When feeling sad, many people eat snacks like ice cream, chips, or candy to feel better. However, a new study suggests that the foods we eat to feel better may have the opposite effect.
Researchers at Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston followed 31,000 women for 14 years to study the effects on mood of ultra-processed (超加工) foods such as sugary snacks, chips, or diet drinks. The women who ate lots of high ultra-processed foods had higher risks of depression (抑郁).
The exact cause is unclear, but the researchers think artificial sweeteners (舌甜味剂) in these foods might affect brain cell (细胞) communication, which could cause depression.
Instead of reaching for unhealthy snacks, try healthier choices like nuts or carrots. The act of chewing (咀嚼) might help calm you. Better yet, you could find an enjoyable activity to lift your spirits. You could listen to lively music or watch a funny video. But the best choice is just to get active. Walking, yoga, or strength training are helpful ways to fight depression.
It’s easier to reach for an ultra-processed snack when you’re feeling down, but that might leave you feeling worse. Choosing physical activity instead can make you feel much better!

Flying like a batB2 is a robot made to understand bat flight. The strength of flying made by the bats’ wings comes from a strong piece of skin.

A survey on weekly smartphone use
Recently, we did a survey on weekly smartphone use of 1400 eighth graders in Guangzhou Middle School. Here is the result.
According to the survey, 55% of the students use smartphones to search for information and study English. On the other hand, 45% of the students use smartphones to play games and watch short videos. Using smartphones has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, smartphones can be very helpful for learning. They provide easy access to a vast amount of information and educational resources. However, there are also some drawbacks. Excessive use of smartphones can waste a lot of time and money. Moreover, it can lead to addiction and distract students from their studies.
In my opinion, students should use smartphones wisely. They should set a time limit for non-educational activities and focus more on using smartphones as a tool for learning.
