Cats, like dogs, have been domesticated and generally thrive (茁壮成长) on human companionship. George is a 7-year-old white domestic shorthair (短毛猫) that once lived in a senior living facility, but when it closed down, he was taken to a local animal shelter, where he quickly became depressed. Finding a home for the sad cat wasn't going to be easy — his clear unhappiness, combined with his unusual appearance, was the reason for a long stay at the shelter.
The staff in the shelter knew he needed a job, a job where he got to be the center of attention any time he walked into the room, so Alex and the others at the shelter searched for another senior care home to get George back to work.
After senior living facilities found out the cat had years of previous experience that allowed him to avoid meow-orientation, a new staff training, they were waiting in line to add George to their staff. Eventually, the shelter chose Forest Hills Personal Care Home, and George has made himself at home. To no one’s surprise, he’s perfect at his job.
“He’s a lap cat, he’s a cute cat, and he’s the kind of boy that’ll be very faithful to you and follow you around. He thrives on being with a lot of people,” Alex explains.
The residents at the personal care home love him and give him all the attention he could ever possibly need. But once his shift is over, all the elderly residents are sound asleep and the night nurses are counting the minutes until they can finally rest, George begins his nightly adventures. He gets the late night zoomies (疯跑) to get some exercise before another long day of caring for his residents. Being a working cat isn’t always easy, but George manages it effortlessly.
4. What initially made it difficult for George to find a new home?
A. He was beyond the suitable age for adoption.
B. He was unwilling to interact with humans.
C. He appeared low-spirited and had an uncommon look.
D. He required professional medical attention.
5. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Meow-orientation is a very difficult training for new staff.
B. George’s previous experience was not helpful at all.
C. Senior living facilities valued George’s work experience.
D. The shelter had a hard time choosing a care home for George.
6. What does George do at night to prepare for his next workday?
A. He sleeps deeply with the elderly residents.
B. He receives special meals from night nurses.
C. He engages in energetic running exercises.
D He interacts with shelter staff.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Lonely Shelter Dog B. A Working Cat Back on Duty
C. Training Cats for Senior care D. An Animal Shelter Full of Love

The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play have an important part in keeping you healthy.
Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is.You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.
Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it’s for children. Physical play is important to the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) falling.
Anyway, adding humor, laughter and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.
8. What does the underlined word “infectious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Of great importance.
B. Able to keep people in high spirits.
C. Capable of quickly influencing other people.
D. Able to prevent illness from spreading.
9. What can laughter increase according to the author?
A. Cognitive abilities.
B. Good relationships.
C. A sense of humor.
D. Responsibility and trust.
10. What does the author think the old should do?
A. They should have a good rest.
B. They should play like children.
C. They should prevent cognitive falling.
D. They should take part in physical play.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Humor, Laughter and Play for Health
B. Always Keep Our Body Healthy
C. Have an Active and Happy Life
D. Let Our Body and Mind Relax
D
A major reason why plastic bags and yogurt containers aren’t recycled is that it’s much more frugal to make these products from the ground up than to recycle them. However, a new recycling technique promises a cost-effective way to turn these common plastic waste items into high-quality liquid fuels.
What makes plastics useful, namely their strength and resistance to high temperatures, becomes an annoyance when it comes to recycling the materials. The strong carbon-carbon bonds in these plastics requires very high temperatures to break, making the process energy-consuming. Once the bonds break, the smaller molecules (分子) quickly form new bonds, resulting in unwanted chemicals. These byproducts then have to be broken down again, adding time and complexity.
Researchers developed a way to transform these plastics into useful fuels at temperatures below 100℃, without creating any side products. They conduct the chemical reaction in the presence of a new type of catalyst (催化剂) in a special acidic solution. In these reaction conditions, as soon as the carbon bonds in the plastic break apart, new bonds form in a controlled way, giving off the chemicals called alkanes. The alkanes can be used either as a fuel or as raw material for new plastics. The entire reaction takes place in a single reaction container. It takes only three hours and occurs at 70℃. By comparison, existing recycling techniques typically require two stages, take much more time, and need temperatures of over 200°C.
Up to now, this catalyst has been used in some factories. But it will take more research to know whether the technique can be translated to more occasions. If so, such a low-cost method to turn single-use plastics into high-value materials could go a long way in making the plastic economy sustainable.
12. What does the underlined word “frugal” mean in paragraph 1?
A. typical. B. expensive. C. inexpensive. D. reasonable.
13. What can we know about plastics from paragraph 2?
A. They stretch easily and quickly. B. They are productive in poisonous gases.
C. They fail to resist heat perfectly. D. They are stable in chemical properties.
14. What does the new way of recycling plastics feature?
A. Keeping new bonds from forming. B. Controlling acidity of the solution.
C. Stressing cleanliness and speed. D. Extending functions of plastics.
15. What is researchers’ attitude toward the technique’s wide application?
A. Cautious. B. Hopeless. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
I loved nothing more than fishing. The summer after fourth grade, I’d head out to the pond with my pole every day. I didn’t keep the fish I caught. I set them free instead. I simply enjoyed the excitement of catching a big fish.
One afternoon, I came running home, bursting with excitement. “I caught the biggest fish ever today!” I announced. “It was this big!” I stretched my hands apart carefully, giving my family the length from nose to tail. Tommy, my older brother, didn’t believe me. “You caught a fish that big in a pond that small?” he said. “I think someone is exaggerating (夸大其词) a little bit. No picture, no fish.”
“It’s not a lie,” I said loudly and stomped upstairs. Mum followed me to my bedroom, trying to cheer me up. “Sometimes it’s hard for people to believe things they haven’t seen with their own eyes,” she said. “But why should the fish have to die so other people will believe me?” I replied.
A few days later, Mum bought me a camera to take to the pond. Never once, however, did I manage to take a picture of my fish. I just couldn’t get the camera out of my bag in time. “Sure you couldn’t!” Tommy would jokingly say over and over. “Just admit it. No picture, no fish.”
On the last day of summer vacation, I caught an even bigger fish. I was lying on the bank looking up at the clouds when I felt a tug on my line. I really had to wrestle with it. With my other hand I tried to find my camera. I felt all around my bag and even turned it out on the bank. But the camera wasn’t in my bag! “No picture, no fish!” Tommy’s words started echoing in my head, making me even more anxious.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A. Cautious. B. Hopeless. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided to bring the fish back to show Tommy.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What a relief to see the fish alive in the pond!
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I decided to bring the fish back to show Tommy. I carefully lifted the fish out of the water and held it tightly in my hands. As I walked home, I imagined the look on Tommy's face when he saw the huge fish. When I got home, I found Tommy in the living room. “Look!” I shouted, proudly presenting the fish. Tommy's eyes widened in surprise. “Okay, you were right,” he said. But then I noticed the fish was not moving. Panic struck me. I quickly ran back to the pond with the fish.
What a relief to see the fish alive in the pond! I gently lowered the fish into the water and watched as it swam away. I realized that the most important thing wasn't proving Tommy wrong, but rather the joy of fishing and the beauty of nature. From then on, I still went fishing every summer, but I never cared about taking pictures or proving anything to anyone. I just enjoyed the peaceful time by the pond and the thrill of catching fish.
