A man sat at a subway station in Washington D. C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded (鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most gifted musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the subway station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
24. Why did few people stop to listen to Joshua Bell playing?
A. They were busy. B. It was too cold in the subway.
C. They were not interested in music. D. The performance was not good enough.
25. What did the parents do when children stopped to look at the violinist?
A. They would give him some money. B. They would stop to enjoy the music.
C. They would applaud for the performance. D. They would ask them to continue walking.
26. Why did Joshua Bell play in the subway station?
A. To make more money.
B. To practise his skills in playing music.
C. To make an advertisement for his concert.
D. To find out people’s reaction under such a condition.
27. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To show us how to play music. B. To set us to think about our life.
C. To report a subway performance. D. To tell us the importance of music.

Are you attracted to faraway places? Do you prefer a vacation away from other tourists? Are you careful to take only memories and to leave only footprints? If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you just might be an ecotourist
Ecotourists are people who want to experience the natural world without damage and leave it that way when they return home. This started in the 1990s and ecotourism is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. The Ecuador’s remote Amazon Basin (盆地) is leading to that enlarging, and it gives a snapshot of what ecotourism looks like.
At the Ecolodge, a small group of small houses sits Kapawi Ecolodge in the middle of the Achuar people’s reserve (保护区) and is only reached by air. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest seen by few outsiders. As they do local Achuar guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to enjoy the local culture as well as the natural environment.
The owners of Kapawi pay monthly rent to the Achuar people, but they also train the community to run and manage the lodge. They have agreed on a plan to turn the operation over to the Achuar completely by 2011. The owners are working to make ecotourism benefit and empower the local people.
You probably won’t start your own ecolodge (生态旅馆) but you can be an ecotourist if you follow these guidelines: Protect the environment; Support local businesses; Respect the local customs and traditions.
The world is full of fascinating places to visit. As an ecotourist, you can enjoy them yourself and make sure that they remain beautiful for future generations as well.
28. According to the text, the ecotourists should be __________.
A. those who like to go to their travelling places by hiking
B. those who like an easily-remembered natural environment
C. those who prefer a natural world which is what it used to be
D. those who prefer unique natural environment of cultural relics
29. What does the underlined word “snapshot” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Idea. B. Chance. C. Purpose. D. Adventure.
30. At the Kapawi ecolodge, visitors can’t __________.
A. reach there by air B. live in the Achuar reserve
C. explore the Amazon rainforest D. see many travelers from outside
31. We can learn from the text that __________.
A. the Kapawi Ecolodge owners are the Achuar in favor of ecotourism
B. the owners of Kapawi encourage tourists to enjoy the Achuar culture
C. the Achuar people have gained a lot by collecting money from ecotourists
D. the Kapawi Ecolodge will continue to run and manage the hotel after 2011

Every school has students who stand out for their abilities and their eagerness to learn. In Mexico, a school created a program to work with them. In 2019, both teachers Lotta Andersson and John Rennie got the idea to provide learning opportunities for students with a hunger for knowledge. They are English coordinators(协调员) in the school. “We want to have a program to inspire students who really have the abilities and the interests to learn more and continue accepting challenges,” Andersson said during a recent interview.
Students in the program, which was called Learning Challenges, met with the teachers about once a month. Andersson and Rennie would help us choose research topics. We then worked with the teachers to find books, interview subjects and Internet sources. While in Learning Challenges, I gave presentations on European culture and the fashion industry.
When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which ended in June 2020 because of the limits of a common disease. Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-minded and see things from different angles(角度). Also, they mastered the skills — reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not to put limits on themselves.”
A student, Yihane Abed, conducted research on the sun, the moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a good presentation,” she said.
Andersson and Rennie continue to help students pursue their love of learning. “The program doesn’t exist formally, but as an important part of the culture at school, it is still needed,” Andersson said. “There is much more difference, not only for students who need extra help, but also for those who are higher achievers.”
32. What’s the purpose of creating Learning Challenges?
A. To help some students learn more.
B. To guide students to work out successfully.
C. To raise students’ interest in visiting Europe.
D. To encourage English students to help others.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Ways that students used in the program.
B. Abilities that students got from the program.
C. Difficulties that students met in the program.
D. Topics that students chose from the program.
34. Which kind of research did Yihane Abed conduct?
A. Teamwork. B. Travelling. C. The universe. D. The fashion industry.
35. What does Andersson think of the program?
A. Hard. B. Formal. C. Necessary. D. Traditional.

