Xunpu is a small fishing village in Fujian Province. Last year, a few ladies took pictures there and shared them online. In the photos, their hair was tied into buns (发髻) and they wore a wreath (花冠). There were fresh, plastic and silk flowers on the wreath. It is called “Zanhuawei”. The photos were widely spread online. Many tourists started to come to the village. In less than six months, the number of zanhua stores there grew from less than 10 to more than 150.
The tradition of wearing flowers has been a part of local life since the Tang Dynasty. The village is famous for its good seafood. When female villagers sell their seafood at the local market, they put flowers in their hair. This way, buyers can distinguish (识别) them from sellers in nearby villages.
The tradition is also seen at happy events such as weddings. Locals send out invitation cards along with flowers. In turn, their female guests wear the flowers to the event.
__★__ Kids braid (编织) their hair and put flowers on their temples (鬓). Teenagers tie their hair into a round bun and put flowers in it. Middle-aged women often wear spiral (螺旋形的) buns. They put flowers and gold ornaments (金饰) in their hair. As for elderly women, they like red flowers, headscarves and other ornaments better.
“If you put flowers in your hair in this life,” the locals believe, “you will be pretty in the next life!” In 2008, the tradition was listed as part of China’s intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).

Mushrooms are tasty and rich in healthy nutrients (营养物), which makes some people collect them in the wild. However, eating the wrong mushrooms can make you sick or even dead. Therefore, growing mushrooms yourself inside your own home is getting popular.
There are two ways to do this. You can buy a set of materials from a garden store called a “grow kit (工具包)” or you can put them together yourself.
Grow kits (GK)
Grow kits are a great way for beginners to try growing mushrooms. These grow kits include partly-grown mushroom starters, called “spawn” (菌种体). The spawn is set in soil (土壤) and is planted in its own grow box. You put the spawn in water overnight. Then you return it to the box and open it to fresh air. Water it twice a day.
Within two or three weeks, you will be eating mushrooms with more on the way. It is fun and easy.
Putting them together yourself (PTTY)
If you want a larger harvest, it will cost less to put the materials together yourself. It is easy, too.
For starters, you will need a wooden, metal, or plastic box and some soil mixed with compost (肥料) and other materials. You will also need to buy fungal spores (真菌孢子) (something like seeds).
With clean hands, fill the box with your soil and materials. Put the spores evenly over the soil substance (物质) and water it twice a day gently.
To grow quickly and effectively, the spore-topped soil material should be kept away from direct sunlight. It should be kept at or close to 21℃. Put a piece of cloth lightly over the top of the box to keep moisture (水分) in. But do not cover it tightly (紧紧地). After it was coated with mycelium (菌丝体), move the box to a cooler place — 12℃ to 15 ℃.
Mushrooms grow very quickly. With their tops fully open, they will be ready to harvest. That will be in about three to four weeks. Use a sharp, clean knife to cut them at soil level to avoid influencing nearby growth.
Do you want to taste safe and nutritious mushrooms? Grow them at home right now.
1. According to the text, what tools do we need to grow mushrooms?
① ② ③ ④ ⑤
A. ①②③④ B. ②③④⑤ C. ①②④⑤ D. ①②③⑤
2. To grow quickly and effectively, what should we do with the spore-topped soil material?
A. Keep it below 12℃. B. Keep it in the direct sun light.
C. Keep it wet but not too hot. D. Covered it with a piece of cloth tightly.
3. What can we infer from the text?
A. Mushrooms in the wild are safer and more delicious.
B. Keep the soil substance wet while growing mushrooms.
C. Choose GK if you want a larger harvest and spend less money.
D. Choose GTTY if you want to eat mushrooms in a shorter time.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A. The ways to grow mushrooms at home. B. The history of growing mushrooms at home.
C. The reason for growing mushrooms at home. D. The difficulty in growing mushrooms at home.

One day in July when I was completely well again, I put some food and water in a bag and went exploring (探究).
I walked along the coast until I got to a small river. Then I followed it across the island. The land on both sides of the river was very nice. It was flat and green and many different plants were growing there. I looked for things to eat, but I didn’t find anything. The next day I decided to go further. I was curious to see more of the green valley (山谷). I walked for many hours and finally I arrived in a place with many trees. I could see oranges and lemons on them. I also saw grapes and melons too.
“The north side of the island is better than the south,” I thought. “There are lots of things to eat. The weather is better here too. I chose the bad side for my house.”
I didn’t go back to my seaside house that night. I slept in a tree and continued exploring the next morning. Before I left that place, I filled my pockets with fruit.
“I must come back with bags and get some more,” I thought. “But I must hurry because the wet season starts in August.”
I made several more trips during the following weeks and took back as much fruit as I could. While I was there, I built a small tent to sleep in. Now I had my second house — a country house!
It rained more or less every day between the middle of August and the middle of October and I had to stay in the seaside house. But when the weather changed, I often went to my country house.
There were lots of small animals in the woods and turtles (龟) on the beach, so I was never without meat. I also found that turtle eggs were very good to eat too. I dried some of the meat in the sun and kept it for the wet season. I dried the grapes too. They were very good and I usually kept some in my pockets.
One day when I was standing on the top of a hill, I saw land far away. “Was it the mainland or an island?” I asked myself. Another day I caught a parrot and took it home with me. I called it Poll and I taught it to speak. The first word it learnt to say was its name. Then I taught it to say “Robinson”. It was strange to hear another voice after so many months. Poll was a very good company (陪伴) and relieved (缓解) my loneliness.
—Adapted from Robinson Crusoe

B. The island Robinson lived on was small with little food to eat
C. The wet season ended at the beginning of October

After all these experiences, I learned a lot and began to grow up. One autumn night, when my parents and I returned from my uncle’s house, my mother said that we might leave for Australia soon. I was crying on the bus, and some people were turning around to look at me. I could not stop the thought of never hearing the morning radio programmes in school again.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving, I couldn’t wait to think about all the places I was going to see — the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving was hardly in my head then.
The following years taught me to think all was going to turn out well, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years, I had to study in three schools because of my family moves. I did not know very clearly what I was or what I should be. Father died and Mother then married again. And things became even more complex (复杂). More than two years passed, my stepfather and I got used to each other at last. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times”.
My responsibilities in the family increased since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, taught my mother to fill out forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers (移民局官员), took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there…
I have learned that all common troubles go away at last if we don’t give up. My life will turn out all right, even though it will be so hard.

七、阅读与表达
Fine, I’ll just do it all myself! I thought as I stomped (跺脚) away. My friends and I were trying to make the best cardboard town to play in. We had boxes that we were turning into stores and playgrounds and all kinds of other fun things! We weren’t getting along very well, though. I could hear them talking as I was walking away.
“Wow, I didn’t think he’d get so angry,” Katie said.
“This was supposed to be fun,” said Max. “Johnny can’t do it all by himself. Maybe if we give him some space, he’ll want us to help again.”
Yeah, right. Since it was my idea, I would just do it without them. The only problem was that I wanted it done before Thanksgiving so that I could show all of my family when they came over. When Thanksgiving was two weeks away, I began to know that it was just too big a job. I couldn’t make the buildings out of boxes and put them around the town, and decorate them all by myself. It was taking too long. I guess that’s why people work together. When we each had a job, this was fun and went a lot faster. Maybe I should say sorry to Katie and Max. They were just trying to help and have fun with me.
The next day at school I said sorry to Katie and Max. “I don’t know why I got so angry. Building a town was just supposed to be fun. Will you come back to my house today to complete our town?” I asked.
“Sure, Johnny,” they said. We all took on a role and the town was done in no time. It was great!
