B ①The Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival. ②The festival is held in the golden season of autumn, at harvest-time. The bright clear weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festival happy atmosphere. The Chongyang Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities. Climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood (茱萸) and drinking chrysanthemum (菊花) wine have become the traditional activities of the festival. ③The dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance (香气), and is often used as a Chinese herbal medicine. People in ancient times believed it could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from getting a chill (寒意) in late autumn. So its history as a medicine goes back many centuries. But the custom of carrying a spray of dogwood during the Double Ninth Festival is slowly dying out and many people in the cities do not even know what a dogwood spray looks like. ④Early in Han Dynasty, about 2000 years ago, people used to climb a high platform outside the capital city of Chang’an on the occasion of the Chongyang Festival. For many, it was the last outing of the year before the onset of winter. The custom evolved (发展成) into the present form, when people go climbing to get some exercises as well as enjoy the autumn scenery. ⑤But what about those people who live in plains far from any mountain? The problem is solved by going for a picnic and eating cakes. The Chinese word for “cake” is “Gao”, a homonym of the Chinese word for “high”. Mountains are high, so eating cakes can, by a stretch of the imagination, take the place of going for a climb. 4. Why did people carry a spray of dogwood on Chongyang Festival in ancient times? A. Because the dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance. B. Because the dogwood can be used as a Chinese herbal medicine. C. Because the dogwood has a long history as a medicine. D. Because people believed the dogwood could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from getting a chill. 5. People now climb mountains on the Chongyang Festival. A. to have a last outing of the year before the onset of winter B. to get some exercises C. to enjoy beautiful autumn scenery D. both B and C 6. Which is the structure of this passage? A. ①-②-③-④-⑤ B. C. D. 7. What is the passage mainly about? A. The Double Ninth Festival. B. People climbed mountains to celebrate the Chongyang Festival. C. People often drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine on the Double Ninth Festival. D. Eating cakes is just like climbing mountains. C I spent three years teaching English at a middle school in Chongqing, China. While teaching in Chongqing, I had chances to travel all across Asia. My adventure (冒险) to the Gobi Desert was one of my favorites. My trip took me from the mountains of Zhangye Danxia, to Jiayuguan, an ancient fort (要塞) on the Great Wall of China. I ended at Dunhuang. I did the journey all by myself. A trip alone meant that I had to depend on my Mandarin (普通话) speaking skills. When I first arrived in China my Mandarin was not good, but I tried to speak to local families and children on the trains. They were all very friendly. I had families practicing English with me as well. We all got our translation apps open when there was an unfamiliar word. Mount Everest was my last major trip before leaving China. I made my way to the famous mountain with a tour group. It was amazing to put myself into Tibetan culture and experience the world through their eyes. I used my language skills to help our group order food in the markets and translate to English when our guide couldn’t find a proper word to express something. Physically, the terrain (地形) was unique, and the high height and lack of oxygen made me feel sick. As a result, I couldn’t sleep well at night. I remembered clearly waking up in the night to get my oxygen tank (氧气瓶) many times. However, I made it. After three days’ traveling, we finally saw sunset and sunrise at the top of Base Camp of Mount Everest. The whole experience made me fall in love with traveling, and gave me the desire (欲望) to experience even more of the world. 8. What was the last stop when the author was on his trip to the Gobi Desert? A. Zhangye Danxia. B. Jiayuguan. C. Dunhuang. D. Potala Palace. 9. The author went to climb Mount Everest with ______. A. nobody else B. his friends C. his parents D. other tourists 10. Why couldn’t the author sleep well at night? A. Because he felt uncomfortable on the high mountain. B. Because he had slept too much during the daytime. C. Because animals and people were too noisy outside. D. Because he wanted to see sunset and sunrise very much. 11. What might the author think of his travel? A. Enjoyable. B. Boring. C. Stupid. D. Unhappy. D On March 14 in 2018, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK. Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe began with the Big Bang and will end in black holes. And this theory became the important base (基础) for a lot of later research. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time (《时间简史》), which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN. Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong will and positive attitude. When Hawking was 21, he was told that he had a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and “speak” using a computerized voice. But this didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, one can not be psychologically (心理上) disabled as well.” he once said. Hawking travelled around the world to attend science meetings, visiting every continent, including Antarctica. He was also a fan of popular culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory. He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon. When he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness. He hoped to travel into space one day. In 2013, Hawking spoke about how he felt life was unfair when he first knew his illness. “But now, 50 years after my illness, I can be quietly satisfied with my life,” he said peacefully. 12. How important is Hawking’s theory that the universe began with the Big Bang and will end in black holes? A. It helped common people understand the universe. B. It is helpful for a lot of later research. C. It made his famous book sell more than 10 million copies all over the world. D. This achievement led him to become a strong and positive famous man. 13. In what order did the following take place in the story? a. He said that he was happy with his life 50 years after his illness. b. He had to sit in a wheelchair and began to use a computer to help him speak. c. He took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness. d. He went up in a hot-air balloon. e. He couldn’t walk and talk at the age of 21. A. e-b-a-d-c B. a-e-b-d-c C. e-b-d-c-a D. a-e-d-b-c 14. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. He travelled around the world just in order to have fun. B. Although Hawking had a serious illness, he still had a wonderful and meaningful life. C. He didn’t like popular culture or TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory. D. He felt life was fair when he first knew his illness. 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article? A. To tell us the brightest star went dark and Hawking died. B. To introduce Hawking’s famous book A Brief History of Time. C. To describe how Hawking overcame his serious physical illness. D.