What you need to do now is keep working until doing one pull-up is the bottom of your range of abilities. By the time you can do two or three pull-ups some days, you’ll be able to do one pull-up any day.
A. Once you can do sets of five pull-ups
B Do not feel like you have to do all of them
C. And if you work hard, someday you’ll get there
D. You’ll wonder why you “can’t” do one anymore

“Mike, I could walk faster than those women run.” I made my usual comment (评论) after watching my son Mike run in a race. He laughed as he knew I wasn’t a runner. “Listen, Mom, how about running with me next year in this race?” Without thinking, I agreed to this challenge. I felt it’s a piece of cake!
Never did I imagine what the next year would bring. When it was almost time for this race to happen, Mike died in a car accident. A few of his friends knew this “challenge” I had agreed to with Mike. They started to encourage me to run the race. Honestly speaking, I had almost forgotten what I said.
Thinking deeply, I decided I should keep my promise to Mike. The first thing I did was buy some running clothes. I might look good, even though I hadn’t trained.
The day of the race came. I felt pretty sad, but I started off. It wasn’t long before a man started to run next to me. The man was very talkative. He kept saying how tired he was. The chatter went on and on. The race was over, and this man’s wife won! I was just happy to finish and keep my promise to Mike.
I came home, and my neighbor asked about the race. I told him what had happened. My neighbor laughed, “Kay, don’t you know what this guy was doing? He thought you were the competition by the way you were dressed. He wanted his wife to win.” “Oh really!?”
The following year I did train. I even bought some tapes called “Win At Sports” and listened to them daily. If this man thought I was the competition, you could bet I was going to be the competition. His attitude in that race built a fire in me! The race was on!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The race began and I was all dressed and ready.

A man sat at a subway station in Washington D. C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
C To report a subway performance. D. To tell us the importance of music.
A 25. D 26. D 27. B

When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded(鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.(在音乐家演奏的45分钟里,只有6个人停下来停留了一会儿。 ,以及第六段“Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.(在地铁演出的前两天,约书亚·贝尔在波士顿一家剧院的票就卖光了,那里的平均票价是100美元。)”可知,约书亚·贝尔实际上很受人们欢迎,但地铁中的演奏却没有多少人注意,以及第七段中“Joshua Bell’s playing in the subway station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.(约书亚·贝尔在地铁站的表演是由《华盛顿邮报》组织的,作为社会实验的一部分。)”

C
Are you attracted to faraway places? Do you prefer a vacation away from other tourists? Are you careful to take only memories and to leave only footprints? If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you just might be an ecotourist
Ecotourists are people who want to experience the natural world without damage and leave it that way when they return home. This started in the 1990s and ecotourism is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. The Ecuador’s remote Amazon Basin (盆地) is leading to that enlarging and it gives a snapshot of what ecotourism looks like.
You probably won’t start your own ecolodge (生态旅馆), but you can be an ecotourist if you follow these guidelines: Protect the environment; Support local businesses; Respect the local customs and traditions.
D. the Kapawi Ecolodge will continue to run and manage the hotel after 2011
C 29. A 30. D 31. B

根据第二段中“Ecotourists are people who want to experience the natural world without damage and leave it that way when they return home. (生态旅游者是指那些想要在不受破坏的情况下体验自然世界,并在回家时将其保持原样的人。)”可知,生态旅游者是那些喜欢自然世界原本样子的人。故选C项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。画线词的上文“Ecotourists are people who want to experience the natural world without damage and leave it that way when they return home. This started in the 1990s and ecotourism is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. 故选A项。
根据第三段中“At the Ecolodge, a small group of small houses sits Kapawi Ecolodge in the middle of the Achuar people’s reserve (保护区) and is only reached by air. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest seen by few outsiders. (在一生态旅馆,一小群小房子坐落在卡帕维生态旅馆,位于阿丘亚人保护区的中间,只能乘飞机到达。从这里,游客可以探索一些外人很少看到的亚马逊雨林。)”可知,卡帕维生态旅馆比较难以到达,游客从外面看不到很多旅行者。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“As they do local Achuar guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to enjoy the local culture as well as the natural environment. (在他们探索的时候,当地的阿丘亚人向导会解释,森林就像他们的超市,在那里他们可以找到食物、衣服、药品和工具。因此,游客学会享受当地的文化和自然环境。)”和第四段中的“They have agreed on a plan to turn the operation over to the Achuar completely by 2011. The owners are working to make ecotourism benefit and empower the local people. (他们已经就一项计划达成一致,到2011年将这项业务完全移交给阿丘亚人。所有者正在努力使生态旅游受益,并赋予当地人权力。)”可知,卡帕维生态旅馆的所有者在经营的时候让阿丘亚人向导为游客介绍他们的生活文化,并会将这项业务移交给当地人,让他们拥有充分的权力。由此推知,这里的所有者鼓励游客享受当地的阿丘亚文化。故选B项。
D
33 What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Ways that students used in the program.
B. Abilities that students got from the program.
C. Difficulties that students met in the program.
D. Topics that students chose from the program.
34. Which kind of research did Yihane Abed conduct?
A. Teamwork. B. Travelling. C. The universe. D. The fashion industry.
35. What does Andersson think of the program?
A. Hard. B. Formal. C. Necessary. D. Traditional.
A 33. B 34. C 35. C

