Huang Xuhua, chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines, left us on February 6th, 2025. But his great deeds and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China’s way forward.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong province Huang was the third child of his parents. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. The memories of the hard times of China under foreign attacks made him study hard. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1949, right after his graduation. In 1958, he was chosen to join the research team tasked with designing China’s first nuclear submarine.
The challenges were overwhelming. Yet, Huang accepted it without hesitation. For the next three decades, Huang disappeared from the public life. He couldn’t reveal his work even to his closest family. The team members didn’t have any computers or digital calculators, so they used abacuses (算盘) and rulers to solve problems. To ensure the right calculation results, they were divided into three groups to make the calculations at the same time. They faced numerous failures and moments of despair, but they never gave up.
In 1970, their hard work paid off. China’s first nuclear submarine was successfully launched, making China the fifth country in the world to possess this technology. But Huang’s name was kept secret until 1987 when he finally reunited with his 93-year-old mother.
Due to his outstanding contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honor in 2019.
4. How long did Huang Xuhua work in secret on the nuclear submarine project?
A. About 10 years. B. About 20 years. C. About 30 years. D. About 40 years.
5. What was the main challenge Huang Xuhua faced in his work?
A. Language barriers with foreign experts.
B. Lack of support from the government.
C. Opposition from his family members.
D. Limited resources and complete secrecy.
6. What can we learn from Huang Xuhua’s story?
A. Technological progress requires international cooperation.
B. Personal success is more important than national interests.
C. Courage means persisting through difficulties for a greater cause.
D. Scientific research should always be conducted in public.
7. The most suitable title for this passage would be ________.
A. The Overnight Success of China’s Nuclear Program.

If your day starts with a harsh alarm sound, you might want to rethink your wake-up routine. New research from the University of Virginia’s School of Nursing suggests that the way you’re waking up could be putting unnecessary stress on your heart.
Nursing doctoral student Yeonsu Kim studied 32 participants and found that being forced awake — like by a loud phone alarm — can lead to a significant morning blood pressure surge. This happens when your body is suddenly shifted from sleep to wakefulness. And it was found to be 74% higher in participants who were awakened by an alarm after five hours of sleep compared to those who woke up naturally. And that’s no small concern — morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular (心血管的) risks, including stroke and heart attack.
The increase in blood pressure activates your sympathetic nervous system — the same system that sets off the “fight or flight” response. That can lead to a rapid heartbeat, anxiety, exhaustion, and even physical symptoms like headaches and nosebleeds.
The good news? There are better, healthier ways to greet the day. Instead of relying on harsh alarms, many people are turning to gentler methods — and research backs them up. One popular option is a gradual light alarm, also known as a sunrise alarm clock. These devices imitate the rising sun by slowly increasing in brightness over a set period of time. The gentle light helps signal your body to reduce melatonin (褪黑激素) production and transition into wakefulness more naturally, reducing dizziness and morning stress.
There are also alarm apps that use soft music or nature sounds that gradually get louder, helping you wake without shocking your system. A 2020 study even found that melodic sounds — like a song you can sing along with — help reduce sleep inertia, a sleepy, heavy feeling that can linger for hours after waking up.
Small changes can make a big difference in how your body starts the day and your heart will thank you for it!
8. What physical symptoms can be caused by activating the sympathetic nervous system?
A. Nervousness and tiredness. B. Slower heartbeat.
C. Improved sleep quality. D. Reduced melatonin levels.
9. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. The dangers of using traditional alarm clocks.
B. The importance of getting enough sleep every night.
C. The introduction and benefits of gradual light alarms.
D. How melatonin affects our sleep quality.
10. What can be inferred from the research findings mentioned in the passage?
A. People who wake up naturally never experience morning blood pressure surges.
B. Gradual waking methods may lower the risk of heart-related diseases.
C. Reducing melatonin production immediately improves cardiovascular health.
D. Loud alarms are the primary cause of strokes and heart attacks worldwide.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To persuade us to stop using alarms.
B. To criticize modern sleep habits.
C. To compare different types of alarm sounds.
D. To explain the dangers of sudden wake-up methods
A 9. C 10. B 11. D

