Four Dream Holidays
★See a Penguin
This is a once-in-a-lifetime holiday in the snow and ice of the Antarctica. You can see animals and birds you only see on TV or in zoos. The trip starts in South Africa and finishes in Western Australia. You travel on a Russian ship, Kapitan Khlebnikov, and the holiday lasts for just under a month.
★Go on Safari
This holiday is a trip to see wild animals with a difference. You travel by helicopter (直升飞机) over parts of Kenya, listening to music as you fly, and then you sleep under the African stars in a comfortable bed. There’s another trip in a hot-air balloon, which gives you a second chance to see wild animals. The best moment is the Elephant Watch in Samburu, where your experienced guide can tell you all about these amazing animals.
★Live like Robinson Crusoe
If you dream of life on a quiet island, then this is the holiday for you. The island of Quilalea is off the coast of Mozambique and you can only see turtles (海龟) and a few tourists there. You may live like Robinson Crusoe: watch the turtles, go fishing, or travel in a boat to another island to have a picnic.
★Fly High
This is probably the most expensive holiday in the world. You can go on a flight into space and travel around the Earth in a spaceship — if you have the money! The only problem with this holiday is the six-day training course before you take the trip. You travel above the Earth for between 30 and 90 minutes and you get a beautiful view of our green and blue planet.
21. What can you see in Go on Safari holiday?
A. Outer space. B. Wild animals. C. Sea turtles. D. Russian ships.
22. If you prefer a holiday on a quiet island, which would be the best choice?
A. See a Penguin. B. Go on Safari.
C. Live like Robinson Crusoe. D. Fly High.
23. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain dreams. B. To share geography knowledge.
C. To introduce different animals. D. To attract tourists.
B
Dear Daisy,
Phew! I’m so glad the day is over. I’m really tired, but my first day at school went well.
First of all, we met outside the school building. I was very anxious (焦虑的) because my primary school only had 300 students but in the middle school there are about 1,300. What a difference! The older students are really big. I felt so small waiting there in front of the school.
The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names out to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs Black. She took us to our classroom. It’s on the 5th floor. We aren’t allowed to use the lift! I couldn’t believe it.
We spent all morning with Mrs Black looking at our timetables. Everyone in the school had a different timetable. I’m worried that I’ll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room.
Lunchtime was OK. I had salad, fish and fruit, which were quite delicious and healthy, and then I went to play football with some of the other boys. They were all friendly and I don’t think it will take me long to make friends.
After lunch we started lessons. I had maths and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece (希腊) . That looked interesting. I have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived, so I’m going to do an Internet search and look it up in the library.
So far so good. I am quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I’ve got science. I hate science!
Yours,
Jason

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related (有关的) to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).
Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!”
28. What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Interest. B. Responsibility. C. Dislike. D. Misunderstanding.
29. What first made the author look forward to math class?
A. Mr. A’s attitude.
B. Her interest in math.
C. Her friends’ encouragement.
D. The top achievers in her class.
30. How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A?
A. It was straight.
B. It was awkward.
C. It was challenging.
D. It was impressive.
31. How did the author change in math?
A. She made slow progress.
B. She fell in love with math.
C. She became a straight-A math student.
D. She became comfortable with difficult math questions.
D
As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience, a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!
With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced decisions that will help shape your future. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.
Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. You will probably want to be independent. But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. Your family have been with you since you came into this world.
It is also perfectly natural in this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. Choose your friends wisely. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens. This period is part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey and there will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not ever see all of your classmates again.
You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely!
32. As far as the author is concerned, teenage years are ________.
A. a period of complete freedom.
B. too hard for young people to get through.
C. an important time for the young to make the right choices.
D. an important period for young students to leave their parents.
33. What does the author suggest about your family?
A. They will choose your friends for you.
B. You should depend on them for everything.
C. They will make all important decisions for you.
D. You should try not to shut them out of your life.
34. What can we infer about the author’s view on friendship?
A. Friends should be chosen by family members.
B. Quantity of friends is more important than quality.
C. One should only maintain friendships from childhood.
D. True friends remain supportive through all circumstances.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Choices in Life. B. Becoming a Young Adult.

