Jim Glaub and Dylan Parker had barely turned the key in their new Manhattan apartment on 22nd Street when the previous outgoing renter tossed them a last-minute heads-up: “Letters addressed to Santa come to the apartment. It had been coming for years and no one knows why.”
They settled into their new home, and for the first two years, only a few letters arrived — asking “Santa” for gifts they could not otherwise afford: Toys, coats, a doll. Then in the months leading to Christmas 2022, the mailbox overflowed every day.
They wrote back and bought what they could, but the endless wishes foundered on the rock of their tight budgets. But one night, when they threw a Christmas party, guests noticed the hundreds of letters they’d yet to act upon hidden in the corner of their dining room and asked about them. “I told them the story,” Glaub says. “Many were like, ‘I’ll take a letter. I’ll fulfill it!’”
And so was born Miracle on 22nd Street, a community-based volunteer organization, which then started a website and a Facebook page. Families posted wishes; donors signed up as “elves” and bought gifts, each parcel tagged with a note signed “Elf Maya,” “Elf Luis,” or simply “Someone who still believes.”
Letters from around the country typically request popular items, such as Paw Patrol for little kids, makeup and bikes for older ones. Yet some letters were heartbreaking: “Dear Santa, help my younger brother in the wheelchair walk again.” That’s a tough task for any elf. But Miracle did send the children gift cards and a kind note.
Last year alone, the Miracle helped more than 1800 homes. A mother wrote on Facebook: “You helped give this newly single momma of 4 the best present. You gave my kids smiles after everything we’d lost.”
Now putting in the long hours to help the families is what it’s all about for Glaub. “It’s part of Christmas for me,” he says, “It’s the same for the elves and families. They look forward to it. Not to do it would be very sad for a lot of people. It wouldn’t be Christmas without it.”
24. What does the underlined phrase “foundered on the rock” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Were inspired by. B. Were beaten by.
C. Piled up on. D. Gave way to.
25. What critical change happened at the Christmas party?
A. The burden was ended.
B. The letters’ origin emerged.
C. A plan was publicly announced.
D. More people determined to help.
26. How does Miracle on 22nd Street help families in need?
A. It sends a parcel to every child.
B. It raises money for poor families.
C. It meets people’s wishes through donors.
D. It gives medical help to disabled children.
27. What is a characteristic of the Miracle?

根据第三段中“They wrote back and bought what they could, but the endless wishes foundered on the rock of their tight budgets.(他们回信并尽力购买了一些,但无尽的愿望终究因囊中羞涩而foundered on the rock)”可知,他们回信并购买了力所能及的东西,但终究因为预算紧张,愿望无法实现,被现实打败。由此推知,“foundered on the rock”意为“被击败”,与B项“Were beaten by”意思相近。
根据第四段中“But one night, when they threw a Christmas party, guests noticed the hundreds of letters they’d yet to act upon hidden in the corner of their dining room and asked about them. “I told them the story,” Glaub says. “Many were like, ‘I’ll take a letter. I’ll fulfill it!’”(但有一天晚上,当他们举办圣诞派对时,客人们注意到他们藏在餐厅角落里的数百封尚未处理的信件,并询问了这些信件的情况。Glaub说:“我告诉了他们这个故事。很多人都说:‘我拿一封信。我会实现它的!’”)”可知,在圣诞派对上,更多的人决定帮忙。故选D项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“And so was born Miracle on 22nd Street, a community-based volunteer organization, which then started a website and a Facebook page. Families posted wishes; donors signed up as “elves” and bought gifts, each parcel tagged with a note signed “Elf Maya,” “Elf Luis,” or simply “Someone who still believes.”(于是,“22街的奇迹”诞生了,这是一个基于社区的志愿者组织,随后开设了一个网站和一个Facebook页面。家庭发布愿望;捐赠者注册成为“精灵”并购买礼物,每个包裹上都贴着一张便条,上面写着“精灵玛雅”、“精灵路易斯”,或者简单地写着“仍然相信的人”)”可知,“22街的奇迹”通过捐赠者帮助有需要的家庭实现愿望。故选C项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Now putting in the long hours to help the families is what it’s all about for Glaub. “It’s part of Christmas for me,” he says, “It’s the same for the elves and families. They look forward to it. Not to do it would be very sad for a lot of people. It wouldn’t be Christmas without it.”(现在,现在,对Glaub来说,投入长时间帮助这些家庭就是他的全部。他说:“这对我来说是圣诞节的一部分,对精灵和家庭来说也是一样。他们期待着它。如果不这样做,对很多人来说会很伤心。没有它就不是圣诞节了。”)”可知,“22街的奇迹”成了圣诞节的一部分,没有它圣诞节就不完整,说明它成为了一年一度的珍贵传统。故选B项。

