When it comes to talking about Facebook, we cannot stop ourselves from describing its creator, Mark Zuckerberg. His success story and Facebook have inspired many people all over the world in different ways. Mark Zuckerberg was born into a well-educated family and developed an interest in computer programming at an early age. His first computer was a Quantex 486DX, powered by the Intel 486 processor. When Mark was 12 years old, his father introduced him to Atari BASIC Programming. At such a young age, Mark managed to use the program to come up with his own messenger called the ZuckNet. Thanks to his first creation, all the computers in his house were connected to the ones in his father’s dental office. Within that connected system, the computer users were allowed to send messages to each other. Mark Zuckerberg created his billion-dollar social networking site based on a simple concept. He was trying to compare photos of two different people and he invited other people to vote and decide which one was better looking. At Harvard University, with his three classmates, he had come up with the Facebook’s predecessor, Facemash. Mark Zuckerberg finally started to write the code for a new website later known as Facebook in 2004. This new site was equipped with new ideas and more useful features, including a section where users can share their comments. Facebook managed to become popular with many more users at many universities around the country. It only took less than a few months for Mark Zuckerberg to spread his networking site to countless numbers of schools and universities in the United States and Canada. Six years later TIME magazine made him Person of the Year for his social networking site. In 2018, Forbes included Mark in the list of the 400 richest people in the world. 4. What’s Zuckerberg’s first achievement as a programmer? A. A billion-dollar social networking site. B. Atari BASIC Programming. C. Facemash. D. Messenger ZuckNet. 5. What do we know about Facebook? A. Mark wrote the code for it with his classmates B. Mark first managed to spread it among IT business. C. It is directly based on ZuckNet. D. It has helped Mark rank among top billionaires around the world. 6. When did TIME magazine feature Mark Zuckerberg on its cover? A. In 2004 B. In 2015 C. In 2014 D. In 2010 7. Which of the following have contributed to Zucketherg’ success? ①support of his family ②Gift for computer programming ③Popularity at university ④Teamwork A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ①②④ D. ②③④ 【答案】4. D 5. D 6. Thanks to his first creation, all the computers in his house were connected to the ones in his father’s deatal office.( 在这么小的年纪,马克成功地利用这个程序想出了他自己的信使,叫做ZuckNet。多亏了他的第一个发明,他家里所有的电脑都和他父亲牙科诊所的电脑相连了。)”提到从小能开发 ZuckNet,后来创建 Facebook,体现天赋,所以②编程天赋是其成功因素;和第三段中“At Harvard University, with his three classmates, he had come up with the Facebook’s predecessor, Facemash.( 在哈佛大学,他和他的三个同学一起开发了Facebook的前身Facemash。)”提到团队协作,所以④团队合作是其成功因素。③大学受欢迎无原文依据,故 C(①②④)正确。故选C项。 C I was in the middle of coding a web page when my wife emailed me these questions: Ever wonder what it would be like to have the face, the brains, the personality and the body? What it would be like to have everyone stop when you walk in a room? What it would be like to be able to get anything or anyone you want? I stopped for a moment and thought about it because my wife wouldn't email me this unless something had driven her to do so. I emailed her back with what I thought was a pretty good answer. Here is what I wrote her back. Yes, I had thought many times about what it would be like to be one of the beautiful people. To be able to take your breath away when I walked into a room, or to be the life of the party and have everyone fawning(奉承) over me as I wore only the finest clothes and sported the perfect body? But then I always came back to the realization that a lifestyle like that is so fragile. As you get older, your body changes; as you get older, the money changes. Your body never looks the same; the clothes become more and more expensive to maintain. And once you have crossed the line, suddenly you are out. The next fresh face comes in and you are quickly forgotten. All through growing up I was never an attractive person. I was overweight and picked on. But that didn't stop me from being a nice person—a good, clean, funny and helpful person. I was the person who you came to when you needed a friend after a breakup. I was the one you came to when you needed a joke to brighten up your day. And in the long run, I will be the one you remember, not the new face, or the fresh style. In closing, I would like to say that we, as people, have developed into looking for things that are bigger and better instead of what will last. I don't know about you, but I will remember the friend who helped me when I was down, more than the hot girl I just saw walking down the street. I wish I could teach the world some more jokes. 8. How did the author react to his wife's questions? A. He took them seriously. B. He went on coding the page. C. He replied to them right away. D. He wondered why she had done so. 9. What can we learn about the author? A. He cares much about appearance. B. He has a clever and beautiful wife. C. He is always ready to help others. D. He doesn't like beautiful women. 