Having Zao Cha, or morning tea, is a typical morning activity for people in Guangdong. Whether rich or poor, young or old, locals go to morning tea houses to drink tea and enjoy dim sum (点心) for breakfast. For them, Zao Cha is not just a daily habit but also an important way of social communication.
Guangdong morning tea dates back to the Qing Dynasty. It began with a small restaurant in Guangzhou called “Yi Li Guan”, which served tea and dim sum. Over time, more and more similar tea houses appeared. Since then, Cantonese (广州的) people have developed the habit of drinking morning tea in tea houses.
Today on weekends or holidays, the whole family or good friends often sit together for morning tea. It’s considered an enjoyable way to pass time and relax completely.
In morning tea, tea is a necessary part. The Cantonese like black tea most because it warms the stomach and helps digestion (消化). Although a little bitter and less clear than green tea, it matches perfectly with dim sum during morning tea. Oolong tea, Tieguanyin tea and pu’er tea are also popular choices.
Besides, dim sum is a must for common morning tea. Classical dim sum usually includes buns, dumplings and rice rolls in different ingredients such as beef, chicken, pork, shrimp or vegetables. They are usually small and served in 3 or 4 pieces in one plate.
The morning tea culture has become worldwide now, thanks to the increasing number of overseas Chinese. Cantonese morning tea restaurants can now be found easily in big cities like New York and even on some small islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

It was time to move camp. White Fang was worried. He decided to hide. He found a good hiding place near the camp and waited there.
His mother, the she-wolf, and the Indian man who had taken after him and beaten him often, called to him, but he did not follow. They came looking for him but failed. White Fang waited in his hiding place, shaking, because he was afraid. He believed that if they found him, he would get a beating.
At last, they went away. White Fang was alone. Now he began to be really afraid, even scared. He had no mother to care for him. There were no men to throw him food. There was no warm tent to sleep in. There was only the forest, full of strange noises.
Suddenly, the moon went behind a cloud. White Fang was in darkness. He started to run. He did not know where he was going. He only knew that he had to keep moving.
After many hours, he came to where the Indians had camped the night before. There was no one there, but White Fang could smell men. He followed where his nose led him. For more than thirty hours, he ran without stopping. He ran along the river bank and through icy streams. He pushed his way through thick bushes. He became wet, cold, and very tired.
Finally, he arrived somewhere new. He saw the smoke from the fires. He smelled the cooking meat. He heard the Indians talking.
More than anything, he wanted to go back to the camp where it was warm and there was food. He knew he had been wrong to run away. ▲ .
Keeping low to the ground, he moved slowly into the camp. The man was sitting by the fire. White Fang moved very, very slowly toward him. One of the best parts of autumn is its beautiful colors. Normally green leaves turn into orange, yellow, red and finally brown. This is called “leaf phenology”, and many people look forward to it every year. However, because of climate (气候) change, autumn is changing.
According to a study that came out earlier this year, the season length is growing. It is taking longer for leaves to change their colors. And this is not the only way that climate change is ruining the season.
“Trees are holding onto their leaves longer,” explained Dr. Diamond, a senior climate scientist. “In my own neighborhood, I can remember that the leaves would drop a lot sooner 20 years ago than they do now. This is a personal experience, but research actually supports what we’re seeing.”
Climate change isn’t just causing the leaves to change later. We can also expect later frosts (霜) according to Dr. Mann, a professor of the University of Pennsylvania. Mann said, “That means pests (害虫) stay active for a longer time in autumn, leading to a greater health risk to human beings.”
If there is any good news at all, though, we may be able to delay (延缓) this development. Mann pointed out that if humans limited the carbon emissions (限制碳排放), they could still stop the worst effects (影响) of climate change from hitting them during the autumn months. “A new study recently suggests that surface warming will possibly stop after carbon emissions reach zero,” Mann noted in Live Science recently.
Autumn is such a wonderful season—whether it’s the golden leaves covering the grasslands in North China or the ginkgo trees (银杏树) dropping their yellow leaves in our schoolyard, it’s a gift we should keep. The beautiful autumn we protect today may be the sweet memory we will hold tomorrow.
32. Which is NOT the effect of climate change on autumn?
A. The season length is becoming longer. B. Leaves are changing their colors later.
C. There is much more frost in autumn. D. Pests keep active longer than before.
33. In which of the following blanks can we put the word “ruin”?
Last month, a fireworks show in the Himalayas might badly ① the local environment. The noise could scare wild animals, and the ② left might pollute the land. Human beings should learn to ③ and protect nature. It’s necessary for us to find a ④ between development and protection.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
34. What does the underlined phrase “this development” refer to?
A. The beautiful autumn scenery in people’s life.
B. Dr. Diamond’s memories of the autumn before.
C. The autumn changes because of climate change.
D. Dr. Mann’s advice on stopping carbon emissions.
35. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To describe the beautiful colors of autumn. B. To call for actions against climate change.
C. To talk about the effects of autumn changes. D. To explain the research about leaf phenology.

