Every day, the keepers are busy preparing food, training animals, among many other duties. Let’s take a look at one of their typical jobs.
7 a.m.
The first thing we do in the morning is check on all the animals in our charge. We take a head count and make sure everyone appears healthy. Our North American beavers (河狸) are active at night. We give them a quick hello and try not to disturb their rest.
8 a.m.
Every day, we sort through (分类整理) more than 100 pounds of fish for our sea lions and seals (海豹). Together with our volunteers, we make sure that the fish is of the highest quality before we feed it to an animal.
8:30 a.m.
Our sea lions are fed many times a day. Each feeding is an opportunity for us to carefully check every part of their bodies.
9:30 a.m.
It’s time to train our gray wolves. We would ask for an action. If the animal performs the required movement, he or she will be given a meatball. Of course, the animals can choose to walk away, and they won’t be punished (惩罚) for doing that.
10:15 a.m.
Our daily sea lion and seal show begins! Our visitors are always surprised at the intelligence of these animals. Through our shows, they also learn how to help protect sea animals.
1:45 p.m.
Our beavers wake up. We feed them and do a careful body check on each of them.
2:20 p.m.
We train the other animals, including the river otters (河獭) and the ravens (渡鸦). Neither rain nor cold can keep us from our duties. We care for the animals 365 days a year.

Our memories can sometimes tell lies.
Is it shi or si in the classic Chinese sentence “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man (天降大任于斯/是人)”?
A few years ago, people had a(n) ____45____ discussion online about this. Most people “clearly remember” that it is si, but their childhood textbooks say it is shi.
It shows that our memory is not always ____46____. According to U.S. expert, Faith Brynie, memories can be made unclear by imagination, belief and time. Many studies have proven that “feeling certain” about a memory has ____47____ to do with facts.
Scientists at Cornell University, U.S., told college students a story about a man. The man walked quickly out of the restaurant without paying the bill. The first group was told that the man “liked stealing”. The second group was told that he left ____48____ he had to answer an emergency phone call. One week later, the first group remembered a higher bill: 10 to 25 percent more than the bill really was. The second group remembered ____49____ bill. The study showed that how we expect or believe things to happen is likely to distort (歪曲) our memories: remembering things that never happened.
In a follow-up experiment, people watched a film and were asked, “How fast was the white car going when it passed the wooden hut as it was travelling along the country road?” ____50____, there was no hut in the film. But about 20 percent of the audience said they had seen the hut. Scientists explain that parts of the brain for actually seeing an object and imagining an object overlap (重叠). Therefore, imagination after getting a clue could leave a memory trace in the brain.

Stand in front of a mirror and look at it. How much do you really know about the person in it?
It’s not an easy job to know ourselves. To help students do this important task, schools across China are providing more classes and activities on self-knowledge.
Liu Yue is a teacher from Chengdu Yucai Middle School. She has recently given her students a useful tool. “It’s called the Johari Window, developed by two U.S. psychologists (心理学家),” said Liu. “It has four areas about one’s self: An open area that everyone knows about, a hidden area that only you know, a blind spot that everyone knows except for you and an unknown area that nobody knows. Using this tool, students did a great job seeing themselves through a new lens.”
“I’m most curious about my blind spot,” said eighth-grader Yang Manfei. “So I did a survey with my friends.” The results showed that she easily gets anxious (焦虑紧张的) and impatient because of procrastination, the habit of delaying doing things until the last moment.” “It is a bad habit I’ve never realized,” Yang said.
“I find the unknown area most amazing,” said Sun Boyin, another student. “It means everyone has lots of potential(潜能).” When Sun entered middle school, he was not good at math. “But I set a goal and did lots of math exercises. Now I’m much better at the subject. The unknown part of my math ability is getting clearer,” he said.
When it came to the hidden area, most students kept silent. “I’m afraid to show my secrets deep down,” said Li Yixuan. “Then one classmate stood up and said his favourite cartoon is Tom and Jerry. Li thought to himself, “Am I brave enough to show my childish hobby? I want my classmates to see me as a grown person, not a silly child.” But then he realized that classmate wasn’t silly at all. Instead, he has the courage to be himself. “Show yourself and make yourself better. That’s the best lesson I’ve learned,” Li added.
Dear friends, do you want to learn more about yourself using the Johari Window? Which part would you like to find out most now and why? Please share your idea and a reason here: _________.

【64题答案】
【答案】范文1:
I suggest putting up the first poster in the classroom. My reasons are as follows.
First of all, the words on this poster are short and easy to understand. I’ve always believed that the simpler a slogan is, the better it works. Secondly, I really like the message in this poster. Now that we are in Grade 9, the zhongkao is ever closer. Many students are so anxious that they are taking steps that are actually too big for them. They focus only on the most difficult points, without paying as much attention to the basics. Without a good foundation, they will have trouble furthering their studies in high school. The first poster makes us think twice about this. It encourages us to take one step at a time. In fact, if we can improve just a little bit every day, we’ll finally make a big leap forward.
I think my suggestion deserves careful consideration and I hope you agree.
范文2:
My favorite poster is the one with a smiling flower and the words “stay positive” on it. Let me tell you why.
As Grade 9 students, we are busy with our studies. Many of us are also under a lot of stress. Some exams can be quite challenging, and we may end up with unsatisfactory scores. These “failures” can cause some students to feel depressed. This poster tells us that when we meet with difficulties, we should not get upset. Instead, we should stay positive. This is an important message for us to keep in mind. Only by staying positive can we find the strength to solve all the problems in our lives and studies, no matter how difficult they are. What’s more, I also like the design of this poster. It’s simple and pleasing. The smiling flower is really cute.
All in all, the third poster is my favorite. It will inspire us to work harder and become better selves in the coming new year.
