The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Requirements for completion:
•One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
•18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
•Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings

Since Jack Anderson was a child, he has been deeply interested in Chinese culture. When Jack was ten years old, he watched a documentary about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). He saved his pocket money to buy books about Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and other treatments, studying the basics on his own.
As Jack grew older, his passion for TCM became stronger. After finishing high school, he decided to travel to China to learn Traditional Chinese Medicine. He attended a well-known TCM school in Beijing. The study there was very demanding. Every day, Jack attended lectures on Chinese medical theory and practiced acupuncture and herbal medicine under the guidance of experienced teachers. Although the studies were difficult and sometimes confusing because of many differences, Jack worked hard and never gave up.

With continuous effort, he gradually improved his language skills and better understood the lessons.

He learned how to diagnose (诊断) illnesses by observing patients’ pulse and tongue and how to treat various conditions using acupuncture and herbal medicine. He often took part in TCM workshops and received recognition for his knowledge.
When Jack returned to the United States, he wanted to share the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine with his local community. He opened a small clinic where he treated patients patiently using acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other natural methods. Many people in his town began to trust and appreciate the treatments he provided.

C篇
Suppose you are out shopping and come across a friend who starts telling you a story that seems to be dragging on and on. You want to seem interested, so you offer the occasional “Oh” or “I see”. To your surprise, though, this person angrily stops in his tracks and says, “Sorry if I’m boring you!”
Where did this come from? Clearly, your body language must have betrayed (出卖) you. The idea that verbal (口头的) and nonverbal messages can conflict was the inspiration for a recently published study from Yale University’s Lucylle Armentano. As part of her study of communication in relationships, Armentano’s research also examined communication channels in people meeting for the first time.
To test the role of a mismatch between verbal messages and nonverbal messages on emotional communication, Armentano and her partner created experimental conditions to see what happens when someone asks for help from strangers. The research team created videotapes of a Yale student expressing nervousness in his words, with gestures, or both. The gestures included running his hands through his hair, grabbing his arms, and facially expressing uneasiness. The key question was whether the other participants, another 82 Yale students, would believe the student and provide the help he was requesting. They needed to give their responses.
Turning to the findings, those nonverbal cues for nervousness had a greater impact on helping behavior than the verbal cues. Surprisingly, helping behavior was the highest when verbal expressions of nervousness were low but nonverbal cues were high.
Recognizing that your body language can outweigh your words means that you need to be mindful of what your body is doing when you’re interacting with others. Generally, when someone is speaking to you, you want to look like you’re interested. Not only should you maintain eye contact, but you should keep your body still and face toward that person. If you’re not trying to look interested, it may be more polite to say you have to be somewhere else.
8.What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The obvious advantages of body language.
B. A situation where body language is a must.
C. The proper way to interact with old friends.
D. An example of a mismatch between verbal and nonverbal expressions.
9.What were the 82 Yale students asked to do?
A. Respond to the student’s request. B. Identify the types of body language.
C. Express nervousness in their words. D. Try to win the nervous student’s trust.
10.What played a more important role in helping the student win kindness?
A. His gestures of nervousness. B. His sincere verbal expressions.
C. His positive attitude to nervousness. D. His good manners in front of others.
11.What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Make a prediction. B. Offer some advice.
C. Present some facts. D. Give some warnings.
D篇
We all have friends who make us frown when they walk in. We know that within five minutes they will have us completely depressed, and we feel that there is nothing we can do about it. Their lives are desperate, sad, tragic, bored or whatever, and if you have a sympathetic ear, you listen and they are likely to keep coming back to tell you more. Do you know why? It makes them feel better. But you just want to jump out the nearest window, and they leave whistling and smelling the roses.
If you are surrounded by people like this, it may be impossible to get them out of your life because they’re your biggest customer, a relative or your business partner. But whatever else you do, you really do need to draw a line in the sand. If more of the people you mix with are negative than positive, you have a problem, which will only get worse over time and keep you trapped in the cycle of feeling overwhelmed.
I made a very conscious decision a number of years ago about the type of people I would have in my life. I want to be surrounded by energetic, enthusiastic and positive people who are getting on with their lives. I don’t care what they do for a living, how much money they have or who they know. All I care about is their zest for life. These people inspire and motivate me to be the best person I can be; they are supportive of any decision or change that will help me to achieve this goal. If I fail, they are the first people to support me and say at least I gave it a go.
If I listened to the negative people, I wouldn’t do anything, because life is clearly so messed up that there is nothing I can possibly do that would make it any better. There is no malicious intention in these people, and it’s just a reflection of where they are in life at the time. And that is sad, but we all need to decide if we want to be equally sad. I made the decision not to and that was that.
I suggest keeping such people at arm’s length. Some of them won’t like you for it. Be prepared for some bad results, but try it because the pay-off is big. And developing a proper way will make it easier.
12.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To explain the reason. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To criticize the behavior. D. To analyze the phenomenon.
13.Which of the following does the author agree with?
A. The identity of a person matters when we choose who to mix with.
B. We must stay away from a negative person even if he is our customer.
C. Being negative is a reflection of the state of life negative people are in.
D. The more negative people we stay with, the less overwhelmed we will be.
14.What does the underlined word “zest” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Doubt. B. Control. C. Expectation. D. Enthusiasm.
15.What is the author likely to talk about in the following paragraph?
A. How to define the pay-off. B. How to ignore the bad results.
C. How to say no to a friend you dislike. D. How to keep a distance from negative people.

·Consider the best method to deliver your message.
If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email.Written communication will give your audience more time to review it,think it over, and follow up with questions. 20