根据第二段中“And that’s no small concern — morning blood pressure surges have been linked to serious cardiovascular risks, including stroke and heart attack.(这是一个不小的问题 —— 早晨血压飙升与严重的心血管风险有关,包括中风和心脏病发作。)”以及第四段中“Instead of relying on harsh alarms, many people are turning to gentler methods——and research backs them up. One popular option is a gradual light alarm, also known as a sunrise alarm clock. These devices imitate the rising sun by slowly increasing in brightness over a set period of time. The gentle light helps signal your body to reduce melatonin production and transition into wakefulness more naturally, reducing dizziness and morning stress.(许多人不再依赖严厉的警报,而是转向更温和的方法——研究也支持了他们的观点。一种流行的选择是渐进式光线闹钟,也被称为日出闹钟。这些装置模仿太阳升起,在一段固定的时间内缓慢增加亮度。柔和的光线可以帮助你的身体减少褪黑素的产生,更自然地过渡到清醒状态,减少头晕和早晨的压力。)”可推断出,渐进式唤醒方式可能会降低患心脏病相关疾病的风险。故选B项。

Carved into the cliffs above the Dachuan River, the Mogao Caves, south-east of the Dunhuang oasis, Gansu province, contain the largest, richest, and longest used treasure house of Buddhist art in the world. It was first constructed in 366 AD and represents the great achievement of Buddhist art from the 4th to the 14th century. Four hundred and ninety-two caves are presently preserved, housing about 45,000 square meters of murals (壁画) and more than 2,000 painted sculptures. Cave 302 of the Sui Dynasty contains one of the oldest and most vivid scenes of cultural exchanges along the Silk Road, showing a camel pulling a cart typical of trade missions of that period.
As evidence of the evolution of Buddhist art in the northwest region of China, the Mogao Caves are of unmatched historical value. These works provide an abundance of vivid materials depicting various aspects of medieval (中世纪的) politics, economics, culture, arts, religion, ethnic relations, and daily dress in western China. Many of these masterpieces are creations of an unparalleled aesthetic (美学的) talent.
The discovery of the Library Cave at the Mogao Caves in 1990, together with the tens of thousands of manuscripts and relics it contained, has been acclaimed as the world’s greatest discovery of ancient Oriental (东方的) culture. This significant heritage provides invaluable reference for studying the complex history of ancient China and Central Asia.
The Mogao Caves were included on the World Heritage List in 1987. At the state level, China has put all World Heritage Sites under top-level protection. In 1961, the Mogao Caves were listed as one of the State Priority Protected Sites by the State Council and were put under the protection of national laws, including the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Protection of Cultural Relics. The Administrative Institution of the Mogao Caves has been cooperating with international counterparts (同行) to study conservation and site management and looks forward to continuing its work in preserving the heritage of the site.
12. What can we infer from Cave 302 of the Sui Dynasty?
A. It is important for the study of ancient craftsmanship.
B. It’s important for the research of the history of Central Asia.
C. It shows the evolution of Buddhist art in ancient China.
D. It has great value for the study of the history of the Silk Road.
13. What does the underlined word “depicting” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

How to Deal with Impossible People
Most people know someone who seems to make every situation a negative and unmanageable one. ___16___, as they likely don’t see a problem with their behavior. Here are tips to help you navigate interactions with these people.
Avoid getting defensive. Stay calm, and be aware that you will never win in an argument with impossible people — they are referred to as “impossible”for a reason. In their mind, you are the problem. ___17___. They’ve already decided that your opinion doesn’t matter and your defence is a decorative evidence.
Adjust your strategy. ___18___, so treat it like a game. Learn the impossible person’s strategy, and develop counter strategies ahead of time. Eventually you’ll find what works and what doesn’t, plus you’ll probably feel better as you realize you’ re three steps ahead, outwitting (智胜) them at every turn. Just remember your ultimate goal is to help free yourself mentally, not become the person’s master.
___19___. Impossible people offer valuable life experiences. After dealing with them, you will be able to get along with most other people more easily. Try to keep perspective, and realize that what may seem crazy to you may be another person’s only way of coping. Try to view these interactions as a way to build strengths such as flexibility, grace, and tolerance.
Watch out for picking up impossible people’s characteristics. You tend to pick up on the behavior of those around you. For this reason, you could find yourself adopting the very characteristics that you dislike by accident. You may engage in the same illogical behavior in response to the impossible person. ___20___.
A. Accept the situation
B. Consider what you can learn
C. Catch yourself when you start to do this
D. Sometimes you can’t leave the situation
E. So nothing you say can convince them to see your side of the story
F. Pointing out that these people are difficult and demanding won’t help
G. An impossible person is convinced that they have already made a mistake
F 17. E 18. D 19. B 20. C

