages 18 to 24 doubled, to nearly $3,000. Among high school seniors, four out of five have never taken a personal-finance class. On the other hand, nearly half have an ATM debit card, and more than a quarter have bounced a check.
32. What does “a money-savvy kid” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. A kid who is wise with money. B. A kid who is not in any danger.
C. A kid who is from a rich family. D. A kid who can save a lot of money.
33. Experts like Eddy and Brady believe in ________.
A. kids have the freedom to buy anything they want or like
B. parents shouldn’t allow their kids to use money for themselves
C. parents should use tricks when they talk about money use with kids
D. kids are more likely to learn money management skills by using money
34. Why did the writer say Giselle Lopez learned the hard way?
A. Because she took a hard money management class.
B. Because she had to pay the debt off slowly herself.
C. Because she learned a difficult way to manage money.
D. Because she is not clever and has to work hard at school.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Saving Matters! B. Class Works! C. Money Counts! D. Responsibility Rules!
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. C

Reeve’s life was saved by doctors but the fighting against his hard life was just beginning, as the actor would never be able to feel anything below his neck, breathe without help from a machine or do any physical activity on his own again.
During this time, Reeve felt like he had lost all hope. He wished that he was dead and even thought of ending his own life. It was only because of the support of his wife, family and friends that he found the hope and courage to live again.
Reeve put his heart into learning everything he could about his injuries. He took lots of exercises. Reeve never met his goal of getting back on his feet, but he made great progress. Shortly after, he managed to return to his film work by directing, producing and even starring in films. He also wrote a book about his experience and returned to his charity work. Reeve became an energetic supporter for people with back injuries and disabilities, raising millions of dollars in support of medical research. “What I do is based on powers we all have inside us and you don’t have to be a ‘superman’ to do it.” His attitude encouraged many people who were stuck in illness.“With the progress of new medical research, I’m confident that people like me would be able to walk again one day. So you can see. I’m too busy with living to think of giving up!”
His ten-year-long fighting came to an end on October 10, 2004, at the age of 52. His active performance for the disabled proved more superhuman than anything that could be dreamed up for the big screen.

【答案】例文
As we all know, it’s important to keep healthy. For example, if you have a cold and headache, you can’t study well and you have to see a doctor or get some medicine. In fact, I had a bad cough last week. I stayed in bed all day. So I couldn’t attend the mid-term test. I had to drink much water and take bitter medicine.
How to keep healthy may depend on some healthy lifestyles. For example, we can do more sports such as morning exercises, running, swimming and playing basketball. We can also eat less fast food and eat more vegetables. What’s more, we can’t stay up late every day. We should sleep early in the evening and get up early in the morning.

26. What did the writer enjoy most in the camp?
A. Sleeping in the tents. B. Playing with classmates.
C. Cooking food in the bush. D. Taking part in exciting activities.
27. What happened after the writer missed a rope in High Ropes?
A. She pulled herself up. B. She was seriously hurt.
C. She fell to the ground. D. She felt proud.
28. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. taking part in camp activities can make us proud
B. students can’t help always doing something dangerous
C. we should keep going when facing problems or difficulties
D. it’s impossible to form close friendships when people are in need

C Why temperatures change a lot. D. Why astronauts need spacesuits.
D
C A kid who is from a rich family. D. A kid who can save a lot of money.
33. Experts like Eddy and Brady believe in ________.
A. kids have the freedom to buy anything they want or like
B parents shouldn’t allow their kids to use money for themselves
C. parents should use tricks when they talk about money use with kids
D. kids are more likely to learn money management skills by using money
