If so, you can go to see On Top of Pyramid, the biggest-ever display of ancient Egyptian artifacts (历史文物) outside of Egypt. It’s now going on at Shanghai Museum from July 19, 2024. There are 788 items on display. The exhibition is divided into three parts. The Land of the Pharaohs (法老) This part starts with how ancient Egyptians thought the world was created. It focuses on temples and pyramids: two key symbols of ancient Egypt. You will learn about how Egyptians built things, how their society worked, and what their burial (葬礼) traditions were like. Some Chinese artifacts are also on display here so that you can compare the two ancient civilizations. The Secrets of Saqqara This part is all about Saqqara. This village was the main burial site in the ancient city of Memphis. Egypt’s very first pyramid was built right there. In 2020, researchers found many animal mummies (木乃伊) at Saqqara. They also found a temple for Bastet, a cat-like goddess. These discoveries brought new interest to the village. Who knows what other secrets lie under Saqqara’s sands? The Age of Tutankhamun (图坦卡蒙) Tutankhamun died around 1324 B.C.E. He made a grand “comeback” in 1922 when his tomb was found. It was packed with nearly 5,000 artifacts. Among them was the pharaoh’s golden mask. It remains the most recognizable Egyptian face in the world today. Here you will get to know more about the life of Tutankhamun. You will also get a taste of what life was like in Egypt in the 14th century B.C.E. Shanghai Museum opening time: 10:00-18:00 every day except Tuesday. On Top of the Pyramid runs until August 15, 2025. You’ve got plenty of time to check it out! 26. Simon is a school student and his parents have to work on weekdays, which of the following may be the suitable day for the family to watch On Top of Pyramid? A. B. C. D. 27. Which of the following statements is true? A. Mummies and pyramids are two key symbols of ancient Egypt. B. Egyptians built their first pyramid in the village of Saqqara. C. Tutankhamun made a great “comeback” with a golden mask. D. We can only see some ancient Egyptian artifacts on display. 28. What is the type of this passage? A. A novel. B. A story. C. A guide. D. A programme. B After the haircut It’s getting hot. You go to have your hair cut. The barber Tony cuts off part of your hair and sweeps it away, but your hair’s journey is not over after the haircut. Have you ever thought of planting your old hair after it’s cut off? Some farmers do! What comes up? Not wigs (假发), but bigger and tastier crops. Hair is full of nitrogen (氮) that helps plants to grow. When cut hair is mixed into soil, the hair breaks down, slowly letting out nitrogen so it can help flowers and vegetables get big a little faster. If you’ve got a wool sweater on, you’re wearing a sheep’s haircut. Sheep grow fine curly (弯曲的) fur called wool. All those curls make air pockets that trap heat, keeping the sheep warm. Farmers shear the sheep in summer, so the sheep don’t feel too hot. And we use the hair to make warm clothes, socks, and hats. Wool can even take in rain without feeling wet. Wool also doesn’t catch fire easily. What does your hair say about you? Even many years after it has been cut, hair can tell surprising secrets. Because hair is made from bits of old cells, it has trace (微量) of chemicals (化学物质) that were in the body when the hair grew. When people are kept in the situation of dangerous chemicals, these traces remain in the hair, even long after they have disappeared from the body itself. Testing hair can help doctors know if there are dangerous chemicals in the food and water. Hair can tell another important secret — whose hair is it? This can be used to help solve crimes. Hair does so many things for us. It keeps us warm and cool, helps farmers, shows mysteries, and provides endless styling fun. One thing is for sure, it’s not just for wigs any more. 29. In which part of a magazine can we probably read this passage? A. Fashion. B. Science. C. History. D. Health. 30. What does the underlined part “shear the sheep” mean? A. Give enough food to the sheep. B. Wash the sheep many times. C. Find living place for the sheep. D. Cut the wool off the sheep. 31. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4? A. Hair helps keep warm. B. Hair testing is important. C. Hair can tell secrets. D. Hair helps solve crimes. 32. How is the passage organized (组织)? (P: Paragraph) A. B. C. D. C An invasive species (入侵物种) of ant is changing the way lions hunt and eat in Kenya, according to a new study. Lions hide behind whistling thorn trees before they hunt zebras. However, since the big-headed ants arrived, the number of whistling thorn trees has fallen. The big-headed ant is one of the world's worst invasive species. This means it is not from the area. The ants arrived in Kenya from southern Africa about 15 years ago, and since then have been attacking the acacia ants—ants that have lived there long ago. Acacia ants live in and look after the whistling from trees that spread over the landscape. In the “symbiotic relationship (共生关系)”, the acacia ants feed on the trees and use them for cover. In return, they protect the trees from animals that might eat too much of them, like elephants or giraffes. They do this by moving and attacking together. Big-headed ants eat acacia ants and their eggs. As a result, the number of acacia ants is falling. Big-headed ants don’t protect whistling thorn trees either, so with fewer acacia ants, the trees are in trouble. Professor Todd Palmer, one of the study’s writers, and his team, found that in areas where big-headed ants appear, elephants destroy (破坏) five to seven times more trees than in areas without big-headed ants. This means the landscape is more open and zebras are better able to find any lion following them. Zebra that are killed in these areas are three times lower than in tree-filled places. The good news is that the lion population remains stable (稳定的) because lions are looking elsewhere for their lunch—they seem to be hunting buffalo (野牛) instead of zebras. This probably means that the tiny ants have caused lions to change their behaviour too, forcing them to hunt in larger groups for the bigger, heavier buffalo. Professor Palmer said, “We often find it’s the little things that rule the world.” 