When I was in middle school, the best way that I could describe myself was as a parents’ worst nightmare: I didn’t care about my education, didn’t do my homework and always slept in class. My score was so bad that I still don’t know how I did.
I had my reasons for why I didn’t do my best— video games. When I was a teenager playing Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series, I definitely wasn’t looking to learn things. But with 11 main AC games all set during different times and places in history— like ancient Egypt and Greece—I was bound to learn something, even if just by accident. And I definitely did.
One day, my history teacher passed out blank maps of the Caribbean. It was a quiz I had forgotten about. We had to label countries and major cities. Luckily, I’d been playing a lot of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, which was set in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy in the early 18th century. So I was able to draw on my life as a pirate to fill in the map, and I got an A.
Ubisoft did a lot of research to recreate ancient Egypt in the game, and they released an educational discovery tour for each game that lets you look around the environment with no violence, enemies, or time constraints (限制). You can learn about the Olympic Games, and how Sparta trained its soldiers in ancient Greece with real historical figures acting as your tour guides, or jump over to ancient Egypt to check out mummies (木乃伊) and climb on the pyramids.
Obviously, Assassin’s Creed can’t teach you everything you need to know about the ancient world, but the game does make that world come alive for people who are reluctant to learn, like I was. So, take advantage of these things and your learning should be as enjoyable as possible.
4. Which of the following can best describe the author in middle school?
A. A tough nut. B. A black sheep.
C. A dark horse. D. A wet blanket.
5. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The history test was quite easy.
B. Pirates were good at map filling.
C. The author owed his A to the game.
D. He regrets wasting so much time on games.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Many students are addicted to video games.
B. Learning history is necessary for school students.
C. Experiential learning is a powerful way of learning.
D. Ubisoft accomplishes the educational purpose in its games.
7. What does the author want to convey through the text?
A. Playing computer games is harmful to us.
B. Games don’t necessarily prevent learning.
C. The drawbacks of video games can be minimized.
D. Bad grades in school won’t keep you from success.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. A transplant (移植) is the only treatment available to patients with end-stage heart failure, but there is a severe shortage of heart donors. That means there’s an urgent need to develop new ways to regenerate a diseased heart. Now the good news is that the world’s first complete 3D-printed heart, made using the patient’s own cells and materials, has been created in a lab.
Until now, success has been limited to printing only simple tissues without blood vessels (血管). “This is the first time anyone has successfully printed an entire heart anywhere,” said team leader Tal Dvir.
The 3D-printed heart is only about a third the size of an actual human heart and it doesn’t actually work. But it’s a groundbreaking step toward engineering customized (定制的) organs that can be transplanted with less risk of rejection. Dvir noted that scientists have managed to print a 3D structure of a heart before, but not with cells or blood vessels. The use of biological materials from a patient is key to successful engineering of tissues and organs.
Ideally, the biomaterial should possess the same biochemical and mechanical properties of the patients’ own tissues. This way, their bodies will be less likely to reject the organ, making transplants much safer.
While the 3D-printed heart is about a third the size of a human heart, the same technology can be used to print a normal-sized one. The team’s next step is to culture (培养) printed hearts in the lab and “teach them to behave” like real hearts. Then, researchers plan to transplant the 3D-printed heart into lab animals.
“Our results demonstrate the potential of our approach to engineering personalized tissue and organ replacement in the future,” Dvir said. “Maybe in 10 years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world, and these procedures will be conducted routinely.”
8. What can be inferred from the world’s first complete 3D-printed heart?
A. It makes organ transplants risk-free.
B. It bridges gaps in biological organ printing.
C. It solves the donor shortage for heart transplants.
D. It has the same properties as natural heart tissues.
9. What does Dvir imply about the previous 3D-printed heart structures in paragraph 3?
A. They were ready for transplant to animals.
B. They matched the size of real human hearts.
C. They lacked cell-based biological components.
D. They contained complete blood vessel networks.
10. What will Dvir’s team do in the future?
A. They will first test printed hearts on humans.
B. They will focus on curing early heart failure.
C. They will change the biological materials used.
D. They will improve the heart’s functional performance.
11. What’s Dvir’s attitude towards the 3D printing technology?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.
B 9. C 10. D 11. A

When the Derby Arboretum, one of the first public parks in England, opened in 1840, it was only open to the public on Sundays and Wednesdays. For the rest of the week, its fountains and pathways were reserved for paying customers, whose entry fees effectively supported the park.
