E. Read the passage and complete the following tasks (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
Growing up in the desert, I knew that water was hard to come by. Sadly, we humans are only making the global water shortage worse. During my college years, I felt bad about myself because I was using as much water as everyone else.
A guest lecture in college turned things around for me. For the first time, I learned about rainwater and greywater harvesting. I decided to give it a go.
I’ve lived in the desert community of Tucson, Arizona, for 30 years. During the monsoon (季风) season, more water than we need falls from the sky. But we just let it run off. At the same time, we import water from the Colorado River, 300 miles away, and pump (抽吸) it uphill 3,000 feet, using a lot of energy and money. It makes me think: Why are we wasting all this energy when there’s already plenty of rainwater here?
I started small. I dug out basin-shaped garden beds with a raised path beside them. As the rain hits the path, it flows into the garden and waters the plants. I then set up a tank (缸) to collect rainwater from the house roof for use in the garden during dry times.
I also thought about how I could reuse greywater. I started with my washing machine. At the back, there is a pipe that sends the used water to the sewer (污水管). I added another pipe. Every time I wash my clothes, the water flows out to my garden and waters the trees.
With these set-ups, 95 percent of the water I use to water my garden comes from free on-site sources. Our family of four now uses less than 20 gallons of city water per person per day. For comparison, the average American uses five times more! I’m saving a lot of money on my water bills. My plants are also living a better life. They look much greener and healthier because rainwater and greywater don’t contain chlorine (氯).
I’m always trying to improve my set-ups. At the same time I’m sharing my experience with my neighbors. I want more people to see how satisfying it is to be part of the solution, not the problem.

My view on digital life
Digital tools like smartphones, online learning platforms, and social media are a big part of our lives. They bring many good things. For example, online platforms help me learn anytime, anywhere. Smartphones make it easy to talk to friends and find information quickly. Social media helps me know what’s happening.
But there are also problems. Using phones too much hurts my eyes and makes it hard to sleep. Sometimes, I spend too much time on games or videos and forget to do homework. Social media can also make me feel worried if I see everyone else seems perfect.
I think we should use these tools wisely. We should set time limits for fun. We must finish homework first before playing. And remember, life offline is just as important!