Are school lunch periods (午餐时间) too short?
Studies show that kids who eat a nutritious (有营养的) lunch at school have more energy and are better able to focus and learn. But over the recent years, lunch periods have gotten shorter as schools try to find more time for study, making it hard for kids to finish a meal. Some people say a longer lunch period would let students enjoy the benefits of a healthy meal, while others believe the extra time should be spent on learning. What do you think?
(Leo and Mia are having a discussion about their lunch period.)
Leo: Finally, the lunch bell! I’m hungry! But the hallways are so crowded. We have to get to the dining hall, wait in line and find a seat. There is little time to eat.
Mia: When I’m in a rush, I just get the easiest thing, like chips or a snack. No time to choose fruit or vegetables. That’s unhealthy.
Leo: Yes, but if we don’t eat properly, it will be so hard to pay attention in class. I can’t listen carefully in class.
Mia: I agree. A longer lunch time would be great. We could relax and chat with friends. That would make me feel less tired.
Leo: True. But what if some students just spend the extra (额外的) time talking or looking at our phones instead of eating?
Mia: That might be a problem. And if lunch time is longer, maybe the school day would end later. That would be super tiring!

If you usually feel shy in public, you are not alone, for shyness is a common problem. It’s not surprising that social scientists are trying to find out its environmental causes.
First of all, today’s children are growing up in smaller and smaller families, with fewer and fewer relatives living nearby. Growing up in homes in which both parents work full time, children may not have the socializing (社会化的) experience of some visits by neighbors and friends. Because they don’t have much social experience, they may begin to feel shy when they start school.
The second environmental cause of shyness may be one’s own culture. A study in Japan showed that 57 percent of people said they were shy. Researchers say one reason is that in Japan, when a person does well, people thank their family or teachers and others. While if they fail, they blame (责备) themselves. As a result, Japanese learn not to take risks to speak out in public and depend on group-shared decisions.
Technology may also play a role. Recently, a study shows that in the US, the number of shy young people has risen from 40 percent to 50 percent in recent years. Because of technology, watching TV, playing video games and surfing the Internet have taken the place of the traditional social activities for many young people. Adults also talk less to people like bank clerks or shop assistants, because people can use machines to do their banking, and order goods. Therefore, they become shy.
It seems that most people have experienced shyness at some time in their lives. So, if you are shy, don’t worry, because there are many people like you.
The passage mainly introduces ___62___. There are three factors (因素) behind this. Firstly, because families nowadays are getting smaller and parents are usually full-time workers, children don’t have enough social experience. Secondly, one’s culture also matters. Normally, people ___63___ speaking out in public if they often blame themselves when they fail. Thirdly, because of technology, many young people today ___64___ to talk with others than before. All in all, ___65___ that almost everyone has experienced it. So if you feel shy, remember you are not the only one.

There are two photos hanging in my home. One shows my father’s teenage years, and the other records my growth.
Great changes have taken place over the past twenty years. In terms of clothes, my father wore simple clothes, while I can wear fashionable clothes of different styles. For food, my father mostly ate at home with few choices, but now we can eat out and enjoy many kinds of foods. Our house has changed from a small and old one to a big, new and bright one. Regarding transportation, my father used to walk or ride a bike, but now we often go out by bus or car.
These changes are due to the government’s efforts, personal hard work, and the development of technology. I believe our life will become better and better.