The system was scrapped in 1882, as the growing concern for public health among Victorian reformers sped up the creation of open public parks in towns and cities across England. Anyone can now walk through the Derby Arboretum. But another form of gatekeeping is taking place in parks today. Councils that have seen their budgets severely reduced due to financial challenges are finding ways to turn parks into cash-generating properties, often by renting stretches of the land to fenced-off commercial events.
These deals can be mutually (互相) beneficial, particularly when the park is sizable and locals are consulted. They can also seem like a destructive form of temporary privatization. Earlier this month, Haringey Council in north London rented part of Finsbury Park to Tough Mudder, a popular obstacle (障碍) course and run for adults. Initiatives that encourage outdoor exercise are welcome, but the size and nature of the event drew criticism after hundreds of racers turned the field into a sea of mud and damaged a community orchard (果园).
Races and festivals generate income that councils can reinvest in park maintenance, but they can also wall off areas of parkland, making them less accessible for locals. The reliance on commercial income isn’t limited to London. Residents in Swansea and Manchester have complained about frequent fenced-off events. Councils find themselves in a difficult position. Parks are a non-essential service, and so they are at risk of cost-cutting. Income from events has become an increasingly important source of income. For councils that cannot make their parks pay, the risk is a thinning of local facilities and declining public space.
Parks are one of the last areas of truly public space. They offer us fresh air and comfort, space to breathe and exercise. Councils should not have to depend on commercial income to safeguard their future.
12. What does the underlined word “scrapped” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Simplified. B. Designed. C. Abandoned. D. Detailed.
13. Why was Tough Mudder criticized?
A. It refused to consult the council.
B. It designed inadequate obstacle courses.
C. It involved quite a few local racers.
D. It had an unfavourable environmental impact.
14. What is the concern about the reliance on commercial income for parks?
A. Insufficient event facilities. B. Reduced parkland accessibility.
C. Decreased park maintenance. D. Lack of interest from residents.
15. What is the author’s opinion on parks?
A. They should be truly for everyone.
B. They should be funded by councils.
C. They should be protected by park-goers.
D. They should enhance community engagement.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A

根据划线句后文“Anyone can now walk through the Derby Arboretum.( 现在任何人都可以进入德比植物园)”可知,划线句“The system was scrapped in 1882”表示该系统在1882年被废除,“scrapped”指原有的收费制度被“废除”。
根据文章第三段“Earlier this month, Haringey Council in north London rented part of Finsbury Park to Tough Mudder, a popular obstacle (障碍) course and run for adults. Initiatives that encourage outdoor exercise are welcome, but the size and nature of the event drew criticism after hundreds of racers turned the field into a sea of mud and damaged a community orchard
根据文章第四段的“Races and festivals generate income that councils can reinvest in park maintenance, but they can also wall off areas of parkland, making them less accessible for locals.(各种赛事和节日能带来收入,这些收入可以被市政部门用于公园的维护工作,但同时这些活动也可能将公园的部分区域封闭起来,从而减少了市民对这些区域的访问便利性。)”
根据文章最后一段“Parks are one of the last areas of truly public space. They offer us fresh air and comfort, space to breathe and exercise. Councils should not have to depend on commercial income to safeguard their future.(公园是为数不多的真正属于公众的公共空间之一。它们为我们提供了清新的空气和舒适的环境,为我们提供了放松和锻炼的空间。政府不应依赖商业收入来保障公园的未来发展。)”可知,作者认为公园是最后的真正公共空间之一,议会不应依赖商业收入来保障其未来,因此推断作者认为公园应真正为所有人服务。故选A。
Simon Sinek is the third most-watched TED Talks presenter of all time. Here are his top three secrets about delivering speeches.
