At our library we’re always looking for engaging ways to connect young readers with our collections — especially during the summer. This year, our Youth Services team brought a classic game to life with a scavenger hunt (寻宝游戏) program. This Scavenger Hunt: Level Up Your Reading event connects directly to our Summer Reading Program’s theme: Level Up!
Our goal is to create an experience that is both fun and accessible. We design it to include opportunities for exploration and discovery. We created a self-paced, interactive program activity that encourages kids to navigate our library space and learn more about what we offer. It is available throughout the entire month of June, giving families enough time to join the fun on their own schedule.
We offer two distinct levels to better serve a wide age range:
Level 1 (Preschool-Grade 2) :
Younger children search for amusing game characters in the Youth Services Department. This level uses colorful markers to stimulate curiosity without requiring reading skills. Characters are hidden near collections like Playaways and Binge Boxes, helping kids and caregivers discover new areas.
Level 2 (Grades 3-6) :
Older children participate in a more advanced version of the scavenger hunt. They not only. locate each character but also answer a challenge question at every stop. These questions help introduce them to different library collections like world languages, nonfiction, and graphic novels. This promotes deeper engagement and informal learning.
The scavenger hunt helps families explore more of what the library has to offer. Kids and caregivers turn it into a shared experience filled with curiosity and conversation.
1. What is the main purpose of the scavenger hunt?
A. To promote summer reading. B. To raise funds for the library.
C. To emphasize service sense. D. To organize competitive games.
2. Which of the following best describes the library’s approach to the scavenger hunt?
A. Competitive and challenging. B. Teacher-led and structured.
C. Self-guided and family-friendly. D. Technology-driven and entertaining.
3. What distinguishes Level 2 from Level 1?
A. The task of finding characters. B. The focus on formal learning.
C. The involvement of caregivers. D. The demand for reading abilities.
B
I was recently on a crowded flight home from California, and holiday travel was busy and chaotic. I counted three different occasions of children having emotional breakdowns — one at the security check point and two on the plane. I couldn’t help but notice people in line commenting, “Can’t that mom get a handle on her child?” “That kid needs some discipline!”... These people seemed to suggest that these awful holiday travel circumstances should somehow be tackled with grace and ease.
To her credit, the mother of the toddler (学步儿童) in the security line kept her cool despite the sweat on her brow and her reddened face. As a mom who was constantly peppered with comments from well-intentioned friends who thought they were in possession of the recipe for perfect parenthood, I was all too familiar with her situation.
I might have been one of those judgmental folks before having my own children. Today I’m much more understanding. Raising children is hard, and every child and family situation is extremely unique. The reality of our hustle-culture and the lack of resources prohibits many people from being the kind of parents they would really like to be. Judgment certainly isn’t helpful, only causing a feeling of shame.
As is echoed in the article Reimaging Shame, Author Jan Bonhoeffer states, “Left unexamined, shame can cloud our self-view, leaving us convinced that our worth is conditional. It whispers lies: ‘You’ll never be good enough.’ And when shame continues, it can lead to self abandonment.” The role of motherhood is both complex and challenging, so any attack on a mother will get her loaded with shame, and shame is disempowering. The last thing women need is more disempowerment.
Whoever coined the phrase, “Everyone you meet is facing an invisible battle. Be kind,” was accurate. The least we can do is suspend our tendency to judge one another, replace it with a mindset of compassion, and resolve to do a better job empowering the other women in our lives through intentional action or advocacy.
4. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. It’s easy to be an armchair critic. B. Bystanders see most of the game.
C. There is no life without discipline. D. Criticism is a cornerstone to growth.
5. How does the author find her friends’ comments?
A. Constructive. B. Informative. C. Misleading. D. Unworkable.
6. What does Jan Bonhoeffer stress in the article?
A. The true worth of self-views. B. The core concept of shame.
C The potential impact of shame. D. The complex role of motherhood.
7. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Being non-judgmental toward mothers. B. Maintaining a positive mindset at work.
C. Empowering moms with multiple skills. D. Acting swiftly to resolve hidden conflicts.
C
Switching food and drink purchases to very similar but more environmentally friendly alternatives could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from household groceries by more than a quarter (26%), according to a new Australian study from The George Institute published in Nature Food. Making bigger changes— like swapping a frozen meat lasagne (宽面条) for the vegetarian option— could push the reduction to as much as 71%.
Lead author Dr Allison Gaines said, “Dietary habits need to change significantly if we are to meet global emissions targets, particularly in high- income countries like Australia, the UK, and the US.” But while consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the food system, they lack reliable information to identify the more environmentally friendly options.
Researchers calculated the projected emissions of annual grocery purchases from 7,000 Australian households in The George Institute’s FoodSwitch database and global environmental impact datasets. More than 22,000 products were assigned to major, minor and sub- categories of foods(e. g. ‘bread and bakery’, ‘bread’ and ‘white bread’, respectively) to quantify emissions saved by switching both within and between groups. Making switches within the same sub- categories of foods could lead to emission reductions of 26% in Australia, equivalent to taking over 1.9 million cars off the road. Switches within minor categories of foods could lead to even bigger emission reductions of 71%.