33. The number of whistling thorn trees is becoming smaller mainly because ________. A. elephants need to eat more trees B. big-headed ants don’t protect the trees C. the trees are too old to survive D. acacia ants don’t protect the trees 34. Which of the following best describes the “symbiotic relationship” between acacia ants and whistling thorn trees? A. Both ants and trees attack elephants together. B. The trees grow better when ants cat their eggs. C. The ants eat the trees, and the trees provide shelter. D. The trees feed the ants, and the ants protect the trees. 35. According to Paragraphs 4 & 5, which shows the CORRECT order of the changes? ①The landscape is more open. ②The number of acacia ants is falling. ③Whistling thorn trees are in trouble. ④Fewer zebras are killed in this area. A. ②③①④ B. ②③④① C. ③②①④ D. ③②④① 36. What’s the best title for the text? A. The worst big-headed ant B. Changes of the whistling thorn trees C. Tiny ants can change lions’ diets D. Acacia ants and big-headed ants D Reading makes a full man. I believe you must have read many books. Have you ever read the novel called The Surprise? Have a good time reading the following excerpt! It’s a pterodactyl (翼手龙).” “A pterodactyl?” shout the children. “Yes, it’s a type of dinosaur. Pterodactyls can fly,” says Dad. Then Helen names it Dacty. A month later, he grows up. But there is something wrong with his wings. “My room is too small and Dacty keeps banging (碰撞) his wings on the walls. I feel sorry for him,” says Helen. Finally, they take Dacty to a vet (兽医). Two weeks later, Dacty’s wings are better. However, he isn’t willing to fly. They phone Aunt Elizabeth. Soon she arrives. “My office is very big. It’s perfect for Dacty during the day. And at night, when the museum is empty, Dacty can fly around happily.” Then she takes them to the museum. On arriving, they take Dacty out of the basket. He stretches (伸展) his wings, flies high up and lands on a stone statue. “Look, he likes here,” shouts Helen. “Can he see in the dark?” asks Roger. “Yes, they see clearly in the dark, just like owls (猫头鹰),” says Aunt Elizabeth. Six months passes and Dacty is very big now. One night, Dacty sees lights moving inside the museum. Two men—Bert and Eric come in with torches (手电筒). They are wearing masks and trying to open a case (箱子). Inside it is a mummy (木乃 伊). Suddenly Eric looks up and sees Dacty. He is very scared. “Look, Bert, there is a huge bird up there.” Bert looks up. Dacty doesn’t move, “Eric, don’t be silly. It’s only a statue,” says Bert. “Come on. I will open the case. You look for the gold medallions (大奖章).” At the moment, Dacty files down and catches Eric. The thief is very scared and he can’t say anything. Dacty flies up and lifts him on top of a statue. He’s stuck. At once, Dacty flies down again and catches Bert, too. Both of them are stuck there. The next morning, when Aunt Elizabeth comes in, she sees the broken mummy case and the two men. They are shouting loudly. Dacty flies down to her. “Here you are, Dacty,” she says and pets (爱抚) his head. “Thank you. You did a great job.” Then she phones the police. The mayor (市长) shakes Dacty’s wing and puts a big shiny medal over his head. “Congratulations, you did a great job” Then he turns to Aunt Elizabeth, “It’s great to have a big bird as a guard!” “Dacty is a pterodactyl!” Roger says. “Dacty is a hero now,” says Aunt Elizabeth. “A pterodactyl?” shouts another man. “Wow! They love warm weather and jungles (丛林). I work in the Botanical Gardens (植物园). We have a wonderful palm (棕榈) house, big and warm, just like a jungle. He will love there. You can come to visit it anytime.” So now Dacty is living in the Botanical Gardens. Roger and Helen visit him every day. (Adapted from The Surprise) 37. How does Dacty hurt his wings? A. But at some point, they start becoming “creators”. So when does the change happen? According to a new study by scientists from the University of Chicago to the US, English-speaking children start making their own sentences at about 2.5 years old. To do this, kids need to first understand the rules of the language. For English, one important rule is that determiners (限定词), like “a” and “the”, go in front of nouns. Every four months, the scientists recorded 64 English-speaking children talking with their parents. The scientists found that at around 30 months later, kids started using both “a” and “the” in front of the same noun, for example, “dog”. This showed that they understood the determiner-noun language pattern (模式). What’s more, they were using the pattern to create more expressions their parents had never said. But the recording cannot cover everything the kids hear and say each day. So the scientists developed an AI model to double check their findings. Like a human child the model could find language patterns in the recordings and predict the words to come. “For the most part, it does what the kids does,” Susan Goldin, one of the scientists, told Neuroscience News. The team then wanted to see when the model produced its first new determiner-noun phrase. The result was the same as the study on kids. The findings can further scientists’ understanding of language learning. They can also help teach kids with special needs, such as those learning sign language. 66.