____16____ Often people give talks to sell products or ideas. Sinek calls these kinds of speakers takers, and he says the audience can see through these people right away. “We are highly social animals,” says Sinek. “We can tell if you’re a giver or a taker, and people are more likely to trust a giver than a taker.”
____17____ Sinek says, “Scanning is your worst enemy. While it looks like you’re looking at everyone, it actually disconnects you from your audience.” It would be much easier and more effective, he says, if you directly look at specific audience members throughout your speech. “It’s like you’re having a conversation with your audience,” says Sinek. “____18____” This method not only creates a deeper connection with individuals but the entire audience can feel it.
Turn nervousness into excitement. ____19____ A few years ago he noticed that reporters interviewing Olympic athletes before and after competing were all asking the same question, “Were you nervous?” And all of the athletes gave the same answer: “No. I was excited.” These competitors changed their nervousness into excitement. ____20____ Then you should say to yourself, “I’m not nervous. I’m excited” “It really has a great effect on helping you change your attitude,” Sinek says.
A. Show up to give, not to take.
B. Say thank you when you’re done.
C. You’re not speaking at them, but speaking with them.
D. Make eye contact with audience members one by one.
E. Sinek learned this method from watching the Olympics.
F. You should practice speaking in public as often as possible.
G. When you’re up on stage, you will possibly go through the same thing.
A 17. D 18. C 19. E 20. G
根据文章第一段“Often people give talks to sell products or ideas. Sinek calls these kinds of speakers takers, and he says the audience can see through these people right away. “We are highly social animals,” says Sinek. “We can tell if you’re a giver or a taker, and people are more likely to trust a giver than a taker.”(通常,人们会通过演讲来推销产品或理念。Sinek将这类演讲者称为“索取者”,并且他表示观众很快就能识破这些人的伪装。“我们是高度社会化的动物,”西内克说道,“我们能够辨别出你是给予者还是索取者,而且人们更倾向于信任给予者而非索取者。”)”可知,人们通常演讲是为了推销产品或想法,我们能分辨你是给予者还是索取者,人们更可能信任给予者。因此推知,演讲时应以给予为目的,而非索取,A项“出席是为了付出,而非索取”。故选A。
根据文章第二段“Sinek says, “Scanning is your worst enemy. While it looks like you’re looking at everyone, it actually disconnects you from your audience.” It would be much easier and more effective, he says, if you directly look at specific audience members throughout your speech.( Sinek说:“扫视是你最大的敌人。尽管看起来你是在关注每一个人,但实际上这会让你与听众失去联系。” 他说,如果在演讲过程中能直接看向具体的听众成员,那会更加容易且有效得多。)”可知,扫视是你最大的敌人,如果你在演讲中直接看向特定的观众会更有效,因此推知D项“依次与观众进行眼神交流”符合语境,应逐一与观众进行眼神交流。故选D。
【18题详解】
前文““It’s like you’re having a conversation with your audience,” says Sinek.( Sinek说:“这就好比你在与你的听众进行交流。”)”
根据后文“A few years ago he noticed that reporters interviewing Olympic athletes before and after competing were all asking the same question, “Were you nervous?” And all of the athletes gave the same answer: “No. I was excited.” These competitors changed their nervousness into excitement.(几年前,他注意到在奥运会运动员比赛前后接受采访时,所有记者都问同一个问题:“你当时紧张吗?”而所有的运动员都给出了相同的回答:“不紧张。我非常兴奋。”这些运动员将紧张转化为兴奋了。)”可知,Sinek从奥运会中学习了这一方法。E项“Sinek是通过观看奥运会比赛而掌握这一方法的。”符合语境。故选E。
【20题详解】
根据后文“Then you should say to yourself, “I’m not nervous. I’m excited” “It really has a great effect on helping you change your attitude,” Sinek says.(那么你应该对自己说:“我并不紧张,我反而很兴奋。”“这确实对帮助你改变态度有着很大的作用,” Sinek说道。)”讲述了演讲者在舞台上的感受,结合前文奥运选手的感受可推知,演讲者与奥运选手的感受相似。故G项“当你站在舞台上时,你可能会经历同样的情形。”符合语境,承上启下,故选G。

37. stuck 38. which
39. that 40. anxious
41. To overcome
42. interviews
43. as 44. fluency
45. yourself
故填was called。
故填which。
It is/was…that/who…,因为被强调部分为原因状语because of the fear and lack of confidence,所以用that引导。故填that。
故填To overcome。
身份工作”为work as。故填as。

“Want to come over to my house after school?” my best friend, James, invited me during break time. I said yes, as I knew I could not disagree with him. Throughout the day, I stared at my exam results. I had scored a mere 62, while James had achieved a big 95 for Science! Green with envy, I maintained a long silence while avoiding my friend whenever possible.