The results of the study show the potential to significantly reduce our environmental impact by switching like- for- like products. “It showed that you can switch to lower emissions products while still enjoying nutritious foods,” Dr Gaines added.
A free app, called ecoSwitch, has been developed currently available in Australia, based on this research. Shoppers can use their device to scan a product barcode and check its ‘Planetary Health Rating’, a measure of its emissions shown as a score between half a star(high emissions) to five stars (low emissions).
“While ecoSwitch is a much- needed first step in providing environmental transparency (透明度) for grocery shoppers, the vision is for compulsive display of a single, standardised sustainability rating system on all supermarket products,” concluded prof Neal, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Imperial College London.
8. What does the author want to show by listing numbers in paragraph 1?
A. The impact of food industry. B. The need of changing daily diet.
C. The status of environmental problems. D. The influencing factors of gas emissions.
9. Why do researchers make a detailed classification for products?
A. To set up a comprehensive database.
B. To figure out the detailed food categories.
C. To identify emissions reduced by switching food.
D. To ensure less air pollution caused by food options.
10. What do we know about ecoSwitch?
A. It is popular in high- income countries. B. It checks the emissions of star products.
C. It is a measurement system for a supermarket. D. It ensures wiser choices for food purchase.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. EcoSwitch makes customers aware of food risk.
B. Food swaps contribute to environmental sustainability.
C. Environmental problems account for less food nutrition.
D. Greenhouse gas emissions have an effect on food safety.

Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more? Surprisingly, the answer is Person B. This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.
12. Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience?
A. To illustrate a dilemma in making choices. B. To suggest a way of striking up friendships.
C. To stress the importance of strategic requests. D. To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect.
13. What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors?
A. Reducing the tension caused by social contact.
B. Increasing the chance of getting help in return.
C. Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts.
D. Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust.
14. What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Selfless. B. Impolite. C. Aggressive. D. Responsible.
15. What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect?
A. It makes little sense. B. It applies to most cultures.
C. It has situational limitations. D. It has great practical significance.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is changing the way we work. With more and more simpler tasks being automated humans are left with more high-level cognitive work, such as idea generation, strategic planning, and creative writing. ____16____
The problem is that we still follow a mindset that resembles the era of assembly (组装) lines, which doesn’t foster or facilitate the type of work needed today. Leaders constantly measured productivity in terms of how many hours an employee spent at work or the number of abstract targets they reached. ____17____ This type of output doesn’t fit in the era of AI. Instead, we have to make a psychological switch, structuring each workday for quality instead of quantity.
Start by kicking the old method of continuous work throughout the day. Research shows that continuous work impairs creative idea generation and high quality, complex cognitive work. ____18____ It’s recommended that using work sessions that are about 90 minutes long, attacking the hardest part of the task in the first 20 minutes and moving to the slower, easier work during the remaining time.
____19____ Therefore, managers should consider the principal area that a team or individual is working on rather than imposing the same work schedule across a team or an organization. Data suggests that it’s better to work on tasks that involve creativity, imagination, and problem solving during the first few hours of the day and again right before you go to sleep. ____20____ In between the focused work sessions, make time for a nap or for easy work that doesn’t require much creativity or focus.
A. That’s because people tend to overwork.
B. The time of day will also make a difference.
C. As a result, quantity of work was prioritized.
D. To excel in the new era, we’ll need to transform how we work.
E. With every new technology comes fear and then new opportunity.
F. Because of that, it’s better to work in bursts, giving the mind a rest.
G. The middle of the day is better for something calling for concentration.

It was the first week of Lily’s middle school. The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Lily, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn’t think others would like her.
Lily finally sat in Mr. Johnson’s Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Lily forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We’ll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Lily desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的) face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Lily began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Lily originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher’s voice. “He’s actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students’ papers not read, including Lily’s paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Dear Tom,
How are you recently? I’m writing to share with you one of the most heartwarming moments from the exciting Autumn Sports Meeting held by my school last week.
During the 1500-meter race, one runner slipped and fell heavily. Instead of seizing the chance to speed ahead, several nearby runners immediately turned back and helped the fallen schoolmate up and supported him towards the finish line. The crowd, which had been silent for a moment, erupted into thunderous applause.
This moment really touched me deeply. It’s qualities such as kindness and unity that make our school community so warm and strong. I believe such beautiful moments can also be found everywhere in your school life. Hope you’re having a great time!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. Lily was nervous with her head down. After other students finished reading the papers one by one, finally, it was Lily’s turn. Frozen with fear, Lily stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking. Seeing it, Mr. Johnson told a funny joke, which made all laugh. Feeling more relaxed, Lily began reading. She was so focused that she felt she was alone. She didn’t notice that her story soon attracted all her classmates who sat up straight, without any chatting. They were lost in her fantastic story.
After Lily finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. Lily was shocked. When she raised her head, she found everyone staring at her excitedly. Lily finally smiled. She found everyone in the class responded to her story positively. After that class, Lily slowly lifted her head while walking. Later, she kept writing. And she began speaking in front of people and enjoyed it. A braver and more confident girl appeared. And she was grateful to Mr. Johnson who believed in every student.