A phenomenon called ‘false autumn’ is raising concerns among conservationists about its potential impacts on wildlife in the coming months, a charity says.
“Some trees are going brown as a survival strategy to minimize water loss and conserve vital nutrients,” Drazen Nesic, a nature photographer, put it. The Devon Wildlife Trust said trees had been casting off leaves about two months early because of recent hot weather. It also said usual wild foods for birds and mammals may reduce as a result — with berries and nuts having been appearing much earlier than usual, with many reported to be smaller and “less juicy” than normal. For hibernating (冬眠) species like the protected Hazel Dormouse (睡鼠), these changes could prove particularly dangerous. “With decreased food supplies, many animals may enter winter without adequate fat reserves essential for surviving hibernation,” noted a DWT spokesperson. The organization has documented cases where dormice weighed 15 — 20% less than normal for this time of year.
Staff in DWT said that, despite some recent rain, people should put out regular supplies of water in gardens, plus high-energy foods, to help wildlife. To relieve these impacts, conservationists recommend creating wildlife-friendly habitats by planting native bushes and leaving fallen leaves as natural protection. Additionally, setting up extra feeding stations with nutrient-rich foods like sunflower seeds can provide crucial support. Community-led initiatives, such as wildlife watering programs, are also being encouraged to help species adapt to these shifting conditions.
Steve Hussey, from the Trust, commented: “Nature’s timing is everything for our wildlife. The climate crisis is bringing with it seasonal weather patterns which our wildlife is just not adapted to. Our long, hot summer and the false autumn will have a knock-on for many species right into the real autumn months and beyond.”
28. Why are trees dropping leaves earlier than normal this year according to the Devon Wildlife Trust?
A. Trees faced unusual heat stresses.
B. People destroyed the leaves for gardening.
C. Heavy rainfall damaged the leaves.
D. Mammals ate up the premature leaves.
29. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. Wild animals hibernate earlier for not storing enough fat.
B. Trees are changing color to produce more food for animals.
C. DWT is responsible for providing food supplies for animals.
D. Wild foods are facing a lack of production in hot weather.
30. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Complicated steps for gardeners to follow.
B. Encouragement to start community projects.
C. Various measures to aid wildlife.
D. The success of current conservation efforts.
31. Which can best describe Steve Hussey’s attitude towards the climate crisis?
A. Optimistic. B. Concerned. C. Indifferent. D. Skeptical.
A 29. D 30. C 31. B