She stood beside a stand (摊位) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes… but I don’t have money on me” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,”said the man, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless (无情的) compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb (呆滞的)with shock; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered (饱经风霜的) hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted (感激的;蒙恩的), but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

A
Four Dream Holidays

Dear Daisy,
Yours,
Jason

C
C 29. A 30. D 31. A
根据上文“Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student.(从中学起我就不擅长数学。高中的时候,上课变得越来越难了,我离数学老师的梦想学生更远了。)”可知,从中学到高中,作者越来越学不会数学。画线词所在句中的“So”表明上下文为因果关系,作者学不好数学,所以“不喜欢”数学。划线词aversion与dislike意思相近,意为“不喜欢,厌恶”。故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion(热情) not only for math but for teaching.(很明显,A老师不仅对数学有着真正的热情,而且对教学也有着真诚的热情。)”和“Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the ‘I can’t’ student.(他鼓励每一个学生,从最优秀的学生到‘我不能’的学生。)” 故选A。
根据第四段中的“My classmates began to do the same, and it became ‘cool’ to have lunch and talk with Mr. A.(我的同学们也开始这样做,和A老师一起吃午饭和聊天变得很‘酷’。)”
根据最后一段中的“Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb.(虽然我的故事不是一鸣惊人的那种故事,我也没有成为一名数学全优的学生,但我的努力确实开始有了回报,我的成绩也开始慢慢攀升。)” 故选A。
D
As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience, a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!

Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not ever see all of your classmates again.

根据第二段“This is a time to be well informed about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced decisions that will help shape your future. (这是一个充分了解自身选择的时期,以便做出健康均衡的决定,助力塑造未来。)”和第五段“The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely! (从现在开始,你所做的选择就是你的选择。所以做出正确的选择对你来说很重要。生活是为了活着。明智地享受你的生活!)”可知青少年时期是年轻人做出正确选择的重要时刻。故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But try not to shut your family out of your life. (但尽量不要将家人排除在你的生活之外。)”可知作者建议你不应该把他们排除在你的生活之外,故选D。

【36题详解】
根据后文“When you go to a new school, you might worry that you don’t know anyone.(当你去一所新学校时,你可能会担心你谁都不认识。)”可知,此处是讲适应新学校可能会很困难,和前文“School is a place where a child learns to succeed.(学校是孩子学习成功的地方。)” But adjusting to a new school can be difficult.(但是适应一所新学校可能很困难)切合文意,同时引起下文。故选B。
根据小标题“Getting to Know the School(了解学校)”和前文“Before you start the school, go with your parents to visit the school.(在你开始上学之前,和你的父母一起去参观学校。)” Find out where your classroom is, as well as other important places.(找出你的教室和其他重要的地方)切合文意。故选D。

根据下文“Take part in activities. Sign up for activities like sports or chess. This will get you into small groups with people who have the same interests as yours.(参加活动。报名参加体育或国际象棋等活动。这将使你进入与你有相同兴趣的人组成的小组。)”可知,本段主要讲解的是交朋友的方法。A项:Making Friends(交朋友)合乎题意。故选A。
根据前文“Take part in activities. Sign up for activities like sports or chess. This will get you into small groups with people who have the same interests as yours.(参加活动。报名参加体育或国际象棋等活动。这将使你进入与你有相同兴趣的人组成的小组。)”和后文“You might even be able to teach some other kids about how to do something.(你甚至可以教其他孩子如何做某事。)” E. This will also give you a chance to show your skills at a sport or other activities.(这也会给你一个机会在一项运动或其他活动中展示你的技能。)

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel (争吵) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping (哭泣) sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding (责备) from her mother. Having wandered (闲逛) aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.
I’ll treat you today”said the man, “come in.”
She is so merciless (无情) compared to a stranger!”

Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. She could hear her own heart beating loudly in her ears. Her hand trembled slightly as she reached for the doorknob. As she entered, she saw her mother sitting in the dimly lit living room. Jenny walked slowly towards her, her steps heavy with guilt. “Mom,” she said softly, “I’m back. I’m so sorry for what I did. I was so blind and ungrateful. You’ve given me so much love and care all these years, and I repaid you with rudeness.”
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. Jenny looked into her mother’s eyes, which were filled with a mixture of relief and love. Her mother cupped her face in her hands and said, “My dear, I was so worried about you. I’m just glad you’re safe.” They hugged each other tightly. Jenny realized that this was the place where she truly belonged, and that her mother’s love was an unbreakable bond. From then on, she made it a point to be more patient and understanding with her mother, knowing that every moment spent with her was a precious gift. Because in the end, it was the love of family that could heal all wounds and make one whole again.