根据上文“Most people know someone who seems to make every situation a negative and unmanageable one.(大多数人都认识一些似乎会把每种情况都变得消极且难以处理的人。)”以及下文 “as they likely don’t see a problem with their behavior.(因为他们可能看不到自己行为存在的问题。)”
根据上文“Stay calm, and be aware that you will never win in an argument with impossible people — they are referred to as “impossible” for a reason. In their mind, you are the problem.(保持冷静,并意识到在与难相处的人的争论中你永远不会赢—— 他们被称为“难相处的人”是有原因的。在他们心里,你才是问题所在。)”可知,此处讲述与难相处的人争论时的情况,由此可推断,此空应阐述与难相处的人争论时的情况,E选项“So nothing you say can convince them to see your side of the story(所以你说的任何话都无法说服他们站在你的立场看问题)”承接上文,进一步说明了与他们争论时的结果,符合语境。故选E项。
【18题详解】
根据上文“Adjust your strategy.(调整你的策略。)”以及下文“so treat it like a game.(所以把它当作一场游戏。)”
根据下文“Impossible people offer valuable life experiences. After dealing with them, you will be able to get along with most other people more easily. Try to keep perspective, and realize that what may seem crazy to you may be another person’s only way of coping. Try to view these interactions as a way to build strengths such as flexibility, grace, and tolerance.(难相处的人提供了宝贵的人生经验。
根据上文“For this reason, you could find yourself adopting the very characteristics that you dislike by accident. You may engage in the same illogical behavior in response to the impossible person.(出于这个原因,你可能会发现自己意外地采用了你不喜欢的那些特性。你可能会以同样不合逻辑的行为来回应那个难相处的人。)”可知,此处讲述要注意避免沾染难相处的人的不良特性,C选项“Catch yourself when you start to do this(当你开始这样做的时候要及时察觉自己)”中的do this指的是上文的“adopting the very characteristics that you dislike by accident.”,起到了总结上文的作用。

Waking up, I looked at the overcast sky, thought a bit and then decided to go to work after all. This was two years ago, when I worked at a bank. As I travelled from my house, the rain kept advancing. I reached office quite smoothly, but a few hours later, our phones started buzzing with news of flooding in various parts of the city.
Looking out of the window, my colleagues and I found that the steady drizzle had grown into a downpour. We got a bit nervous, since none of us in the city have forgotten the city’s worst floods a decade ago.
At about 12.30 p.m., after an alert from the city government, the bank let the staff leave early. Some colleagues, who had already left, called to say that they were stranded(滞留). The train services had been blocked and there were other means of transportation available either. A senior colleague, who happened to live in the same district, offered me a lift in his car. I agreed happily, and so did other colleagues, since it would have been crazy to walk into the driving rain.
The rain poured down continuously, with waist-high flood soon on the road. In the midway, the rainwater reached our car’s engine. We had no option but to park nearby. The only dry place we found was under a giant tree. We also spotted a tea stall nearby and got ourselves some much-needed tea and refreshments.
All along, I got anxious phone calls from my wife and parents, who were tracking the flood situation on TV. We looked up weather updates on our mobile phones and got more and more tense—home seemed far away. If it had not been for my portable(便携的)power bank, all our phones would have been dead.
Our train of thoughts was suddenly interrupted by a raised voice. We looked up and found a lady calling out from the balcony of a building behind us, “Please come in and make yourselves comfortable. How long will you stand out there?” She shouted out. We thanked her, but continued to wait.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
After half an hour or so, I felt a touch on my shoulder.

We didn’t want further favors, but the family seemed to sense our must to spend the night.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After half an hour or so, I felt a touch on my shoulder. A lady living nearby came with her brother. They persuaded us to follow them. We were pleased to meet Bhosale family. Grateful for everything, we assured them that we would leave as soon as the waters receded. However, the family insisted that we have dinner that was being cooked for us. Much to our surprise, we met around 12 other people, who had been accommodated just like we were.
We didn’t want further favors, but the family seemed to sense our must to spend the night. Despite our hesitation, they brought in carpets and mats, spread them out and asked us make ourselves comfortable. We were simply touched by their kindness. At about 4 am., the flood waters finally started to recede. Extremely relieved at this, we started heading out. Not wanting to disturb our sleeping hosts, we quietly slipped a thank-you note under their door and left.

Huang Xuhua, chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines, left us on February 6th, 2025. But his great deeds and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China’s way forward.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong province, Huang was the third child of his parents.
C Opposition from his family members.
B. Thirty Years of Silent Dedication.
C. The Life of a Famous Scientist.
D. How to Build a Nuclear Submarine.

There are also alarm apps that use soft music or nature sounds that gradually get louder helping you wake without shocking your system. A 2020 study even found that melodic sounds — like a song you can sing along with — help reduce sleep inertia, a sleepy, heavy feeling that can linger for hours after waking up.
Small changes can make a big difference in how your body starts the day and your heart will thank you for it!

At about 12.30 p.m. after an alert from the city government, the bank let the staff leave early.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
After half an hour or so, I felt a touch on my shoulder.