After school, we walked silently to James’ apartment. When we arrived, his phone suddenly rang. As he excused himself to answer the call, I spotted a thick, red book on his bedroom desk. Immediately, a bad plan hatched in my mind and I rubbed (搓) my hands together in eager anticipation. Quietly walking over to his desk, I grabbed the book titled ‘Primary 4, All Science Notes and Tips. Score an A!’. Instantly, I tore the book into a dozen pieces. Printed pages floated in the air, as I let go of the anger inside me.
“Take that ... And that!” I said under my breath, tearing the last few pages and throwing away the remains in the dustbin. Suddenly, I heard the door open behind me. I turned around in shock and stared at my innocent friend.
“Oh, hi Peter! Are you looking at my new desk?” he asked cheerfully. “I can lend you my Science notes. I have another copy from my aunt.” Before I could stop him, he was already searching around his table for it. I stood rooted to the ground, my mouth wide open. What had I just done? Out of envy, I had destroyed a precious resource. Instead of feeling proud and happy for my friend’s admirable achievement, I had let my competitiveness control me. At that moment, I felt as if my heart was drowning in sorrow and I was filled with guilt.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
When I came to my senses, I apologized awkwardly to him and admitted my wrongdoing.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With a warm smile, he forgave me just like that.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I came to my senses, I apologized awkwardly to him and admitted my wrongdoing. I told James that I was consumed by jealousy because he scored much higher in Science, and that I had torn his book in a moment of foolish anger. He listened patiently without interrupting, which made me realize how selfish I had been. I added that I would buy him a new copy right away and promised that I would never let negative feelings ruin our friendship again. My eyes filled with tears as I spoke, fearing that he would never forgive me for what I had done.
With a warm smile, he forgave me just like that. He said he knew exams could make people feel stressed, and that he didn’t mind the book at all since he had the other copy. He also suggested that we study together every weekend, which would help me improve my Science skills. I felt a huge weight lift off my chest and thanked him sincerely for his kindness. From that day on, we supported each other more than ever, and I learned that true friendship is far more valuable than any exam score.

If you relive them, ____23____ the same emotions as if you are undergoing the same situations again, you are ____24____ associated with the incidents. If you can objectively recall the incidents in the past, it’s ____25____ that you are dissociated (使分离) from the incidents.
Now how do association and dissociation ____26____ us in our life?
The simple ____27____ I prefer to follow is to associate with positive things in life and dissociate from the negative ones. Several months ago, my friends and I went to Ooty Hill Station. One friend, Amy, had been there before — she’d had a wonderful time and ____28____ the beauty of nature. The only unpleasant thing was that her ring fell into the ____29____. When we decided to take a boat ride, Amy was not willing to _____30_____ us, as she had associated the _____31_____ with that unpleasant memory before closely. _____32_____ she had many other pleasant memories of her previous visit, she had closely _____33_____ that unpleasant incident to heart and relived the same old incident. Had she dissociated herself from that unpleasant incident, she could have figured out a way to keep the _____34_____ safe during such a boat ride.