根据第二段中“The Devon Wildlife Trust said trees had been casting off leaves about two months early because of recent hot weather. (德文郡野生动物信托基金会表示,由于近期高温天气,树木提前约两个月落叶)”可知,今年树木的落叶比往年早是因为树木面临异常高温压力。故选A项。
根据第二段中“It also said usual wild foods for birds and mammals may reduce as a result — with berries and nuts having been appearing much earlier than usual, with many reported to be smaller and “less juicy” than normal. (该机构还表示,鸟类和哺乳动物通常食用的野生食物可能会因此减少——浆果和坚果出现的时间比平时早得多,据报道,许多浆果和坚果比平时更小,“汁液更少”)”可推知,炎热天气下,野生食物面临着产量不足的问题。故选D项。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Staff in DWT said that, despite some recent rain, people should put out regular supplies of water in gardens, plus high-energy foods, to help wildlife.
根据最后一段中Steve Hussey所说的话“Nature’s timing is everything for our wildlife. The climate crisis is bringing with it seasonal weather patterns which our wildlife is just not adapted to. Our long, hot summer and the false autumn will have a knock-on for many species right into the real autumn months and beyond. (大自然的时机决定了野生动物的一切。气候危机带来了季节性的天气模式,我们的野生动物还不适应。我们漫长而炎热的夏季和虚假的秋季将对许多物种产生连锁反应,一直到真正的秋季甚至更长时间)”可知,他强调气候危机对野生动物的负面影响,体现担忧的态度。故选B项。
D
Considerable research shows coffee can dramatically affect your body and brain. Studies link it to reduced risks of stroke, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, and it’s also found to boost memory and teamwork.
But what if you need to solve a problem? Turns out coffee is good for that too. Depending on the type of problem you need to solve.
Say a customer’s delivery date is in danger of being late. You need an idea. So you brainstorm. Any idea. Every idea. Thinking outside the box. Thinking with no box. That’s divergent (发散的) thinking: free-flowing, unplanned, unstructured idea creation.
If you need lots of ideas, coffee won’t help. But if you just need one great idea? If you just need to determine the best answer?
A study published in Consciousness and Cognition found one cup of coffee boosts problem-solving via convergent (聚合的) thinking: determining the best answer to a question. Even though participants didn’t come up with more ideas, they solved problems faster. Researchers think this may be due to caffeine speeding up mental processing.
We found that participants who consumed about one 12-ounce cup of coffee showed significantly enhanced problem-solving abilities.
Why? The underlying mechanism is less clear. Research shows caffeine increases awareness, improves watchfulness, enhances concentration and lifts mood. All those factors improve your problem-solving abilities.
Drinking a cup of coffee clearly works, but just keep in mind that a little more coffee is good, but a lot more may not be. Also consider how much coffee you drink regularly. A 2012 study found that within three days of consistent caffeine consumption, your body builds up tolerance, which means your body gets used to it, and the effect weakens, including your problem-solving ability. Fortunately, if you cut back on coffee for a few days — around seven days or so — the original effects of coffee usually start to come back gradually.
So as with most things in life, consider the timing. See coffee as an occasional focus, mood, and analysis aid, especially when you need to solve a particularly difficult problem.
32. Which of the following best describes the effect of drinking coffee?
A. It effectively prevents type 2 diabetes.
B. It helps divergent thinking a lot.
C. It works better for certain types of problems.
D. It has insignificant influence on the brain and body.
33. According to the study in paragraph 5, what is the key finding about coffee?
A. It enhances the speed of convergent thinking.
B. It inspires creativity in brainstorming sessions.
C. It facilitates generating a wider range of ideas.
D. It has little effect on the speed of problem-solving.
34. What does the author think of coffee consumption?
A. Once developed, coffee tolerance won’t fade.
B. Grabbing coffee will fail you when you feel down.
C. Take amount and timing into account.
D. The benefits of coffee outweigh its drawbacks.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Coffee: a magic pill for Brain
B. Coffee: you can never drink too much
C. Coffee: self-control is key
D. Coffee: a helper in Problem-Solving
C 33. A 34. C 35. D

根据倒数第二段中“Drinking a cup of coffee clearly works, but just keep in mind that a little more coffee is good, but a lot more may not be. Also consider how much coffee you drink regularly.(喝一杯咖啡显然有效,但请记住,多喝一点咖啡是好的,但喝太多可能就不好了。还要考虑你经常喝多少咖啡)”和最后一段“So as with most things in life, consider the timing. See coffee as an occasional focus, mood, and analysis aid, especially when you need to solve a particularly difficult problem.(所以,就像生活中的大多数事情一样,要考虑时机。把咖啡看作是偶尔的注意力、情绪和分析的辅助工具,尤其是当你需要解决一个特别困难的问题时)”可知,作者认为喝咖啡时要考虑数量和时机。故选C项。
35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第二段“But what if you need to solve a problem? Turns out coffee is good for that too. This not only enriches your vocabulary but also helps you remember and use new words more effectively.
·Don’t forget the small stuff!
Small errors can have a big impact on your writing. ____40____ Also, avoid using “text speak” such as “u” for “you” or “4” for “for,” especially in formal writing. While these shortcuts are acceptable in casual conversations, they are inappropriate when trying to demonstrate your writing skills.
A Expand your vocabulary.
B. Read more books to improve your writing.