10. The eyes, they say, are the windows to the soul. And if that is true, computers and robots powered by sophisticated(复杂的) artificial intelligence algorithms(算法) may soon have the ability to peer into your soul. That is the result of a new study on the connection between eye movements and personality, conducted by neuroscience researchers based at the University of South Australia and Published in the scientific Journal Frontiers in Neuroscience. “Eye movements during an everyday task predict aspects of our personality,” wrote the researchers, led by University of South Australia neuroscientist Tobias Loetscher, whose team follows 42 study subjects around the university campus recording their eye movements, then determines their personality traits(特点) with “well-established questionnaires” for determining personality type, according to a summary of the study published by the site Science Daily. The researchers fed the data into their AI algorithms and found that computers running the algorithms were able to record human eye movements and immediately determine a person’s major personality traits, such as “neuroticism, extraversion(外向), agreeableness, conscientiousness, as well as perceptual(感知的) curiosity”, the scientists wrote. “The new findings could improve the way human beings interact with their computers and other high-tech devices, even robots, allowing for more natural and realistic social interactions with machines,” Loetscher said. “People are always looking for improved, personalized services. Today’s robots and computers are not socially aware so they cannot adapt to non-verbal information,” Loetscher said in a statement quoted by Indian Express. “This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals.” The study revealed previously undiscovered relations between specific personality characteristics and specific eye movement tendencies, according to a summary in Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper. 12. What do the underlined words “peer into” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. understand B. stare at C search for D. concern about 13. How did the researchers conduct the research? A. It was carried out in a lab. B. 42 subjects’ eye movements were recorded. C. The students’ daily movements were tracked. D. Its subjects’ personalities were determined by computer. 14. According to Tobias Loetscher, what can we know? A. Robots and computers are socially conscious. B. People care less about improved, personalized services. C. Today’s robots and computers can accustom to non-verbal information. D. The discovery will improve the interaction between human beings and machines. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Human Personality Traits B. What Human Eye Movements Are C. Tell Personalities by Eye Movements D. How Humans and Machines Interact 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. Therefore, several medical organizations have tried to correct antibiotic misuse by explaining when the drugs are not needed. Ear Diseases Earaches account for over half of ear related diseases for children. Most earaches gradually heal with no antibiotic in days, especially in children two and older. ____17____ In severe cases or when children under two years old experience moderate to severe pain, antibiotics might be required. Eye Diseases Doctors often use antibiotic eye drops after treating related diseases. Macular Degeneration, for example, is an eye disease generally treated with injections or laser operation. But those drops are rarely needed after such procedures and can even damage patients’ eyes. Lung Diseases For older patients, particularly those who live in long-term care centers, doctors need to use antibiotics when a routine test finds bacteria in lung. ___18___ Throat Diseases ___19___ Therefore, antibiotics shouldn’t be widely used in treatments for such diseases. Only less than one third of strep throats are bacterial. If you suspect bacterial throat, get tested to find out for sure. Another report conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also indicates that antibiotic misuse affects at least two million people annually, killing more than 23,000. ____20____ Therefore, health experts urge all doctors in practice to follow the above instructions. A. Most throat diseases are caused by viruses. B. Just wait two days to see if symptoms disappear. C. But if the result proves normal, the drugs won’t help. D. In this case, antibiotics are the most effective for the old. E. Most doctors already know it, so they say no to antibiotics. F. Under such circumstances, limiting antibiotic misuse is a must. G. B Facebook has turned out to be one of the most visited and most popular social media sites in the world. His first computer was a Quantex 486DX powered by the Intel 486 processor. A A billion-dollar social networking site. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ①②④ D. ②③④ C I was in the middle of coding a web page when my wife emailed me these questions: Ever wonder what it would be like to have the face, the brains, the personality and the body? 10. According to the text, the author would agree that one should ________. A. try a new and fresh lifestyle B. tell jokes to live a meaningful life C. wear fancy clothes to attract people D. be the person who brings joy to others 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. What Is Wisdom? B. What Will Last? C. Three Questions D. Three Answers D A new study has shown how computers and robots powered by artificial intelligence can read human eye movements to “read” human personalities. A. understand B. stare at C. search for D. concern about 13. A.