____38____. For example, if you squatted(下蹲)225 pounds last week, that doesn’t mean you could also squat 225 today. We might say that your “range” is 200-225, and when you’re well-rested and on top of the world, you’re able to hit the top of that range. But even on a bad day, you know you can hit at least 200.
Pull-ups are like that, too.____39____, your strength was in the range of 50-55% of what it takes to do a pull-up. That means that when you get your first pull-up, your range might be something like 95-100%. The day you did the pull-up is a 100%day.The next day, maybe you’re only at 99%.____40____
What you need to do now is keep working until doing one pull-up is the bottom of your range of abilities. By the time you can do two or three pull-ups some days, you’ll be able to do one pull-up any day.
A. Once you can do sets of five pull-ups
B. Do not feel like you have to do all of them
C. And if you work hard, someday you’ll get there
D. You’ll wonder why you “can’t” do one anymore
E. Maybe when you started working towards a pull-up
F. But your first pull-up is not a graduation from all of that
G. We all have all kinds of abilities that we can do on any given day
C 37. F 38. G 39. E 40. D
根据前文““Be able to do a pull-up” is a common fitness goal. (“能做引体向上”是一个常见的健身目标。)”可知,此处强调做引体向上是大家常见的健身目标。C选项“And if you work hard, someday you’ll get there (如果你努力工作,总有一天你会成功的)”承接前文,指出如果你努力会实现前文所提出的目标,即能做引体向上。故选C。
根据下文“You should not leave the resistance bands and the pull-down machines in the dust. They need to stay with you during the next moment of your journey.( 你不应该将阻力带和下拉机束之高阁。在你接下来的运动旅程中,它们需要与你同在。)”可知,此处指出不应该将锻炼引体向上的设备收拾起来,因为在接下来的锻炼中你仍然需要坚持做引体向上,运用到这些设备。F选项“But your first pull-up is not a graduation from all of that(但你的第一次引体向上并不能代表你就此毕业)”引起下文,指出能做引体向上并不代表你就此毕业不再运用这些设备。故选F。
根据后文“For example, if you squatted(下蹲)225 pounds last week, that doesn’t mean you could also squat 225 today. We might say that your “range” is 200-225, and when you’re well-rested and on top of the world, you’re able to hit the top of that range. (例如,如果你上周下蹲了225磅,这并不意味着你今天也可以下蹲225磅。我们可能会说你的“范围”是200-225,当你休息得很好,处于世界之巅时,你就能达到这个范围的顶端。)”可知,此处以下蹲为例,指出每天的运动能力是不同的。G选项“We all have all kinds of abilities that we can do on any given day(我们每个人每天都拥有不同的运动能力。)”
根据前文“Pull-ups are like that, too.(引体向上跟下蹲运动的状况是一样的)”以及后文“your strength was in the range of 50-55% of what it takes to do a pull-up. (你的力量在做引体向上所需力量的50-55%之间)”可知,前后文指出引体向上跟下蹲的情况一样,即每天能够做出引体向上力量范围是不同的。E选项“Maybe when you started working towards a pull-up(也许当你开始练习引体向上时)”引起下文,指出刚开始做引体向上的时候,力量范围可能是50-55%之间,但是随后可能会减少。故选E。
【40题详解】
根据前文“The day you did the pull-up is a 100%day. The next day, maybe you’re only at 99%.(你做引体向上的那天是百分百的一天。第二天,也许你只剩下99%了。)”可知,做引体向上那天是百分之百,第二天能量范围会减少,由此推知,你想知道为什么自己不能像第一天那样了。D选项“You’ll wonder why you “can’t” do one anymore(你会想知道为什么你“不能”再做了)”符合语境。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The race began and I was all dressed and ready.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I stayed behind this man’s wife almost the whole race.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The race began and I was all dressed and ready. That day was very cold, but I didn’t care. I took off all my warm clothes and ran with only a shirt and shorts on. Nothing was going to weigh me down. The tapes I listened to talked about how to run the race. It gave ideas about staying behind and knowing when to make the move. I played the race over and over in my mind. Now the time had come to put it into practice.
I stayed behind this man’s wife almost the whole race. All of a sudden I saw HIM! There was her husband by the roadside and not in the race like the year before. I’ll never forget his words to his wife, “Watch out! She’s right behind you.” Well, mister, not anymore. Those were the words I needed to hear. I ran right past her and won the race! That running brought me comfort and relief. I fell on the grass and cried my eyes out.