Anyunna Phillips was a kindergarten teacher who taught in Atlanta. From the first week of the new semester, she noticed a quiet unease in her classroom. Many kids hid themselves under the books when called on, their little hands trembling even if they knew the answer. None seemed more withdrawn than Bob. The thin boy with curly hair would press himself into the corner of his desk during group activities, eyes fixed on his shoes, and when Miss Phillips tried to ask him a simple question, he’d mumble so softly she could hardly catch the words.
Determined to light a spark, Miss Phillips spent a weekend working out a plan. On Monday, the class opened their eyes wide when they saw a full-length mirror placed near the reading corner, its frame wrapped in glittery paper and covered with sticky notes: “You’re brave,” “Your voice matters,” “You’re amazing just as you are.” “This is our Magic Mirror,” she announced, clapping her hands. “Every morning, we’ll take turns looking at ourselves here and saying something good — something true.”
At first, the mirror stayed mostly untouched. Kids looked at it shyly during breaks but ran away when Miss Phillips glanced over. Bob avoided it entirely, as if the glass might bite. So she started small: she stood in front of it herself, grinning, and said, “I’m proud to be your teacher!” Then she picked the boldest girl, Mia, to join her. Mia giggled, but when she met her own eyes in the mirror, she whispered, “I’m smart.” Miss Phillips gave her a thumbs up and big hug, which made her and other kids encouraged a lot.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Para 1. Slowly, the children began to change.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2. For Bob, Miss Phillips’ efforts eventually paid off, too.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 1
Slowly, the children began to change. Each morning, an increasing number of kids would actively line up by the mirror. As they said uplifting things to their reflections, their once-hesitant voices gradually grew firm. Mia took on the role of a little “cheerleader”, using a gentle push or a bright smile to encourage her classmates. Kids raised their hands more readily in class, eager to share their thoughts, and group activities were filled with more laughter and participation. Bob, though still quiet, would occasionally look up during discussions.
Para 2
For Bob, Miss Phillips’ efforts eventually paid off, too. Standing before the mirror, Bob took a deep breath and, in a clear and unwavering voice, said, “I’m brave.” After the shock wore off, cheers and applause erupted. Tears welled up in Miss Phillips’ eyes as she hugged Bob tightly. From that day on, Bob completely changed. He joined group games, answered questions aloud, and even helped a struggling classmate. As Miss Phillips watched her students thrive, she knew that sowing the seeds of confidence would help them grow into fearless and kind-hearted souls.

B The letters’ origin emerged.
A. Relying on stable government funding.
B Becoming a cherished yearly tradition.
C. Serving only the local Manhattan community.
D. Requiring complex application procedures.

A Trees faced unusual heat stresses.
D. Skeptical.

How to Improve Your English Writing
Becoming proficient in English writing is a journey that demands time and consistent practice. ____36____ Here are some practical suggestions to assist you in making significant progress.
·Write regularly.
To excel in any skill, repetition is key. Thus, make it a daily habit to write. It could be a journal entry, a brief story, or simply writing down your thoughts regularly. ____37____
·Get it checked.
____38____ To truly grow, you need an external perspective to point out your mistakes. There are two excellent ways to achieve it. You can turn to online resources, like italki.com and lang-8 or ask a friend, who can check for grammar, spelling, and overall structure.
·____39____
The difference between a basic and an advanced writer often lies in vocabulary. A six-year-old and a 20-year-old might both use correct grammar, but the 20-year-old has a wider range of words. So whenever you run into a useful phrase or word, write it down. And then make a point to use it.
A. Expand your vocabulary.
B. Read more books to improve your writing.
C. Writing on your own is just a part of the process.
D. It helps you express yourself more comfortably and fluently over time.
E. Spelling mistakes are unimportant in writing as long as the main idea is clear.
F. However, with the right strategies, you can steadily enhance your capabilities.
G. Incorrect spacing or punctuation mistakes may make your text difficult to read.
